Answers and Much More.......2006-04-26

I found this book to be very enlightening indeed. I thought it was going to be sample answers and it was, but it also includes great info about the types of interview questions one can be asked such as behavioural and competency both of which are very now for interviewers. It also includes chapters on the basic theory of interviewing and a section on how to guess the questions which worked ok for me, I managed to guess about 50% of the questions I was aked. Anyway I have another interview next week so will have another read.

Full of great tips .......2006-04-16

I had job interview with a large bank in DC and I needed some help quickly so I ordered the download version. Too long to wait for the paperback. I liked this book because it gave me what I wanted, a way to answer the interview questions. I took the advice given by the authors and created my own answrs but they gave some great tips on what to say and not to say. Overall I would recommend this book, I m sure it gave me extra confidence. Still waitimg to hear about the job tho'

Just what I needed.......2006-03-28

I purchased the download version of this book as I didnt have much time to prepare for my interview and it was exactly what I needed. I hadnt done an interview for many years and this book gave me lots of pointers in terms of what to say and not to say. It is nicely written and very well laid out and I was able to get to the answers I needed very easily. It worked for me.

The title might leave you with the impression that this is a book for job candidates, but it's actually written from a manager's point of view. It does not contain anything that you can't find in every job search book. The "top answers" are the standard answers you'll find everywhere. It took me 30 mins to go thru the whole book.

The author takes himself too seriously - the first page peddles Oracle scripts from "the best DBA in the world" (?); claims that the illustrations are great (?) don't help either.
Some of the language is inappropriate - for example there is a sample police record for a fictitious job candidate with last name Scumbag (??)

Good Manager guide - worth the investment in the book.......2004-08-05

This is an excellent book for the manager who needs to find just the right employee. I was impressed with the coverage for the pre-interview stages and how you can identify those job candidates that are most-likely-to-succeed in the job. I also like the coverage on how to spot fakers and people who lie on their resumes.

Better still, I was impressed with the job interview questions and answers. The job interview questions are designed for a telephone interview, and the IT manager can just ask the questions and compare the responses to the "ideal" answer. The book also discusses how to find personal information without breaking the law.

Absolutely wonderful.......2003-08-16

I thought that this book was just outstanding. I would give it 6 stars if I could. I thought that the writing was excellent (I found myself frequently flipping back a few pages just to re-read certain passages over again), and that it was endlessly fascinating. The material on the relationship of Jews to Christmas is particularly interesting, as is the author's discussion of the myth of the "recent" commercialization of Christmas. He treats both Berlin and the song itself in a clear-headed yet loving way. I cannot recommend this little book highly enough and I congratulate (and thank) the author for a marvelously entertaining book.

White Christmas.......2003-06-22

This is a pretty interesting book regarding the writing of and eventual huge success of an American popular song.
The author gives good background information about Irving Berlin, the song's composer, plus an interesting look at the history of popular music in general during the days of the great composers.
Also of interest is the various incarnations of the song, from classic era songsters to more contemporary artists and including the use of it in various motion pictures and other venues.

An OK skimmer.......2002-12-13

I got this book because I like books that cover a single entity (one song, one movie, etc.). I ended up skimming it, though, after the introduction, which was a mess that rambled without any structure from paragraph to paragraph. By skimming the rest of the book, I was able to glean several really interesting tidbits I wanted to know about (such as the fact that "I'll Be Home for Christmas" was released a year after "White Christmas," clearly to cash in on the latter's success), but I didn't have to endure the style (or, for that matter, the typeface, which I don't see that often and which tripped me up visually a few times). Also, perhaps it's the author's youth, but there are small but nagging discrepancies here and there (for instance, he doesn't know the distinction between a Christmas song and a carol). And his opinions seem wedged into what is otherwise an objective look at the history of a song -- I frankly found myself not caring what this guy thought -- I just wanted to know what he knew. I'd say get it if "White Christmas" is your favorite song and if you don't already know too much about it or about Irving Berlin, but otherwise find yourself a good Berlin bio and enjoy that.

