          Book Description

The evidence-based medicine movement has been one of the most important influences on medicine in the latter half of the 1990s. This textbook on evidence-based decision-making--basing clinical decisions on the best available evidence from systematic research--is ideal for healthcare, medical, and nurse managers. It explains how evidence-based decision making can be applied to health policy and management decisions about groups of patients and populations, rather than decisions about the treatment of individuals. Its first edition was well reviewed and highly successful, and this new edition builds upon the success of the first.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Insight on The Finer Practice of Spine Surgery.......2007-01-30

This book starts off with the premise that the reader has basic knowledge of spine disorders and relevant treatment options. From then onwards, it takes off in a rich, descriptive style touching on current controversial issues and explaining the rationale for differing treatment stances. Evidence-based opinion is presented objectively without any nuances or bias, taking into depth all sides of an issue. I do recommend it to the student preparing for his subspecialty paper, to the Fellow researching for his academic presentation and to the spine surgeon wanting to keep abreast of current issues. I would also await the next edition enthusiastically.

4 out of 5 stars Excellant companion book for practice development.......2000-04-05

This book is written in an accessible and practical format. It assumes nothing but at the same time treats the reader as an intelligent participant on the journey to understanding evidence based practice.

It is up to date and I was especially impressed with the web address it gives to ensure the reader is kept abreast of any changes since publication.

It systematically explains the need and use of 'evidence', how to find it (the search advice is comprehensive and includes details such as search terms and the best search engines aswell as web addresses) how to evaluate it and also how to act on it.

All in all this book was great, and I would reccomend it to anyone involved in evidence based healthcare practice as it will guide you through the thorniest problems.

            Book Description

This book is designed to be 1) a resource book on clinical decision support systems for informatics specialists; 2) a textbook for teachers or students in health informatics or medical informatics training programs; and 3) a comprehensive introduction for clinicians, with or without expertise in the applications of computers in medicine, who are interested in learning about current developments in computer-based diagnostic systems. In recent years, it has become obvious that other health professionals, in addition to physicians, have needs for decision support and that the issues raised in this book apply to a broad range of clinicians. The book includes chapters by nationally and internationally recognized experts on the design, evaluation and application of these systems who examine the impact of practitioner and patient use of computer-based diagnostic tools.

1 out of 5 stars How about a few visual aids.......2000-02-10

The chapter entitled Graphics-Based HDSSs uses only verbal descriptions of graph types. It is ironic that a chapter that discusses the value of different types of graphs to facilitate cognition in different types of tasks imposes the extraordinary burden of making the reader visualize those paradigms unaided and making the reader hope that he correctly understands them.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely brief discussion of many topics.......1998-06-27

This book is well written and easy to read but is much too basic. The book covers a variety of topics, but none of them in enough detail to be of assistance as a textbook in any but the most rudimentary of courses. For example, many of the major topics in healthcare decision support are discussed in less than one page.

                Book Description

Multi-agent systems are one of the most exciting research areas in Artificial Intelligence. In the last ten years there has been a growing interest in the application of agent-based systems in health care. Moreover, a growing European community of researchers interested in the application of intelligent agents in health care emerged as a result of the activities within the AgentCities.NET European network and the AgentLink III Technical Forum Group on Healthcare Applications of Intelligent Agents. And specially in R&D projects funded during the FP6. Thus, this book reports on the results achieved in this area, discuss the benefits (and drawbacks) that agent-based systems may bring to medical domains and society, and also to provide a list of the research topics that should be tackled in the near future to make the deployment of health-care agent-based systems a reality. Current topics of research include communication and co-operation betweendistributed intelligent agents to manage patient care, information agents that retrieve medical information from the Internet, and multi-agent systems that assist the doctors in the tasks of monitoring and diagnosis. A lot of methodological and technical problems are beginning to be discovered by the researchers that attempt to deploy agent-based systems in the medical area; just to name a few, there does not exist a universally accepted standard medical ontology, it is difficult to integrate new agent systems with legacy software, and these new agent-based systems should take into account rapidly changing national and international laws and regulations concerning the privacy of medical data and the security of the transaction of patient information between agents. The reader will find a comprehensive view of the field and up-to-date state-of-the-art of the research in this field in Europe.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A450653. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study evaluates the usability of a U.S. Navy Decision Support System (DSS). The DSS was developed to enhance the performance of tactical decision makers within a Navy Combat Information Center. The goals of this study were to test the DSS against usability criteria and objectives to track future redesign efforts and system improvements. The purpose of this analysis was to (1) assess the system's usability, (2) identify problems areas in the graphical user interface, (3) report trends in user feedback, and (4) provide recommendations addressing major usability issues encountered by participants. The study tested whether the DSS met the usability objectives of (a) 90% successful task completion, (b) ease of use ratings of somewhat easy or better, and (c) satisfaction ratings of somewhat satisfied or better. The DSS did not meet these usability objectives for task completion or ease or use, however the DSS did meet the usability objective for user satisfaction. All participants reported that they enjoyed working with the DSS and believed that it would be a significant step forward in information management. Based on the usability data gathered in the study, recommendations are provided to address the usability issues.

The Storming Media report number is A017514. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Scheduling of flights for a flight training squadron involves the coordination of time and resources in a dynamic environment. The generation of a daily flight schedule (DFS) requires the proper coordination of resources within established time windows, This research provides a decision support tool to assist in the generation of the DFS. Three different priority rules are investigated for determining an initial ordering of flights and a shifting bottleneck heuristic is used to establish a candidate DFS. A user interface allows a scheduler to interact with the decision support tool during the DFS generation process. Furthermore, the decision support tool provides the capability to produce a weekly schedule for short-term planning purposes as well as the entire flight training program schedule for long- term planning purposes.

                        Book Description

The impressive development of modern cosmology during the last decades is to a large extent due to its unification with elementary particle physics and quantum field theory, giving rise to the discipline of Astrofundamental Physics. The early universe is an exceptional (theoretical and experimental) laboratory in this new discipline.

This book provides an up-to-date understanding of the progress and key issues in the early universe and the cosmic microwave background, in terms of both theory and observation. The genuine interplay between large-scale structure formation and dark matter is discussed, the central focus being the cosmic microwave background. Emphasis is on the precise interrelation between fundamental physics and cosmology in these problems, both at the theoretical and experimental/observational levels, within a profound, well-defined, interdisciplinary programme.
