    Book Description

There is no more critical role for today's human resource professionals than that of Strategic Business partner (SBP). SBPs demonstrate competence in many ways - through their questioning of clients, their knowledge of the business, and their ability to translate business needs into performance requirements and people initiatives. But performing effectively as an SBP requires use of a mental model as a guide or rudder. This practical book provides that model. Experts Dana and Jim Robinson describe the four key concepts integral to this mental model and critical to success as an SBP. They describe the three accountabilities SBPs must accomplish: access to those accountable for achieving business results; credibility with clients; and trustworthiness for delivering results, working with integrity, and supporting the organization's values. The authors' detailed analysis of this subject makes Strategic Business Partner required reading for human resource pros on the way up the ladder.

Dana Gaines and James C. Robinson's STRATEGIC BUSINESS PARTNER: ALIGNING PEOPLE STRATEGIES WITH BUSINESS GOALS is the first book to consider the human resource professional's importance in the business partner role. Major SBP responsibilities elevate the HR person to that of strategic partner, re-defining the role and adding an extra dimension of accountability into the mix. Chapters explore and explain the partnership concept, its role and applicability in the workplace, and how the HR position can become strategic.

Bentham, Jeremy. Plan of Parliamentary Reform, in the Form of a Catechism, with Reasons for Each Article. With an Introduction, Shewing the Necessity of Radical, and the Inadequacy of Moderate, Reform. London: T.J. Wooler, 1818. 156 pp. Reprinted 2002 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN 00-058816. ISBN 1-58477-121-6. Cloth. $65. The legendary law reformer points his pen directly at the British class system as it is manifested in the Parliament and its processes, calls for expansive democratic reform in the form of "democratical ascendancy," (15) and praises the United States Constitution. After the publication of this volume in 1818, his plea for universal suffrage was criticized by the Edinburgh Review for the expectation that it would lead to attacks on property. 5 out of 5 stars A Great Followup For Flatland.......2005-03-29

Once reading the book Flatland, I thought the world of Flatland could not get much better. Then I read Sphereland. It is written in modern English, which is slightly easier to understand than the already not-too-hard Victorian style of Flatland. The book elaborates on what Abbot left out in Flatland, based on new discoveries coming mostly from Einstein since 1880, when Flatland was first published. The style of writing is similar to that of Flatland and amusing. There is a short yet good summary in the beginning of the volume of the Flatland world, just in case you did not read it, read it long ago, or just did not understand a few things about it. As in Flatland, the concepts are easy to understand, even for a high school student. You will find that the theories of dimensions are not too complex if you did not understand them before. It is also a short read. As in Flatland, there are a few diagrams to help you understand a concept being conveyed. The book does not present complex mathematical formulas; actually, it presents none at all. I thought that this book was very interesting, even if you are not interested in mathematics or dimensional theory.

5 out of 5 stars Right up there with Flatland.......2001-08-01

Thanks to whoever conceived the idea of publishing a combined version of Flatland and Sphereland - I would probably have never read this book otherwise - its under-known and under-rated. As a satire, Flatland is arguably better, but as a popular math / physics book, I find Spherland of a much higher quality. I would go so far as to say that there is no better way to understand conceptually the notion of a curved space than to read Burger's analogy. Get it before it goes out of print!

4 out of 5 stars A worthy extension of the classic Flatland.......2001-05-19

In my opinion, the best popular mathematics book ever written is "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions" by Edwin A. Abbot. Designed to be as much a satire on nineteenth century British society as a book on spatial dimensions, I have seen excerpts from it in several books on multi-dimensional space. This book opens with an excerpt from Flatland, and then moves on to describe how the universe of the Flatlanders is changing due to the universal expansion of their living surface.
The social commentary continues in "Sphereland" as newborns are killed simply because their parents prefer large angles in their shapes. Dogs are either of mongrel or pedigree stock depending on which mirror image they are. Finally, Burger also satirizes the intellectual segment, when the findings of the knowledgeable experimentalist are almost rejected out of hand as they do not conform to current physical theories. The sphere continues to make periodic appearances in "Sphereland", but it is also subject to emotional frailty, becoming quite angry at some of the suggestions the humble Flatlanders make about the world he inhabits.
While it does not match the high quality of Flatland, Sphereland is still an excellent description of the differences in the properties of spaces as additional dimensions are added. Being restricted to three dimensions, humans can only conceive of space with more than three dimensions with mathematics or by analogy. Both are used here and it is done well without resort to sophisticated mathematics. The satire also is of a high quality, although it must be read with an eye to the fact that it is an extension of the social commentary of Abbot. He was a strong advocate for the emancipation of women, working very hard to promote womens rights, and Flatland was only one part of that struggle.
Sphereland is a worthy sequel to a book that sets the standard for popular mathematics and social commentary. As long as you read it as that, it will be very instructive and amusing.

