In Using QuickBooks & QuickBooks Pro Version 6.0 you will find the information you need to do anything with those two applications. In a style typical of its series, this book documents everything from using the Start menu to setting up an employee under the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Relying on stepped procedures and screen shots, Using QuickBooks & QuickBooks Pro succeeds in communicating "how-to" information efficiently. It's a breeze to page through the excellent index in order to locate the subject you want. In most cases, you'll be able to turn to a succinct description of the solution you seek (which is what books about software are supposed to be like).

Gail Perry, a CPA, doesn't gloss over the accounting theory. She reveals the pros and cons of various inventory-tracking methods, the tax implications of key business decisions, and the ways in which QuickBooks' features relate to the "traditional" accounting you may have learned in school. This information is well written and informative, but you don't have to read it to learn how to use your accounting software--it's gravy for the curious reader. --David Wall

5 out of 5 stars Best Single Resource on Using Groups to Make Change.......2000-06-30

Think of this as a reference work on major strategies for making change in organizations. Bunker and Alban give clear overviews of well-tested methods at three levels: strategic planning, smaller group level, and individual job level.

At the strategic level, for example, you can compare Future Search, Search Conference, Real Time Strategic Change and other approaches to help decide which might best suit a specific situation.

Bunker and Alban also provide references on each approach, so you can get more specific information.

My only complaint is that there should probably be a revised edition one of these days to keep up with new resources.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for practioner and "lay" person alike.......1998-11-03

Although parts of this book are aimed at the practioner, Bunker and Alban are so clear and straightforward in theory and example that their book is invaluable for anyone committed to innovative, effective organizational learning and growth.

          Book Description

ASTRONOMY: FROM THE EARTH TO THE UNIVERSE describes the current state of astronomy, both the fundamentals of astronomical knowledge that have been built up over decades and the exciting advances that are now taking place. The writing style is friendly and carefully detailed. It serves as a valuable reference for both beginners and astronomy enthusiasts. This book is organized as a number of stories. Individual chapters often tell what used to be known, how space and other modern observations have transformed our understanding, and then what is scheduled for the future. This is done with each planet. Consequently, an instructor can easily add photos (available as slides, overheads, CD-ROMs, and on the World Wide Web) and movies and keep a student's interest for a whole lecture on each planet, if desired. Students learn about astronomy through concrete examples, rather than merely being given overarching concepts without enough underpinning.

            Book Description

Endeavour astronaut Jay Apt captured on camera many of the glorious moments of his space flights. This collection has been put together by Robert Brown with a commentary to give an insight into the experience of spaceflight. ‘I have been into space twice so far. In my opinion, there is no better way to share the experience of spaceflight than by pouring over photographs. The US Space Shuttle has, by far, the best expanse of windows of any spacecraft yet built. In fact, the view from inside is not very different from the view I recall from being outside on two spacewalks. What you will see in these pictures is what you would have seen out the windows had you traveled with us.’ Jay Apt, astronaut. Chosen for their aesthetic and educational value, these gorgeous pictures of Planet Earth, as seen from space, will both astound and enchant. Showing the Earth in all her beauty, this collection of photographs should be treasured for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars The Universe As Only Jay (and God) could see it!.......2002-03-28

I first heard of Professor Jay M. Pasachoff when I decided a few years ago to write a book, then develop it into an original fictional film project about the 27th Century. My first stop in my endeavor was to go to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center to find out what unlimited funds and seven hundred years could buy me in ship design. Then, I wanted to know what I would find once I got there so that I could write a great story that would be considered contemporary fiction in the 27th Century. I searched all of the space and science magazines. Nothing. Then I went to the library. Very little. Then, I went to the Internet. A little more. Then I went to the bookstore. Then I opened a book edited by Professor Pasachoff, called "Stars And Planets." There is absolutely no better roadmap to the stars in the known Universe - and I have looked everywhere for the best.

Then, only recently, I became aware that Professor Pasachoff actually has a "textbook" out called "Astronomy: From The Earth To The Universe."

I became intrigued and based on a very good recommendation, I decided to buy it...

Two days after I opened this hidden treasure for the first time, I am finally able to put it down long enough to tell everyone about it.

There are now two books that I totally recommend to everyone who is interested in seeing reality through the eyes of God as best as humans can perceive that reality. One is the Bible, and the other is this very book by Professor Pasachoff. I have learned more about the Universe from this book than I have through three decades of "Star Trek." No collection of books or videos can match this organized presentation, a single-source "greatest hits" assembly of the thoughts of our best scientists and pictures from our best instruments (including many from the Hubble Space Telescope).

