Book Description
This report investigates the presentation and analysis of financial information in 41 UK Manufacturing companies. Traditional and contemporary accounting techniques are exemplified in the case studies. With old and new techniques explored, the research shows that there is little that is new in management accounting theory and practice. The study concludes that there is not one set of practices which all should follow.
·Cima research report - reveals methods currently used for reporting financial information in UK manufacturing companies.
·Based on 41 companies, it shows a rich diversity of reporting practices that are constrained neither by the financial accounting requirements of SSAP9 nor by any sense of general management accounting trends.
·Financial Directors choose from a toolkit of traditional' and contemporary' practices in constructing reporting systems appropriate to their varied commercial needs, but with a strong leaning towards contribution margin approaches.

Retirement expert John Howells provides seniors with the information they need to retire comfortably. This guide includes information on topics such as affordable housing, medical care, availability and quality of senior services, recreational and cultural opportunities for retirees, and the best retirement locations in the United States and abroad.

Full of great information.......2007-04-22
Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (3/07)
When we think of retirement we think of being rewarded for all those years of loyalty and hard work. We call our senior years "The Golden Years." But the years aren't golden for everyone; we question whether social security will still be there for us. Have we saved enough? What about inflation? Can we continue to live in the lifestyle we've become accustomed to? What about life insurance and health care? Many will have a lower income once they retire.
The information contained in "Retirement on a Budget" is presented in a simple, straightforward manner. You don't have to have an accounting degree to understand what the author is explaining. Among other things, John Howells discusses budgeting and presents an example of a bare-bones budget for the reader to study. He offers suggestions on how you can save money on common expenses: clothing, groceries, transportation, etc. He discusses relocating to a community that is lower-cost or looking for a lower cost area in the community you live in now.
One of the key issues John Howells discusses is being single and retirement. Most "retirement ads focus on couples," but "what happens if your spouse dies unexpectedly?" "What about the homemaker who spends her productive years raising a family only to find herself divorced once the children are on their own?"
I've always thought the idea of living on the road in an RV to be both romantic and adventurous. Howells addresses this option in a logical manner. After reading the chapter "RVS and Retirement," I know I'd love it but my husband would hate it.
"Retirement on a Budget" by John Howells is a must read for all of us facing retirement. Rather than going into this new period of our life with dreams we need to face it with reality also. The reality is that we will need a budget, we will need activities, and we will need planning. While my husband and I together will not have to relocate, I know that if I were to lose him I would have to. Mr. Howells has given me much to think about. Thank you Mr. Howells! I highly recommend this book to those looking to retire in the next fifteen years. You can never plan to early.

Sage Advice for Shoestring Retirement.......2007-03-01
This informative book contains invaluable advice on retirement options for those with cash-flow worries. Speaking to folks like me, Howells knows just what the hot buttons are, and how to address them. I found helpful information in every chapter. Howells does not waste any time getting to the heart of retirement issues for limited income folks who rarely receive any due in most publications. Not all retirees have investment income and golden parachutes! Highly recommended reading!
Another enjoyable and helpful read from Mr. Howells.......2005-08-22
I'm not looking to retire anytime soon (I'm 50) but really enjoyed this particular book, as it's given me much to think about. I like his down-to-earth approach (he and his wife have boldly RV'd all over the place, including down into Mexico, so he knows firsthand what day-to-day life is for the average (?) retiree). Again, a very enjoyable read.
Great Overview on Retirement.......1999-05-29
Retirement on a Shoestring has sections that really add to what I have read on retirement. I especially like the chapters on College Towns in retirement, RVs and Retirement, and Mobile Homes and Retirement. The book is easy to read, and it is full of great statistics, tips and insights. This is a fine book for someone contemplating retirement. It makes one feel that success in retirement is just around the corner.
An excellent retiree's bible filled with practical info........1998-10-10
Unlike most retirement guides which offer zero useful information, "Shoestring" offers practical information for the majority of Americans who are not filthy rich, and are coming up on depleted Social Security, rising housing and rental costs and non-existent medical care.Howells offers real strategies to live on reduced incomes. I recommend it. A+, John.