2 out of 5 stars Decient novel if you love math........2001-04-20

I feel that this novel is a bit to math consumed for my taste. This book is great if you like the dull, carried out sci-fi novels. My advice is to stayclear of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read (as usual) -- but a bit simplistic.......2005-03-22

Asimov's writing is in tip top form -- clear, straightforward, and with his sense of wit that is always present.

However, some of the questions are pretty elementary for most of his fans -- e.g., why does the moon go through phases, what is the future of our sun, what are tides...

Important questions, to be sure, but, not as engaging on his writings concerning the beginning of the universe, the atom, or measurements.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Reference Book or for Kids, But..........2004-01-18

This is hardly the best Asimov non-fiction out there. For the adult reader, I'd recommend any collection of his SF&F articles. I have this book and I've read most of it (this is coming from someone who's read at least 70 or 80 Asimov books), but I wouldn't strongly recommend it. If you're really interested, try your local library or used bookstore. Save your money for some of Asimov's better works.

5 out of 5 stars 3 generations of the Andersons agreed this is GREAT!.......2003-07-02

I first read this book at about age 35. Then lent it to my 66-year-old father. Just as was I unable, so, too, was he unable to put it down for more than a meditative moment to complicate Asimov's musings.

After Dad read it I loaned it to my older son, then aged 12. He had the same addiction as Dad and I.

The three of us are not prone to dwell on science, history, or anything of great consequence often, but we still frequently discuss topics first brought to our attention by probably the greatest, and certainly one of the most prolific and diverse writers in history.

I challenge any reader to not contemplate many of the thoughts expressed by Asimov in this fascinating and intriguing book.

Asimov and Hawking were probably the two most intelligent science writers of the 20th Century. Asimov alone, however, also was a skilled writer of history and fiction.

          5 out of 5 stars Required reading........1999-08-24

This is the quick reference handbook for our universe, written in simple and concise language (only 252 pages). It should be required reading in high school. Everyone should possess this knowledge. Read this book and see the big picture.

          5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......1999-05-18

If you've ever looked up in wonder at the stars in the night sky, or puzzled over the origins of the Earth, this is the book for you. A fabulous journey through centuries of scientific curiosity and discovery that left me wishing for more!

I remember back in the seventies when I rescued this book from being pelted by the rain from the back yard of my 6th grade teacher. I brought it home, dried it out, and read it over and again throughout the summer. Asimov's writing, particularly in the area of science is exhilarating, adventurous, deliberate, and amusing. His explanations of astrophysics, and planetary geology enhance the experience of black and white photos/diagrams/captions even though many of the facts, figures and labels may be out of date. And, it certainly did not stop me from reading it again this summer- 30 years later.

5 out of 5 stars Asimov on planetary geology and atmospherics.......2003-06-22

I still remember how excited I was after finding this book back in the early seventies. Up to that time it was the only popular book on planetary geology. I remember that the section on Mars was especially interesting and extensive. Of course, thorough as always, Asimov also speculated on the nature of the environments of the other terrestrial planets and the moons of the gas giants. It was quite well illustrated with black and white illustrations.

This book fueled an interest in planetary geology in me that persists to the present day. I'm sorry that I let my old copy slip away somewhere along the line.

