Customer Reviews:
A superb discussion of Christian estate planning.......1997-02-20
This book is excellent. It begins in the right place, that is, by laying out the REASONS for doing estate planning for a Christian family, then discusses the alternatives available for estate planning in easy to understand language (this is probably the BEST book in the field for defining the terms in real English, rather than legalese). Then the book discusses the important part of planning: deciding what you want to do to help your spouse, children, and plan for taxes, with alternatives explained and laid out. Finally, it has a realistic discussion about lawyer's fees and how to work with a lawyer to limit them, and how to call in other advisors to do some of the grunt work

John Fossum's Labor Relations: Development, Structure, Processes discusses the history and development of labor relations, the structure of union organizations, union organizing and union avoidance, bargaining issues, and the process of negotiations and contract administration. As a result of decreasing union membership over the last twenty years, more material in the book addresses employee relations in nonunion organizations including examples of both cooperative and adversarial relationships.

Dry, Overpriced, Adequate Information.......2007-04-26
Like many textbooks, this one is rather dry. Sometimes it seems that there must be some special training course that authors for textbooks must complete to learn how to be so uninteresting. Also, like virtually all college texts, it is extremely overpriced. The textbook industry seems like a great big scam. It is always cranking out new books with relatively little new information but great big price tags.
The text is adequate. The material it contains is accurate and understandable.
If you need this book, I recommend finding a used copy.
Horrible Reading.......2005-04-21
My teacher assigned this book for my Labor Relations course and I wish he picked out a better book. The definitions are awful and you have to read them like 3 times until you fully understand what information the book is trying to provide. There was one part that really made me think that this book was thrown together in a couple of minutes. One sentence in this book stated that, "Southwest airlines was not unionized." My aviation management teacher saw something wrong with this statement because Southwest is heavily unionized. I think the author had a particular issue in his life and was trying to smurf it off in his book. This book is definately not for beginning students, unless you have time to decifer what the author is trying to say..... I could talk more about how terrible this book is, but I think you get the point
P.S. There were some really bad run on sentences in this book
One of the worst textbooks around.......2005-03-28
Normally I don't have problems reading the texts schools use but this one is the worst book I've ever had to read. My instructor provided outlines of each chapter that were provided by the author. Without those I would not have been able to make heads or tails of this book. The author needs to ake this book less dry and more learning friendly.
Dry Reading.......2003-01-27
Sometimes books can't help but to cover dry material. This book does not excell past being extremely dry. The book is well documented, thorough, and comprehensive. The eight edition is aesthically pleasing, but still does not seem to achieve the ability to make itself an easy read. I would highly recommend another book for this study, or using this one as background information for study.

Book Description
Politics, Subsidies and Competition focuses on the interplay of political, economic and institutional-legal factors in the formation of European competition policy, with particular emphasis on European Union control of national subsidies. This book demonstrates the increasing significance of the EU in the management of European economies. It argues that state subsidization is the only remaining effective form of state intervention because, in the integrated European market, state aid - ranging from investment and export aid to special tax concessions - has become the only instrument that can be used to favor and protect national industries. This makes the control of state subsidization more important than ever, and the European Community's attempts to increase this control since the mid-1970s tell an intriguing story of fierce intergovernmental bargaining, business lobbying and increasingly assertive EC/EU institutions. The argument is supported by evidence of the evolution of European policy and by case studies of sectoral aid regimes and their transformation in interaction with EU policy. This book will be of use to students and scholars of the economics and politics of Western Europe and regional and public policy.

Book Description
Room to Manoeuvre offers a unique research-based critique of contemporary Australian politics, strongly advocating a greater role for government and public processes generally in economic management.
Boreham, Dow and Leet have developed a position quite opposite to the view dominant in Australia for the past two decades, which insists we ought to embrace globalisation and restructure the domestic economy in accordance with market principles.
Using a highly original and challenging strategy, they have investigated unemployment policy performance in OECD countries over two decades. They argue that contemporary political efforts to liberalise the economy by limiting the role of the state are in fact a cause of the problem.
This is a most important and timely book.