Dovetails Well with My Own Investment Philosophy.......2006-04-10
This book presents a sensible, do-able, common sense plan for financial well-being. La Plante reminds the reader that it is really not how much money you have; rather, it is how well you use what you have that makes the difference.
The book consists of eight chapters (not including a very well written introduction), with the first four laying the foundation for financial well-being and the last four giving detailed explanations of the various financial vehicles available to individuals for investment. All of the important aspects of financial planning are very well covered, and La Plante introduces most of the investment vehicles available to the individual investor. The book also contains a glossary of key investment terms and a listing of sources for further information on various financial and investment topics.
La Plante tries very hard to be all-inclusive from the standpoint of reading audience, and she does this by introducing four fictional types of people, two individuals and two couples, each with different lifestyles and financial circumstances (single male, single working mom, thirty-something couple with a toddler and an older couple just embarking on retirement). Each chapter begins with a listing of topics the reader will encounter, and ends with a detailed summary of the major points of the chapter (these features will immensely aid the time pressed). Each chapter also includes a healthy dose of informative advice and tidbits on how to get the most out of Wall Street, which La Plante calls Wall Street Wisdom.
While most of the information presented was not new to me, I do agree with the author's approach to financial well-being, which I feel is appropriate for most everyone at any age. I especially liked her treatment of mutual funds, dividend reinvestment plans, and most of all, investment clubs. All of these vehicles allow the small investor to participate for modest sums of money. I found La Plante's take on investment clubs to be very enlightening, for although she does advocate them as $5 a day investment vehicles, she strongly encourages the reader to look upon investment clubs more as a source of information and a clearinghouse for investing and financial ideas and less as an investment vehicle.
Although the book is far from new, and most likely is out of print, it is hands down better than most of the books available on the market that deal with personal finance. Moreover, though the entire book is full of good, useful advice, the first chapter alone would more than pay for the book. Interested readers should use this book to glean some insights into achieving financial well-being.
Wonderful book full of great common-sense advice.......1999-06-05
Ms. La Plante has taken a complex subject and explained it in such a simple and concise way. And she has included wonderful, common-sense advice. The first two chapters alone were worth the price. What a great concept, too. Most of us would never miss the $5.00 a day! Highly recommended!
Why should Warren Buffett have all the fun and success?.......1998-10-23
Why should Warren Buffett have all the fun and success? This book shows that you don't need to be a millionaire to make money on Wall Street (though it does still help). A nice, step-by-step guide to investment options for us ordinary souls.
Highly recommended. Smart, well-written, very accessible........1998-10-03
An excellent and impressive treatment of a complex subject. With all the hype about investing in the stock market (and with recent the market swings up and down) it's great to have a basic primer that lays everything out in clear and easily understood language. I'm buying this book for my elderly mother, for friends who have wanted to try investing but have been afraid, and anyone intimidated by the jargon spewed by the financial media, which assumes a level of knowledge and experience beyond the typical American consumer.
FINALLY, a book for now-small, future-big investors!.......1998-09-15
Clare's crystal-clear writing style helps the novice investor make sense of it all. A way to START NOW, with pocket change. Great book!

Book Description
What would the world be like if a mutant gene had not passed on hemophilia to the progeny of England's Queen Victoria? How would the world be different if Cesare Borgia had not been plagued by syphilis? Would the art of poetry have been different if tuberculosis had not snuffed the young life of John Keats? Could additional discoveries have been made in the worlds of chemistry and physics if leukemia had not taken the life of one of the greatest scientists of modern history, Marie Curie?
The lives of many individuals have been touched over the history of the world by many diseases--smallpox, the Black Death, giantism, scurvy--but when these illnesses take the lives of great thinkers or leaders of nations, one cannot help but wonder how the world around us would be different today if it were not for the cold touch of the Reaper.
Profiles in Medical History: Volume I is a detailed, historically accurate, and extremely entertaining set of vignettes by author Glen M. Bruss which explores how some of the major diseases of antiquity through the present day have affected the lives of the people living in those times and impacted the world by the taking of certain renowned figures. The diseases themselves are explained, as well as how, if possible, they were brought under control.
Customer Reviews:
The Book is entertaining! Easy to Read!.......1998-11-09
Mr. Bruss, a california licensed clinical laboratory scientist, has authored a 10 page, 10 chapter paperback book about ten important historical figures and their medical histories. In each chapter, the historical significance of the person is followed by; a discription of the symptoms, historic and current prognostic information, related roles for laboratory testing, and comments about possible future significance of the disorder. The book is an entertaining "easy read". If the reader enjoys history and clinical laboratory science, the $12 price is "good value for the money". An expanded version could be a fine text for a general education college course related to history and medicine.
For a physician, it's thrilling! What fun! Encore!.......1998-05-24
"What fun! The 'Chicago Hope' of history. For a physician, this is not just good, it's thrilling! Beginning with imperishable truth, leavening with today's knowledge gives an engaging view of the action of disease in history. Encore! J.Joseph Prendergast,M.D. Endocrinologist President of Endocrine Metabolic Medical Center
"Absolutely Fascinating": Dean Edell,M.D.Med.Jouranlist.......1998-05-23
"An absolutely fascinating account of how the course of history has turned on men's battles with disease. From famous and powerful individuals who fought the scourge of the past and present to mass decimation, it is the careful attention to the personalities involved that makes 'Profiles In Medical History'so rewarding to read."

Book Description
The papers contained in this volume arise from the 34th Herstmonceux conference, held in Cambridge, U.K., which addressed in particular the behavior of matter surrounding stars in the later stages of evolution. Highlights include the latest observational results that show how various types of stellar ejecta differ in shape, and a unified view of the physical processes involved; as well as the latest results on the media around Supernovae 1987a and 1993j. Other topics include late stages of evolution of low and high mass stars; physics of stellar winds; morphology of nebulae around stars; binary stars and bipolar nebulae; collimated flows and condensations; novae and supernovae revealing previous ejecta; and supernovae occurring in dense media. This timely volume will serve both as an excellent introduction for graduate students and a reference for researchers who want to keep abreast of developments in the field.
