More garbage..........2007-01-30
...from the CEO of yet another "Toxic Company".
I bought this book from another bookseller as a closeout clearance book (for less than five dollars), and I think I paid too much!!
Overall the book's writing stlye is disjointed, as if it was made up of a collection of other articles and websites, rather written as a book.
As for the content: I'll borrow what another reviewer had to say, it's the obvious and the wrong. If you know anything about business, you don't need this book, because most of it is common knowledge. The rest of it is just plain wrong!
You'd be better off reading Storey's Guide to Raising Pigs: Care/Facilities/Management/Breed Selection.
Must read for managers looking for ways to improve performance!.......2006-08-02
For those managers who are looking for a clear, logical approach to improving your organization's performance this book provides a concrete way to get there.
Stiffler's well thought out approach to driving performance makes absolute sense and is clearly described with well written analogies and examples from real life.
It gave me a number of concepts I had never come across before and made me change the way I think about how to motivate an organization to work together toward common goals more successfully.
If you read this book, you will be glad you did.
...hasn't this been tried before??.......2006-07-29
So I ended up with this book because of work, and while I'm reading it I keep thinking 'Where have I heard about this before??'. Then it hits me: ENRON!! They used this same system of incentives, reviews, and bonuses as what is detailed in this book. The end result for Enron was it destroyed the company.
So, I definately disagree with a lot of what's in this book, but the bigger problem is what ISN'T in the book - namely the costs. Any plan has costs and benefits and in the end you have the weigh those costs and benefits to decide if you want to use the plan. But, Stiffler treats his "Action Plans" as if there are no real costs. It's typical salespitch clap-trap. What about employee turnover (a major expense for almost any business), or damage to employee morale and teamwork (difficult to quantify but very important to most businesses)?
I'd have to say that the cost of this kind of "Performance" is way too high for the very small benefits it might offer.
Don't waste your time.......2006-04-01
The only information in this book is the 'obvious' and the 'wrong'. For instance the author's insistence on his framework for performance (align, measure, reward, report, analyze):
ALIGN: Kinda, obvious isn't it. There's no point in having duplicate departments or wasted efforts. Most businesses have gotten this problem solved at the Business Plan level.
MEASURE: Dead wrong. There's no quicker way to kill morale than micromanaging employees down to the level of how long it takes them to answer the phone. Besides why are you wasting money employing people to "measure" your other employees?
REWARD: "Pay for Performance"- Perhaps the worst idea in American Business since "New COKE". Good employees won't be motivated by extra money (sure they'll like it, but they'd do a good job without it). So the only thing this does is create a whole new crop of mercenary employees.
REPORT: Because how else can you justify all that money you wasted on MEASURING. Besides nothing builds a team like telling them how they are different from their co-workers, right? WRONG!
ANALYZE: Because those mercenary employees are really only interested in the money, so you have to tell them what the report means!!
This book is bad ideas followed by worse ideas. Who edited this thing anyways??
Required Reading.......2006-03-29
Unlike the other books I was asked to read for work Performance was easy to read and apply. This is a good book for anyone in management who wants to improve the way they measure performance.

Book Description
Five years after its first publication, with more than 150,000 copies in print, Final Gifts has become a classic. In this moving and compassionate book, hospice nurses Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley share their intimate experiences with patients at the end of life, drawn from more than twenty years experience tending the terminally ill.
Through their stories we come to appreciate the near-miraculous ways in which the dying communicate their needs, reveal their feelings, and even choreograph their own final moments; we also discover the gifts--of wisdom, faith, and love--that the dying leave for the living to share.
Filled with practical advice on responding to the requests of the dying and helping them prepare emotionally and spiritually for death, Final Gifts shows how we can help the dying person live fully to the very end

