While once declaring it would never trust anyone over 30, the baby boom generation is now marching inexorably toward retirement. And, true to form, it is generally underprepared for the financial realities that lie ahead. In Retire Rich, Bambi Holzer comes to the rescue with a solid introduction to the basics for the uninitiated thirty- or fortysomething who recognizes that retirement planning should really be well underway by now. Through illustrations and a series of questions and worksheets, Holzer helps readers determine the amount they must put away to meet their individual future needs. She then introduces the various savings and investment strategies that can be used to realize those goals. "We know retirement will be completely different for us than it was for our parents. Corporate pensions have changed. Social Security, if we get any at all, won't be enough. And most of us haven't saved as much as we should have," Holzer writes. Her book gets the ball rolling by explaining, in simple language, the difference between various retirement plans, the mechanics of stock and bond markets, the mysteries of mutual funds, and the best ways to combine them all into a nest egg for the not-so-distant future. --Howard Rothman

5 out of 5 stars This book rates 10 stars!.......1998-10-09

I have always been intimidated by the language, numbers, and ins-and-outs of investing and retirement planning. The literature I have read in the past was always too technical and assumed I knew things I didn't. Well, for me, Retire Rich... could have been titled: Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Successfully Planning for Retirement But Were Afraid to Ask. This book provided me with in-depth, intelligent information that I have wanted and needed to help me make plans for my future in a very clear, non-threatening, easy-to-read style. I have gained so much knowledge and confidence from it! I plan to give copies of this book to my 30/40/50Something friends and family! Many thanks and cheers to the authors of this timely and informative book!

My husband shared "Retire Rich" with me. Even though he has been in the financail services business for 20 years, I have to admit I never really understood all the concepts necessary to feel comfortable with what we have been able to save. "Retire Rich" led me through the maze of complex financial terms/concepts and explained them in words and examples that I quickly grasped. I found myself saying "I never knew that" or "I see" scores of times as I read through the book. I especially liked the style in which the book is written, it doesn't talk down or up to me. In a nutshell, "Retire Rich" answers questions that every spouse asks.

5 out of 5 stars Lauren S.......2006-08-30

There could not be a better time to read this book. As our attention has been turned to the Middle East, no matter what your political beliefs, you can see how Israel's actions can be considered lessons that apply to the business world. Far more interesting than a traditional how-to business book, these lessons are equally important and presented in a more pertinent fashion. As a small business consultant, I have recommended this book to several of my clients who face stiff competition in industries with many ruthless competitors. This book proves that by staying smart, small businesses can have big success.

2 out of 5 stars Badly written, nice tidbits.......2006-01-05

If ever a book screamed for an editor with a big red pen, this is it. Look up prolix, this is what you'll find pictured. It may also be the most redundantly written book I have ever read -- there are essentially three or four points, and they are repeated with small variation several times a paragraph, a page, a chapter -- AAAARGGHHH! Never elaborated, never intensively critiqued, never actually contrasted to how it's done elsewhere -- just restated with a big handful of superlative modifiers.

BUT - I'm about to finish the darn book, and have persisted because there are a number of great, if undeveloped, anecdotes and people, some of them brand new to me, although many are drawn from other books. These tidbits are to the text like raisins are to bran cereal: the only things that make it digestible.

2 out of 5 stars Melodramatic puff piece with some interesting nuggets .......2005-09-07

This book reads as if it were written as a "puff piece" by the internal public relations department of the groups covered in the book. The writing style is way over the top melodramatic and would be embarrassing for a real journalist or serious historian. It is an unsophisticated portrayal of "Unit 8200" and other parts of Israeli intelligence and how certain high tech businesses spun off via members of Unit 8200. There are the nuggets of the book that could've been written and if you can get past the unsophisticated, melodramatic, and cheerleading prose then this book might interest you.

3 out of 5 stars Education and Business...and successuful.......2005-08-15

Recommend for anyone interested in a better understanding of the education (selective)and the successfull in Israel (a small country with many successful in the technology)...

