A perfect blend of theory and practice, Making the Team unites cutting-edge research on groups with practical management principles. The clear, step-by-step approaches offered in this book will prove especially useful for managers-in-training as well as seasoned executives. The book is organized into 3 primary tasks for the leader/manager: 1) Accurately assessing and improving team performance; 2) Managing the internal dynamics of teams (diversity, conflict, and creativity); and 3) Optimally leveraging the team within the larger organization. For Human Resource employees and trainers, consultants, and all levels of educators.
Customer Reviews:
Not up to standard.......2007-04-17
This book was a required text, otherwise I never would have read it. The book is full of inconstancies, bad literary technique, and it takes to many pages to cover not enough material. The authors personal prejudices are obvious. There are better books on teamwork available.
Excellent textbook........2006-03-09
I was required to purchase this book for a project management course and it's one of the better texts I've read on the topic. Well organized and easily referenced, one of the main strengths of the book is it's analysis of real world examples. Very good text overall.
Worth the Price for "External Evironments".......2001-04-19
Leigh Thompson has done it again. Like few others this Northwestern University scholar takes current research and puts it on the page like few other experts. I particularly found the sections on dealing with conflict within teams, creativity, and social capital (in the External Evironment section) worth reading. I keep this book with me when I am meeting with a team. I use the individual chapters as a guide for activities there. If you have an interest in teams, Leigh Thompson is the one expert you should include in your library.
Making the Team Makes the Grade!.......2000-01-16
Whether you work in teams, design them, or study them, you will find much of value in this book. Drawing on a wealth of social and behavioral science findings, Leigh Thompson shows the advantages, and the pitfalls, of getting things done through teamwork. Clearly written, with many case examples, Thompson builds on her research and consulting experiences to create a complex picture of what makes groups tick. I particularly liked her explanation of how to foster creativity in teams, as well as how to deal with the inevitable conflicts that arise. She notes that teams are not a panacea. However, under the right conditions, properly organized teams contribute substantially to their organizations. If you're dissatisfied with the way things are going in your organization, this book would make a great (anonymous?) gift for your boss!
Book Description
Team building is not itself an activity, but the result of attending to the seventeen characteristics that demarcate effective teamwork. When these characteristics exist to a high degree, you have an effective team. When they do not, you have a weak team. It is the manager's job to assess the strength of these characteristics in the organization and then to remediate any weakness. That is effective team building. This widely read practical guide is free of technical jargon, with many examples of successful implementation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2006-08-18
This book was a required reading for me but I would recommend it to any manager, employee and to all organizations who value the team approach. It is an easy read and it puts common knowledge into an easy to follow format. It is very informative and it makes you look at what your place of work does and does not do to help promote a successful environment.
Teambuilding Made Easy!.......2000-09-24
This is a must read for anyone in leadership. When working with two or more people, it is important to establish clear expectations of how groups are to work together. Harvey and Drolet's book is laid out in a simplistic format, easy to read, with simple procedural steps to follow to build teams of people to work productively for a common vision. Emphasis is placed laying strong foundation for the group and then identifying the importance of conflict and managing it.
A nice follow up to this book is The Practical Decision Maker by Harvey, Bearley and Corkrum. This book takes the next step and gives specific tools and strategies on how to harness and direct the conflict to elevate the team to higher levels of thinking and reaching stronger decisions.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Moderately Pleased.......2003-04-22
R. Meredith Belbin's text, Management Teams: Why the succeed or fail is quite applicable to my studies in small group communication. However, I would not choose to read it again outside of this context. I did not enjoy the writing style or the setup of the book, yet it contained helpful information for the assignment I needed it for. The review on the back cover perfectly describes the intended audience of the text, with a line drawn from PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT that says "It should be read by all who have responsibility and authority for guiding organizations in their selection of management teams." For the purpose of writing a speech with the intended audience being a startup corporation looking to build new management teams, this text was very useful and informative. Beyond this, I did not learn much that I had not already learned, or could have surmised on my own. Without having the time to read the text from cover to cover in order from beginning to end, it was difficult to follow some of the associations drawn to other material. There were a few concepts that I did not fully understand even after reading the information, and chose to leave these things out of my speech, such as the Apollo Syndrome. Given that this text is probably not meant for use in coursework, or at least not so much in the area of communication, it was quite applicable to the study of team communication. The focus of the text is more geared toward management research, which seems to be common-sensical at times, yet I think needs to be put into print to establish general guidelines for all to follow. Overall, I would probably recommend this text to someone completing the same or similar assignment or to someone looking to get ahead in a management team. This is definitely a very directed reading and intended for a very tailored audience.
An Essential Book for Building Collaborative Teams.......2000-04-01
This extraordinary book was written by Dr. Belbin nearly 20 years ago and remains in a class by itself in providing a useful theory for building and operating effective decision-making teams. Nowhere else will the reader find a set of principles that are so soundly based on direct evaluation of competing teams, explain so much of effective and ineffective team behavior which otherwise confounds explanation, and which is so beautifully and succinctly written.
While Belbin's title suggests this book is simply about business management, the content of the book is of much wider applicability. This book is a valuable, perhaps indispensable, source for anyone involved in collaborative endeavors. The book would be useful if it merely answered the question "Why do collaborative (creative, decision-making) teams succeed or fail?" Belbin goes much further than that. He tells us how to proactively build teams that are predisposed to succeed and, equally importantly, how to adopt strategies that will lead to success on the part of teams not so fortunately constructed.
I have found this book very useful in building, and teaching the building, of software product development teams, and heartily recommend it for that purpose.
Using Belbins team roles.......2000-02-04
This book is a must for all trainers in the HR arena. It explains the background to Belbins research, it explains the roles in detail and goes on to explain what the roles mean and how to use them to optimise team performance.
The language Belbin uses is friendly and easy to read and so the book is ideal material for trainers and students alike.
A classic book which should be included on every HR Trainers bookshelf.
Matching personality with tasks, and vice versa: the prequel.......1998-10-14
This is really the story behind Belbin's Team Roles. The book show how he, through painstaking research for over twenty years, discovered nine different styles of work (which he calls "Team Roles") that are typical of individuals in teams.
His team role theory is fascinating, and has been shown to correspond with Cattell's 16PF and with the Big 5 personality taxonomy (see e.g. John's chapter in Pervin's Hanbook of Personality).
His ideas on the problems with "perfect fits" in organizations and how to discover "surprise fits" are very ingenous.
Belbin perhaps spends too many words on his discoveries, but they are good words.

Book Description
The conference on Active X-Ray Sky was held approximately two years after the launch of the Rossi-Xte and RXTE satellites. The objective of these proceedings was to incorporate results not only from these two missions, but to review recent developments about the Active X-ray Sky as obtained from the four currectly active X-ray missions, as well as from the Copton Gamma-ray Observatory.
Some of the very dramatic findings were: the discovery of X-ray and optical afterglow in Gamma Ray Bursts; the discovery of X-ray oscillations at kilohertz frequencies from binary systems and the discovery of correlated IR flares, radio flares and X-ray dip-flare cycles in microquasars. These results have yielded dramatic new insights into our physical universe. Other important results reported or reviewed here include the detection of extreme high-energy emission in the active binary stars Algol and UX Ari, resonant absorption scattering from the Perseus Cluster, and cyclotron lines from pulsars. These and many other recent and important results are published here, resulting in a state-of-art review by experts currently active in the field.
