An Analysis of Factors that have Influenced the Evolution of Information Assurance from World War I Through Vietnam to the Present
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 142351890X |
Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A352524. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study is an exploratory historical analysis of the factors that have influenced the evolution of military Information Assurance (IA) programs from World War I to the present. Although the term IA has recently been widely used throughout the Information Resource Management field (IRM), evidence indicates that information and information systems protection mechanisms were used during every U.S. Military conflict. This research proposes to increase the body of knowledge within the information systems management field by exploring the areas related to Information Assurance (IA) and the ultimate goal of U. S. Defensive Information Warfare. I found that significant events related to the protection of information and information systems security led to certain levels of IA being explored throughout each U.S. Military conflict. The evaluation of these events provides key information that reveals a common approach to IA throughout history and supports the identification of key concepts that have influenced this evolutionary process and shaped the role of IA in current military operations, with indicators of how it may be used in the future.

A Bayesian Model to Incorporate Human Factors in Commanders' Decision Making
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 142350819X |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A402604. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In the near future, commanders and their respective staffs will interact with subordinate and opposing forces whose physical and cognitive behaviors are represented in software and simulation. This paper presents a model of the human factors and environmental variables that influence stress and risk assessment. These variables contribute to situational awareness, which is a force protection issue. Leaders integrate information from various sources. These sources range from observations, training, orders, and reports. The leaders use this knowledge with doctrine and tactics to develop an understanding of the situation. This paper describes a Bayesian network model of the variables associated with risk assessment and stress in combat scenarios. The level of situational awareness is determined by what the commander knows about the unit and the surrounding conditions. This model lends structure to the environment and enables a probabilistic interpretation of risk and stress levels. This model is applicable to various combat scenarios ranging from brief engagements to sustained operations.

The Storming Media report number is A625304. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The ongoing revolution in military affairs is transforming the nature of warfare. Modern combat systems are increasingly more effective yet more complex to operate. Nonetheless, their complexities cannot be compared to human behaviors which remain the most important factor in combat. Within Project Albert, an agent-based model called SOCRATES has been developed to enable users to explore the emergent behaviors of the agents. A deep operation scenario is developed to explore the effects of human factors on combat outcomes. Two experimental designs are used in this investigation: A Latin Hypercube and a Full-Factorial Design. Using the computing facilities at NPS, MITRE and MHPCC (Maui High Performance Computing Center), a total of 174,960 runs are made. The data suggest the existence of emergent patterns, and provide some insights into the question of how much more capable a smaller force must be in order to effectively battle a larger force. In addition, the analysis shows that the Latin Hypercube Design is able to identify the same significant factors in the scenario as are obtained by the Factorial Design, but with much fewer runs.

The Storming Media report number is A917683. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study explores important factors in battle outcomes through a statistical analysis of data from major historical battles. The data set of CDB90FT has been made available and documented by the Center for Army Analysis (CAA). The quality of the historical data is good. There are 660 battles listed in the data set containing over 140 numerical features for each battle. The earliest battle in the data Set is the Netherlands' War of Independence in 1600, while the last one is from the Israel- Lebanon War in 1982. The data set contains many interesting facts on the battles including the initial strengths, the total strengths, the number of casualties, the lengths of the front lines, terrain features, command capability of leaders, weather conditions, etc. The approach is to use the data set as the basis for an objective and scientific comprehensive analysis, seeking patterns, trends, and relationships in combat. After making campaign-wise grouping and analysis, it is found that the Force Ratio is a valid estimator of the battle outcome. In addition, the Casualty Rate has declined steadily over the past four centuries while Dispersion has increased.

A Specific Network Link and Path Likelihood Prediction Tool

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A481523. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Communications have always been a crucial part of any military operation. As the pace of warfare and the technological complexity of weaponry have increased, so has the need for rapid information to assess battlefield conditions. Message passing across a network of communication nodes allowed commanders to communicate with their forces. It is clear that an accurate prediction of communication usage through a network will provide commanders with useful intelligence of friendly and unfriendly activities. Providing a specific network link and path likelihood prediction tool gives strategic military commanders additional intelligence information and enables them to manage their limited resources more efficiently. In this study, Dijkstra's algorithm has been modified to allow the Queueing Network Analyzer's (QNA) analysis output to act as a node's goodness metric. QNA's calculation of the expected Total Sojourn Time for the completion of queueing and service in a node provides accurate measurement of expected congestion. The modified Dijkstra's algorithm in the Generalized Network Analyzer (GNA) is verified and empirically validated to properly deliver traffic. It appropriately generates the fastest traffic path from a start node to a destination node. This implementation includes notification if input parameters exceed the network's processing capability. GNA's Congestion Control displays notification and informs the user certain network input parameters must be lowered (PTR or BSTR) or where certain nodes must be improved to maintain node stability.

