Great overview of Performance coaching.......2000-06-06
The author has provided a really effective, yet easily understood overview of performance coaching. Included are many activities, tips, models and other useful tools to help in coaching employees on the job. This is an excellent resource for self-study or use in a classroom environment.
The coaching fundamental skills.......2000-06-06
Supervisory roles are changing to match new market demands, specially organizations that have moved from a mechanistic structure to a team structure. For example roles have changed from a directing, dictating and competing behaviors to a more guiding, participating and cooperating approaches. A supervisor success depends on the ability to work effectively through people. Similarly, employee's abilities to grow personally and expand professionally depend on the encouragement of their supervisors. Coaching is defined by Robert W. Lucas as "a simple process used to develop employees through on going one-on-one communication, where supervisors and employees jointly strive to identify, develop, and reach performance goals". Where effective coaching does not exist or fail to be continuous, then issues such as high turnover, disciplinary and performance problems arise affecting the employee/supervisor relationship and the organization as a whole. By using coaching, you set up a potential win-win environment for yourself and for your employees. The major characteristics of an effective coach are cited: excellent communication/listening skills, technical proficiency, receptivity to feedback, goal orientation and team player mentality. Some of the most common benefits of coaching are a reduction on costs and turnover, improved quality and quantity of work, enhanced employee growth, improved problem-solving ability, increased likelihood that goals will be reached, and enriched transfer of training. When you have any type of change in your organization then you must consider using coaching (For example, a merger, downsizing expansion, or relocation is ocurring within the organization). One of the changes that every organization faces is when a new employee join the team. The initial taks of greeting and orienting new employees are very important for you to delegate, so ensure that general company orientation and specific work-unit related guidance is provided. Another opportunity for coaching is by encouraging employees to strive for more responsibility and potentially replacing you on a temporary or permantent basis. It would help a coach to take vacations, special assignments and even promotions since a qualified association is ready to step into his/her position. The Coaching Process Model (CPM) as a systematic process needed by supervisors when coaching. Eight phases compound this model: 1. Establish Goals 2. Collect Performance Data 3. Analyze Performance 4. Review and Modify Performance Goals as Needed. 5. Identify Developmental Resources 6. Develop an action plan 7. Implement Strategies 8. Evaluate Performance. Most of the above tips deal with communication skills, so a solid on-one communication needs to be present. A two-way communication model is described where a sender, message, reciever and feedbak are key elements. If any of these elements are missing, interpersonal communication can not take place and relationships will break down. Failure to send a clear message , listen carefully or to provide feedback ends the exchange of information. Feedback is given by written correspondence, verbal communication, non-verbal communication and trappings. When using feedback try to ask questions such as Is this the right time to provide this feedbak? Is this the right place? Is this the appropriate person to whom I should give this feedback? What is the best way to communicate my message? Giving and receiving possitive and negative feedback are important to be managed by coaches so everyone in the organization benefits from it. If you use good communication skills then you would develop sound relationships with employees, peers and your own boss. What motivated employees thirty years ago does not always work today. Employees in today's workplace are more independent, better educated, more traveled, and less likely to stay in one job their entire career. That's why a coach needs to identify associates' individual and group "hot buttons" or what inspires them. Once a coach have determined the factors that affect employee performance then can address performance gaps. Your focus should be only on performance-related issues, and you should refer employees' personal problems to human resouces or other qualified sources. Employees fail to perform or meet goals generally for the following; 1. They Won't. They are not motivated or they have a poor attitude (lack of concern for work quality, low initiative, and lack of involvement). 2. They Can't. They lack the ability, outside factors impede them (co-workers, technology, procedures, policies, etc,) or inadequate supervisory guidance. 3. They Don't Know How. Lack of technical or job knowledge. This book also analyzes the dealing with superstars. A superstar can be either very helpful or terribly frustrating, depending on a number of factors. These are employees who exceed deadlines, constantly volunteer for additional assignments, help others, test your coaching abilities, etc. This sounds excellent ah? But if their only purpose is to make themselves look good at the expense of you and their team then you have a problem. If this is happening, then put them in leadership positions (team leaders, coordinators, project managers), expand their job responsabilities, listen them as peer coaches and involve them in decision making...

