4 out of 5 stars Financial Guidelines for Small to Medium Sized Churches.......2006-05-29

I like this book very much for several reasons. However, a key element that I would like to focus on is the section on Internal Controls. In some ways the role of a senior pastor is an impossible job. When the new pastor is suddenly responsible to hire new staff, lead a building program, fend off a lawsuit and raise funds for new programs, he may wish for his seminary days again.

Many pastors have never had even an Introduction to Business Class. They certainly never had time in their preparation to take an accounting class. No matter how intelligent or how Godly the pastor is, he is vulnerable in the area of church finances. When the church is unable to hire accountants, the business practices can be sloppy or non-existent. Many times the person who will take some responsibility from us is seen as an answer to prayer. Especially if it is in an area that we don't enjoy or don't understand very well.

In this book, Dr. Cirtin does a great job of stressing separation of duties. The young pastor could save himself much embarrassment and perhaps his pastoral career by studying, understanding and implementing this section. This book is straightforward and easy to understand. There is in this small paper back guidelines to church finances that will allow the pastor to concentrate on being a pastor. And while he is sharing truth from the Bible, his church will be practicing truth in the office.

This book is a lifeline for the small to medium sized churches that do not have the budget for an accountant or financial manager.

    Product Description

CCH's 2005 Federal Taxation: Basic Principles (21st Edition) is a popular first-level tax course that provides a clear concise explanation of the fundamental tax concepts covering both tax planning and compliance. Basic Principles strikes a perfect balance between the AICPA model curriculum (focus on business tax) and the demands favored by most teachers (cover the fundamentals and build towards the complex). The book is also a favorite in distant learning, because of its clarity and direct approach--and it is also used in special programs like CFP courses. Basic Principles covers the core tax concepts and principles, including individual taxation, gross income, deductions, credits, property transactions, accounting methods and periods, deferred compensation, retirement plans, partnerships, corporations, trusts and estates, and tax planning for individuals. It is written by an editorial board of tax teachers that includes members who are currently active in the American Accounting Association, American Taxation Association, the National Tax Challenge, CFP education, CPE lectures, CPA preparation and other programs, so you can be assured that the text is allied with real-world educational outcomes. The 2005 Edition reflects new tax legislation, recent case law and regulatory developments.

For over 30 years more electrical power professionals have used this guide for safe, economical system operation than any other in print. Why? 5 out of 5 stars Practice book.......2007-07-09

Power System Operation is an important book for people that operate grids. It could be a support for electric engineering students.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Introduction to Power System Ops.......2005-10-23

I purchased this book because it was reccommended reading for NERC certification. To pass that exam, it is enough to spend 3-5 days studying the NERC operating manual. There were no questions from either this book or the others reccommended for the exam.

With that out of the way, I thought Power System Operations covered a nice range of topics concisely and in non-technical terms. It is not comprehensive enough to be a good reference book once you become knowledgable in this area. The material is not presented with mathematical rigor. However, if you work for a utility, and are seeking a non-intimidating introduction to power system ops, this book is perfect. As a sidenote: There is also a wealth of information available on the reliability region and ISO websites that will complement this text.

4 out of 5 stars Great Little Primer for Load Dispatchers.......2003-07-09

Part of my job with a large midwestern power company is to train load dispatchers. I'm constantly on the lookout for good material. Power System Operations by Miller is one of the best textbooks I've found to train non-degreed system operators. I used the first edition myself when I was a new load dispatcher, and I found it to be a great self-study guide.

One problem with the latest (third) edition, there are no answers provided for the questions at the end of the chapter. This is no problem if the book is used in a classroom as the instructor should be able to figure them out. But for self-study it is absolutely necessary for the publisher to provide the answers to the chapter tests. Also, there are a few typos in the chapter on reactive power that could be very misleading to students who are already struggling.

The book concentrates mainly on transmission but the first four chapters are useful for distribution dispatchers as well. They provide a good foundation for teaching system overview, AC fundamentals and reactive power. The chapters on protective relaying, while still giving a basic overview of the various schemes, are a bit dated because they don't cover some of the latest microprocessor-based relays that have been replacing the electro-mechanical ones over the past several years.

This is not the be-all and end-all for training system operators, but when combined with on-the-job training and other supplementary material it can help establish a solid training program.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent developmental tool for Power System Operators.......1998-04-20

Power System Operation provides a well structured knowledge base and reference for the new and seasoned power system operator. It will serve as the foundational and theoretical basis for many of the experienced based knowledge that is passed from operator to operator. I would recommend that all power system operators be equipped with this book as must read material.

