    Book Description

    Financial markets are among the most highly-regulated markets in the world. Nevertheless, financial crises still occur -- witness the U.S. savings-and-loan fiasco of the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the Mexican and East Asian financial implosions of 1994 and 1997. What role does regulation play in stabilizing -- or destabilizing -- financial markets? "Restructuring Regulation and Financial Institutions" answers this question with incisive analyses of financial market regulation in the United States.

    The ramifications of financial regulation in the United States extend far beyond the nation's borders. World financial markets are undergoing dramatic change, driven by the rapid development and deployment of new technology that enables information -- and money -- to travel farther, faster. However, a Byzantine array of regulatory structures in the international arena hinder the development of efficient global financial markets. Policy makers around the world are attempting to address the issues by emulating the financial markets of the United States.

    This book presents 10 papers that examine in-depth the primary aspects of U.S. financial market regulation, including:

    * Banks
    * Securities markets
    * Pension policies and mutual funds
    * Derivatives
    * Life insurance company investments
    * Government sponsored enterprises
    * Systemic risk

    Each paper considers how regulation enhances or impedes the efficiency of a particular financial sector, and is followed by comments by two or three noted experts. The result of this approach is a wealth of useful information that may be applied by policy makers contemplating the restructuring of regulations and financial institutions.

    The contributors to this volume are distinguished economists, many of whom have careers not just in business, government, or academia, but have held influential positions in all three. Such varied backgrounds enable the contributors to offer remarkable insights based on the best of theory and practice.

    Never before has understanding the workings of U.S. financial market regulation been so important to the development of world financial markets. Policy makers around the globe will find that "Restructuring Regulation and Financial Institutions" offers a cogent assessment of the contemporary regulatory environment in U.S. financial markets, and a blueprint for action in evolving global financial markets.

        Book Description

        It's not just faulty products and poor fiscal results that can throw an executive into crisis. The more prevalent and pernicious problems are personal in nature. A manipulative or hierarchical boss may be suffering a crisis of confidence; a stressed-out or uninterested colleague may struggle with a crisis of passion.

        According to experienced psychologist and executive coach Alan Downs, these often dormant interior conflicts flare up when the crushing demands of the business world collide with the inner needs of the individual. His new book offers a fresh, eye-opening perspective on how to steer executives back to a successful career path.

        Secrets of an Executive Coach uncovers six crises that cause people to fail. And unlike the prevailing corporate model, which advocates suppressing crises, Downs explains how to confront and resolve them using 11 essential coaching techniques, including role playing, self-imitation, metaphor map, and devil's advocate. These classic methods gain new relevance in this breakthrough approach that puts crisis management at the heart of effective

        What a well written, user friendly book!

        Easy and fun to read. Seems to be right on target, and gives a lot of excellent examples to illustrate "secrets".

        This will be a "handbook" for me as I start a new company, Encouragement Resources, LLC.

        This is a classic in the history of medicine. It is laboriously written and rather detailed, but it captures much of the person of Welch and of the culture that existed in American medicine at the turn of the century. To someone with minimal medical background, this tome is probably dull. To me, after years of medical schooling and practice, this book is an inspiring revelation of the transition of medical education and medical care from centuries of alchemy to the scientific discoveries that now form the basis of medicine. The person of Welch looms very large indeed over the present system of medical eduation and research, but I never would have appreciated the depth of his contributions without reading this book. A must for anyone interested in the history of American medicine.

        Simon Flexner portrays William Henry Welch as probably the biggest contributor in helping establish the backbone for medicine / pathology as we know it today. Simon Flexner was a very good friend of Welch's, and this source is one of the best secondary sources available to explore what is basically a patriotic American who helped his country in every single way (including the war) but did not get the fame or credit he deserved because to achieve all that this man had, he could not afford to concentrate on any one topic. This is a book which has enabled me to access what his most intermediate friends described him as, and not only was it a good source, but also an excellent read. If you want to know why American medicine really reached its pinnacle, this book is the answer.

                              2 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped.......2004-04-20

                              This could have been a fascinating book. Jets of matter and the stunning, often intricate bubbles of dying stars and other objects really spark the imagination. Unfortunately, this book doesn't do them justice.

                              The approach is very cerebral, with no sense of wonder whatsoever. For the most part it focuses on the mechanics behind most types of solar winds, jets, and other ejecta without offering good connections to actual objects we've seen (well, at least in pictures and animations). It would have been great to read a rundown on just why they think Eta Carinae or a powerful jet looks the way it does, written with an appropriate sense of fascination. Sadly, all we get is a dry account of various means by which heat, energy, etc. flow.

