5 out of 5 stars Polish Your People Skills.......2002-08-13

OK, I must admit that I gave it 5 stars because I wrote it, and it's one of my favorites. The book is organized into three sections: one on creating productive relationships at work, one on dealing with difficult people (which led to Solving People Problems, also published by Amacom), and the third on dealing with difficult situations. What makes this book special is that each chapter is accompanied by a first-person interview, written completely in the interviewee's words, that addresses the topic of the chapter. The interviews are great and really bring the author's (my) ideas to life. Order it quick because the publisher just told me there are no more available.

    5 out of 5 stars A user-friendly guide to positive work-place relationships........1999-03-06

Review by the author: This book is part of a series originally aimed at "office professionals," but it is appropriate for a much larger audience. Since, virtually every job requires some kind of contact with people, knowing how to create constructive relationships, on one hand, and cope with potentially destructive ones, on the other, are survival skills everyone needs. Polish Your People Skills makes them easy and fun to master.

    Book Description

Over 90% of all deaf children are born to hearing parents. For most of these mothers and fathers, their own child is the first deaf person they have ever met. Raising a child who can hear is a challenging and difficult task, but raising a deaf child can seem like an overwhelming responsibility, especially with the mass of conflicting information and advice offered by professionals and well-meaning friends and family members. In Raising and Educating a Deaf Child, Marc Marschark offers parents and teachers a readable and comprehensive summary including everything a parent would want to know about growing up deaf. Parents of a deaf child, like the parents of any child, want to know the answers to some apparently straightforward questions, such as "What kind of school will provide my child with the best education?" "What language experience is best for my child, sign or speech?" "Will my child be able to get a good job?" Marschark addresses these questions and more, with topics ranging from what it means to be deaf and the uniqueness of Deaf culture to the medical causes of early hearing loss, from technological aids for the deaf such as TTYs and cochlear implants to the educational and social opportunities available to deaf children. He describes the many ways that the environment of home and school can influence a deaf child's chances for success in both academic and social circles. Above all, he emphasizes the need for early detection of hearing loss and the importance of being able to communicate with deaf children from a very early age, recommending that all parents of deaf children learn sign language and use it often. This is not a "how to" book or one with all the "right" answers for raising a deaf child. This is a guide through the many conflicting suggestions and programs for raising deaf children, as well as the likely implications of taking one direction or the other. A leading researcher himself, Marschark makes sense of the most current educational and scientific literature, including his own recent research, and talks to deaf children, their parents, and deaf adults about what is important to them. The result is a readable and enlightening survey of what we know about the language, social, and intellectual development of deaf children, and what educational and practical issues face them and their families. Parents of deaf children can and should make their own decisions, based on what is right for their family and for their child. Armed with Raising and Educating a Deaf Child, parents will have access to the bets information available, allowing them to make informed decisions for their child.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2002-12-12

This is the book you are looking for if you are the parent of a Deaf child. Tons of good information that is based on fact and not prejudice. The only negative thing I can say is the book was designed for the educated professional type of parent and includes advanced vocabulary and smallish print. You won't find illustrations, checklists or simplified information. Very excellent material that should help parents make informed decisions rearing their Deaf child. This is the kind of information that helped me to raise my own Deaf son who is now a happy and successful adult.

5 out of 5 stars Raising and Educating A Deaf child.......2001-10-06

This is a most practical, sensitive book that is appealing for educators as well as families of deaf children. The author is renowned for his work in cognition and psychology, but demonstrates a wonderful understanding of deaf children through the eyes of an individual who seems to know their needs first hand. Any parent or teacher reading this book will get a sense of the complexities involved in raising a deaf child, but will also get a sense of hope and support for developing appropriate
guidance and nurturing. The author makes sure to speak to his audience as one among them and offers a wealth of advice regarding educational possibilities to audiological support to socio-emotional growth.

This is an unassuming book that provides light at the end of the tunnel. Honest and sincere.

3 out of 5 stars Some interesting tidbits.......2001-07-21

This book gave me some good perspective on working with my deaf students. It did gives many opinions that I disagree with in the course of my own studies.

1 out of 5 stars Shoud be titled "Why you should use ASL for your child".......2000-11-07

This book claims to be a resource on the choises for educating your deaf child. It is not. The entire book focuses on using ASL as the means of communicating with your child. That would not be bad- if it didn't present itself as an unbiased book. After it says that ASL should be used, it then makes you feel worse by saying that if you are a hearing parent with a deaf child, you probably won't become that fluent in it anyway. There aren't references either- so I am not sure where the author gets his information. It may be true, but there should footnotes on many of the claims. If you do choose to read this book, don't make it the first book you read after you find out your child is deaf. That is what I did and all it did was depress me. In truth, I haven't finished it and probably will leave it on the shelf to pick up after I finish a few others.

