Great reference/cheat sheet.......2007-07-26
I have used this book on all my performance reviews, it is so good, that I could not stop picking phrases from it, and my boss had to tell me to be "less verbose" in my self assessment!
Book for new managers.......2007-07-15
This book was recommended in one of my management classes. I was able view it during one of the class breaks. Immediately, I knew it will save me time and effort. Many useful phrases to help and prompt thoughts for reviewing team members.
A good guide .......2007-07-05
I purchased this guide for the supervisors on my team because it gives phrases to use when appraising employees. Its also gives phrases to use when writing awards or other evaulations of performance. The guide is organized into different areas-teamwork, communication skills, productivity, etc. which helps find helpful phrases to use. This guide is simple but elegant in its usefulness.
Who needs this? .......2007-06-12
If I sat on a toilet all day thinking of sycophantic half-sentences, this is probably what I'd come up with. I hate to think about what the brain-dead, incompetent boob who needs a book like this looks like.
It's management speak like this crap that inspired movies like Office Space and television shows such as The Office and Just Shoot Me. On that note, maybe I should give this book five stars.
One thing's for certain, anyone in your office who orders this book should be fired immediately.
Helpful Tool.......2007-05-16
Very helpful tool in writing performance reviews and avoiding redundancy when writing performance reviews.

The book provides hundreds of phrases to use in performance improvement plans, plus an appendix of helpful individual words.
Customer Reviews:
Not a bad book........2007-05-28
This book was helpful, but not as much as I'd hoped. It would be best for someone new to writing reviews.
Specific, actionable and measurable reviews........2007-03-02
This is definitely a practical and usable book. A very good starting point for designing and writing performance reviews, especially with its wide scope of job types, and generous lists of example phrases for providing feedback and setting goals. I won't say it's perfect (despite rating it with 5 stars), because I think users of the book need to be aware that no off-the-shelf solution can work in every situation. Using this book shouldn't be about "copy and paste" but about conscious selection, finetuning and design.
That said, the majority of the phrases provided are very specific, actionable and measurable (very importantly). Paul provides a great model and great direction in an area that way too often is fraught with subjectivity, bias, poor judgement and fear.
2600 Phrases for Effective Performance Reviews.......2007-01-16
I would definitely recommend this book. I am presently involved in developing a template for a new Performance Appraisal for my company. The performance phrases in this book helped me define the guidlines for how to rate a performance in our work environment. Good reference book to have around.
A great tool.......2006-01-04
I think this book is just great. It really helps you think about the performance of your direct reports and to articulate it clearly. I appreciate the way the book is laid out too - very helpful "goals" section helps you give constructive feedback to your employees. This book literally sits open on my desk as I write each review.
Great Book! Just what I needed........2005-07-14
As soon as my book arrived, I started flipping through the pages reading a few of the phrases on each when I realized this book is exactly what I need. I've been putting off my own performance review for several months now (yeah, I work for a manager - the CEO - who is very bad at completing performance reviews). As if writing an effective performance review isn't a daunting enough task, for me at least, it's ten times more difficult when it's my own performance I have to rate. I'm my own worst critic and this book is going to help me be more objective. Every page contains relevant phrases that I know I'll use over and over again. This will become an integral part of my HR Toolset! P.S. - I stayed up past midnight & completed my performance review. It was a breeze!

Customer Reviews:
Practical, flexible, and powerful.......2007-05-28
Designed for ambitious, dedicated immigrants seeking professional positons, this practical handbook provides model scripts, asks poignant questions, and shows how to prepare for job interviews. Further, this hybrid book - part business advice and part language instruction - gives tips for success on a job from negotiating terms to preparing for performance reviews and collecting appropriate references.
In a better world, Scripts for Winning Jobs would be the standard text in vocational programs. Directors of VESL programs, workplace training, and career centers should stock this book and recommend it to their solid students. Their best students will have already discovered this outstanding book!
Never be tongue tied at a job interview again! .......2007-04-26
If you've ever worried about exactly what to say at a job interview, worry no more! This book walks you through a wide variety of job interviews, and helps you anticipate questions you will be asked, and will want to ask. And unlike other books I've seen on getting a job, this one even guides you through interviews with job recruiters, plus how to handle job evaluation and promotion interviews once you've got the job and want to keep it, or advance.
Whether you are looking for that first entry-level job or a skilled position, this book has all kinds of appropriate things you can say about yourself, your training and experience. This book provides not just one but several realistic ways to respond to the kinds of questions you might be asked at an interview. Moreover, they are specifically tailored to each of the many kinds of jobs presented.
Scripts for Winning Jobs helps you sail through job interviews with confidence, and get the job you want. It even helps you through the tricky salary negotiations with expressions that diplomatically get you into the salary range you want.
This book is great for people who speak English as a second language, but is also extremely beneficial for native speakers going through the job search process. You can also buy this book with a set of 4 C-D's . It costs more, but listening to the interviews reinforces your reading and helps put the right words on the tip of your tongue when you go to your next job interview.

