Customer Reviews:
More than just another training book.......2000-02-04
I found "Performance-Based Instruction: Linking Training to Business Results" to be an excellent manual and reference. It provides processes and tools for improving employee performance in a way that connects training to the company's short- and long-term goals. This impact orientation is increasingly important as many organizations realize that training is a substantial capital investment of not only instructors and materials but also of trainee's salary and lost opportunity cost. As a consequence, training and development professionals who can demonstrate how their work contributes to overall organizational performance will have the edge in today's highly competitive and crowded training and development sector.
Performance-based instruction (or PBI for short) enables trainers to provide effective and efficient training that is linked to the learners' real job. Instead of working on generic exercises, trainees create tools and job aids that they can immediately use on their job. Instructional designers, trainers, and human performance consultants can apply PBI to on-the-job training, teamwork, feedback, job aids, personal development plans, and any other instructional context, including the conversion of traditional training to performance-based instruction. Evaluation is built into the design, it does not happen as an afterthought. This is important because continuous evaluation is needed for training professionals to stay on track throughout the design and implementation of complex or large training projects.
Performance-based instruction typically occurs in short sessions over a period of time so that trainees can practice the new material on their job. When distributed practice is not possible, PBI principles help to develop short training sessions that connect the training event to on-the-job performance in meaningful and immediately applicable ways.
This book contains exercises that help novices and experienced trainers to apply performance-based instruction from the get-go. A diskette with files of the highly useful tables and checklists allows readers to get a quick start. Overall, the book is an important resource for those performance professionals who want to improve performance where it really matters-on the job and not just the classroom. (For a detailed review see "Performance Improvement," 1999, Vol. 38 No. 9, pages 42-46.)

Movilizing, Activiating and Connecting Individuals around the world! .......2007-10-01
The book is vital because it brings personal experience of a man that has put a side his old mental models and traditions in order to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. The book is not written in systematic style, but rather in a pragmatic way.
The author does a good job of engaging his readers. He develops a framework to describe the importance of focusing on a particular "people group" for the purpose of establishing true relationship, which in turn will produce transformation from the inside out.
Glocalization offers an exciting opportunity for those churches and individuals who are seeking a different approach in touching others people's life through relationship, respect and acceptance to impact this changing world for Christ.
Cutting edge missiology.......2007-08-27
I truly enjoyed this book. It is not a typical "how to" missions book that merely confirms what probably you are already doing in your church. Bob Roberts pushes the boundaries. His perspective and approach to short-term missions is different from anything that I have ever read. From cover to cover, I felt as if my missiological practises and leadership as a pastor were being tested and refined.
A Church Which You Must Understand.......2007-06-08
There is only a handful of people whose life demands a read and careful study. Bob Roberts is one of those persons. What his church has done is unique. It is one of the few churches in the United States that has taken cultural transformation global while maintaining an Evangelical message. This book reveals the heart of such a pastor and presents many practical points of application.
I'm puzzled by the critical review of Isaiah. He's disappointed by a local church only adopting a few locations? Bob teaches that churches need to learn to specialize, pick a city or country and develop a relationship-better, a friendship, and encourage another church to do the same thing. To try to everything is to do nothing.
Isaiah's opening line, "If you believe you can just tell people about Jesus without caring for their physical needs, you may want to read this book." suggests he hasn't read the book very well. The book is all about cultural impact which is completely about ministry to the whole person.
It is especially disappointing to see a reviewer use pejorative terms--"self indulgent" does not describe this book or Bob Roberts.
Obviously there is a vital issue at stake. Read the book.
I rate the book with 4 stars, because I would like for it to be a little more systematic in its approach. While not being a systematic treatise, it is the heartfelt cry of a pastor who is doing something very significant and inviting many others to go along on the journey. As I think about it, perhaps the lack of system is a plus in a post-modern world. I guess my professorial habits have found me out.
Nothing new.......2007-04-07
If you believe you can just tell people about Jesus without caring for their physical needs, you may want to read this book. If you have always believed that you have to address a culture, society, and the whole person instead of just telling someone about Jesus, you may want to skip this book.
The first quarter of the book is reiterating Friedman's assertions that the world has gone global. (This seems to be a surprise for people over the age of forty.) He jumps from this idea of globalization to his word "glocalization" as the response of the church. He uses the words "glocal" and "glocalization" like it's going out of style. (Or maybe more appropriately, trying to move it into style.) It seems a bit pretentious and self indulgent.
