Health Research: Essential Link to Equity in Development
Commission on Health Research for Development Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0195208382 |
Book Description
While one-fifth of the world's 5 billion people can now expect to live to see their 80th birthday, nearly half of the rest--about 1.6 billion people--suffer overwhelmingly the world's burden of unavoidable illness and premature death. Increasingly, citizens of developing countries are coming to believe that at the root of such inequity lies an attempt to apply "first world" solutions without sufficient adaptation to the realities of the third world. This landmark report of the Commission of Health Research for Development gives voice to such concerns, documents current inequalities in health, and outlines a new strategy for meeting health needs. Based on a two-year global investigation of health research and its actual and potential role in development, the report synthesizes data to show emerging and problematic epidemiological trends, under-resourced national health programs and persisting health disparaties. It also documents numerous examples of strong, effective health programs based on scientific research carried out or applied in developing countries. Finally, the Commission's report articulates an agenda for action, providing specific recommendations for the improvement of health in developing countries.

Digital Control Systems: Design, Identification and Implementation (Communications and Control Engineering)
Ioan D. Landau , and Gianluca Zito Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1846280559 |
Book Description
The extraordinary development of microprocessors and their extensive use in control systems in all fields of application has brought about important changes in the design of control systems. Their performance and low cost make them much more capable, in many circumstances, than analog controllers.
In order to take full advantage of this potential, Digital Control Systems demonstrates in detail how to design and implement high-performance model-based controllers combining system identification and control design techniques extensively tested in industrial milieux. The effective use of these techniques is illustrated in the context of various systems including: d.c. motors, flexible transmissions, air heaters, distillation columns and hot-dip galvanizing. Topics covered include:
• essentials of computer-based control systems;
• controller design methods (robust pole placement, long-range-predictive control, state space, digital PID, etc.);
• system identification techniques;
• practical aspects of system identification and digital control.
A number of recent methodological developments in control design and system identification, driven by applications, are presented, including:
• robust digital control design using sensitivity function shaping;
• plant identification in closed loop operation;
• reduction of controller complexity.
The text of Digital Control Systems is enhanced, for practical and tutorial purposes, by the use of software which illustrates the various concepts and algorithms and gives a feeling for the phenomena, discussed. The MATLAB ®/Scilab routines used for this purpose can be downloaded from the textbook’s website where additional material for teaching is available (slide presentations of the chapter material, data files for additional laboratory sessions and example files).
Graduate students in courses on digital control will find this text to be most helpful in learning the essential techniques of computer-based control while the wealth of additional material will make the tutor’s tasks of teaching and preparation quicker and easier. The book also provides practising engineers wishing to enhance their skills in this area with efficient and co-ordinated methods for the design and implementation of computer-based controllers.

Modelling Robustness, Sensitivity Reduction in Control Systems (Nato a S I Series Series III, Computer and Systems Sciences)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387178457 |
Book Description
Historically, one of the basic issues in control systems design has been robustness: the ability of a controlled plant to withstand variations in or lack of knowledge of its dynamics. Even if the dynamics of a system are accurately known for purposes of implementation, it is often desirable to design a control system based on a simplified model. Consequently it is essential to be able to guarantee a reasonable performance not only for the nominal plant, but also for its neighbouring perturbations: this is the issue of robustness. Since the beginning of this decade major advances have been made in this area, notably using the H -approach; this term is meant to cover the solution of sensitivity reduction, approximation and model reduction, robustness and related control design problems using the mathematics of Hardy spaces and related areas in Harmonic Analysis. This book contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Modelling, Robustness and Sensitivity Reduction in Control Systems", which was held at the University of Groningen, December 1986. Its aim was to explore the development of H -design techniques and its ramifications in Systems Theory in a unified and systematic way with the emphasis on recent advances and future directions in this fast developing area. In particular the following inter-related aspects were addressed: H -mathematical foundations, model approximation and robustness in control design, optimal sensitivity reduction, modelling and system identification and signal processing.

Sensitivity of Automatic Control Systems (Controls)
Efim Rozenwasser , and Rafael Yusupov Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849322936 |
Book Description
Although it arose much earlier in a variety of contexts, sensitivity theory became an independent branch of science in the sixties. Since then, researchers from around the world have continued to make great strides in both the theory and its applications. However, much of the work of Russian scientific schools and specialists remain unknown in the West. Sensitivity of Control Systems summarizes the results of the authors and their disciples in sensitivity theory, addressing the basic notions of the theory and the problem of selecting technical parameters of systems. The authors formulate problems for actual technical systems and their models, and establish relations between sensitivity theory and classical stability problems. They offer a significant, general theory for investigating the sensitivity of boundary problems and use elements of this theory for sensitivity analysis of solutions to nonlinear programming and variational calculus problems, as well as oscillatory processes. The book also presents general investigation methods for discontinuous systems, including those described by operator models. Full of powerful new methods and results, this book offers a unique opportunity for those in theoretical investigation and in the design, testing, and exploitation of various control systems to explore the work of Russia's leading researchers in sensitivity theory. Furthermore, its techniques for parametric perturbation investigation, Sensitivity of Control Systems will prove useful in fields outside of control theory, including oscillation theory, motion dynamics, and mathematical economy.