5 out of 5 stars If you love and are devoted to astronomy ..........2001-09-28

... this book should be on your bookshelf. If you are new to astronomy and wish to learn some basic facts about our solar system and the universe, Isaac Asimov's compendium of essays in this book will help you grasp the basics and give you a good background on the "Whys." If you are seriously pursuing astronomy as a hobby and post-retirement profession, the book is an indespensible as a little book of known facts and non-intense mathematics regarding moons, orbital mechanics, gravity calculations, and "what-ifs". If you are a professional astronomer, what better way to bring your knowledge and love of astronomy down to the lay person. (Sometimes we learn so much, that we have a hard time explaining things to the little people who one day might take our place.)

Everytime I find a new person interested in astronomy, I come to Amazon to scrounge up a used copy of "Asimov on Astronomy" and give it to them. The book is obviously dated and new things have been discovered since the last printing in 1979; however, much of the book talks about things that do not change with time.

Hopefully, the books will be brought upto date and reprinted again. Thanks, Isaac!

3 out of 5 stars NOT A TRUE DISASTER BOOK.......2006-12-28

A range of disasters is covered here. Asimov begins with threats at the cosmic level, such as a reverse big bang, and works down to disasters that would destroy the solar system, and then only the earth. The last category include the least destructive and most managable dangers: those that disrupt our lives but would not wipe us out, such as pollution.

It became clear to me early on that this is not a true disaster book. We learn little about what these catastophes would actually do and how they might play out. Instead, Asimov concentrates on the scientific and mathematical possibilities and probabilities involved. A bizzare tone of optimism also permeates the book, as the author believes every problem can be solved and every danger avoided, if only mankind works together for the good of humanity. Not likely!

The young (or old) scientist with a global perspective will find this a great read, and all readers will learn a thing or two about how our end might come. But this is not really a disaster book by any means

In this book, Asimov explores and analyzes the different ways the world, or civilzation, could end (the "catastrophes") and estimates the likelihood and time frame of each one of them. He goes all the way from the macro-catastrophes (heat death of the universe) to the micro-catastrophes (disease and political turmoil).
Very interesting book that brings science and a dose of reality into this consideration of the ultimate demise of mankind.

5 out of 5 stars Will humanity overcome?.......2000-11-05

I was pleasantly surprised by this book(Dutch translation). I had never before read Asimov, and although I imagined him as a "serious" science-fiction author, the subject and title of this book made me uncertain about what to expect... Would it go down the popular road of feeding on people's fear? As it turns out, there was no need to worry. Asimov uses a nicely balanced approach to this mass-appeal theme to touch many fields of science and even culture. His message is not one of hysteria, but a message of hope. He presents himself as a true Homo Universalis of our time. Not in the sense that he pretends to know everything about anything, the sort of omni-knowledge that died after the Renaissance. But in the sense that he argues like a true World Citizen. A member of the human race instead of belonging to this or that nation/religion/sex/whatever. Of course, the subject of the book lends itself very well for this. So my impression is that Asimov found it more important to awake this feeling in the readers, than to write a sort of disaster-encyclopedia. The book is meant to assist us in becoming conscious about our position in space and time. About our relation to the past, the future and all the phenomenons in the Universe that completely outscale us in size, violence and duration. It is meant to make us feel tiny and insignificant in one way. But certainly also to unite us in a collective battle against the indifferent laws of nature and evolution.

I would recommended this book to anyone with a broad view on the world around us.

This is a review of a book "How did we find about Pluto," by Isaac Asimov. Pluto was discovered by a poor farmer's son who only had a tenth grade education. Read this book to see how this surprising event took place. The book tells about Pluto's size, what led to its discovery, and why it needed investigation. An error in the observation of the orbit of Uranus caused the discovery of Pluto. This occurred because of another gravitational pull, which was not explained. Therefore it was believed that another planet existed. Eventually Neptune was found. Still a small error remained. This was when Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930.

You will be astonished by the reading experiences you will get from this book. Isaac Asimov's writing is captivating and full of amazing facts. Such as Pluto being named by a little girl. In a way Pluto was an appropriate name because Pluto means "The God of the Dark Underworld," in Greek myths. Pluto received little sunlight since, it was the outermost planet from the sun. However Pluto does cross Neptune's orbit and becomes the eighth planet from the sun.

I recommend this book to readers who have curiosity in astronomy, yet it would strike interest in anyone. This book provides you with amazing information about Pluto's orbit and its moons. It is written in a simple but extremely interesting style. This book might surprise you many times until you finish.