THE MAN WHO GREW TWO BREAST.......2001-08-20
BERTON ROUECHE WORKS WERE THE BEST. HE GAVE THE AVERAGE MAN A EASY LOOK INTO MEDICINE. MAY HE REST IN PEACE.
great work.......1998-02-01
Berton Roueche demands more from us than most scientific writers; this is not pure entertainment, it is something better. These 7 essays, first appearing in the New Yorker -- and the last essays of this great detecitive -- are more than worthile reading; they are like having a look in the private notebooks of a person with a tireless, seeking mind. This is a good read.
A fascinating subject brought down by dull writing........1997-03-26
Unfortunately for Berton Roueche, the gripping narrative of Oliver Sachs set too high a standard for medical storytellers. After reading four or five of these stories, one can't help but wonder "where's the beef?". Not only are the stories themselves rather uninteresting (what's so outstanding about an organ player with a hand ailment?), but Roueche's writing style wipes out the feeble grip the book has on the reader. It doesn't flow; rarely do you find a sentence with more than one simple idea in it; and strangely enough, both he as the narrator and his QUOTED interviewees use exactly the same pizzicatto narrative... In short, rather uninteresting, plagued with ungripping writing and an unexpected amateurish style for such a seasoned author

Astronomers were among the first scientists to whole-heartedly embrace the computer and the Internet. Not surprisingly, the quantity of astronomy software and Web sites out there can now only be called "astronomical." Astronomer Jeff Foust and writer Ron Lafon have teamed up to sort through the chaff and give you the wheat. The Astronomer's Computer Companion isn't just a book, it's time: the time you could have wasted looking for software, images, animations, and data. With this book you can cut straight to the chase, and use your time to work--or play.
The CD-ROM includes a complete e-copy of the book with clickable links, so you can read and surf simultaneously. The collections on the CD are superb, with 132 shareware programs for the PC, 29 for the MAC, 148 images, and 38 animations. The authors' Web site will have updates for the links, so the book won't be outdated as quickly as most Web guides. The book's text is clear and basic enough for high-school students, but it is not simple-minded: even professional astronomers can benefit from the authors' thorough research to track down databases, references, and those all-important screen savers. --Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
The Astronomer's Computer Companion, written by a professional and an avid amateur astronomer, is a complete introduction to contemporary astronomy and a guide to the best software, web sites, and other computer resources for astronomers. Whether you have only a passing interest in astronomy or you spend every evening on a mountain top, you'll find something exciting in The Astronomer's Computer Companion.
You'll learn:
- What software to use to track the movement of planets, asteroids, satellites, and other celestial bodies-even how to keep a log of your sightings, generate star charts, calculate exposures for astronomical photographs, and more
- How to use the Internet to access high-powered remote telescopes for personal research projects
- Where on the Internet to find up-to-the-minute astronomy news or view the latest images
- How to use the Internet to share discoveries with astronomers around the world through newsgroups and chat rooms
- Where on the Internet to find answers to your astronomy questions quickly
About the CD-ROM:
The Astronomer's Computer Companion CD-ROM includes hundreds of megabytes of software (over 100 freeware, shareware, and demo programs)-saving you hours and hours of downloading time and bringing everything together in one place. In addition, the authors include dozens of fascinating astronomical images and animations, as well as a searchable electronic version of the book (in Adobe's PDF format) that you can read as you click the hyperlinks to browse the Web sites referenced throughout the book.
Customer Reviews:
I wanted to like this book.......2005-12-12
I wanted to like this book but in the end I have to wonder what the purpose of buying a book whose contents can be found in 10 minutes searching the internet. This book was perhaps of some value 5 years ago. I expected that this book would be more than a description of websites and programs and contain some 'how-to' information. Pages 293 through 482 were used to describe what was on the cd.
There are better astronomy books out there and the software and website descriptions properly belong on the internet.
Excellent resource guide for Astronomers.......2004-11-07
I expected a large portion of the book to be on scope control and image acquisition. In reality only the last chapter is on that topic and the majority of the book is on astronomy through the web and through custom software. As such this is an excellent field guide to desktop astronomy.
Organized like a trip through the solar system and into the universe the book contains multitudes of links and references to points around the web and custom software. The illustrations are primarily screenshots of the software.
Given the content on the book I think more attention could have been paid to organization. The embedding of hundreds of URLs makes the text hard to read. However, that doesn't negate the fact that there a lot of research has gone into making this a comprehensive guide to what is available for computer astronomy.
Well worth the look for the look for the amateur astronomer or particularly for teachers looking to find online resources for their courses.
The Computer Companion is Aging Well..........2001-08-03
To be honest, I really didn't WANT to write a good review of this book. In my experience a book that does anything to overview the WWW does itself and its readers a disservice since reality will make it quickly out of date.
Surprisingly, the "Astronomer's Computer Companion," written in late 1999, is actually aging well. A good majority of the web sites it references still do exist and are helpful. Jeff & Ron's writing style is easy to understand and also easy on the mind without crossing the line into outright fluff.
This book is most useful for the armchair astronomer who has good access to a computer and the internet and who doesn't want to waste a lot of time aimlessly going through search engines. Jeff & Ron have done the work for you and again, surprisingly, the work still stands up well even in the face of a very quickly changing field.
They did a very credible job with a rather difficult environment to work with.
a must for any student of astronomy.......1999-12-05
For anybody with an interest in astronomy, and owns a pc or mac, this book is a must have. At first, I thought it would be rather "dry" reading. But, I soon found it to be written in very easly understood language that even a laymen like myself could understand and enjoy. It has a wealth of info. on web addresses on almost any aspect of astronomy; I was amazed at how many there are! And, it has lots of pictures of stars and galaxies, which I personally like.
It's About Time!.......1999-11-23
It's about time this book was published. There are so many really neat things an amateur astronomer can do with his computer. This book finally explains what and how a desktop computer is an astronomer's best friend. The included CD has some great programs and the book is a wealth of URLs and WEB addresses for all sorts of things astronomical. If you're into astronomy and have a destktop (Windows or Apple) get this book!
