Arguing that we have largely inadequate financial markets, dealing with relatively small risks, Robert Shiller makes a unique set of proposals for marketizing the biggest economic risks faced by society today, risks that really matter to most people. The new markets could diminish the impact
of international economic fluctuations and reduce the inequality of wealth. He proposes new international markets for claims on national incomes, on components and aggregates of national incomes, and for property such as real estate, and argues that these markets might dwarf our stock markets in
their activity and significance. He challenges the widespread presumption that any such new market would be infeasible, by offering solutions to technical problems of measurement and settlement. There are proposals for implementing markets in perpetual claims and a substantial section on the
construction of index numbers for use in settlement in the new markets.

Dated and with plenty of mistakes.......2006-03-01
I had to buy this book as it was the text book for one of the subjects that I am studying.
Dated: e.g. Many examples that deal with European currencies that were replaced by the Euro.
Errors: In the illustrations, there are some calculations that take incorrect parameters to derive the results (obviously yielding wrong results). This is misleading and time consuming.
Verbosity: The book explains in twenty pages something that can be explained in five.
No good.

For those of you who may not be aware, Charles Smithson is the "father" of the building-block approach to making derivatives understandable, showing a linked, family-tree approach, rather than each explaining each one separately with no clear connections. He is both a top practitioner with many years of senior-level experience, as well as an academic for more theoretical work.
I am amazed at some of the negative reviews. I can only think that is because there aren't enough partial differential equations and complex pricing/hedging models (there really aren't any, but that doesn't make this a simplistic book). I also teach finance at the Masters level, as well as teaching practical applications of derivatives to various bank clients.
In my oppinion, this is the single best book on derivatives for non-specialists that I have seen (and I have seen most of the derivatives books around). Even people on the trading floor would benefit from the clear forest-for-the-trees approach. This is not an easy book, though it doesn't require any more than school algebra (with the exeption of one chapter on option pricing, contributed by Cliff Smith and, even there, the calculus could be skipped over lightly). This book will give the reader a very good understanding of the most important aspects of derivatives and their applications. This is something that is often woefully lacking in banks, where the focus is on the minutiae of quantitative models, treated almost as an exercise in math, without a very clear understanding of the finance that the math is there to model. The treatment is broad and balanced, from pure product knowledge to issuer applications to investor applications and to banks managing their own market risk. This breadth is very rare in derivatives books.
My only criticisms are that there are some mistakes (as in most technical books that are not textbooks, benefiting from the review of many students, if you look hard enough for them) and there is insufficient emphasis now on credit derivatives and the management of credit risk, though I feel sure Charles Smithson will address that in the next edition - he has written a separate book "Credit Portfolio Management."
Perhaps someone should take up the offer of a free copy from a previous reviewer - a real "free lunch." I highly recommend this book to relative beginners, as well as to experienced practitioners who want more breadth.
Covers a lot of grounds on derivatives. Great reference........2003-05-29
I bought this book to give myself a thorough education on derivatives. And, I got it. It is very readable, yet it covers all the topics in adequate technical detail, so you can hold your own in the company of derivatives traders and the like. I often refer to this book, to refresh my memory on the different structure of option models, or how to value an interest rate swap. This is the sort of stuff you will not remember unless you use these concepts on a weekly basis. But, with this book, it does not matter, it is easy to refresh your knowledge.
Caveat Emptor.......2001-10-04
I also use this book as part of the Masters course in Sydney and I cannot remember the last time I picked it up to read as I have better things to do with my time than try and work through the glaring errors in formulae, graphs and general commentary. The presentation is verbose and circumlocutory and to add to the frustration often wrong. I feel obliged to warn potential buyers not to make the same mistake that I have. Gallitz on Financial Engineering is a far more interesting and accurate text and for the rigours of applied financial maths Mastering financial calculations teaches you more in 200 pages than Smithson could in a lifetime of trying to improve on this first edition. If anyone would like my copy of Smithson I'm happy to give it away for fear further sales may encourage McGraw Hill to continue publishing the book.
Financial Book, not for begineer.......2000-09-16
The book is written in a complex way. For example, a simple future contract, was explained in long and complex way. It is not able to show the point directly. Anyway, it is not a bad point. It has some quite excellent practical example. It is the most valuable parts of the book.

