    Book Description

    4 out of 5 stars Review.......2002-05-16

This is a quite comprehensive book. The authors cover a wide variety of insightful information and research in the child welfare field. Very good for anybody who will be working in a public child welfare setting or conducting research in this area. As with most academic reading, it tends to be a little dry. And, because there is so much information, sometimes it doesn't flow very well.

      Book Description

A compelling investigation of three incidents of torture in the Western world and what they tell us about how ordinary people can become torturers, about the rationalizations societies adopt to justify torture, about the potential in each of us for acting unspeakably.

Using firsthand interviews, official documents, and newspaper accounts, John Conroy examines interrogation practices in a Chicago police station, two raids conducted by the Israeli army, and the case of Northern Ireland's "hooded men," who were tortured by British forces. He takes us inside the experience of the victim, the mind of the torturer, and the seeming indifference of the bystander.

In the spirit of Hannah Arendt's Eichmann in Jerusalem, Conroy visits with former torturers, describes their training and family backgrounds, and examines the justifications they and their societies offer for the systematic abuse of men, women, and children. He interviews survivors of torture and learns of the coping mechanisms they deployed and the long-term effects of their ordeals. He draws on those meetings and on previous studies, such as Stanley Milgram's Obedience to Authority, to help us understand the dynamics of torture.

Recent events -- particularly the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo and well-publicized cases of police brutality in our own country -- make it essential that we understand such acts of violence, as the first step in eradicating them. Lucid and unblinking, Unspeakable Acts, Ordinary
      People
takes us further toward this goal than any book we have had yet.

4 out of 5 stars Before the War on Terror.......2007-01-09

This book is a chilling expose of its title - unspeakable acts by ordinary people. The book documents how torture in the "civilized" west -- Northern Ireland, Israel, and the US -- did not begin with the current war on terror. These brutal practies have deep roots in the routine activities of law enforcement and the demonization of the "enemy," whether they be Catholics, Palestinians, or black people. Followng the well known argument of Hannah Arendt, the book demonstrates the depth of the problem of human rights abuses by Western police officers carrying out what they believe to be their duty.

Here is a comprehensive review and analysis of three different contexts in which torture took place: Ireland, Israel and Chicago. Conroy's intellectual honesty is ravaging...

The aboved name book, I bought was well parked, new and it came to time.Appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful, but difficult read.......2006-01-19

Most of this book examines three case studies, from numerous different angles, unveiling the mentality of torturer and tortured alike. The breaking up of the three cases into non-sequential sections aids readability a bit, and the whole tone of the writing is very collected and non-sensational. It does a great job of pointing out not only the details of the individual cases, but the importance of those tortures as events for the societies involved.

It's refreshing that Conroy puts focus on first world torturers, and forces us to consider that so-called civilized societies can produce monsters just as starved, desperate nations can. And it suggest that a person can be a monster one day, and a normal, caring human being the next- it forces us to examine the importance of context, the universal susceptibility of humanity to cruelty, and the significance of governmental authority in converting individuals into torturers and back again.

Conroy also spends a few chapters explaining the history of torture, the trends that arise, and the elements where people are just unpredictable, and torture occurs in ways and places you wouldn't expect. Sadly, torture seems to be a major driving force in society, and in law, through most of mankind's history. Conroy also gives away the tricks torturers use to inflict maximum suffering with minimum risk to themselves, often using techniques that horribly scar the mind while making no changes to the body. This may lead you to evaluate current news stories differently.

I must say, though, I've read numerous books about war crimes, tyrants and acts of slaughter without difficulty, but this actually was difficult to read at times. Particularly the section about the 5 techniques awakened a disgust in me that I, as a hardened reader, rarely feel. This book is easily important enough to justify the disturbing details. But it's even more of a downer than the title would suggest, and sensitive readers may not be able to stomach it.

5 out of 5 stars Sickeningly Topical in 2004.......2004-05-21

"Unspeakable Acts, Ordinary People" is a thoughtful investigation of torture in the modern world. Conroy treats the subject journalistically, reconstructing three episodes: the torture of IRA suspects by the British Army in 1971; the torture of Palestinians by Israeli troops in 1988; and the torture of a cop-killing suspect by Chicago police in 1982. Along the way, Conroy reflects on the history of torture and its practice in countries such as Greece, Rhodesia, and Uruguay; he also explores the implications of scientific studies such as the famous Milgram experiment. The narrative is constructed out of media accounts, official documents, and Conroy's own interviews. The writing is calm and factual, even though the subject is horrifying.

Although this book was published in 2000, it will be a wake up call for anyone who naively thinks think that the torture at Abu Ghraib was the work of a "few bad apples" in the U.S. Army. The "stress and duress" techniques used in Iraq -- sleep deprivation, hooding, sexual humiliation, muscle stress, etc. -- are standard operating procedures for interrogators who want to torture prisoners without leaving traces of physical abuse. As Conroy documents, these techniques were used in Northern Ireland and on the West Bank; they were also taught to Latin American soldiers in schools run by the U.S. Army and the CIA.