                  Book Description

This isn't just "someone's opinion"...It's the first, definitive, evidence-based guide to effective management. In The Truth About Managing People...and Nothing but the Truth, Robbins delivers principles you can rely on throughout your entire management career--regardless of your organization, role or title. This is a management book that cuts through the soft opinion and conjecture books that have dominated the business shelves in recent years and shows what management researchers know actually works, or doesn't work, when it comes to managing people.

Drawing on the author's 30+ years of research and textbook writing experience, Robbins has distilled the results of thousands of research studies on human behavior into over 60 proven "truths" that can transform how you manage people--and the results that are achieved. The author provides guidance to you organized around key, human-behavior-related problemareas that managers face (hiring, motivation, leadership, communication, team building, conflict management, job design, evaluating performance and coping with change), along with guidance to help you apply the information and improve your managerial effectiveness.

5 out of 5 stars Truthfully, This Book Will Help You Do More Than Just "Manage".......2007-08-15

Robbins's book is a pleasure to read. He presents multiple topics in a short, easily digestible modular format and then allows you to learn more by providing you with references that go into much further detail. Let's face it - most management books are worse than worthless and are either New Age fluff or bluster and swagger. Robbins instead avoids the know-it-all approach by supporting each of his 'truths' with empirical evidence from sociology, organizational psychology, assertiveness training, and literature on leadership and group dynamics.

Unless you already have a Ph.D in Social Psychology, an MBA, and 10 years' worth of corporate experience, you will learn something new with this book. You'll do more than just 'manage' - you will succeed. Use this book as a springboard and a guide, as Robbins suggests, and you will almost certainly improve your workplace performance.

4 out of 5 stars Good primer on managing.......2007-06-30

This book provides some basic information on how to manage and interact overall with people in the work place. It has helpful refresher information on group dynamics and motivation. The book is organized in 63 numbered "truths" that I thought were interesting and insightful. Each "truth" was about a page or two, so there wasn't as much detailed info on how to handle all of the situations discussed.

4 out of 5 stars Some Good Some Bad.......2006-07-09

This is a pretty good book for learning for things to look out for when managing people, but not being pro-Christian it does have some seemingly immoral suggestions, one for example is to make people dependant on you by doing things as extreme as destroying instruction booklets on how to do certain things at work, so that for someone to learn what to do they must go to you.

There is also the strange advice, "Truth 19", to not criticize the employees when they mess up but rather their messed up behavior (which seems to have something to do with the "do not judge" concept, which is often taken out of context in the Bible.) Ironically on the same page the author says to say something like this to the employee, "Bob, I'm concerned with your attitude toward your work. You were a half hour late...". Notice how the criticizing is on Bob, not his behavior?

I don't recommend this book for a newbie Christian who is a manager or who wants to be one, but for one who is solidy grounded in the Bible I wouldn't mind giving this too them. I might point out it isn't perfect in a note or something however, like the don't criticize the person contradiction, so that they don't think you're endorsing the whole book.

4 out of 5 stars A summary of diverse aspects of management thought.......2005-08-03

Mr Robbins' best-selling book is packed with briefs on effective management thinking and examples on diverse topics. An excellent, useful, and well-organized book comprised of 63 sound nuggets of management wisdom collected from many credible sources. The 10 categories make it easy to locate an item of particular interest. The small easy-to-digest `truths' make it easy to read a different truth each morning or to devour the book in one longer sitting. Each `truth' is also well documented if you'd like to explore the item in more depth. This book makes a great refresher, introduction, or point of embarkment on further research.

                            Book Description

A thorough revision that now more than ever clearly describes and illustrates the practice of community counseling by discussing the most current issues and practices for community work in the 21st century. Especially emphasized in this edition are the practices of diversity, ethics and the role of the counselor as a change agent and advocate. Focusing on how to promote change and growth, this text provides effective guidelines for planning and implementing productive community counseling programs and provides readers with a basic understanding of the role of the community counselor, the services offered by community agencies and the settings in which they are offered. The text examines four vital facets of counseling: direct community counseling, direct client services (outreach), indirect community services (influencing public policy) and indirect client services (client advocacy).

