Customer Reviews:
absolute must read.......2004-01-03
I had Dr. Lomax as a professor and he is a brilliant man and his book conveys that. It is an absolute must read for anyone considering overseas assignments.
An International Manager's MUST READ.......2002-03-22
A must read for anyone contemplating an overseas assignment or for anyone in a position to send key people abroad. Unlike many management how-to's this one is written from first hand experience, from both sides of the desk-sender and sendee. The light though pithy writing style carries the reader easily along, is engaging and clearly informative. The case studies Lomax uses are to the point and vividly descriptive; the lessons flow in a most logical and easy to follow sequence. Many illustrations, artfuly executed, mirror the writers easy style, add a measure of amusement and dramatize the subject matter. It's a shame that a high quality, clearly presented text on this subject has not been available in the past. The angst of so many returning "expats" might have been avoided. A real classic- destined to the difinitive work of its genre.

Boats with an Open Mind: Seventy-Five Unconventional Designs and Concepts
ASIN: 0071579907 |
Book Description
Why is stitch-and-glue boatbuilding so popular?
Any number of construction methods will produce a beautiful boat. But for the backyard builder with limited experience and a tight budget, the choice is not so complicated. Traditional plank-on-frame and cold-molded construction require complicated lofting and building molds--to say nothing of expensive tooling and lots of time. Stitch-and-glue construction, on the other hand, can produce the same results with a substantial savings in time and money. The process is quicker, easier, uses fewer parts, and produces a boat that is much easier to maintain--without the building molds and with only the simplest lofting. For tools, you need little more than a circular saw, a sander/polisher/grinder, a block plane, a framing square, a level, and a tape measure.
Sam Devlin has elevated stitch-and-glue boatbuilding to an artform, and his graceful designs have attracted the attention of backyard builders across the country. Here is all you need to know to build the boat of your dreams, whether it's a 7-foot dinghy or a 40-foot power cruiser. Devlin's Boatbuilding: How to Build Any Boat the Stitch-and-Glue Way shares the wisdom of his 16 years of experience designing, building, and helping others build his fleet of small sail- and powerboats.
It's all here, from choosing a design and setting up shop to painting the finished hull and launching. There is also a gallery of Devlin's designs and a detailed appendix listing sources for tools and other materials.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but no use to the first-time boat builder.......2007-06-21
Samual Devlin is clearly a god to many in the boat-building community, but this book is simply pitched too high for most beginners, and that's a shame given that it's marketed to those very beginners. The book's major flaw (or it's greatest strength, perhaps) is in its author's refusal to accept anything but the best tools or materials. So for instance he says "There can be no compromise: the plywood *must* be marine grade". I think it's fair to say that most people building stitch-and-glue boats are doing so for economic reasons, so why insist on hard-to-get highly expensive marine plywood?
You'll rapidly put this book down unless you're highly familiar with the arcane vocabulary of advanced boat-building which Devlin uses at every turn, and sadly, that's what I've done for now.
I *am* liking the simpler book by Jim Michalak - Boatbuilding for Beginners (and Beyond).
Stitch and Glue excellence.......2007-05-24
Devlins created a boat building book from vast experience that is easy to follow and understand. He delves into the build process and materials used with great detail and an enthusiasm that will surely rub off.
I need to build another boat!!
stich-and-glue boatbuilding system.......2007-01-19
If you have the time, money, tools and proper construction area you can build some fantastic boats that don't require all of the ribbing and lofting of conventional boatbuilding.
I found a few basic techniques in this book that I can apply to the building of small boats also.
Easy Boat Building Concepts thoroughly explained.......2006-11-04
I have read this book several times. He has a clear and logical way of presenting the stages of construction. His web site is informative and his video is equally as instructive. In terms of a complete "How to" series, I only wish other disciplines were as good.
In addition to the quality of his construction, I am particularly fond of his designs. Most other stitch and glue plans lack the elegance of Sam's designs.
Not just for boat building!.......2006-10-07
I bought this book because I wanted to prepare myself for building a boat in 2007, next year. In reading through it, I learned that what is covered is not just how to build a boat, but really more about how to finish a boat.
You may not understand this, but it's true, I'll explain.
Currently I am building a coffee shop from scratch, really, from scratch, I've gutted the place, I've put up new walls, I've built counters, I built a coffee roaster, I fixed / heavily modified an espresso machine, basically, I've done every part of it and I'm in to year two and my doors are still yet to be opened to the public (so far, it's just a speak-easy). It's been the hardest project to date for me and I've often considered ways of getting out of it, (mainly through the ending of my existance), but have continued all the same.
When I read; "...sometimes you have to hate it to finish it." and all the other advice he gives in the book on how to complete the project, it really gave me a sense of not only being able to bring my shop to completion, but gave me a greater sense of how to go about finishing any project that you really believe in, but run into trouble completing.
I also bought this book for information on shaping plywood, because I plan to make some bent-ply furniture - and the information contained in this book does greatly help on the subject of forming plywood.
Very well written and a joy to read.