Book Description
When first published in 1962, Sarah Patton Boyle's narrative of personal growth and change was highly praised and quickly sold more than sixty thousand copies, though few of them in the South. In it we witness Boyle's journey from sedate Virginia housewife to civil rights activist via an often naive, but ultimately courageous path.
Catalyst for Boyle's conversion was African American attorney Gregory Swanson's successful suit for admission to the University of Virginia Law School in 1950. Boyle wrote Swanson a friendly note of welcome--and prided herself on addressing him as "Mr." Her awkward efforts to help led her to T. J. Sellers, editor of Charlottesville's black newspaper, The Tribune, and to what they came to call "The T. J. Sellers Course for Backward Southern Whites." It was the beginning of a remarkable friendship which is traced in their correspondence, selections from which are published here for the firt time.
Although she could not have imagined it when she wrote that note to Gregory Swanson, by 1962 Sarah Patton Boyle had become the most outspoken white integrationist in Virginia. In addition to writing, speaking, and organizing for the NAACP and other groups, she gained national attention when an article she had originally titled "We're Readier Than We Think" appeared in the Saturday Evening Post under the inflammatory title "Southerners Will Like Integration." A wave of hostile reactions from across the country included crosses burned on her lawn.
This reprinting of The Desegregated Heart, long out of print, adds significantly to the new work that attempts to unravel massive resistance. For all who seek to understand the civil rights movement in this country, it recaptures the contribution of not one but two people who proved themselves part of the very backbone of a new racially progressive South that is still in the making.
Introduction by Jennifer Rittenhouse.
Customer Reviews:
A life-changing kind of book.......1999-05-06
This book truly changed my life when I enrolled at the University of Virginia during the civil rights years of the 1960s. It was in many ways a roadmap for me during those contentious times. Nowadays whenever I see an old copy at a booksale, I buy it and pass it on. If only there had been hundreds, thousands, like it, the history of the south might have been so much better in the twentieth century. I remember hearing Sarah Patton Boyle speak on campus, and sitting next to her at a church service after President Kennedy was assassinated. I guess what I want to say is that so many books are paper and ink (and some of them tragic wastes of good trees)--and then there are the others. This is one of the others. I recommend it highly. In fact, I have recommended it to the Modern Library for their list of the hundred most important nonfiction books of the century.
Sarah Patton Boyle's experiences in Civil Rights.......1998-02-07
Sarah Patton Boyle was a white person born into one of Virginia's "best families." During the 1950s and 60s Boyle became an activist for African American Civil Rights in Virginia. This book beautifully narrates Boyle's awakening to the plight of African Americans, and her response. An honest and forthright account, Boyle details the inner anxieties of a person moving from one world view to another. She chronicles her childhood and indoctrination with the repressive "Southern Code" that guided race relations in the South. According to Boyle, the Southern Code allowed whites to think of themselves as gracious and generous paternalists while economically exploiting African Americans. Not until the 1950s did she see how racist and dehumanizing the whole scheme was. When she did she became an activist in the Civil Rights movement. In the process she lost her belief not only in the goodness of white southerners, but in the goodness of humanity in general. She moved more towards an orthodox Christian worldview that stressed on the one hand the sinfulness of mankind and on the other the need for a strong commitment to love. This book definitely deserves to be considered a signigicant piece of Southern literature and a valuable resource for those interested in understanding the complex history of southern race relations. -Vernon Horn

Useful Study.......2004-08-26
Human Rights and Societies in Transition: Causes, Consequences, Responses edited by Shale Horowitz, Albrecht Schnabel (United Nations University Press) Human rights violations are often particularly severe in transition societies that are undergoing significant political, social, and economic transformations. Improving human rights practices in transition societies should therefore be a central goal for domestic reformers and the international community alike. This makes sense not only because of the intrinsic value of improved human rights protection, but also because of the indirect effects that such improvements have on democratization, economic development, and conflict resolution.
The book is a joint effort by 17 scholars from various parts of the world, specializing in political science, sociology, law, and regional studies. It explores the contemporary international human rights regime, the factors predominantly responsible for human rights violations in transition societies, longterm consequences of such violations, and political remedies.