To read... two o three times.... :) I'm in the second.... :-)

5 out of 5 stars Friends Or Rivals .......2005-05-29

I mistakenly thought that this was a book on business, after all it was in the business section at the book store. So I was surprised that what we really get from this author is a real life espionage tail. This book starts off fast and just does not slow down. Equal parts of the credit for the exciting pace of the book must go to the author as well as the audacious story. The book details how the nation of Israel views part of its survival the health of it's economy. Not a terribly original thought, but what they do to make sure it has every edge possible is what makes them and this book stand out.

The book details a number of James Bond like tails of daring deeds that make the reader want to shout "right on" and secretly wish that our government take a few lessons. So this is how a competent spy agency goes about stealing industrial secrets. The book does briefly touch on some of the business aspects, but at its heart this is n espionage book and a darn good one at that. Overall I really enjoyed the book. It was top notch reporting as well as a good job with the writing. If you are interested in Israel, espionage or just how they seem to have so many technological superior products, then pick this book up now.

        Book Description

EU data protection law is of great practical relevance for any company doing business in today's global information economy. This book provides a detailed and practical exposition of European data protection law in the context of the issues that arise in electronic commerce and data processing. It analyses the relevant EU legislation and case-law, and makes particular reference to the EU Data Protection Directives as well as to the national regulatory systems in Europe and the US. Numerous examples are taken from practice, and advice is given on how the relevant data protection laws apply to and impact upon business in Europe, the US, and worldwide. Beginning with a detailed description of the legislative process, the book goes on to discuss the basic legal concepts underlying data protection law. It then focuses on how to determine whether EU law applies to particular electronic commerce and online activities, and how to transfer personal data outside Europe so as to comply with EU law. The book also includes a comprehensive analysis of how to deal with complex compliance challenges, including notification of databases, processing of employee data, privacy policies, and website compliance and standardization. The key legislative texts needed to deal with complex data protection issues are included in the appendices, along with forms and precedents, contact information for data protection authorities, and links to useful websites. The book is fully up-to-date with the amendments to the Telecommunications Data Protection Directive passed in the summer of 2002.

                Book Description

The enhancement of e-commerce nowadays is one of the important policy issues in the European Union. To this purpose the laws of the EU Member States should be further harmonised. The European Union has adopted a number of Directives relating to different aspects of e-commerce which should be implemented in the laws of the Member States. eDirectives: Guide to European Union Law on E-commerce provides article-by-article comments on four Directives central to the regulation of electronic commerce in the European Union (EU), viz. 97/7/EC on distance selling; 1999/93/EC on electronic signatures; 2000/31/EC on electronic commerce; and, 2001/29/EC on copyright in the information society. In addition, a separate chapter deals with e-commerce and privacy protection, while the opening chapter discusses all other EU initiatives relevant for the regulation of e-commerce. This volume is meant as comprehensive legal source of e-commerce legislation for both academics (LLM-students and academic staff) and practitioners (attorneys, company lawyers, consultants). It is not only of interest for readers in the EU-Member States (because their national law is or is about to be adapted to the EU Directives), but also for readers in aspirant Member States of the EU, as well as for readers in other countries where e-commerce has emerged, like the Unites States of America.

                  Book Description

The European Union has long sought to create a single financial area across Europe where consumers in one country benefit from financial markets and activities in other countries. With the emergence of the Internet as a platform for the provision of online banking services, the creation of a pan-European market for banking services appeared a realistic proposition. In practice, however, this has not happened. This book asks why and argues that the creation of banking markets via the Internet relies on both available technologies and appropriate laws and regulations. The institutional and legal framework for online banking services in the single European market are examined, as is the level of legal harmonization achieved in the UK, France and Germany under the influence of the EU Directives pertaining to online banking activities.