The thrust of this book is centered around what he and his church is doing in a couple of places over seas. It's about the social development that is taking place in closed areas. These are all very commendable things.
The high point of the book is in discussing interfaith dialog and respect. He has some good things to say about interacting with other faiths by walking in the "front door." Some circles should take note of this method.
There's one chapter where something like 22 of 24 quotes are from Stanley Jones. It would be easier if you just skipped the chapter and read Jones rather than read the filtered version. If you've read Thomas Friedman (The World Is Flat [Updated and Expanded]: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century), Dallas Willard (The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life In God), and Stanley Jones (Mahatma Ghandi. An Interpretation.)--then you've read this book and you'll want to pass. And if you haven't read those authors, you may want to read them instead.
5 Stars +++++++++++.......2007-03-07
And I thought Transformation was great. . .Glocalization Rocks! I won't be going back to Asia until late summer. This book has put me on pins and needles. I would jump on an airplane today if I could.
Go Bob! To my knowledge, no one has ever written a book quite like this. I closed the last chapter pumped and ready to go serve in our Asian country again, and yet I also felt a profound sadness at the fact that the thoughts inside this book are so foreign to the majority of Believers. I definitely plan to do my part in sharing this book with many.
Bob, I love it that you are a practitioner first and an author on the side. That alone is one of the things that makes your book so profound.
Book Description
This easy-to-read book is the best all-round introduction to homeopathy available. Dr. Dooley intersperses stories from his twenty years of training and experience as he explains what homeopathy is, how it differs, when to use it, what to expect, how to get results, and what is needed for success in treatment. Highly recommended by homeopathic practitioners.
The second edition includes updated resources and research sections.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent yet brief description of homeopathy.......2007-09-22
This is one of the most concise and yet thorough and easy to understand explanations of what homeopathic medicine is on the market. I highly recommend anyone considering homeopathic care to read this book before they start. If you are at all curious about this unique form of healthcare called homeopathy, read the book!
best intro to classical homeopathy.......2007-09-17
My homeopathist recommended reading this book before my first visit. My experience was so successful that I ordered several more books to lend to family, friends, and acquaintances who show an interest in homeopathy. This book really prepares you to get the most out of the homeopathic interview and cooperate with the healing process.
I thought homeopaths were quacks........2007-07-12
I was never seriously ill during most of my life, but a stubborn case of no-external-trigger urticaria (hives) has been plaguing me for nearly a year. I've visited one regular doctor, one osteopath, two emergency room docs, three allergists, and three acupuncturists. They were all unable to cure the hives, but the allergists finally brought my symptoms under control with a powerful hellbroth of prescription drugs:
1 Prednisone (steroid, immunosuppressant) 20mg pill in the morning
1 Tagamet (Cimetidine, H2 antihistamine) 300mg pill in the morning
1 Allegra (Fexofenadine, H1 antihistamine) 180mg pill in the morning
1 Zyrtec (Cetirizine HCl, H1 antihistamine) 10mg pill in the afternoon
1 Atarax (Hydroxyzine HCl, H1 antihistamine) 25mg pill at bedtime
3 Doxepin (antidepressant, sedative) 10mg pills at bedtime
1 Tagamet 300mg pill at bedtime
1 Prednisone 20mg pill at bedtime
Plus, I had to carry an emergency epinephrine (adrenaline) syringe everywhere, just in case my precariously-balanced immune system tipped into anaphylactic shock.
One of the allergists provided me with a light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel newsflash: "These cases usually burn themselves out in three to five years."
But if you take Prednisone for a long time, you tend to gain a lot of weight, and your immune response is slowly crippled. The allergists tried to cut down the Prednisone gradually, but my hives always returned with a vengeance. [A minor bout with urticaria is much like being flayed alive... and after experiencing several full-blown major attacks, I wouldn't wish one on my worst enemy.] I was clinically depressed, and marginally suicidal.
My doctors thought I was doing great, considering.
Since the AMA and TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) practitioners couldn't really help, I turned to homeopaths as a last resort. Even though I had always viewed homeopathy as a marginal--if not totally quack--science, I was at the end of my rope and desperate enough to try anything.
