I've only read part of this book but wish to share that it offers some fresh ideas that all managers should be able to relate to, regardless of their field. Many of the titles in this field are vague, idealistic rantings from academics. On the contrary, I've found this book to be cognizant of the real-world pressures and challenges that managers face.
Too add to what a previous reviewer said, the negative reviews seem more like personal attacks on the author than anything else. They are not substantiated and in my mind, fall short of being useful. My initial impression upon reading them was that the author must have done something right to elicit such impassioned responses. In that sense, maybe an academic's perspective is not so distant as some might think...
Clarity and Common Sense.......2004-04-02
As someone who has worked in both the public and private sectors (for a number of years heading my own business), I found Abrahamson's book to be a breath of fresh air. He provides a clear, non-dogmatic approach to management that is rooted in real-life situations and behavior. His clear and accessible writing style helped to give this reader the insights needed to effectively analyze management situations and envision their solution. This is a useful and accessible piece of work.

A poorly written book on an important topic.......2004-03-31
The ability to manage organizational change is a crucial element of being a good manager. Unfortunately, Abrahamson's book does not do an effective job of teaching the lessons needed to learn change management skills. In his book, Abrahamson makes it apparent that he is a career academic with no real experience as a business leader. His examples are trite and unhelpful, and the lessons he tries to teach are either painfully obvious or too theoretical to ever be of any real help in a business setting. For a good book on this topic with solid advice and relevant examples, try either "Change Management" or "Strategic Organizational Change."
Contemplating organizational change?.......2004-03-30
My Board of Directors found this book to be very helpful as we restructure two companies (each numbering over 500 employees). We were able to put existing skill sets to new uses while still making drastic changes in our organization. I highly recommend this book to anyone contemplating change in your company or organization. Read this first!

Off-the-wall titles are confusing, and there's a dearth of teaching strategies. Too many samples are given (good samples), but the form and content of each is not analyzed, nor are the levels of language classification of the students' samples been given.

This is the first in-depth study of the interaction between the cultural traditions of Britain's ethnic minorities and English law. It explores the policies and principles that should govern legal responses to ethnic diversity, testing them by reference to six detailed case studies in which a

Another valuable work by Professor Sebastian Poulter on the interaction between the English legal system and the practices of religious minorities; an analysis we can use in multicultural America and every country working with multicultural and religious legal and social issues. The book would be useful for U.S. immigration judges to read to understand, for just one example, asylum claims where a woman may be claiming asylum to flee from a polygamous marriage in a country with a legal system permitting religiously permitted polygamy. The book would also serve as a useful resource to nations reforming their laws to conform to international law, where certain harmful religious practices permitted in those nations are prohibited by international law. Professor Poulter's work is appreciated by the Islamic community and human rights scholars for his considerate portrayals and analyses of religious minorities' problems with secular legal systems as well as his efforts to find just solutions for them in a culture of law and human rights. See, e.g., Sebastian Poulter, Ethnic Minority Customs, English Law, and Human Rights, International and Comparative Law Quarterly 36, 3 (1987): 589-615. (discusses the legal rights and culture-based claims of various immigrant groups and gypsies in contemporary Britain and mentions the roles and status of women as an example of the "clash of cultures." He analyzed the claims put forward by members of such groups for special legal treatment on account of their cultural differences and found that a few are non-gender-related claims but the vast majority of the examples concern gender inequalities: child marriages, forced marriages, divorce systems biased against women, polygamy, and clitoridectomy). This study should also be reviewed by immigration judges adjudicating claims for asylum based on gender persecution.

The Crab Nebula is the single most important supernova remnant in the sky. In October 1984 several active researchers compiled this review at a workshop meeting hosted by the George Mason University. All recent theoretical and observational work is reviewed. This was no mean task because more than a decade has passed since the last international meeting on this object. New ideas covered in this volume include the Crab-like remnant in the large Magellanic Cloud; the MHD model of Crab radiation; the jet; and IUE and IRAS data. The result is an up-to-date account of the astronomy of this supernova remnant.

Dramatic advances in ground-based and space astronomy, together with serendipitous observations of Supernova 1987a, have made the study of supernovae and supernova remnants one of the most active and rewarding fields in astrophysics. To take stock of these exciting developments and to give focus to future research, the International Astronomical Union held a colloquium in Xian, China, for the world's leading experts and this volume gathers together their articles. The articles summarize our knowledge of Supernova 1987a and give the first results on S\pernova 1993j. They not only demonstrate the latest techniques for interpreting spectra and light curves of supernovae, but show how they can be applied to measuring the cosmic distance scale. They also cover recent advances in theories for type I and type II supernovae, and observations and interpretations of supernova remnants. Two appendices provide a unique reference of newly discovered supernovae and supernova remnants. Together these forty review articles provide an up-to-date and wide-ranging review of our understanding of supernovae and supernova remnants.