This book is obviously written by an expert, the relevance of the examples, the deep knowledge of financial institutions cultures, and some of the analysis is really outstanding and useful. If you have no clue of what managing a bank is, you have to read this book. The problem is that if you work regularly with banks, you will have to dig hard in "bank management 101", in other words, all the traditional management model (BPR, ABC - where Ms Mabberley is an expert, TQM, KAIZEN, ...) in another fashion ... Please, don't dilute quality in your next book, julie ! (I will buy it, but hope it adresses experienced people ...)

If you are looking for an advanced book to help you put together an Evaluation Plan for a training program, you want this book. If you know little about Evaluation Plans, then try Evaluation Basics (from ASTD) first, then get this book. Rapid Evaluation will bring you through low complexity to high complexity plans depending on what you need to do. The authors give sound advice about setting up the plan whether you're doing employee training or leadership training. I am currently using this book for a work project and am finding it invaluable. $$ well spent.

The Rapid Evaluation of Potential Fields in Particle Systems presents a group of algorithms for the computation of the potential and force fields in large-scale systems of particles that are likely to revolutionize a whole class of computer applications in science and engineering.
In many areas of scientific computing, from studying the evolution of galaxies, to simulating the behavior of plasmas and fluids, to modelling chemical systems, a numerical scheme is used to follow the trajectories of a collection of particles moving in accordance with Newton's second law of motion in a field generated by the whole ensemble. Extending the earlier work of Rokhlin, Greengard has developed general, numerically stable methods for evaluating all pairwise interactions in linear time, a great improvement over the quadratic time required by the naive approach, and significantly better than any other proposed alternative.
The "Rokhlin-Greengard" algorithm promises to make previously prohibitive simulations feasible, with speedups of three to four orders of magnitude in a system of a million particles. Moreover, the algorithm is well-suited for vector and parallel machines, and should make full use of their capabilities. The author presents his work with great clarity, and demonstrates the superiority of his methods both by mathematical analysis and by the results of numerical experiments.
Leslie Greengard received his doctorate from Yale University where he is a NSF Postdoctoral Fellow in the Computer Science Department. The Rapid Evaluation of Potential Fields in Particle Systems is a 1987 ACM Distinguished Dissertation.

The first part of this thesis develops an automated decision aid to rapidly revise the current air tasking order (ATO) so as to: maximize achievement of target destruction goals (weighted by target prionties) minimize attrition risk to employed assets and disrupt the current ATO as little as possible. The second part of the thesis develops a detailed test and evaluation plan to conduct a comparison of two competing automated decision aids and the current manual reassignment methods. Critical operational issues measures of effectiveness and measures of performance were developed to fully evaluate operational performance. The time-sensitive-targeting decision aid was tested and validated during major air strike live exercises at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One. Careful measurements comparing the re-taskings recommended by the decision aid against actual decisions demonstrated that in every case the model's solutions were of better or equal quality maximized combat asset utilization and were achieved significantly faster.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Digital signal processing (DSP) has become a popular method for handling not only signal processing, but communications, and control system applications. A DSP application of interest to the Air Force is high speed avionics processing. The real time computing requirements of avionics processing exceed the capabilities of current single chip DSP processors, and parallelization of multiple DSP processors is a solution to handle such requirements. Designing and implementing a parallel DSP algorithm has been a lengthy process often requiring different design tools and extensive programming experience. Through the use of integrated software development tools, rapid prototyping becomes possible by simulating algorithms, generating code for workstations or DSP microprocessors, and generating hardware description language code for hardware synthesis. This research examines the use of one such tool, the Signal Processing WorkSystem (SPW) by the Alta Group of Cadence Design Systems, Inc., and how SPW supports the rapid prototyping process from an avionics algorithm design through simulation and hardware implementation. Throughout this process, SPW is evaluated as an aid to the avionics designer to meet design objectives and evaluate tradeoffs to find the best blend of efficiency and effectiveness.

It contains 4 panel sessions (the recording transcripts of the galactic 'tertulias'), an introductory historical overview on the Galaxy research, 17 reviews, and the proceedings of more than 50 oral and poster contributions. This book is not a new edition of a previous volume but it is in some way related to the book "The Formation of the Milky Way" (1995; Cambridge University Press), which contains the proceedings of the first IAA-IAC-University of Pisa meeting, held in Granada ten years ago, on the formation of the Milky Way, (see Shore’s introduction). Where many other books focus their attention on singular galactic components or specific driving forces, this title provides a wide overview on the gaseous and stellar components and on the physical mechanisms which maintain the dynamical equilibrium of such a complex system as the Galaxy. The book, intended for graduate students and researchers, provides a valuable overview on the different physical mechanisms which drive the galactic gas-stars feedback.