This is a well-illustrated, brilliantly presented book that has almost a thousand pages, all friendly to the novice amateur astronomer (or movie producer).

The only pitfall is that it removes the need to build advanced, expensive spaceships to actually explore the wonders of the Milky Way Galaxy. Why bother, when all humanity really needs to do is read this book?

            5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Experience.......2002-01-13

I used this book for an astronomy course I took, and it helped me wonderfully in developing a foundation on the subject. This book covers just about everything in astronomy, and the updated edition fills the reader with the excitement of how rapidly astronomy is advancing. A wonderful book as a study aid and as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars I would like to see the updated version........2001-02-04

I got this book back in 1982 ... I enjoyed the ideas and thoughts brought up on astronomy. Now, much of the information is out of date. I see there is a newer version and I look forward to seeing what is in the 1999 version.

4 out of 5 stars Handy and accurate.......2006-02-13

I find this book most useful for the 12 star maps found at the very begining. It gives basic information about astronomy in a comprehensible manner. The book is handy enough to keep with you and with a small penlight you can reference the maps while observing the night sky, easily fits in a jacket or pans back pocket. Additionally I found the mythology behind the traditional western culture naming of the constellations interesting.

Only criticisms include 1) as previously mentioned, no star charts for the Southern Hemisphere and 2) wasted pages printing illustrations of the characters the constellations represent. These pages could have been used to add Southern Hemisphere maps or to discuss more then the listed 13 constellations.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the Southern Hemisphere........2005-04-28

Quite a well thought out book to take around with you.
BUT... limited use to me as there are no Southern Hemisphere maps or details (even the Southern Cross is absent).
Would not have purchased it had I realised. At least it was cheap!

Great little book for the beginner.Portable,so you can take it with you on your nighttime prowling of the universe.Written in a manner that newbies such as myself can understand.A good companion to all my other amateur astronomy books.Inexpensive,as well. Not as comprehensive as those other books, but this is a field guide, and it serves its purpose well.

            1 out of 5 stars Doesn't have any information.......2001-03-27

This book doesn't have any information for the dummy in the astronomy. The book is more like a museum guide to the starts. The information on this book is nothing new and it doesn't teach you about telescopes or related topics.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great little book.......2000-12-06

The Peterson guide is small and compact, but packed with information. When you can't take a huge volume with you, this fits the bill perfectly. I take it on cycling tours and hiking trips, where it fits nicely in a pannier or pocket. It's easy to understand, too - I gave a copy to my young neice for Christmas last year.

                  Book Description

The year 2003 was the 50th anniversary of the seminal experiment of Stanley Miller. This was a unique opportunity for highlighting the current interest in this most interdisciplinary subject. The leading space agencies: the European Space Agency (ESA) as well as NASA, the American Space Agency, have planned missions that will elucidate some of the still unknown questions underlying research in the origin of life. New results are surpassing our ability to keep well informed: the reviews that were presented at the Trieste meeting will bring the readers of this well-documented and timely book up to date in this fast-moving area.

An important component of the conference was the review of the Cassini-Huygens mission due to arrive in the Saturn system just one year after the conference convened in Trieste. There was particular interest in the status of the experiments that will take place inside the atmosphere of Titan, the large satellite, which is a testing ground for the theories and experiments in the field of chemical evolution.

The Jovian system is currently under study with the view of investigating the possibility of life underneath the frozen surface of the Galilean moon Europa; the ESA mission "Mars Express" and Mars Odyssey received special attention. Some of the world leaders in the field gathered in Trieste in September 2003 - that was a most timely date for reviewing recent data and discussing the prospects of future research.

Investigators and scholars in the areas of space science astrobiology, astrophysics, astronomy, origin of life, extremophiles and microbial ecology, graduate students and open minded readers will find this new volume of great interest.

                    Book Description

Astrobiology is a very broad interdisciplinary field covering the origin, evolution, distribution, and destiny of life in the universe, as well as the design and implementation of missions for solar system exploration. A review covering its complete spectrum has been missing at a level accessible even to the non-specialist.
The last section of the book consists of a supplement, including a glossary, notes, and tables, which represent highly condensed `windows' into research ranging from basic sciences to earth and life sciences, as well as the humanities.
These additions should make The New Science of Astrobiology accessible to a wide readership: scientists, humanists, and the general reader will have an opportunity to participate in one of the most rewarding activities of contemporary culture.