Book Description
In this in-depth examination of community policing in Seattle, William T. Lyons, Jr. explores the complex issues associated with the establishment and operation of community policing, an increasingly popular method for organizing law enforcement in this country.
Stories about community policing appeal to a nostalgic vision of traditional community life. Community policing carries with it the image of a safe community in which individual citizens and businesses are protected by police they know and who know them and their needs. However, it also carries an image of community based in partnerships that exclude the least advantaged, strengthen the police, and are limited to targeting those disorders feared by more powerful parts of the community and most amenable to intervention by professional law enforcement agencies.
The author argues that the politics of community policing are found in the construction of competing and deeply contested stories about community and the police in environments characterized by power inbalances. Community policing, according to the author, colonizes community life, increasing the capacity of the police department to shield itself from criticism, while manifesting the potential for more democratic forms of social control as evidenced by police attention to individual rights and to impartial law enforcement.
This book will be of interest to sociologists and political scientists interested in the study of community power and local politics as well as criminologists interested in the study of police.
William T. Lyons, Jr. is Assistant Professor of Political Science, University of Akron. He previously worked for the Seattle Police Department.
Customer Reviews:
The most important study of policing reform yet published........1999-10-22
Lyons probes deeply into the various and overlapping political struggles behind efforts to reinvent policing in the United States. The analysis focuses on the community side of policing reform, which is a welcome antidote to the overwhelmingly police-centered literature most often found in this field.
In Lyon's study, it was community groups that first mobilized to pressure the police to do things differently. These communities wanted geographic integrity, police-community partnerships to jointly target criminal activity, and more attention to order maintenance and police accountability. These citizens, for reasons that are thoroughly documented in this marvelous study, succeeded in pressuring a reluctant police department to create partnerships and experiment with innovative patrol strategies. They persuaded the city to hire a new police chief, known nationally for his leadership in community policing. These efforts initially paid off: crime declined.
Lyons skillfully explains the interactions among the loose coalitions of citizen groups and between these groups and police officers or administrators. He then draws valuable lessons about effective policing from the kinds of reciprocal partnerships that community mobilization created. This book is a must read for anyone, citizen or officer, interested in the promise of community policing and the political forces that can undermine this promise. At the same time, the failures documented in this study are the most impressive and insightful contributions of this book. While citizens did succeed in the ways noted, their success was short lived and, Lyons argues, the atrophy of their initial partnerships and patrol innovations now stand as significant obstacles to the advancement of community policing. Instead of reciprocal partnerships that improve the effectiveness and accountability of policing these partnerships have evolved into organizations dominated by the police department that serve to make it more difficult for communities, especially those critical of police practices, to be heard. The marginalization of those communities already most victimized by crime is the most important finding in this study.
Book Description
Here is an inspiring introduction to the planets, the stars, the solar system, the whole wide, wonderful Universe. Hundreds of exciting, instructive experiments that show how the Universe actually works using everyday materials. For ages 8-14.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful illustrations, good presentation of information, poor experiments.......2006-01-08
It was very hard to rate the books in this series, How the Universe included. In many ways, the book is excellent. The concepts and information are presented clearly and accurately, often in much more detail than usual in late elementary/early middle school. This series is produced by Dorling Kindersley, and though the organization is different (two-page spreads but with illustrated "experiments" and explanations rather that lots of picture-factoids), a flavor of the Eyewitness books remains.
HOWEVER, there are no experiments in this book. There are projects and demonstrations, but not one experiment. About 1/3rd to 1/4th of the activities are written as demonstrations that could be make into experiments with an adult's guidence so that a child is led to hypothesis and to test his hypothesis through experimentation, but as written, none of the activities can qualify. The remaining activities are either demonstrations that can't be easily turned into experiments or are simply projects, like making a telescope or a sundial. Some of the activities are also made ridiculously complicated and lengthy for the amount that a student would get out of it. For example, instead of sticking a sticker on a ball and turning the ball in the dark while illumated with a flashlight to show how day and night works, the child skewers a rubber ball to make an axis, uses two pieces of posterboard to place the axis at the exact right angle, paints the ball like the earth, puts a pin where he lives, and FINALLY, after several hours, uses a lamp to demonstrate something that without all the cutesy overhead would take less than a minute. Sure, you have a neat little globe as a result, but you just spent several lesson times on an activity that should have been a fraction of a lesson! The learning from the activity doesn't justify the time spent on it. Not every activity has this problem, but enough do that the overall effect is to lower the quality of the book.
Quite simply, this book would be a great resource for a flexible, knowledgable homeschool or institutional school teacher, but its educational usefulness exactly as it is written is limited by its flaws. On the basis of its flaws, I would give it a 2, but because of its great usefulness for the knowledgable user, I'd give it a 5. A 4 is a compromise.
The main topics in this book are:
Spaceship Earth
The Moon
The Solar System
The Sun
The Stars
The Cosmos
"Not Another Science Fair!".......2000-03-28
Heather Couper has scored a coup in writing this fun and exciting book to help you and your child be successful in school science. We used this book as a guide to a curriculum we wrote for a private school here in Washington. The students used to cheer when I came in the room with the lesson of the week which always came with an experiment from this book. Science was exciting and I never had any discipline problems. When you can properly engage a student and take away the fear of failure, you have won. This approach helped all the students but was especially impactful for the students with learning disabilities who struggled with the written word only approach. Get excited about science with your children! This book removes all fears.
GREAT BOOK.......2000-03-27
This book teaches much information about the universe, from quasars to black holes. It has many, many experiments kids can use to learn about different planets and topics. Great book!

Book Description
Ferguson's flexible and useful INTRODUCTORY ASTRONOMY EXERCISES, Second Edition, provides readers with laboratory exercises that are well-tested, current, and flexible to individual needs. These labs have a variety of origins and authors, and bring a broad range of activity to the introductory astronomy lab. Most require only inexpensive equipment. INTRODUCTORY ASTRONOMY EXERCISES, Second Edition, gives readers practical experience with the things they only read about in their book, such as using a telescope and CCD photography. Ferguson groups the exercises together by whether they deal with the solar system or stars and other objects beyond the solar system. Three introductory exercises on using telescopes, viewing constellations and the Celestial Sphere, and using numbers in science set the stage and help readers overcome anxiety. A combination of indoor and outdoor labs allows for adjustments due to weather conditions.

An excellent resource for astronomy students.......1997-11-20
Summers and Aitala have created a manual which aptly takes the student from lab to lab, in a straightforward and understandable method. The perforated pages are an excellent idea, allowing the student to turn in lab assignments once completed in the text. Excellent resource for professors who teach introductory astronomy.