A Biography for a Christmas Standard.......2002-11-30

It's time to take a good look at the most popular song ever, top selling and most frequently recorded. _White Christmas: The Story of an American Song_ (Scribner) by Jody Rosen not only tells about the song everyone has heard so many times that no one really listens to it anymore, but also about the songwriter, American twentieth century history, and Tin Pan Alley and its descendants. It's a lot of baggage to load upon a pop song, but it is an amazing little song, and the book has a brisk story told with real love of the music and how it was shaped and how it shaped us.

It's a good thing that Irving Berlin didn't write about a Christmas "just like the ones I used to know." He was born Israel Baline in 1888 in a bleak town in Siberia. Russian peasants, drunk with Christmas cheer, often used the holiday as an excuse for pogroms against the Jews, and his first memory is of his house being burned down. Berlin got no formal musical training, but produced hundreds of songs. In January 1940, Berlin worked over the weekend on a song he became very enthusiastic about. He bustled into his office that Monday morning and said, "I want you to take down a song I wrote over the weekend. Not only is it the best song _I_ ever wrote, it's the best song _anybody_ ever wrote." Christmas 1942 was the first that masses of Americans, soldiers and sailors all over the world, would spend away from home, and could only dream of Christmases just like the ones they used to know. Crosby's version was shipped to them in recordings, and it topped the Hit Parade as a patriotic anthem, displacing "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition." The song signaled that recordings and performers were in and sheet music and songwriters were out. In 1957, Berlin tried to squelch an Elvis Presley version, but couldn't.

Rosen's clear, fully researched book is an essential biography of an American song classic, and will improve your understanding every time you inevitably hear the song again. It encompasses important ideas about the history of modern music, Jewish influence and assimilation, patriotism in song, and the evolution of celebrating Christmas. It is not strictly a Christmas book, for it is about much more than just the season. But it would be fine for those looking for serious and interesting reading for the holidays, or as a gift book for readers who think they have already heard all the song has to say.

Fascinating, Moving, Wonderful.......2002-11-24

This is one most lively, intelligent and orginal non-fiction books I've read in years. Not only does Rosen chronicle superbly Irving Berlin's amazing rags-to-riches story and the story of his most successful song but through both illuminates a larger story of how jewish immigrants - with great creative energy and drive for success and inclusion - transformed American culture. The role that WW II played in the song's massive success is also fascinating (and timely).

Warren's book is an excellent overview and summary of the major assumptions, events, and personalities of the Cold
War period. It is ideally suited to high school readers.

An overview for Junior and Senior High School Students!.......2000-04-30

Provides one of the few overviews of a subject not normally covered in this age range. Ignore the previous review, the liberal slant and college level language used, infers a biased student, who knows little except what overpaid college profs(who had little or no involvment in the actual event) tell them. Take it from this reviewer, who actually fought in the cold war. Your better off with an American slant(which is a whole lot closer to the truth than a Russian slant would ever be.) After all the title is The American Crusade Against the Soviet Union, what kind of bias did you expect.

Not what it claims.......2000-04-13

I started reading this book while doing research for a paper on the cold war, I thought that I'd read the preface for once, in order to get as much information as possible from the book by a seemingly qualified writer (Warren is the executive editor of the Columbia University Press and has a nice list of credentials). Within the preface, Warren stressed the importance of an objective approach to history and claimed that he did all he could to look at the events from both the sides of the USA and the Soviet Union even though he had a natural tendency to side with the Americans. He assured his audience, though, that his book was based on fact and he added his carefully weighed and thought out opinion only where necessary and with due respect to all parties involved. When I began reading the book, however, there were broad, egocentric and one-sided generalizations on almost every page. It seems as though Warren did not have any intention of relating the events of the cold war as they really happened, but only meant to use his influence to spread the conceited,unbending, anti-diversity ideas that started the cold war in the first place. This book does not seem reflect on the cold war so future misunderstandings and crises can be avoided, but seems only to applaud the arrogant, unenlightened, frightened minds that created it.
