As proposed by Kiyoshi Suzaki, a "mini-company" is a new kind of internal structure within a larger business, managed like an individual but interconnected corporation and designed for both personal and organizational advancement. Suzaki, a worldwide manufacturing consultant and author of several previous books, fully defines the concept in Results from the Heart and shows how it can have positive impacts on employees and ultimately contribute to their success and their company's. The purpose, as he sees it, is to "go beyond just doing our work routinely. We need a fresh and lively new paradigm to continuously find purpose in what we do." This is achieved with his model, Suzaki argues, because it allows workers on all levels to make meaningful contributions in the areas over which they have responsibility. He explains how those in any department can create and operate one of these entities, from developing its mission and orchestrating its implementation to summarizing its progress and acknowledging its contributions. The idea may not appeal to everyone, but Suzaki contends it has already proven effective and he provides enough detail here for anyone interested in giving it a try. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Results from the Heart introduces a new and helpful approach to improving job performance, improving job satisfaction, and helping organizations better respond to the rapid changes that are an inherent part of today's business environment. Mr. Suzaki recognizes that a motivated and engaged workforce should be part of any strategy to obtain and maintain competitive advantage.
--Carl Stern, CEO,
The Boston Consulting Group
Since the publication of Frederick Taylor's The Principles of Scientific Management, managers have relied on logic to compel action. Now Kiyoshi Suzaki, one of the world's leading experts on enlarging the talents, self-esteem, and growth of the individual employee, argues that logic alone cannot move people to act. Productivity problems are inextricably linked to self-esteem, he argues, and worst of all to a prodigious waste of individual talent. But each solution is personal, Suzaki concludes, and found only within ourselves.
"To find meaning and purpose at work we must use our brain," Suzaki says, "but listen to our heart." In Zenlike fashion he proposes that each of us ask ourselves a series of questions to determine the degree to which our brain is engaged with our heart. The framework around which this selfquestioning takes place is a groundbreaking concept that Suzaki calls "the mini-company." The author demonstrates how, within the larger workplace, each job is endowed with an almost spiritual meaning when each person -- at every level -- becomes president of his or her own area of responsibility. With simple diagrams, Suzaki shows how your boss becomes your banker or venture capitalist and your peers become your immediate suppliers or customers. The results are nothing short of astonishing. In Results from the Heart, Suzaki describes thousands of mini-companies he has "founded" during his worldwide consulting assignments. In most cases in which unhappy employees had previously "followed instructions like robots," there have been spectacular increases in both morale and productivity. If it is true that work is a journey, this manifesto for a more humane definition of the way we work is the roadmap.

Total Productive Maintenance Small Groups Taken to the Next Level.......2007-05-21
I was exposed to Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) throughout the late nineties, therefore the concept of small groups (inherent to the way TPM works) was familiar to me. In "Results from the Heart", Kiyoshi Suzaki, an author of many titles on the famous Japanese manufacturing framework, introduces the concept of Mini-Companies as an extension of the concept of Small Groups.
The tools and components he presents for the internal functioning of Mini-Companies and their interaction with other Mini-Companies across the organization give new life to the concept. This is the true value of the book.
As for the connection of the TPM concepts to finding meaning and purpose at work, the book seems a bit of a stretch, barely touching on the topic. If you really want to read about this, I recommend you try Z.B.A.: Zen of Business Administration - How Zen Practice Can Transform Your Work And Your Life.
Dalai Lama's foreword .......2004-10-24
Taken from the Dalai Lama's foreword:
"I believe we have both the ability and the means to solve our problems and improve our world. Perhaps, the most important factors that inhibit us are short-sightedness, narrow-mindedness, and selfishness. Yet, to look after yourself is not wrong. Without a strong sense of self, we cannot develop self-confidence, determination, and will power.
But we must be careful, for there is also a narrow minded selfishness that can lead to self-destruction. To counter that we have to realize that in reality our own interest is closely linked to the interests of others and the benefit, happiness, and interests of others are our own."
The idea of mini-company is as simple as that! But there may be a deep gap between spirituality and business... I wonder.

Major asset to my business........2007-02-21
I have a medical transcription service out of my home, and I could not do my job without this book. Everyone abbreviates these days. A necessity.
Great reference book .......2006-11-30
I have been a medical transcriptionist for more than 40 years - have taught this class in college - and was a hospital supervisor for many years.
I just ordered this newest edition and am sure that I will refer to it often as I have the older editions in the past. It is a wonderful reference book and a very important one in today's world ---with more and more abbreviations constantly being used.
*** Thought I would mention -- that mmHg is a very acceptable term - in fact, it is the preferred way to type (millimeters Mercury). I can say that the Medical Record's Departments of all four of the hospitals I have worked at (or have been the transcription supervisor at) would correct us --if we didn't write it this way. This can readily be realized by reading a few medical journals......
Again - this is a wonderful book - but remember to keep getting updated versions - as more and more abbreviations and acronyms are constantly being used.