                              If your approach to astrophysics is technically focused enough, you may enjoy this book. It did hold my interest for the first 1/3 and avoids lots of heavy math in the main body of text. If you're a casual, or even ardent, laymen fan of cosmology and the like, you'll probably find it boring.

                              Try Turn Right at Orion for an outstanding example of how to make science captivating. Although woven through with a fictional voyage (similar to what Carl Sagen did with "Cosmos" on TV), it really grabs you.

                              Provides researchers in the field with a comprehensive and up-to-date account of current research on astrophysical jets. An important feature of the book is that it combines discussions of jets on stellar as well as galactic scales. There are ten chapters, authored by fourteen active researchers, all of whom are experts on their chosen topics. Recent hydrodynamic simulations of jets are included and reference to observations of actual jets is made where appropriate. The book has been coherently edited to provide a cohesive account of this field of study. It will be an important textbook for graduate students, and a valuable reference source for researchers in high energy astrophysics. 5 out of 5 stars Great observational and theoretical introductory survey of astrophysical jets.......2006-11-29

                              This book contains ten chapters on a range of observations and theoretical topics related to astrophysical jets. Unlike most of the other volumes in the Cambridge Astrophysics series, each chapter of this book was written by one or two specialists. The goal of this book is to provide a bridge between classical hydrodynamics and current research into astrophysical jets and related phenomena (i.e. this book will take the reader from textbook hydrodynamics to (or close to) current research). Topics include a review of non-thermal emission processes, observational summary of jets, stability of jets, formations of jets by supermassive black holes, and many others. Each chapter contains a detailed bibliography facilitating further research. This book is heavily weighted toward the light, fast jets of radio galaxies, although the final chapter discusses collimated flows from stars, YSOs, and other Galactic objects such as SS 433. Even though this book was published in the early 90s (1991), it remains a valuable research resource. Considerable advances have been made in the field since then, but this volume concentrates mostly on the basics, and contains surprisingly little dated material. This book was written primarily for advanced graduate students and researchers, and assumes considerable background knowledge in hydrodynamics, astrophysics, radio astronomy, and perhaps X-ray astronomy (I should mention that no knowledge of relativistic hydrodynamics is necessary to understand most of the book). I view this book more as a learning companion rather than a traditional text. If you are a graduate student doing a thesis (either theoretical or observational) on astrophysical jets, you'll find this volume a useful addition to your bookshelf.

                                Book Description

                                Though they differ vastly in scale and energy, protostars and extragalactic radio sources show a remarkable similarity in their morphology. What physics do they share? As the first of its kind, a workshop at the Space Telescope Science Institute provided a unique forum for astronomers from the fields of extragalactic and galactic/stellar jets to share their expertise and synthesize astrophysical links. A dozen invited reviews from internationally renowned figures are presented here as an edited and coherent review. Topics include acceleration and collimation mechanisms, magnetized accretion disks, thermal and synchrotron jets, optical and molecular outflow, and emission-line radiative bow shocks. Together these reviews provide a unique overview of astrophysical jets, crossing the usual boundaries of scale and energy, theory and observation. They summarize our present knowledge, highlight outstanding problems, and provide focus for future work. In this way they provide a unique reference for graduates and professionals in astronomy, astrophysics and physics.

                                    Book Description

                                    Relativistic jets are a powerful, spectacular, yet poorly-understood phenomenon associated with accreting black holes and neutron stars. The question of the internal structure - matter content and magnetic field - of relativistic jets is of prime importance for our understanding of the underlying physics. The study of circular polarisation is both challenging and potentially very rewarding, and when applied to relativistic jets has the potential to probe the structure of the jets in unique ways.
                                    This book compiles the contributions, both theoretical and observational, from a three-day workshop held in Amsterdam in July 2002, concerning the study of circular polarisation from relativistic jet sources.

                                      Book Description

                                      The subject of the book, the ubiquitous circumstellar disks around very young stars and the corresponding jets of outflowing matter, has recently become one of the hottest areas in astrophysics. The disks are thought to be precursors to planetary systems, and the outflows are thought to be a necessary phase in the formation of a young star, helping the star to get rid of angular momentum and energy as it makes its way onto the main sequence. The possible connections to planetary systems and stellar astrophysics makes these topics especially broad, appealing to generalists and specialists alike. The CD not only contains papers that could not be printed in the book but allows the authors to include a fair amount of data, often displayed as color images.