Sample Story Summaries: #1 Aug 1993 Stowaway On their way back to class from Dax's lab, Jake and Nog detour through the cargo holds and accidentally release a green mold. Renowned xenoarcheologist, Dr. Wembley, aboard a visiting Federation starship, asks DS9 to store some artifacts from the Gamma quadrant for transport to Earth. O'Brien takes the artifacts to the cargo bay and is nearly overcome by the rapidly reproducing mold, which also produces a toxic gas. While Odo and his staff try to evacuate contaminated areas, Bashir must figure out what the mold is and how to destroy it. #3 Oct 1993 Old wounds Gul Trelar, born on Bajor, once known as "The Butcher of Bajor", and now an old man, arrives at DS9 to acknowledge his approaching death. Travelling with Trelar are his children and second wife, a Bajoran who was once his prisoner. At his own request, Trelar stays in one of Quark's holosuites, so that his mother and childhood home can be simulated. At dinner with DS9 officers, Trelar collapses, Bashir administers medication, and he is left alone in the holosuite to rest. The following morning, Trelar is found stabbed to death, and there is no record of anyone entering the holosuite. Nearly everyone is a suspect. Odo uses his shapeshifting skills to conduct an investigation. #4 Nov 1993 Emancipation While collecting biological samples in the Gamma quadrant, Dax and Bashir encounter an alien vessel carrying refugees in need of medical assistance. Once they arrive at DS9, it becomes apparent that the refugees are slaves, fleeing their owners. Rogon, a representative of the Chiaran people, arrives at DS9 to reclaim the runaway slaves. The DS9 crew stalls while Sisko tries to come up with a valid reason to offer asylum to the slaves.

Europe's Final Frontier: The Search for Security Through Space

Book Description
Throughout history, military commanders have sought to exploit the high ground. Whether to engage in reconnaissance, to facilitate better lines of communication, or simply to provide a better location form which to launch an assault, the high ground is militarily important. Today, the ultimate 'high ground' is space. The impact of space based assets and their ability to perform is now widely accepted. It is now 40 years since the dawn of the space age with the successful launch by the Soviet Union of the Sputnik 1 satellite. Even in 1957 the space programs of both superpowers - the only active space participants at that time - were firmly under the auspices of the military. Today, of course, the situation is rather different, with a multitude of countries involved in civil space activity. Yet the military significance of space is now greater than ever before. Today space is utilized by all the major military powers for a wide range of purposes, including surveillance, reconnaissance, navigation and communications to name but four. The 1990's have thus developed into the decade which, from an operational military perspective, has seen space become Europe's final frontier. This book serves two purposes: While focusing on the specific field of military space activity as a distinct issue area, it also traces the development, growth and re-emergence of the Western European Union (WEU) as a European security organization, all the while placing both of these within the broad framework of European security in general.

The Final Frontier: The Rise and Fall of the American Rocket State (Haymarket Series)
Dale Carter Manufacturer: Verso Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0860911926 |
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant effort in joining litcrit and history.......2000-08-02
One of the reasons that "Gravity's Rainbow" is such an extraordinary book is Pynchon's remarkable insight into the links between what was to become during the 50s and 60s the US military-industrial complex (exemplified in the book by characters such as Clayton "Bloody" Chiclitz) and the Nazi rocket programme. Pynchon's historical imagination is more vivid and sensitive than any other living American novelist, and GR is the book in which all his gifts spectacularly coalesce. Carter takes the ball and runs with it, showing with admirable concision and clarity how US fears of global subordination during the post-war period expressed themselves in both popular culture (the sudden explosion in UFO sightings post-1947, the amazing growth of science fiction, the baby boom and industrial slump) and in government policy. He carries the rise of what he calls the Rocket State up until the Challenger disaster of 1986. At the time, the loss of the Challenger (and its token Ordinary-Person-as-Crewmember, the schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe) provoked a resurgence in public support for the space program. But in the 14 years since then (and in the 12 since this book was published), it's become fairly clear that the space program has perhaps permanently lost its old appeal for the mass of the American public. Economic recession and domestic problems can no longer be brushed aside with the promise of a new life in space (even Homer Simpson at his lowest ebb dreamt of living under the sea, rather than on Mars.)
The rocket may or may not be permanently tarnished, but Carter's book is an excellent exposition of the factors that helped to reinforce and preserve its appeal. It's also one of the very few essential books about Pynchon's novel, which tends to attract the attention of slow-witted deconstructionists rather than clued-up materialist historians.
The only tiny quibble I have is that Carter is apparently blind to one of the most pervasive features of GR - its relentless sense of humour. While it's true that Pynchon analyses with great acuity the forces in industry and government that converged on the rocket program, he does so with such irrepressible mischief that the reader is left in severe doubt of what to think. But that's a subject for another book.
The US space program has stalled since the late 80s, plagued by cost-cutting and media neglect. It's hard to see how Carter's book could be usefully revised when so little of major significance has happened in the meantime, unless he were to turn his attention to the new paranoia of alien abduction syndrome and its putative links to advanced aviation technology (and if anyone could do it, it's him - if he hasn't done it already). But it's of great interest both to Pynchon fans and those interested in linking up the forces at work in post-war US history. (Which, the US being as powerful as it is, includes most of the rest of the world.)