A must have for everyone.......2007-09-30
This book had everything I needed to understand what my dad was going through as he slowly prepared to die. It made it all so understandable and much easier to accept. Not only is everything explained, it gives concrete examples from the author's experiences as Hospice nurses. Such an informative and comforting book to have...I have read it numerous times and find new things each time as the dying process progressed. I would recommend it to everyone.
A Tad Sugar -Coated?.......2007-09-28
I hate to be a wet blanket because so many people have drawn so much strength from this book. I found it to be extremely helpful in learning to listen to the symbolic language of dying people--a perspective that, in itself, is worth the read. It troubles me, however, that almost all of the deaths were reported as peaceful, even joyous, that almost all family members were healthy and fulfilled. Most of the dying people were young, smart, and/or extremely articulate.
I would have appreciated an account that included the not-so-pretty experiences of death--the ambiguous, ambivalent, hard, messy parts.
Including those pieces would have made the book more helpful.
The interventions of the authors were somehow just too neat and tidy.
Should be required reading for every human being!.......2007-09-26
My daughter and I think that EVERYONE should read this book. Sooner or later, most of us will need it. I read this book after bringing my Mother
home from hospital and placing her under Hospice care. I was with her 24/7 for that last month she lived. I cannot even begin to tell you what a help this book was to me and all members of my family. This book changed our lives. We look at life and death so differently than we did previously. I felt honored to be there through all the changes and the death of my Mother.
A book to share.......2007-09-18
I read this book while my grandmother was dying; I wish I had read it sooner. I have purchased multiple copies of this book and try to have a copy on hand at all times to share with the next person experiencing this process. The insights that the authors share are helpful in understanding this process without attempting to put it into a religious context, but in the dying person's language. They explain the value of listening to that person and what they are saying and respecting their choices.
Everyone needs to read this book, not just those who are experiencing this now, with someone, but everyone. We all will face this death sooner or later and the preparation this book gives invaluable insight into that final gift.
GREAT BOOK!!!!!.......2007-08-30
This book will help families and health care professionals understand the precious time surrounding death. So well written, it will make you laugh and cry and feel more comfort around a topic our society tends to avoid. I work in oncology and highly highly recomend this book to nurses, physicians, families, ANYONE. We all deal with death and this book really helps you to understand a new perspective!
Book Description
This new book gives voice to an emerging consensus among bereavement scholars that our understanding of the grief process needs to be expanded. The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do.
Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present.
Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.

Book Description
It is important to recognize and accept the uniqueness of each individual's response to loss, dying and death. This excellent second edition conveys the message that understanding and care should be valued as highly as efficiency and cost-effectiveness in today's high-tech medical system. Death and Dying: Understanding and Care identifies patterns of response to dying and death in American society, it discusses problems associated with the cessation of life, and it examines the structure and process of interaction among the terminally ill, their families and helping professionals. THIS TITLE IS DESIGNATED AS A KIP (KEEP IN PRINT) EDITION AS OF 1/6/00 AND WILL BE REPRINTED BASED ON CUSTOMER NEED/DEMAND.

Book Description
Surviving multiple-AIDS related loss losing more than one loved one to AIDS has cumulative and continuous effects while stigmatization and the abscence of traditionally available support systems handicap recovery. This book strives to legitimize the profound pain experienced by many survivors of AIDS. Normalizing the abnormal experience of survivors is an important coping strategy emphasized throughout.; Taking a personal look at this tragedy, the book presents the stories and experiences of survivors. It also outlines the historical context of AIDS and characteristics of multiple-AIDS related loss, and explores grieving multiple loss and the problems for survivors in both grief, adjustment, and traumatization. Other topics covered include the impact on families of origin and families of choice, self identity and existential anxiety, specific suggestions for both helping survivors and enabling them to thrive, and professional issues in treatment.
Customer Reviews:
A very useful handbook for an impossible process.......1998-10-30
This book has helped me to understand the experiences that I have gone through in my own life. It helped me understand that my feeling are normal and that any experience of multiple, on-going loss will have a profound impact. The interviews with multiple loss survivors resonated strongly with me and I now know I am not alone. Especially useful were the sections on spirituality and existentialism. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered painful loss due to AIDS.
Too academic and no "heart"........1997-09-24
I read this book hoping it would help with multiple AIDs loss in my own life. I was very disappointed. The book is written in a style that left me cold. It is a text book and one which has no "heart", nothing in it seemed to speak to the person reading. The author is attempting to impress the reader with his research, interviews etc but one wonders why the author wrote the book at all if only to write a thesis for other psychotherapists. To say the book is for individuals dealing with multiple losses is misleading. I would not recommend this book.

Book Description
Volume 7 of the Handbook of Magnetic Materials provides an overview of some of the most exciting topics in magnetism today.
Firstly, a substantial step forward in the understanding of metallic magnetism has been reached by means of electronic band structure calculation. Progress in this area has been made not only due to the availability of high speed computing machines but also due to sophistication in the computational methodology. Two chapters are devoted to this subject, one of which is devoted to the elements and the other dealing primarily with 4f and 5f systems, including examples of the large group of intermetallic compounds. In both chapters the authors have concentrated on explaining the physics behind these band calculations. The chapters are written in a manner understandable to scientists having no experience with band calculations.
Thin film technology has become a key issue in high density magnetic and magneto-optical recording and will be dealt with in future volumes of the Handbook. The present volume introduces the field with a chapter on the magnetism of ultrathin transition metal films, describing the richness in novel magnetic phenomens that has been encountered in the past few years in these materials. Of equal interest are the novel magnetic phenomena observed when magnetic moments are incorporated in a semiconducting matrix. A comprehensive description of these materials is found in the chapter on diluted magnetic semiconductors. A separate chapter is devoted to the progress made in the field of heavy fermions and valence fluctuations, emphasis being placed on the important results obtained by means of neutron scattering. A detailed review of the progress made in the field of rare earth based intermetallic compounds in combination with 3d transition metals completes this multifaceted volume.
