Customer Reviews:
Simplistic.......2007-05-14
I work in a CPA firm and found this book to recommend simplification in writing to the point of absurdity. It is a fact that there is a 'language' for business, and this book spends far too much time advising the reader to take complex or wordy phrases and simplify them to an almost moronic degree. While I agree that business writing is often overly and unnecessarily convoluted, this book seems to ignore a business-like paring down and instead invite the reader to return to elementary-school quality writing. I definitely did not feel that the book was a worthwhile investment, especially at the inflated price for which it retails. It is possible that it would benefit those in the accounting field whose clientele are completely non-business oriented or have little business knowledge.
Excellent for College Students in Business.......2007-03-08
I'm an accountancy major at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This has greatly helped me on my group cases where I write memorandums and other professional communication. Writing hasn't come easily for me (like numbers have) but this book helps me find my weaknesses and gives me suggestions for them. At first I wondered why such a small book was so expensive, but the price is definitely worth it!

Book Description
A unique collection of time standards, manufacturing methods, and overall `rules of thumb' used for cost-estimating electronic equipment and systems. As the only book available on the subject, it covers all operations from machining and sheet metal fabrication through wiring, circuit board assembly, electrical testing, and packaging. In addition, it describes the fields of production schedule determination, personnel facility planning ratios, and concept estimating.
Book Description
Why are some organizations successful, while others perish in the marketplace? Evidence is growing to suggest that a key part of the answer is communication. How people interact with each other, or fail to do so, often determines an organization's overall prospects of success. Accordingly, there is growing interest in techniques, which can be employed to measure current communication effectiveness and enable targets to be set for improvements.
The Handbook of Communication Audits for Organisations equips readers with the vital analytic tools required to conduct assessments. Owen Hargie, Dennis Tourish and distinguished contributors drawn from both industry and academia:
*Review the main options confronting organizations embarking on audit;
*Discuss the merits and demerits of the approaches available;
*Provide case studies of the communication audit process in action;
*Discuss how audit findings can be interpreted so suitable recommendations are framed;
*Outline how reports emanating from such audits should be constructed.
The Handbook will be invaluable to students of organizational communication, as well as the growing number of communications managers in the business world.
Customer Reviews:
Great Communication Audit Resource.......2007-01-05
If you need to perform or receive a communication audit, this book is an excellent resource. It provides case studies, sample audit questions and resources to help you plan and execute an audit.
The book focuses on the internal audit process, so it isn't much help for those seeking to do external communication audits. It also is best suited for employee audits, but it can be adapted for use in a non-profit/volunteer setting.
For those businesses wanting to learn more about internal communication issues, this book is right on track. The language is easy and approachable (although be prepared to deal with English word spellings). It is very practical and a book that should be on your shelf if you're doing internal communication audits.
Review of Handbook of Communication Audits for Organisations.......2000-09-29
Owen Hargie, Professor of Communication at the University of Ulster and Dennis Tourish, senior lecturer at University of Queensland, Australia, introduce the concept of communication audits in their handbook. This book is useful for employees involved in communications audits or those conducting audits for an organization. Their book examines methodologies for audits including a chapter each on questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, and log-sheets. The handbook provides practical help for auditors including a section on possible survey questions as well as attributes of a world-class communication system. A section of the book includes real-world examples where the authors have conducted similar communication audits to the ones they describe in the introduction. These case studies show how application can be made of the principles discussed in the handbook and include some valuable "lessons learned". This book includes some of the lastest thinking on communication audits in organizations. Only one drawback that may be noticable to an American audience - both authors are native to the "queen's English" and some of the wording may sound very British especially when trying to "translate" for a typical American organization. It's important to keep in mind that some wording may need to be slightly adjusted for the American business reader.

This book is the best!.......1999-12-25
This book is the best, state of the art, tool that will guide you to find your life's work and how to create it. Deborah Knox is one of the rarest and finest career counselors today. She has translated her belief that we all have a purpose here into a functional map for realizing our dreams. This book is a rare opportunity to be guided by a master toward creating our personal vision.
A Career Builder for the 2000's.......1999-12-17
I have started to keep Life Work Transitions.Com close at hand. There's so much good stuff here that I keep going back for more; turning over in my head what I've read; and looking forward to sections that I have not gotten to - yet.
Whether you're in the midst of a transition or trying to make sense of the constantly changing world of work and how you fit in, this book has the breadth and the depth to help you tackle the job. I like the tie-in to the Web site; but I like even more the balanced perspective that the two authors bring to the table. The book is both high tech and high touch, which in this "fast company" world of ours, we all need. This is a keeper.