Stedman's word books necessary for transcription.......2004-05-15
In reading the other review here, I get the feeling the reviewer isn't using this book correctly. The stated purpose and intent of each of the Stedman's word books is, quoting the publisher's preface, "to the wordsmiths of the healthcare professions---medical transcriptionists, medical editors and copy editors," etc. In doing medical transcription, I have *never* had to abbreviate "mercury," as transcription must be clear as possible. Mercury should always be spelled out. Even a common medical term like KCl (which *is* found in this book under K) must be spelled out as "potassium chloride." That is the unsurpassed value of the Stedman's word books.
This is one of their books that I use quite frequently. When listening to dictation, acronyms are often used and are sometimes required to be spelled out even when dictated as an acronym. This book is loaded with hundreds of pages of acronyms and their meanings. Also, if a doctor's "F" sounds like "S" or "B" sounds like "V," this book is extremely helpful in eliminating possible acronyms to find the correct one, because it lists not just the letters ("SUV" for standard uptake value, for example, and no entry for "FUV") but the meaning also.
This book may not be much use for students in medical school, I don't know; but it beautifully meets its stated intent, and that is for MTs, etc., as stated above. Just as a telephone directory may be no use in giving demographics of any given neighborhood, that is not its purpose; giving chemical symbols for the various elements is not the purpose of a book of acronyms to be used in transcription and medical copywriting/editing/proofreading etc.
Abbreviations you MUST know beforehand!.......2003-07-18
If you already know the abbreviation you need, this book is ok. If you need to know an abbreviation you are NOT going to like this book. For instance, need to know how to abbreviation mercury? If you don't know it starts with H...good luck. No index in the back listing mercury...page etc etc. Would have been nice.

EXCELLENT RESOURCE!!.......2003-04-10
I'm currently training to become a Pharmacy Technician, and this book has a wealth of information I constantly tap into. A great resource for anybody in the health field!
SAVES MY LIFE EVERY DAY!!.......2003-04-01
I rely heavily on this abbreviations dictionary and have referred to on a daily basis for many years. I have recommended it to all of my colleagues (medical transcriptionists) and they agree that it is focused on the information we need, making work a lot easier. Even though it came out in 1997, it serves us very well in our daily work, although I must say, we are all looking forward to the new edition!
My choice for the BEST medical abbreviations dictionary!.......2002-12-15
I am a nurse in a major urban hospital who is constantly having to decipher all kinds of abbreviations. I have used many many different abbreviations dictionaries and I particularly like this one for several reasons:
1) It gives the only clinical abbreviations that are most commonly encountered in my work, so I don't have to wade through endless choices that wouldn't be applicable anyway
2) Much more accurate than other abbrev. dictionaries (you cannot imagine the mistakes I have come across in very popular dictionaries such as Stedman's and Mosby's!!). I have seen a few minor errors in this dictionary, but far fewer than other dictionaries
3)The type is large enough to read
4) Price is great
So, all in all, I highly recommend this dictionary to any health care professional, and believe me, I know of what I speak!
Hands down, the absolute BEST abbreviations dictionary.......2001-11-09
Even though this dictionary is not as "big" as Mosby's and Stedman's, it is much better. It is much more up-to-date (the others have so much antiquated material it is ridiculous), it has more clinical abbreviations,is very easy to use and cheaper too. What more could you ask. I highly recommend it!
Excellent reference for medical transcriber or coder.......1998-04-11
This paperback handbook is a compact reference for medical acronyms and abbreviations. It is small but rugged for constant desk use. There are hundreds of common and hard-to-find abbreviations that appear in doctor's shorthand and patient chart notations. Medical transcriptionists and medical coders will find this handbook very valuable in deciphering surgery and anesthesia records. I recommend this book for every medical office or homeworker.

The Best for the Least.......2001-05-18
I think that it's terrific to have finally found a current coding manual with all of the three necessary coding systems combined in one manual for nearly the price of one coding manual. Anyone interested in properly coding you need to take a look at this one.

Book Description
The Earth in Context: A Guide to the Solar System tells a tale of scientific discovery, with two interwoven strands - one tracing the development of understanding the Earth's geological history, and the other placing this in the context of processes at work on the other planets of the solar system. Although planetology is assigned half of the text, the primary focus of the book is the Earth. It is discussed in two parts, the first summing up our knowledge of the Earth as it is today and the other considering it as it was long ago.
Customer Reviews:
Our Home In The Solar System.......2004-09-02
The advent of the space age in 1957 has led to a quantum leap in mankind's knowledge of the Earth and its neighbors in the Solar System. After writing the most comprehensive book about the geologic work of the Apollo astronauts on the Moon ("Exploring the Moon", David Harland has turned to the exploration of the Solar System, and more specifically, the place of the Earth within it. The acceptance by the scientific community in the 1960's of the idea of "plate tectonics" as the mechanism to explain the large-scale geological evolution of the Earth has led to interest in determining the evolutionary process of the other bodies in the Solar System to fill out the picture and to tie all of this to the development of the conditions necessary for the sustenance of life on Earth. All of this is covered in this book.
One of the most important features of this book is an historical survey of the growth of the body of knowledge of the other bodies in the Solar System, starting with the invention of the telescope in the 17th century, and how this has evolved with improvements in observational technology down to our own time.
The author then leads us to the important question regarding the possible uniqueness of life on Earth, and why, if it is unique, this should be the case, especially considering that Earth's neighbors, Mars and Venus are similar to Earth in many ways and yet have evolved in radically different directions which are inimical to the sustenance of life as we know it (of course, the discovery of living organisms in hydrothermal vents where there is no oxygen at the bottom of the ocean is forcing scientists to broaden their views of what life-friendly environments are really like). For example, only the Earth, among the four terrestrial planets has a large, natural satellite. Why is this? If the Moon didn't exist there would be no life on Earth because the presence of the Moon keeps the Earth's orbit stable and prevents the obliquity of the spin axis from changing. All this leads to a stable thermal environment, vital for life to exist. Similarly, it is now believed that the water present on Earth was brought to the planet from comets originating in the outer Solar System. Another important question is why the Earth has plate tectonics whereas Mars certainly doesn't and Venus probably doesn't. Thus, we see that in order to understand our own planet, it is vital to understand the process that work on all the others and to know what is happening even at the outermost reaches of the Solar System. This book surveys all these matters, giving the layman a comprehensive picture of the current state of knowledge.
The book has an extensive glossary, but I would primarily recommend it to someone who has at least some college-level background in physics, engineering or other physical science in order to fully appreciate it.