My Favorite Cookbook!.......2005-04-13
There are not enough complimentary words that I know to describe this book. The authors have done a tremendous job of combining a few simple ingredients into what consistantly amounts to great recipes. I love the grilling marinades, breakfasts, picnic fare, and comfort stews. I can honestly say that I have never been dissapointed with anything from this book...ever.
An excellent book for those cooking on boats and ...........2001-08-31
If youýre cooking in a cramped space (boat, travel trailer, mountain cabin or tiny kitchen) and you do not have the time, skills or inclinations [like some people] and want flexibility with menus: buy this book. Thompson & Wheeler have mastered the above and done us all a favor in passing on both their recipes and tips. You can ýcreate a gracious meal with a minimum of fussý using Feasts Afloat. Not only are the menus creative and good, they are fast and I use them daily when I am on the run.
The recipes lend themselves to quick preparation. The ýGrilled Ginger Chickený is a must try and the ýFresh Lime Pieý was quick and great tasting. Ten Speed Press has done an great job in printing the color photos. This book has so many beautiful photos that it verges on the edge of being a ýcoffee tableý book, rather than a cookbook. Scores of photos illustrate in vivid color what the finished dish looks like and there are great sailing shots too. The side bars have helpful hints. The cover is made of a strong treated (water resistant) covering.
This is an excellent book for those cooking on boats, and a very good book for those cooking in small kitchen spaces. Recommended 4 1/2stars
Terrific Cookbook.......2000-10-17
I have used this book for years as the "Yachting Cookbook" and been one of those who tried to locate additional copies through out-of-print searches and in obscure coastal bookstores so I could give it to friends. I was delighted to find it republished. It is a marvelous book filled with delicious ideas for meals that are uncomplicated masterpieces. My husband likes to tell people that he "single-handed" our 49' sailboat around Vancouver Island with a "splendid cook". The credit for the meals goes to this book. Incidently, if you read Wm Buckley's "Racing Through Paradise", Liz Wheeler was the cook on that voyage and many recipes that are praised in that book are included "Feasts Afloat"
Not Just For Boaters.......2000-06-28
Owning both a sailboat and motorhome, my mother who is a terrible cook (something a son should never admit) recommended Feasts Afoat. I found this book very helpful for both on the water and on the road. Most of the recipes used 6 or less ingredients and required minimal storage. Cooking is one of my hobbies, I would rate this book gourmet quality.

Book Description
Space Sailing offers a clear, concise and fascinating insight into the concepts behind solar sails, covering all aspects of the technology, from the basic principles of the solar sail to proposed trajectories for trips into various planetary orbits. Large sections of the book are nontechnical, making the reading informative to the layperson as well as those involved in space research. No other form of space transportation has the potential to operate at such low cost, making space sailing an attractive alternative to other forms of space travel. This well-illustrated book includes a description of the range of applications for space sailing ships and analyzes their economic importance.

Excellent introduction to solar sails.......2000-11-26
"Space Sailing" by Wirght is an excellent introduction to the concept of solar sails. The first two chapters introduce the concept of space sailing and provides examples of possible uses. Later chapters go into more details on ship design, sail materials and construction, ship deployment issues, and ship control mechanisms. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in space sails.
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A947113. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis represents the results of a comparative analysis of current and proposed airfoil sections for use on sailing craft. The primary goal of this report is to develop a sail replacement that functions with the ease and durability of current sailboat sails, yet offers a marked improvement in overall performance, with minimum penalties of weight and construction complexity. State-of-the-art computational methods are utilized to determine the respective aerodynamic characteristics of a mode of a current windsurfer sail section and models of a proposed semi-rigid wing-sail section. Wing-sails offer the same promise of performance gains that modern airfoils have produced in comparison to early thin airfoils. An investigation into differences and possible benefits of the analyzed sections' aerodynamic loading and stall characteristics is made using fully viscous Navier-Stokes Computational Fluid Dynamic codes. Finally a full three-dimensional wing-sail computational model is constructed to identify further areas where sectional improvements would enhance the overall performance of the lifting shape.