Book Description
Jagdish Bhagwati, one of the world's leading economists, offers a fascinating overview of the policies that produced India's sorry economic performance over a third of a century. His analysis puts into sharp focus the crippling effects of the inward-looking, bureaucratic regime that grew to Kafkaesque dimensions, starting in the early 1950s. It provides a coherent and convincing rationale for the economic reforms begun in June 1991 by the new government of Prime Minister Rao. These reforms are set into historical and analytical perspective. Written with wit and elegance, this text of the 1992 Radhakrishnan Lectures at Oxford has quickly gained a wide readership.

Customer Reviews:
Who Knew History Could Be So Fascinating?.......2002-11-09
Usually most history books are as dry as the dust with which they deal. But with THE HISTORY OF EARTH, Hartmann & Miller tackle with vast success a topic that is only marginally understood,at best, by the layman. And make no mistake; this history is for the layman, but one who has a desire to know where we come from and where we may be going. Part of the learning process involves digesting a flood of data and making sense of it. Hartman & Miller use dozens of drawings, pictures, and mattes to bring to life a series of threads that they weave into a coherent whole.
What the authors reveal is a planet that may well stand unique in the universe. The precious element called life arose on earth in such a fortuitous manner that the odds of life having spontaneously arisen in any form were so staggeringly improbable that I marvel that I am here right now to pen these words. Yet, life did arise here, and Miller & Hartmann trace the long sequence of twists and convolutions stretching from the Precambrian right up to the present day. Most readers who go to the trouble of buying this book probably took a course or two in Earth History in school. What this book provides is a much longer and more comprehensible version of the geological timeline that readers have seen but failed to grasp. After finishing this work (I read it as if it were a novel), I concluded that if we here on earth are truly alone in the cosmos, then we had better take full advantage of our having won the Cosmic Lottery. We are not likely to win twice.
Excellent and engaging reading.......1998-12-12
This book was wonderful in that it gave me a valuable and easily understandable introduction to earth science, evolution, plate tectonics and planetary science, to name a few subjects. The only glaring mistake in the book, which I recognised because I am a biologist, is that the author refers to DNA as being made up of amino acids. This is incorrect. Proteins are made of amino acids; DNA and RNA are composed of nucleotides, entities completely different from amino acids. Despite this problem, the book is still excellent reading. I am buying several copies to give as gifts to family.
The best book on natural history you'll ever read. Period........1998-09-08
As a trained engineer and educator, I've scanned, read and studied many books on science. This is far and away the best I've ever seen. As magnificent as the painted illustrations are, they simply match and support the superb quality of the text itself.
Covering the full range of natural history, "The History of Earth" not only explains how the earth and life evolved, but explains how we gained this knowledge, or why we believe it to be so. Where multiple theories exist to explain something, they are each given fair coverage, with the evidence for and against each theory explained.
But most important, the book is accessible to all adults as well as to children. I began reading it (with some side explanation) to our kids when they were 7 and 10, and they loved it.
The book begins with an explanation of the formation of the Earth and Moon, describes the likely origins of life on our planet, and explains the changing environment and how that led to the origin of life. This is followed by in-depth treatment of the evolution of the diverse lifeforms leading to today's species, and excellent coverage of recent and current geological phenomena. The book concludes with a projection of the likely future of the earth over the next billion years or so.
I cannot praise this work highly enough. If you only buy one science book for you or your kids, this is the one you want.
The tale of our home & its history written for all readers........1998-08-29
This is, and remains, one of the best books I have ever read about the long history of our Earth. Beginning from the brief introduction of the history of geology and the creation of the solar system, to its predicted end, this is a clearly written, beautifully illustrated book.
It is clear enough to educate and involve the novice, while sufficiently technical and detailed for the experienced geologist. While now seven years old, much of the contents are still resonant today, and many of the theories presented are borne out today.
It's storytelling style and willingness to cover all the details and controversies of an issue, from the Great Dying, to the formation of the moon make this a terrific and interesting read. Combined with the book The Discoverers, you can paint for yourself a wonderful portrait of our world and our civilization. Enjoy.