After a few homeopathic treatments, my drug regimen is now down to:
1 Prednisone 2.5mg pill (1/16 of my previous daily intake) in the afternoon
1 Benadryl 25mg pill (over-the-counter antihistamine) at bedtime
These doctors are determined to wean me off drugs completely, God bless 'em. Needless to say, I now highly recommend homeopaths. And they recommended that I read Homeopathy: Beyond Flat Earth Medicine, for an overview.
I wish I'd read it a year ago.
This is the very bes!!!.......2006-07-13
If you are thinking about exploring Homeopathy this is the book to read first. For those that have experienced the wonderful effects of homeopathy and want a refresher course, or a question answered....you'll find it here.
Well worth it.......2003-04-23
The author describes what homeopathy is and how it works in a very clear style. This book will help the newcomer understand homeopathy and I highly recommend it.

The striking common sense of the author's perspective on design and the building process is based on millennia of use of earth-sheltered homes by animals and humans, using the earth to warm in winter and cool in summer. A cartoon on the book jacket summarizes Wells's perspective. One panel is called "20th Century," and has four steps of traditional building: love nature, kill it, build building, plant grass. The second panel, called "21st Century," says: love nature, leave it alone, find ruined land, build underground, restore natural habitat.
Wells's remarkable and imaginative architectural drawings, sketches, and landscaping and structural design plans are surrounded by his handwritten commentary about Earth-friendly building and design, cryptic remarks and humorous asides that make this book a pleasure to browse or read cover to cover. He offers a breathtaking assortment of some of the most creative and unusual home and building designs ever assembled in one book; site-appropriate structures for both urban and rural settings; and delightfully imaginative, dramatic, simple, and highly complex buildings for all purposes. Some are fully underground structures, some partially earth-sheltered, but all make the best use of light sources, designed to benefit from the sun and seasonal changes, and to protect or restore the natural habitat around and above them.
Wells's designs seem almost fanciful, but are indeed based on practical considerations and currently usable techniques and materials, helping open up a whole new concept of building based on one of the oldest known: caves and burrows. These are "caves and burrows" of soaring imagination and creative, 21st century brilliance. --Mark A. Hetts
Customer Reviews:
why I don't understand Malcolm Wells.......2007-04-16
It seems that most of the reviewers have not read Malcolm's books other than this one. Mac never contends these to be guidwlines or tech-point renderings. But he is a master at formulating underground architecture. The reason that many homes didn't get built is that budget for this form of building DOES cost more, and more more efficient and earth friendly, whereas otherwise non-sustainable homes are not. This is a sketchbook, not a building manual, he does in fact sell architectural plans outside of this. These are to illuminate and vibrate the stagnant soul. It appears that some souls are more stagnant than others. Mac's books do read journal-wise and are more storylike. That's merely the way he writes. He is a warm, engaging and socially responsible human being that has found a better way to build. So, people, off the high horses.
Not a how-to, but a great book for ideas.......2006-04-07
This is a great book, if you take it for what it is - a collection of sketches and ideas working to tackle the problems of underground house design. Unlike Rob Roy or Mike Oheler, who have their set methods for how to build your underground house, and who aren't much interested in other methods, Wells is interested in exporing the full spectrum of possibilities for underground structures. Many of his ideas are for larger (commercial or institutional) buildings, but houses are included as well.
The real strength of this book is in learning, along with Wells, why some of his ideas (sketches) wouldn't or didn't work. If you want a step-by-step how-to on building a home, this is not the book for you. If you're seriously considering building your own underground home (particularly if you are the builder) this book is a very important resource.
The Earth-Sheltered House: An Architect's Sketchbook (Real G.......2005-05-10
The cover looks good. PLEASE don't waste your money on this book. The information is useless. I'm not a designer but I believe I could draw (and even do a better job) some pictures of what I think an earth shelter would look like and do better than making a Fantasy hobbit home.