Thanks Rod..........2000-09-10
The Cruising Catamaran Advantage is a must read for anyone, first interested in sailing or a seasoned captain. This book is a objective look into the pros AND cons to a "Cat" and also touches on building and construction. I would like to see a modern revision, but for the times (1988) this book IS hi-tech and fun to read.
Discussion of Cruising Catamaran superiority by enthusiast.......1997-11-01
This is a well written, enthusiastic book by an experienced sailor. Rod Gibbons believes fervently in the superiority of the Catamaran design versus a ballasted monohull, and he proves his case with humour and passion. Expect to obtain a comprehensive overview about the Catamaran design, ranging from prehistory to current construction techniques. This is a book you will read again and again.

Book Description
Solar sailing offers the possibility of low-cost long-distance missions, impossible for any other type of conventional spacecraft. The book provides a detailed account of solar sailing, at a high technical level but in a way accessible to the scientifically informed layman. Solar sail orbital dynamics and solar radiation pressure form the foundations of the book, but the engineering design of solar sails is also considered, along with potential mission applications. This book introduces the subject and at the same time provides a technical reference source.
Customer Reviews:
Ready about! .......2004-12-28
This is an excellent book on solar sailing. What I like best about it is that it gives not only useful results for several mission application case studies but the means to derive those results for oneself.
The book begins with a history of the topic and some possible applications, as well as some brief comparisons with other forms of propulsion and a couple of important performance metrics (in particular, the characteristic acceleration). Next is a discussion of radiation pressure, where we start by being carefully walked through the calculation of the force on a perfectly reflecting sail. That gets us in the right mood to examine radiative transfer methods, effects of a non-zero area for the solar disc, and solar sail force models for realistic sails.
After that, McInnes discusses solar sail design parameters, sail materials, sail structures, and sail configurations. That includes an excellent introduction to packing, deployment, and control issues.
Now we get to my favorite chapters: solar sail orbital dynamics, for both Keplerian and non-Keplerian orbits (both Sun-centered and planet-centered). The whole point of using solar sails is to make good use of a small but constant thrust, so a main application is to "levitate" the orbit above the Sun or above a planet. McInnes examines the characteristics, controllabilty, and stability of some of these orbits. And he then obtains results for orbits near Lagrange points (both planetary and lunar).
Few books in any field do as good a job at getting the reader up to speed on a topic. A person who has completed this book ought to be able to delve into any of the most recent literature in the field without fear.
The most comprehensive source on solar sailing.......1999-11-11
"Solar Sailing" is the most comprehensive book yet written on solar sailing. This is suggested by the introduction, which gives the history of solar sailing, discusses the basic principles, summarizes the topics of the rest of the book, and concludes with a rich list of references to further material. What follows are six more chapters that delve into the topics of solar sailing: solar radiation pressure, design, orbital mechanics, non-Keplerian orbits, mission applications, and laser sailing. In addition to being an excellent resource on both basic and advanced solar sailing principles, "Solar Sailing" also provides the very latest information on mission applications which are under study right now in chapter 6, like the Geostorm mission for early detection of geomagnetic storms and the sun-synchronous Mercury orbiter. Chapter 3, in addition to discussing solar sail design, describes several historical solar sail designs, mostly from the race to the moon and Mars proposed for the early 1990's.
Each chapter begins with an introduction to the concepts, then discusses them in increasing detail, starting with basic concepts that a beginner or enthusiast can use, and ending with topics that are useful for a detailed engineering analysis. A Equations are provided at every level, so a reader can immediately begin using the material in the book to study solar sailing for themselves. For example, the chapter on radiation pressure begins with a the history of the topic and quantum and electromagnetic explanations for light pressure. Following this are increasingly detailed discussions of the force acting on a solar sail, ranging from perfectly flat and reflective sails and treating the sun as a point, to radiative transfer methods for treating the sun as a disk-shaped light source and curved sails with imperfect reflection.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in solar sailing, from beginners to professionals. Although some of the material in this book can be found in other sources, like technical journals, this book organizes the information in a form that is immediately useful, and covers the basics required to understand the more advanced topics.
