    Book Description

The eight-step strategy presented in this book takes the mystery out of writing effective training courses. Practical templates, checklists, assessments, and examples streamline your effort and eliminate writer's block. You'll discover how to make the most of limited time, money, and human resources to:

—Develop training lessons that make a difference.
—Customize off-the-shelf training to meet the needs of your target audience.
    —Repurpose existing documentation.
—Globalize your training for culturally diverse learners or tailor lessons to meet specific needs of a limited audience.
—Recognize dead-end paths that can undermine the success of your project.
—Incorporate ready-to-use CGI, Java, and HTML scripts into lessons. Learn when to use them, where to find download sites, and how to tailor them to your training objectives and learners.

This systematic approach has helped thousands of writers like you create training programs that deliver what they promise. In just hours, you can learn techniques and time-savers that others have learned only through hard-won experience and costly mistakes.

Keep this book handy. You'll reach for it often for real-world advice about every phase of your project from initial planning to troubleshooting. Better than a mentor, it's a must-have for every successful training or user-education professional.

4 out of 5 stars Good for content planning, not for content writing.......2006-11-21

This is one of the best books of those that help you determine what should be included in your training course - to plan objectives and then break it down into the detail. It also covers how to test the effectiveness of the course. However, it does not give any information at all about what a course module should contain or how to write it.

My goal was to write a training course for a software program. So, for the most part I knew what the outline of the course should be. I needed to know how to introduce the subject, how much to include in the single module, what exactly to do and say. For this, the book would get a zero.

Very good for it's purpose but I felt a review was needed to point out what that was.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific for Planning from the Ground Up!.......2004-04-22

I just can't say enough about this book. I am developing a training program for the first time and it has added outstanding depth to my process. It is simple to use. If you go step by step everything just seems to fall in to place.

    It is a life saver!

    5 out of 5 stars Very applicable.......2002-04-04

I read this book in 5 hours. After that, I had all the tools I needed to start developing a training course for a subject matter I still knew little about. Great book for someone who has a short time to develop a training course. Great reference for anyone who needs new approaches to their training development.

5 out of 5 stars Learning to teach online.......2007-03-08

I am a college professor migrating into the "new" world of teaching online. If I had to recommend a book for "How To" this is it. A must read for anyone attempting to go there!

5 out of 5 stars This one covers all of the bases........2003-11-16

This is a comprehensive, easy-read that brings every aspect of online curriculum development into focus before it marches into the details of practical, successful class management. Through it all, Lynnette's constant thread is defining the role of the teacher in creating an online community that works. She is an excellent guide. Whether your target is an online class or a curriculum, read this one. For the technically challenged, it covers all the tools. For the technology-savy, it draws attention to the human element. Even if you're already involved with online education, you'll find fresh ideas here.

      Book Description

This book explores the basic principles and processes underlying the design and development of effective instructional materials for all types of media, ranging from print to hypermedia applications such as the Web. "Self-Directed" or "Self-Instructional" learning takes place when individuals work with instructional materials without direct supervision or guidance from an instructor. This book's purpose is to provide instructional designers and media developers an opportunity to consider ways and means to encourage truly self-directed learning. Five chapters are titled Introduction; Expository Self Instruction: The Good Tutorial; Inquiry-Based Self-Instruction; Issues in Self-Instruction and Self-Directed Learning; Self-Directed Learning: A Final Look. For anyone interested in curriculum development or developing educational technology.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Reflective, Useful Foundations and Tools.......2003-04-18

Of interest to course designers, educational technology developers and those responsible for self directed learning ( including individuals), "Designs for Self-Instruction" offers a reference guide to help you ground projects with solid theory & practice.

The well referenced, somewhat dry and simply illustrated chapters span:
      - situation, principles, content of self instruction
      - programmed instruction, implied contract, content, plan
      - development
      - motivation, styles
      - collaborative settings

It could be improved with more examples of tools from software world (demo or websites?) and a broader context (not just educational research but also corporate training, consultants, eLearning, virtual universities). Despite that, worthwhile and useful.

5 out of 5 stars A thoughful and valuable guide for professional developers.......1999-06-20

Designs for Self-Instruction provides instructional designers and developers with a comprehensive and thoughtful examination of self-instruction. From its theoretical underpinings to practical suggestions for execution, this book transcends any single medium, while applying to all. Its focus is steadfastly and purely instruction - not job support or job aids; not web design or web mastery; not anything more or less than the tenets and philosophies touching specifically on self-instruction.

The author writes in an accessible style, yet with authority and wisdom. For many reasons, this small volume is an invaluable addition to any professional designer's library.

          Book Description

Since it was first published almost twenty years ago, Developing Technical Training has been a reliable resource for both new and seasoned training specialists. The third edition of this classic book outlines a systematic approach called the Instructional Systems Design (ISD) process that shows how to teach technical content defined as facts, concepts, processes, procedures, and principles. Whether you teach “hard” or “soft” skills, or design lessons for workbooks or computers, you will find the best training methods in this book. Using these techniques, you can create learning environments that will lead to the most efficient and effective acquisition of new knowledge and skills. Throughout the book, Clark defines each content type and illustrates how to implement the best instructional methods for delivery in either print or e-learning media.

From the supplier: A innovative approach to the accounting curriculum of colleges and universities is helping teams of accounting students gain a knowledge of accounting problems encountered in actual companies. Formed in the Accounting Information Systems class, which stresses curricular goals of knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation, the 'shadow education systems' involve three-student teams visiting a company, observing, evaluating and in some cases recommending changes in accounting procedures. In the win-win scenario, corporations are able to streamline the skills of future job applicants by giving them a knowledge of real world operational matters, and students are able to augment their academic education with working world experience.

From the supplier: The University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) utilizes three organizations to successfully provide computer-integrated instruction (CII). CII refers to instruction that employs computer technology as the development or delivery medium and that may integrate other media, including CD-ROM and videodisc. The Office of the Provost furthers CII through such activities as developing specialized departmental computing facilities. Instructional Development actively creates courseware across a range of academic disciplines. The Microcomputer Laboratory (MCL) receives its core funding from the state instructional computing fund as well as supplementary support from the College of Letters and Sciences and the College of Engineering. The MCL provides instructional computing to students in seven laboratories. The lab plans to support such areas as scientific and symbolic computing, MIDI, computer-assisted instruction (CAI), CAD/CAM, and videodisc technology. Moreover, all three units work towards improving instruction through computing, although each is a distinct entity.

                                        Book Description

The possibility of life on other worlds has long been the subject of endless speculation - and more and more, of scientific research. Our improving knowledge of the processes that might lead to the creation of life elsewhere is matched by the greater sophistication of our searches for some sign of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.SETI - the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence is undergoing something of a re-birth, and alongside the work of the scientists almost a million PC users round the world are participating in the SERENDIP IV project through the "SETI at Home" initiative from Berkeley University in California.Life on Other Worlds and How to Find It is an up-to-date review of today's scientific thinking about where and how we might find life elsewhere in the universe, presented in Stuart Clark's easily read yet authoritative style.