This book was enlightening to read as it greatly extended my own thinking about the many ways that I can positively impact my clients' and students' lives. The many practical examples included in each chapter motivated me to try many of the interventions described in the book in my professional practices. and guess what... they really do work...

If I had to choose one book of all the ones I read in my graduate training program... this is the one that had the most positive and lasting affect on me....

This is a must read for students in counseling, social work, and psychology. The authors do an excellent job of clearly describing the paradigm shift that is occurring in the mental health professions... I use this textbook with my studnets and they rave about it...This is a must read book!!!!! It will truly prepare your students for the challenges they face in the future.

This is the *worst* textbook I think I've ever read. I actually get angry just reading it. The message about the need for community counseling is fine, however, when that exact same message is repeated over and over and over in just slightly different ways, paragraph after paragraph for over 300 pages, without any really communication of theory or practice - well, it just makes you want to throw the book across the room.

There's GOT to be a better textbook on the market. Please take an extra five minutes and find it.

This is not a good text book. It's not even a good book book. If you're an instructor and you're thinking about using this for a class, please reconsider. It is incredibly boring, no one in my class made it through the first chapter.

                            Book Description

Community Health Psychology offers a new and different perspective for redressing the gaps in our system of care. As the number of people of color grows within the U.S. population, the authors contend that health providers must tailor themselves to a more culturally competent approach, one which addresses all members of a community they claim to serve.

Excellent book emphasizing cultural competence within our care delivery systems. Systems approach is important in addressing population based issues, diversity of groups, and the importance of difference. Important integration of health and mental health from a community and empowering perspective.

                            Book Description

This book will provide a comprehensive source of information for space specialists and others having a close interest in European space affairs. Written by an acknowledged expert and former space agency official, the work opens up a vital component of Europe's technostructure and the world's space programs. Its mass of information will serve the insider as a handy reference while its lively analysis will assist public judgment of European space efforts. The book first explores the Space Age's origins and Europe's response up to the 1970s. It then devotes its bulk to the present scene by investigating ESA, Eutelsat, Arianespace, Eumetsat, ASTRA, national agencies and other bodies. How this scene works, what has been achieved, how space technology is made and used and how policy is formed are main concerns, but of interest too are various crises, including recently Europe's man-in-space program. The book identifies challenges for the space community, business, and the EU and how they may be met.

4 out of 5 stars Highly detailed ESA history.......2002-04-24

The European Space Agency (ESA) has been officially created in 1975, included ten countries, and was the first truly international cooperative space organization.

Twenty-five years later, with fifteen members, the Agency is still the only space agency of its kind, and has been a spectacular success: a complicated mix of technology, science, commerce and politics that lead to Giotto, Ariane, SOHO, XMM or the ISS. And the future seems even brighter, since the ESA is working on ambitious projects such as Mars and Venus Express, Darwin, BepiColombo or GalileoSat.

Twenty-five years before ESA was born, cooperation between the main European nations has been attempted, eventually leading to the creation of two organizations: one for science (ESRO), the other for rockets (ELDO). ESRO did achieve some success, but ELDO failed completely with its Europa launcher.

How did such a unpromising start led to such a promising future?

This book, "A New Force At A New Frontier", starts from the beginning of it all (Sputnik), and chronologically relates what happened, why, and how it was handled. Mainly covering political and legal aspects, this book provides the space enthusiast with a highly detailed historical account.

Very precise, complete and technical (treaties and agreements are dissected almost point by point), the future reader must be aware that this text is definitly a research work done by a specialist, and not an ordinary, easy-reading book on the space program written a journalist. But learning about the politics involved is the only way to understand the ESA history.

Overall, an excellent reference that makes a good book, but for a limited readership, given its subject (ESA is not very well known, but this may change) and treatment (technical analysis of legal texts).

If you want to improve you overall knowledge of ESA, I would recommend the very interesting book from a professional anthropologist: "Launching Europe" by S. Zabusky (1995, ISBN 0691029725). In 300 pages, you will get an intimate view of the inner workings of ESA. I would also recommend the short but interesting book from two insiders (who actually helped define the highly successful "Horizon 2000" programme): "International Cooperation in Space: The Example of the European Space Agency" by R. Bonnet and V. Manno (1994, ISBN 0674458354). In just under 200 pages, this book provides the historical and political background of the agency. You can also order (for free!) the annual reports, from 1994, directly from the ESA web site.