Book Description
Spring, 1975,
nine people met for the first time at Sugar Loaf Conference Center in Philadelphia to discuss the relationship between literature and medicine. These humanists were committed to meet four more times during the next eighteen months. Contained in this book is the fruit of these discussions in the form of a dialogue—a dialogue interspersed with lyric statements in prose and poetry.
Participants in the dialogue: Nancy C. Andreasen, perhaps the “world’s only M.D./Ph.D. in literature,” who has evolved from critic and composition teacher to psychiatrist at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. James C. Cowan, University of Arkansas, is editor of the D. H. Lawrence Review and a frequently published Lawrence scholar. Ian R. Lawson, who got his medical training in Scotland, practiced there and in India before serving as Director of the Hebrew Home for the Aged and as a faculty member at the University of Connecticut.
Denise Levertov, a nurse in England before coming to the United States, is a major poet whose work is closely associated with the late poet/physician, William Carlos Williams. Harold Gene Moss is currently on the staff of the National Endowment for the Humanities: “From the patient’s point of view,” he notes, “the situation of serious illness is essentially tragic, but from the doctor’s sequential point of view, it is comedic.” William B. Ober, Director of Laboratories, Hackensack Hospital, is the author of Boswell’s Clap and Other Essays: Medical Analyses of Literary Men’s Afflictions (Southern Illinois University Press, 1979).
Richard Selzer, New Haven surgeon, essayist, and short-story writer, came to the dialogue with one book behind him, the second—in which a surgeon is celebrated—just ahead.

From the publisher's description.......2005-11-17
FROM THE JACKET FLAP:
Throughout history there has been no greater adventure than that represented by man's quest for knowledge of his world. Now in one wide-ranging volume, Isaac Asimov tells the exciting stoy of how people have learned and continue to learn about their world--from the great migrations of prehistory to the space probes of today to the barely dreamed-of journeys of tomorrow.
Asimov ranges across the entire panorama of science, covering in twenty-three mind-expanding chapters discoveries in astronomy, biology, geography, mathematics, geology, and physics. He tells us about the explorations, discoveries, and inventions that have transformed our view of the world and the scientific theory and scientific speculation that have expanded our vision yet further.
Within the four spheres of the physical universe--the horizons of space, time, matter, and energy--Asimov reveals how man's urge to expand the limits of knowledge has led him to leave the perimeters of the known world, to develop theories and devices that would allow him to plumb the secrets of the earth and the universe.
'Exploring the Earth and the Cosmos' tells hundreds of fascinating stories:
-how ten fingers and twelve number names evolved into today's varied, intricate, and often complicated number systems
-how smoke from a house fire inspired the first hot-air balloon and man's early journeys above the earth
-the growth of man's concept of time and the methods he devised to measure it
-the discovery of the strange, eventful world inside the atom
-the emergence of speculations about time travel
Here for the first time in one breathtaking, sweeping history are the facts, dates, names, and figures that are the story of man's movement out into the world and the universe beyond.

Customer Reviews:
Hooray for leaving the "Stay within the Line" mentality!.......2002-03-22
I would buy every young person I know this book if it were available. Creating and exploring in a young person is stiffled around age 6. I hear people say "I can't draw a straight line," or "I can't draw," or "I can't paint," and too bad their brain accepted teachers/parents lack of encouragement to color anything, draw anything, go beyond the lines. The Anti-Coloring Book of Exploring Space on Earth by Susan Striker should be given to every school child. The pictures are started, and the child/person is encouraged to complete from with descriptions like, "Would you like to live on a houseboat?", "Build a Treehouse where you can go and be alone," "Decorate this Dollhouse," "The people who live in this apartment have commissioned you to paint a modern masterpiece." "You are a scientist who has established a model community for life under the sea."
An exciting alternative to passive, mindless "art."