    Book Description

Engaging in sex, becoming parents, raising children: these are among the most personal decisions we make, and for people with mental retardation, these decisions are consistently challenged, regulated, and outlawed. This book is a comprehensive study of the American legal doctrines and social policies, past and present, that have governed procreation and parenting by persons with mental retardation. It argues persuasively that people with retardation should have legal authority to make their own decisions.

Despite the progress of the normalization movement, which has moved so many people with mental retardation into the mainstream since the 1960s, negative myths about reproduction and child rearing among this population persist. Martha Field and Valerie Sanchez trace these prejudices to the eugenics movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They show how misperceptions have led to inconsistent and discriminatory outcomes when third parties seek to make birth control or parenting decisions for people with mental retardation. They also explore the effect of these decisions on those they purport to protect. Detailed, thorough, and just, their book is a sustained argument for reform of the legal practices and social policies it describes.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and helpful.......2003-08-14

This book is fabulous and it is one of a kind. I found it helpful as a guardian often faced with ethical dilemmas about when I should decide and when "my ward" should. But the book is also written for doctors, policymakers, lawyers and judges, and parents -- in fact anyone interested in the assimilation of "the retarded" into the rest of the population.
It is actually fun reading and set up so you can skip the parts less relevant to you. It made me cry a couple of times as well as giving me many ideas -- and increasing my confidence in my judgments. READ IT. It will surely affect you profoundly in one way or another.

    5 out of 5 stars Romance & Retardation.......2003-08-06

While this closely argued and exhaustively researched book focuses on the reproductive legal rights of our retarded adults, its real core is to ask: Why should retarded people be deprived of the same rights the rest of us enjoy simply because they are retarded.
The book punctures the veil of silence around our automatic presumptions about these people that underlies our assumptions of the necessity and goodness of paternalistic regulation.
It does this by honing in on the most emotionally arousing aspect of the question. Asking why our retarded fellow citizens can be prevented from having sex and from having children brings us up against our deepest prejudices.
The book caused me to reconfigure my opinions in these areas in what feels to me a more useful perspective of the lives of these people, some of whom are my patients. I think it is a must read for anyone involved in any aspect of the care of our retarded population.

5 out of 5 stars Controversial and convincing.......2000-10-15

This book puts forth a compelling thesis: The mentally retarded should have full rights to manage their own sexual and reproductive lives. The idea sounds good, but most people would quail at its full implications. Should a severely retarded 15-year-old be allowed to bear a child? What about situations where parents fear a daughter might suffer from rape in an institution? Should they have the right to have their daughter sterilized? A Harvard law professor, Field does not dodge the hard questions. She addresses them and forces a re-thinking of conventional ideas about who should make decisions for others and why. Field writes with such authority and conviction that at the end you are likely to be persuaded that human rights apply to the retarded in ways you never imagined. Analytical and systematic, the book is rooted in a deep knowledge of the law and a concern for the shaping of social policy. It is a must-read for those who face decisions about the retarded, either within their families or in the public arena. Those concerned with human rights will also find their minds, and perhaps their causes, expanded when they read this book.

    Book Description

Two educators -- one of them a parent of two deaf children -- offer positive advice and encouragement on helping children adapt to deafness. Recommended in these pages is the bimodal communication approach, which entails having the child, parents, and other non-deaf family members combine sign language and speech as the first step to normal communication. The book also offers much good general advice on parenting. The authors stress that deaf and hearing children are more alike than they are different.

          Book Description

About 12% of all school children are disabled from birth defects, accidents, illnesses or other causes. This means 700 children are born each day who need special care, and the number appears to be growing. Raising a Handicapped Child offers a complete, practical, and reassuring guide for parents who care for these children. Widely acclaimed by parents and professionals since its first publication, this revised and expanded handbook is still the only one of its kind to discuss both the emotional and physical problems of raising a child with a disability. A recognized authority in her field, Dr. Charlotte Thompson anticipates and addresses the questions and difficulties parents have to face from the initial diagnosis to adulthood, sharing the survival tools she has learned in over 35 years of practice. Her practical advice includes tips on how to select educational programs, how to find the best professional help, keep up with the latest in medical treatments, and how to cope with the costs. She deals compassionately and effectively with emotional issues, too, counseling parents on how to handle sorrow, anger, and guilt resulting from a devastating diagnosis or a progressive disease. Also including comprehensive appendices, Raising a Handicapped Child will be a great source of inspiration and information for parents of children with a disability and for anyone who works with disabled children.

Should be mandatory reading for all parents even if they don't have children with disabilities. Life is hard enough when you know what you're doing. When you feel like the first person on the moon it is next to impossible. Both Dr. Thompson's books are practical guides to get us parents over the hard times. The advice is down to earth without all that doctor talk that no one really understands.