                  Book Description

Electronic commerce applications all allow the transfer of electronic data from one point to another. Open EDI -- a particular application of electronic commerce -- also permits commercial transactions to take place in a fully automated and highly organised trading environment. This volume focuses on open EDI and its relationship with law. When confronted with technology, the typical reaction of the law is to support interpretations and amendments of existing statutes so that old laws can accommodate the change. Open EDI, however, does not fit within this traditional regulatory method. Open EDI permits ad hoc open electronic transactions irrespective of geographical border and jurisdictions among trading partners with no prior trade relationship. By doing so, open EDI limits the possibility of using up-front interchange agreements to address the legal problems of the interchange. It therefore requires the use of legal instruments supported by information technology to overcome legal problems. Openness in an electronic environment has the potential to initiate an unobserved change in law. Possible regulations should address users' need to act in such a trading environment without the inhibition of basic legal concerns. Open EDI and Law in Europe concludes that the challenge of open EDI necessitates working toward a new legal framework based on international law and supported by information technology. This volume will assist lawyers and laypersons concerned with the practical and theoretical aspects of the legal issues of the application of open EDI by pointing out subtle issues in the application of law in this area and by provoking thought regarding possible solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond electronic commerce.......2004-03-03

The emergence of electronic procurement, the UN/CEFACT BCP model and XML based transactions, have brought open EDI back into the monitor of e-business developments.

The stakes are high for those legislations that have not sufficiently embodied electronic means of B2B transactions. To those that have, though the challenges are ahead of them, since there have been no functional examples of legally binding on line negotiation models as yet that could facilitate true automated B2B transactions over open networks.

This book presents a superb overview of a subject matter that is here to stay and reviews potential solutions.

Astronomers confirmed the existence of planets outside our own solar system relatively recently--in 1992. Their long-anticipated discovery was hardly a surprise, but was quite a while in coming. Nobody has found an Earth-like world that is able to sustain life as we know it, but it seems only a matter of time before that happens. Meanwhile, Planet Quest explains the science behind the search for new planets. Readers who need to brush up on the basics of their own solar system will find a helpful introductory chapter, as well as an interesting discussion of why there is probably no "Planet X" orbiting the Sun beyond Pluto. The bulk of the book, of course, is devoted to extrasolar worlds and the planet hunters who seek them.

                      Book Description

A leading astronomer provides an “excellent introduction” (New York Times Book Review) to the search for faraway planets and extraterrestrial life-a “fascinating” guide (Astronomy) that is “everything a good science-for-the-public book should be” (Cleveland Plain Dealer). 5 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable and readable.......2007-09-03

This is one of the most enjoyable and most readable books I've read on any aspect of astronomy. It does show that some planetary astronomers are a bit more human than they ought to be, putting fame ahead of knowledge, but at least they're fussing about something that might conceivably be useful (but hardly, right?) and not about how old Time is, or how to convince me that there is no center to the universe although 'it did so start with an explosion!'. Much of astronomy, and all of cosmology, is just a big boondoggle for smart graduate students and their mentors, but at least the ones Ken Croswell writes about are almost 'down to earth'.

4 out of 5 stars Accessible, humanizing book on the search for planets.......2002-02-02

This is an excellent book on the given subject, covering the history of the search for other planets in a technically proficient but accessible way. Croswell frequently brings in the scientists involved and lets us hear what they have to say. Since the search for planets has often been controversial, this makes for exciting reading sometimes, as two leaders in the field take turns taking potshots at each other.

Mostly, though, it brings more of a human face to this arcane endeavor. Croswell also takes pains to explain how the search is progressing and how so many false alarms have managed to take place over the years.

                      Again, an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Planet Quest: Great for beginners!.......2001-06-13

Planet Quest is a great book for all you armchair astronomers who want to learn more! I am not an astronomer or even an amateur astronomer, in fact, Planet Quest is only the Third book I've read on the subject but my interest is growing. Planet Quest is very easy to understand because all of the scientific jargon is followed by words and explanations that beginners, like you and me, can follow. Read this book, you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Easy Read: It moves you forward.......2000-04-06

I generally liked this book. I will mention here that the author does tend to write in all the politics amongst the different astronomers and their institutions, making these people real and their discoveries intriguing. However, the bitterness he dotes on gets tiring in some places. Also, he writes to keep you in suspence and only a few times does the anticipation get annoying.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, detailed, informative and a good read........1999-10-24

Ken Croswell's book, "Planet Quest" is a must for anyone interested in the search for planets outside of the solar system. The book reads well, telling a fascinating story from the beginnings of speculation about the existence of alien worlds right up to the present when information is coming to us all the time about strange new worlds around distant stars. Anybody with an interest in the possibilities of life elsewhere must read this book.