Inspiring Book.......2004-05-31
From an architects point of view, I found this book to be very intersting in that it proposes design concepts rarely considered in a world where everyone wants a stainless steel refrigerator and granite countertops. It certainly isn't meant as a "how to" book for the weekend warrior who wants to save a few bucks on his electricity bill. I found it to be a resource for opening minds, not just opening the ground.
hard to read.......2004-04-17
As others have pointed out none of the plans shown in the book seem to have been built. Every single one looks to have been cancelled because of budget problems. Which makes you wonder, if people with enough money to go to a professional architect find an earth-sheltered house too expensive to build, what hope do the rest of us have of building one in our lifetimes? Lots of interesting ideas but not much practical application that I can see.
However my biggest gripe is the font used in the book: a script font that is an attempt to make the book look like a hand written journal. I just found it very hard to read large amount of text with that font. They should have stuck with a normal typeface instead of trying to get cute.
Hard to recommend unless you can handle the typeface and don't mind that the book has no real practical information. (Although lots of interesting IDEAS.)
Customer Reviews:
about time.......2006-01-26
It is about time someone wrote a book that falls within the new age world of health and healing with some straight forward integrity. Thank you Mr. Dwinell. The stories are wonderful and raw, all the while his pure zest for life is inspiring. `The Earth Was Flat' is certainly worth the read.
Inspirational! A wonderful read for all audiences. .......2005-08-31
Entertaining and educational filled with wit and piercing honesty. Dwinell's journal entries were filled with adventure of body mind and spirit. And his insight into our current existence was amusing, informative and heart felt. The overall concept of staring into the sun, breatharianism as well as healing and evolving was presented with a grounding and sincere voice. Overall a very impressive book that is well written and well presented. I am looking forward to his next work.

Why yes. It is a followup........2000-04-10
Brought on by the success of the previous 4 books from Tanith Lee's flat earth.
There is no central plot. No cataclysmic schemes or happenings. And by that very absence we are free to see the central theme running through all the flat earth books (including this one). The reason they are marvels.
It is Ms. Lee's own version of "Nevertheless". (In my opinion much better that the original).
So we are pawn on the chessboard of the gods. So they pull us high or low by whim and happenstance. So what? Do you not hear the singing of the lark! It is so wonderful to be alive.

gets awards just 4 being there.......2001-05-17
not only is the book a great adventure, full of biblical analagy and dark humour, it's an opportunity to explore the unique relationship between Azhrarn and his daughter, with an ending that even made a twisted ... like me blub. steal, borrow and beg for this book.
The Flat Earth comes of age..........1999-01-19
The "Flat Earth" series as a whole is definitely my all-time desert island pick. I've never read anything as incredibly beautiful and magical as these books, and I read a LOT. This book has all of the lush eroticism, shimmering enchantment, and fey loveliness of the previous two books, told in the same intricate, lapidary prose, and adds the powerful themes of growth and change. _Delirium's Mistress_ is the story of Sovaz (at first), the offspring of that union between Azhrarn the Prince of Demons and the priestess Dunizel which was a major part of _Delusion's Master_. Throughout this book, there is a sense of the weight of the ages that have passed on the Flat Earth. Much of the action is the result of long-past intrigues of the various Lords of Darkness. Shades of the past appear to advise characters at key junctures. The book begins with the love affair between Chuz, Prince Madness, and Sovaz/Azhriaz/Atmeh, which is quickly interrupted by the revenge Azhrarn takes as a result ov Chuz's actions in _Delusion's Master_. The remainder of the book concerns the heroine's search for her true self- is she Sovaz, the child of Dunizel, the Moon's Soul and embodiment of good? Is she Azhriaz, the merciless, all-powerful daughter of wicked Azhrarn? Or is she something more? Azhriaz's journey of self-discovery also becomes a force for the transformation of other characters. By the book's end, Azhrarn has been forever changed by the love of Dunizel and her daughter. The cruel Zhirek of _Death's Master_ is reborn as a gentle healer and teacher through his association with Azhriaz. And a much-mellowed Chuz is eventually reunited with his beloved, who finally knows who she is and what she must do. This is a truly wonderful book... it continues all of the exotic magic and mystery of the first two books, and adds some real wisdom and humanity, too.
mind boggling enchantment, the ultimate fairy tale.......1999-01-05
Tannith Lee takes us back to the flat earth to continue her tale with Azriaz, the prince of demons daughter. her fated love of chuz, the demon of wickedness and her inner light from her mother, dunizel, make this book incredible in both its narrative and descriptions. Tannith Lee is a master of words and takes you so deep into her world you may never be able to leave.
