Book Description

Desperate to jump-start the reform process in America's urban schools, politicians, scholars, and school advocates are looking increasingly to mayors for leadership. But does a stronger mayoral role represent bold institutional change with real potential to improve big-city schools, or just the latest in the copycat world of school reform du jour? Is it democratic? Why have efforts to put mayors in charge so often generated resistance along racial dividing lines? Public debate and scholarly analysis have shied away from confronting such issues head-on. Mayors in the Middle brings together, for students of education policy and urban politics as well as scholars and school advocates, the most thoughtful and original analyses of the promise and limitations of mayoral takeovers of schools.

Reflecting on the experience of six cities--Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and Washington, D.C.--ten of the nation's leading experts on education politics tackle the question of whether putting mayors in charge is a step in the right direction. Through the case studies and the wide-ranging essays that follow and build upon them, the contributors--Stefanie Chambers, Jeffrey R. Henig, Kenneth J. Meier, Jeffrey Mirel, Marion Orr, John Portz, Wilbur C. Rich, Dorothy Shipps, and Clarence N. Stone--begin the process of answering questions critical to the future of inner-city children, the prospects for urban revitalization, and the shape of American education in the years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2004-01-06

'Mayors in the Middle' is a must read for anyone interested in the politics of education. In a period characterized by growing public outcry that our schools are failing, increasing federal discretion over education policy resulting from the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act, and countless waves of education reforms, cities such as Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, DC, and Detroit have moved in the direction of giving mayors authority to control the public schools. In their new book, Henig and Rich have compiled ground break research from leading scholars in the field to examine the new phenomena of mayoral control of public schools. Although it may be too early to fully conceptualize the broad-ranging implications of mayoral control of public schools, Henig and Rich raise critical questions and successfully document the development of this mayor-centric reform. Individuals with an interest in education equity, federalism, governance structures, historical institutionalism, public policy, race, urban politics, and the future of America's public schools would find this book to be quite insightful. 'Mayors in the Middle' is eloquently written, timely, and intellectually engaging. Highly recommended!

                  Book Description

Many informed persons may not know how and why public schools were originally established. This book describes how the origins of public schools influenced the nature of urban schooling for the next 150 years and more. It reveals the relationship between the organizational practices of urban schools and penal and military communities of the distant, pre-bureaucratic past. The focus is on the social functions schooling preformed in American society and the organizational forms that were used to carry out these functions.

                        Book Description

This exciting new series of books presents fundamental concepts of medicine in a self-teaching format that complements the self-testing format of the current Pre-Test series. Each book in the series contains three to five chapters covering individual concepts integrally related to each other. Concepts in the series are chosen from those thought to be most difficult by medical students. The authors-all master teachers-write their chapters according to a specific, self-teaching format designed to help the student gain an understanding of these challenging concepts. Innovative teaching techniques are employed throughout. Each chapter "stands by itself" as a complete teaching unit on a particular subject, however each chapter also leads the reader to an understanding of the position of the particular concept within the greater body of medical knowledge. The format reinforces problem solving skills across the basic science and clinical disciplines and therefore represent an important study aid for the revised problem-oriented board examination.

                          5 out of 5 stars A very entertaining book!.......2006-04-02

Being written by two science fiction writers (Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens) and a scientist (Brian Muirhead, who worked and still works with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory), this book is both unconventional and highly entertaining. Not only the technical dimension of space exploration is highlighted, but also the human aspect. What makes people want to explore space? How is an idea translated into an actual mission? How are the new BFC-missions (Better, Faster, Cheaper) managed? Etc. etc.

This book gives a lot of information on past, present and future missions to Mars, information that is often not covered in other books.

As Brian Muirhead was flight system manager of the team that developed the Mars Pathfinder, the first rover that landed on Mars in 1997, a substantial portion of the book is dedicated to this mission.

The book contains many black-and-white photographs of (only) reasonable quality. In the middle of the book are 32 pages with really very high quality photographs and artwork.

All in all to me this book deserves a full five stars. I really enjoyed reading it.

                            Book Description

This book contains the invited papers presented at the Mars Exploration Past, Present, and Future Conference in Williamsburg, Virginia, in July 1991. Past missions are reviewed in terms of science returned and systems, operations, and management lessons learned. Present missions are examined briefly, and future missions are examined in the context of the Space Exploration Initiative.

Of particular interest are the papers on the Viking mission. They provide valuable management lessons learned for future program and project managers.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Frontier.......2000-06-15

When talking about the exploration of space, and in particular of the planet Mars, it is easy to fall into one of two categories : a) Over-technical b) Over-fantastic.

Fortunately, this book avoids both of those paths. Don't misunderstand - this is for those with a technical/scientific bent, but can be understood by lay-people. It is a high quality astronautical engineering book, focusing on the _how_, but pause is also given to the more human side, the _why_ - why go, why explore. Contributors of chapters come from reputable and solid backgrounds, with ideas that are backed not only by imagination, but with engineering know-how.

In short, this book provides a valuable reference for those interested in the technical aspects - if I win the fifty dollars for a review, I know what I'll ask for...
