    Book Description

How can not-for-profit organizations be sure they play by the rules when the rules aren't clear?

Due to recent, very public accounting scandals and the resulting Sarbanes-Oxley Act and other regulations, public companies have strict guidance on financial governance and accounting, including the functions and responsibilities of audit committee members. Though not-for-profit organizations are subject to increased scrutiny, there has been no detailed guidance for their audit committees. This book fills the void and helps not-for-profit organizations answer these questions:

Complete with checklists, sample questions, and an index for quick reference, Not-for-Profit Audit Committee Best Practices covers:

This heads-up, hands-on guide helps audit committee members select and structure appropriate best practices and function in the most effective manner for their unique not-for-profit organizations. It's also a valuable reference for board members, managers, independent auditors, and advisors of not-for-profit organizations.

    Download Description

Since not-for-profits are not required to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley, they have the advantage of being able to select from alternative ways of functioning. Not-for-Profit Audit Committee Best Practices helps audit committee members select from various best practices to tailor the functioning to their particular circumstances.

Not-for-Profit Organization Audits with Single Audits combines into one comprehensive, easy-to-use guide everything an auditor needs to perform audits of financial statements, audits in accordance with Government Auditing Standards, and single audits in accordance with Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-133. Comprehensive coverage of the relevant technical literature is combined with user-friendly advice based on actual experience, resulting in a technically sound and extremely usable audit guide. It incorporates the needed guidance for implementation of numerous accounting standards affecting not-for-profits. PART II covers the additional procedures that must be performed in the conduct of audits of not-for-profits in accordance with Government Auditing Standards and OMB Circular A-133. The format of Part Two is similar to Part One, enabling the auditor to easily build the additional requirements onto the requirements of a financial statement audit

                          Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Don't look like an idiot........2007-03-28

As an experienced clinician I was appalled to see a Death Note written by a medical student using the guide in this book. He titled it "Celestial Dischage"-- just as it is noted in the book. It was his first time, and he thought that was acceptable to put in a patient's chart.

If you expect to use a reference when you are either inexperienced, 3/4 brain dead after call, or both, don't risk your professional reputation on "cute."

4 out of 5 stars practical pocket book for interns.......2006-01-17

This book is all about overnight call situations that interns face. I'm an intern this year and I keep it in my pocket along with 2 other books: Sanford Guide and Pocket Medicine by Sabatine. There are plenty of books out there if you want to learn about disease processes and the physiology behind it all, but this is the only one I've found that has *practical* information. For example, tables of common prn meds, and how to approach cross cover issues. Great death note sample also.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful but overpriced.......2005-08-03

I thought that the book is very helpful on the wards and for my ER rotation. The book is concise and a quick read so it is best to read the book before the rotation starts. I read it so quickly that I wonder why the price is so steep.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-07-27

This book is very helpful for starting intern year and gives you really good advice for things to do on call. It also has good examples for admit notes, discharge summaries, common calls and common drugs. Great book!

                          5 out of 5 stars THE book.......2005-03-08

Yeah I just wanned to say that this book is dope. I mean for real, I had hella questions about all this medical stuff and this book was straight up dealing! Damn, so I'm an intern and when I be up at like 4:30 in the AM I be tired as HELL!! This book easy to use and helps me out when I'm all foggy minded. Damn, homie, 80 hours like what? But anyway, this thing has got my IV fluids and them dang arterial blood gases locked down from the top down!

                          For realz!

                          Aight yo I'm out

                          HOLLA!

                              Book Description

This engaging and wide-ranging biography casts new light on the life and careers of Percival Lowell. Scion of a wealthy Boston family, elder brother of Harvard President Lawrence and poet Amy, Percival Lowell is best remembered as the astronomer who claimed that intelligent beings had built a network of canals on Mars. But the Lowell who emerges in David Strauss's finely textured portrait was a polymath: not just a self-taught astronomer, but a shrewd investor, skilled photographer, inspired public speaker, and adventure-travel writer whose popular books contributed to an awakening American interest in Japan.

Strauss shows that Lowell consistently followed the same intellectual agenda. One of the principal American disciples of Herbert Spencer, Lowell, in his investigations of Japanese culture, set out to confirm Spencer's notion that Westerners were the highest expression of the evolutionary process. In his brilliant defense of the canals on Mars, Lowell drew on Spencer's claim that planets would develop life-supporting atmospheres over time.

Strauss's charming, somewhat bittersweet tale is the story of a rebellious Boston Brahmin whose outsider mentality, deep commitment to personal freedom, and competence in two cultures all contributed to the very special character of his careers, first as a cultural analyst and then more memorably as an astronomer.

5 out of 5 stars Lowell in Context.......2002-03-22

The first fully satisfying biography of a man who helped to change astronomy, sustained its popularity and mystery, and tested the wills of mainstream astronomers.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough and Revealing.......2002-01-18

Strauss is not content with telling us the story of Lowell's fascinating life--he portrays each milieu in which Lowell worked and lived with a complexity that gives us the tools to understand Lowell in context. For example, he gives us piquant details about life in the upper reaches of Boston Brahmin culture. One of the more interesting stories is Lowell's move from prominence in academia to the position of crank and critic of the increasing professionalization of astronomy.

This is the portrait of a restless mind, worth delving into.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly easy read!!.......2001-11-22

Strauss' historical look at Lowell is extremely engaging and I found this book hard to put down. Some great historical context about Boston and Japan really give you the feeling of what is was like to be there back in the 1800's. I recommend this to all.
