Book Description

How service industries can become more competitive by employing the principles of product development

As the lines between products and services become less and less distinct, managers in service industries-such as banking, insurance, financial services, utilities, and retailing-can benefit enormously by learning from product leaders, employing a rigorous product development model to create and test new offerings, develop the most promising ones, and see them to market successfully. Product development experts Scott Edgett and Robert Cooper draw from their extensive research, teaching, and consulting experience to offer service sector executives and managers a comprehensive overview of the principles of product development and how they can be applied profitably.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Repetitive but worthwhile.......2001-10-13

Cooper is the guy if you are into development - from idea to delivery of the goods - be it a product (widget), software or services. He is a portfolio management guy that will help you wrap your thinking around making investments into ideas that are yearning to make a debut in reality.

4 out of 5 stars Good, Practical Book But Repetitive.......2000-06-30

This is a very good book for managers of new service development processes. It offers a framework for designing and implementing a new service development process and there are many good advice and techniques in the book that I believe will prove invaluable to these managers. I expect this is the result of the 1,500 case studies that the authors have conducted.

I especially liked the sections that the authors have entitled "Points for Management to Ponder". These short bits, interspersed throughout the book, forces a reader to link the theories to actual situations in a company. I found such exercises beneficial to the learning process.

However, I found that the authors tend to repeat themselves throughout the book. For example, Chapter 4 and 5 are essentially the same. Chapter 4 walks through the framework fairly quickly with a real case example while Chapter 5 examines the general framework in detail. I believe the 2 chapters could have been combined without much loss to content.

I recommend this book to practitioners, as this is a very practical book. For readers who just want to know more about service development but are currently not involved in any development work, this book is not for you. Like me, you may find some of the framework difficult to understand without a real case to relate to.

5 out of 5 stars Lessons from the master.......2000-06-24

Well written and full of understandings... Bob, as with all his books, has made many key points. An excellent read for anyone who's business is dependent on new services and believes that luck is not a sustainable advantage. If you believe that the event or experience marketing is the key to most sales, then becoming excellent in launching new services is a must.

        Book Description

In recent years, European financial economists have been brought together, via research projects and conferences, by the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). These fruitful interactions have contributed to the development of financial economics in Europe, and have generated a strong flow of interesting writing---both theoretical and empirical. The chapters in this volume reflect the depth and breadth of the research interests of European scholars in financial economics. The first section uses empirical analysis of financial market data to test the robustness of the pricing kernel model. The second section is on market microstructure, which is based on the observation of high frequency data. It explores the implications of asymmetric information and market imperfections. The third section points to how the study of speculation may link both the pricing kernel and the microstructure approaches. The final section on corporate finance suggests that contractual and agency problems have a significant impact on the pricing of financial assets.

            Book Description

Analyzing how price expectations are formed is essential since the dynamics of market prices are mainly driven by the agent's belief concerning the future values of prices and by the uncertainty characterizing these values. This is a difficult task since prices are highly volatile in most markets and expectational behavior is heterogeneous and unstable.

This volume discusses the concept of rationality of expectations both from a theoretical and an empirical point of view, and both at an individual and collective level. Concerning the first aspect, the book focuses on how agents collect and process information and how market opinion is formed. Concerning the second aspect, the book presents studies based on individual price expectations and on the consensus revealed by survey data. To appreciate the degree of generality of expectational behavior, the contributors analyze price expectations in a variety of markets, periods and countries. Great attention is paid to financial markets which have represented the main field of analysis of expectations over the last ten years.