The only thing unique about Iraq, alas, is the fact that U.S. soldiers were stupid enough to film their own atrocities.

                  Book Description

This comprehensive work takes you on a personal tour of the universe using nothing more than a pair of binoculars. More comprehensive than any book currently available, it starts with Earth's nearest neighbor, the moon, and then goes on to explore each planet in the solar system, asteroids, meteors, comets and the sun. Following this, the reader is whisked away into deep space to explore celestial bodies including stars that are known and many sights less familiar. The final chapter includes a detailed atlas of deep-sky objects visible through binoculars. The appendices include guidance on how to buy, care for and maintain astronomical binoculars, tips and hints on using them, and detailed information on several home-made binocular mounts.

3 out of 5 stars Is this the best book on Binocular astronomy?.......2006-02-20

This book was a bit of a disappointment after hearing all the glowing reviews. After wading through 6 chapters with terrible photo reproductions of telescopic (not binocular) views, where many sky objects are described as not suitable for binoculars, we arrive a chapter 7 which is the reference list of binocular objects. This consumes half the book and is a complete reference list ordered by constellation with a paragraph description of most. But you will need another reference to find them since there are no maps here.

The book is 15 years old and shows it. The author's comments about roof prism binoculars are dated and of course no discussion of image stabilized binoculars. Surprised not to even see discussions of the different ways to hand hold binoculars with illustrations.

It excels as a reference list of binocular objects but is not the type of book to excite the interest of those not already so inclined.

5 out of 5 stars If you have large binos, don't miss this book.......2000-06-14

This book covers +1000 deep sky objects plus solar system objects for binoculars. It includes many faint objects that can be seen with ordinary binos under very favourable conditions so the observers with large binoculars can use this book better. Although there are +1000 objects given in the book, most of them are not explained but rather their basic data like coordinates and magnitude are given. It does not have maps so you need an atlas with this book. However; this book is very useful with its tabulated data and constellation-based organisation. You cannot find any other complete and well prepared list and data of objects visible in binoculars. The author also groups Messier objects into 4 difficulty groups which is helpful for inexperienced observers.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Reference and Observing Guide.......1999-10-16

Touring the Universe Through Binoculars remains the single most authoritative source for people who want to view the night sky with binoculars. Sure, there are other books on the subject, but Touring the Universe stands apart for its thorough survey of the binocular sky. This book lists objects that the other books miss entirely (and that the authors probably don't even know exist!).

But readers should keep in mind that Touring the Universe is really aimed more toward seasoned amateur astronomers. Those new to astronomy may find some of the discussion a little beyond them, at least at this point. But you will certainly grow into the book if you stick with the hobby. And thanks to the flowing words from the author, that's an enjoyable task.

Readers should also be aware that the book does not have any star charts. That means you will need to get either a star atlas like Sky Atlas 2000 or the author's companion CD-ROM (which Amazon does not offer, but Sky Publishing and Orion Telescope Center do). It's great software even without the book!

2 out of 5 stars poor organization makes it hard to find doable observations.......1999-03-18

The first problem with this book is that for the urban or suburban observer with less than giant binoculars, it is too hard to find objects that you will really have any luck with. You have to sort through long lists of 9th-magnitude star clusters to find anything that would really be visible. The second problem is that a large percentage of the objects listed are pretty dim and crummy open clusters, and in most cases it is extremely hard to tell whether you are seeing the cluster or not. The photos are no help, because they are all long photographic exposures taken through telescopes, nothing like what you actually see through binox.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific book now even better with new star atlas CD-ROM.......1999-01-27

I have used this book since it first came out almost ten years ago, and have always found it a big help when planning an observing session with my binoculars. It talks about sky objects that are ignored by just about every other book out there, but that are *easily* visible through binoculars! Guess none of the other binoculars books bothered to really research the topic.

But now, the book has gotten even better with the new Touring the Universe Through Binoculars Atlas CD-ROM. A great value for the price too! I first looked for it on Amazon.com, but I guess they don't sell it. (hey, Amazon! hint hint). I ended up buying it right through Harrington's home page. Together, the book and CD are the most complete survey of the binocular sky ever created! My advice is to buy the book here and get the CD separately. If you like binocular observing as much as I do, they make a great team.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Star Charts.......2003-02-18

Recently, I have looked through a lot of astronomy books and Touring the Universe really stands out. It's packed with information that's presented in an attractive and understandable format with a lot of colorful graphics. What truly sets this book apart are the star charts that cover the entire celestial sphere. Wherever I go in the world, I have a star chart for it. Combined with the tables of events, I can plan my vacations for whatever is happening up there-until 2017!

I NEVER buy astronomy books--I live in Seattle! But since I've had this book, I'm amazed at how many times I've used it for camping, as a reference...even to settle arguments. Not only is it full of useful facts, tables and history, but it's laid out beautifully and simply. The photos and illustrations are beautiful, but it's less expensive than most other coffee table books out there. Who knows, maybe one day I'll even use the chapters on telescopes and lenses--check out the handy comparison chart on page 59!