                    Book Description

“Jane L. Swanson and Nadya A. Fouad have written a book about career counseling that is user friendly, especially for counselors engaged in helping women and men make wise career choices. . . .The book is unique in that it links five major career development and choice theories to a particular person, Leslie. This case study approach is used throughout the book and provides an integrative thread that illustrates how similar the various theories are, and yet how they differ in important and useful ways.” -Helen S.Farmer, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign “Being able to see how career theories are brought to life through actual cases is such a contribution to the field. Jane L. Swanson and Nadya A. Fouad do a masterful job of bringing theory to life through the lived stories of actual career clients. I very much appreciated the book’s format, the examples, the discussion question, and the richly developed case examples.” -Mary J. Heppner, University of Missouri, Columbia “I especially liked the way this book is organized . . . focusing on the use of career theories and assessment instruments in relationship to a single case. Using this strategy, students will be able to see very easily how both career theories and assessment measures are relevant in practical counseling situations. This book will be an excellent text or supplementary text in courses on vocational psychology and career development and career counseling.” -Nancy E. Betz, The Ohio State University Jane L. Swanson and Nadya A. Fouad wrote Career Theory and Practice to provide readers with hands-on examples of how to apply career development theories to career counseling clients. The authors tie together theory and practice in an effective and entertaining manner throughout the book. Woven through the chapters is the presentation of “Leslie,” a fictitious client, actually the composite portrait of several past clients. As each chapter focuses on a different career development theory and presents specific cases, the authors enhance the practical slant of their work by applying the theories discussed to “Leslie.” This book is intended for students in graduate level career or vocational psychology or career practicum courses as well as counseling practitioners needing additional resources to strengthen their services or expand their focus.

This book makes an excellent supplement to any text in a career development course. Swanson and Fouad utilize 7 different theoretical approaches in order to integrate and apply career development theory.

The case studies make excellent use of theory and actual practice.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, & to the point.......2002-07-22

Okay, I completely aced this class, so maybe I'm prejudiced! :-) This book is well organized, and keeps the extraneous info to a minimum. The facts of each case are given, the rulings of lower courts (with reasonings), then the decisions of the US Sup. Court (majority and dissenting if applicable). Paying attention to the considerable footnotes was my "secret to success," along with copious notes. This book is an excellent tool for a student who pays attention and wants to get the "A."

                      Download Description

This book describes the equipment, observational techniques, and analysis used in the investigation of stellar photospheres. The opening chapters describe the basic tools, such as spectrographs and light detectors, as well as the physics of radiative transfer and the construction of models. Next the author introduces the measurement and modeling of the continuum spectrum. This is followed by the study of spectral line radiation. The final chapters explain how these techniques enable astronomers to deduce valuable information on basic properties of stars. For example, temperature, radius, surface gravity, chemical composition, rotation rate, and velocity fields can be derived from stellar spectroscopy. This textbook is written clearly and at a level suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students and researchers working on the properties of stars. The book is filled with real examples of stellar observations and analysis. There are valuable data and calibrations that are useful in real research, as well as extensive references to the primary literature.

5 out of 5 stars Aimed at the Oberver, Not the Theoretical Aspects.......2006-03-24

This book is aimed at the advanced undergraduate or graduate student in astronomy or astrophysics. It is well suited for use as a university text, probably for a one year course. It also includes enough matherial to be useful to research scientists who may have specialized in other areas. The orientation of the book is more to the observer and analyzer of steller atmospheres rather than the theoretical approach.

In my opinion the student should have enough of a background in astronomy to at least understand the concept of spectrum lines. And math through Fourier transforms -- Chapter two of this book covers Fourier transforms, but twenty-five pages isn't quite enough to provide the understanding that I believe is needed for the rest of the book, or indeed for the questions that end Chapter 2.

This is the third edition of the book. It is updated to include the recent discoveries in both observations and the analytical tools that have been developed. To a lessor extent, some areas of the book have been revised to follow suggestions made by users of the previous editions.

5 out of 5 stars Essential, fundamental and superb, yet not for beginners.......2001-09-04

This is a classical textbook on several issues of the analysis of stellar spectra. It is thorough, objective, very clear and superbly written, with illuminating physical insights and conceptual discussions. The reader will also benefit from the accurate mathematical treating. But it is not an undergraduate text: many topics are discussed in such a way that leaves the uninitiated feeling that the concepts have dropped from the sky. At times the discussion is brief and to the point, which is perfect for anyone who has studied the topic before and wishes a deeper understanding; again the novice might find him/herself unable to follow. The presentation of observational results throughout the text, corroborating the theoretical background, is very commendable. An excellent text to the very advanced undergraduate or beginner graduate student, with few rivals in the market.

5 out of 5 stars This classical book is a must for astronomy students.......2001-05-07

This is a classical book on the astrophysics of stellar photospheres. Its content is accurate and thorough but yet simple enough for beginner undergradute students. For a more advanced approach see "Stellar atmospheres", by Dimitri Mihalas.
