Black America's Financial Elite Tell You How the Money Machine Works-and How to Increase Your Personal Wealth

"Investment books tend to be as dry as the Sahara at high noon, but Money Talks is a stellar exception. Fairley has compiled a book full of practical tips . . . a guided tour through the labyrinth of finance with some of the most savvy money people in America. The chance to take that journey is well worth the price of admission."-Ellis Cose, author, The Rage of a Privileged Class and Color-Blind

"All Americans will cherish this literary work which captures the thoughts and deeds of Black America's financial elite. These men and women are playing a major role in reshaping the economic fabric of America. They are pioneers; they are trailblazers; but more importantly, they are Financial Freedom Fighters."-Kelvin Boston, author, Smart Money Moves for African Americans and publisher, Moneywise Magazine

"In her distillation of these successful individuals' approaches to wealth-building, Fairley creates models by which the reader can learn to adjust his or her attitude about investing. Each person's story reiterates basic approaches to saving and allocating money, always in the context of individual achievement."-Alvin D. Hall, author, Getting Started in Stocks

"In Money Talks, Juliette Fairley achieves a rare combination: she tells the inspiring stories of financial experts, coupled with sound advice on managing money and building wealth. This book is not only for African Americans, it's an understandable, jargon-free guide for everyone."-Jane Tillman Irving, broadcast journalist

5 out of 5 stars Good Ideas Without Money Behind Them Are Worthless!!.......2001-02-20

The authors did a fine job writing about the need for every one to educate themselves on the means to acquire wealth. Good ideas without money behind them end up worthless. This book is a very good idea and Jesse Jackson and Juliette Fairley deserve all the kudos anyone can muster.

The book explains in detail and by example how you first must understand the means to wealth and then practice discipline to acquire it! It is not matter of luck but culture and lack of knowing the opportunities that exist. When Wharton graduates become parents, financial matters are discussed at the dinner table. Contacts are maintain through friendship and networking. Opportunities are created from such encounters and knowledge of how the system of investment works.

Yet, we from the middle class use to discuss the football players not how the owners invested into the teams. The underclass of all colors are more disadvantaged. Thus, the authors can show you how to think of sports as a monopoly to be acquired instead of illusion of fan ownership with misplaced devoted loyalty. The difference is cleverly hidden. The fan wastes his time watching sports and spending his money to attend the games. As the investors who own the sports are making the money as they watch to boot. One must stop watching and start learning to invest is the moral of the story.

The authors point out nothing is not out or reach, if you acquire the education to invest on what you love to do and this book is the place to start. Jesse Jackson often gets criticized for putting his nose in places he feels are causes for change. Whatever your opinion of him, you can't deny he has not helped many people in many ways and this book is just an example of one of them.

Jesse is human like any of us and can fall from grace anytime and has had the courage to admit it. At the same time, he won't stay down for long and he desires what all leaders desire, a healthy economy for the benefit of all. Jesse Jackson is not the problem but part of the solution as evident by this book with Juliette Fairley.

I came away from reading the book with knowing the color of green with portraits of dead presidents knows no discrimination. Money is sought after with over glorified admiration by the many towards the few. Yet, if one is interested in money instead of being just motivated to acquire it, you will come to understand the difference between the two. Being interested in money as a tool for change is an entirely different matter than being motivated by money in thinking it is the answer to all dreams, fame and power. The book shows how to use it as a tool, for the benefit of you and others.

I highly recommend this book be purchased for anyone you feel is struggling to make ends meet in today's world of economic freedom or servitude depending upon your position and attitude. A book like this can change the lives of many.

5 out of 5 stars Barrier Breaking Keys To Financial Success Are Now Available.......1998-08-26

Fairley has created a sensible and powerful guide to getting ahead that will long stand as a guide to not only reaching, but also explaining the path to financial success. The insider information provided is not only powerful, but also profitable and a true must read for all African American Entreprenuers. The shared insight from America's most accomplished investors bring all who read this book into one of the most private fraternities.

4 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to investing and finance.......1998-08-25

Many personal finance and investing books fail to be effective by trying to speak to too broad an audience. Fairley accomplishes her mission of providing a straight talk introduction to an audience of African Americans (or anyone else for that matter) that has the means but not the fundamentals to manage their finances. Fairley steps out of the way and allows seasoned professionals give advice in their own words about the areas of finance that they know best in a way that is not overbearingo or intimidating. A must have for those just getting out of the blocks.

4 out of 5 stars good reference.......1998-08-24

This is a much needed inspiration and reference for anyone who wants there money to work for them.

4 out of 5 stars Solid base for any African American learning finance........1998-08-09

This book is a solid base for any person of color looking to have a basic understanding of finance and the stock market (basic investing). In her attempt to spread light on investing in the market, Fairley manages to inspire dreams to entreprenuership to those wanting more than investing in the market. From Frank Savage to Ariel Capital Management, this piece stands tall as an instrument for basic understanding in investing for the long term and simultaneously manages to inspire wanting to own your own business. I highly recommend this piece to those who have no background in finance and wish to expand their current viewpoints on making money.

          Book Description

This extraordinarily readable, cohesive text presents twenty-first century astronomy as a dynamic story of theory building and theory testing, as a fascinating process of observation and discovery. The authors' primary goal is to build students' scientific literacy by emphasizing how science works and why it is relevant, rather than by cataloging a large mass of individual details. With a clear focus on core concepts and carefully crafted pedagogical aids, 21st Century Astronomy chronicles scientists at work on the most important questions about the Universe, highlighting the excitement of making new discoveries and the puzzlement created by new lines of inquiry.

"One of the most exciting things about astronomy is that sometimes you get up in the morning and discover that we know fundamental things about the Universe that we didn't know the day before. The recent release of the results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite observatory are one of those historical moments."—Jeff Hester

          5 out of 5 stars A Favorite Astronomy Textbook.......2004-11-20

This is my third year teaching introductory astronomy. I've used three textbooks. Last year I got a copy of 21st Century Astronomy free--publishers are always trying to get professors to adopt their textbooks. Anyway, I really like this one. I haven't been able to use it in a class yet, but I would like to. I use it already to help me prepare for lectures. It's clear and don't talk down to the reader. Many textbooks get weighted down with frills, but not this one. The graphics are clear but never superfluous. In keeping with its title, it includes may up to date topics.

The other texts I have used are Kaufman, Seeds, and Bennet et al. (which I liked a lot too--it's a little bulky though.)

5 out of 5 stars Out of this world.......2003-08-06

Wonderful explanations. This is the astronomy book I never had as a kid! I'm a biologist and always thought I had the good fortune of working in the most interesting field. It sounds trite, but this book has opened my eyes to a universe out there. Now I even sort of understand black holes and the implications of relativity.

I use this book when doing readings of natal, solar and more. It is a wonderful source, however, the only thing I find hard in working with this book is the symbols are not clearly defined as to Lilith and Ceres. When looking of course the two symbols are similiar, however, Ceres is more defined to me.

At one point, Eclipse! takes time off from its primary task--a detailed technical guide to observing and recording eclipses around the globe--to tell the admonitory tale of the pupils of a school in Baltimore, Maryland. These eager and inquisitive children were not only kept in by their teachers during the event (owing to "legal considerations"), they were not even allowed near the windows! Of course, on the list of Things That Are Bound to Ruin Your Eclipse, other people's idiocy comes quite low. The top contenders are usually clouds and bad traffic. Lazy journalists who tell those of us disappointed on the day of an eclipse that this was "our only chance to see an eclipse" only fray our tempers further. This is, of course, nonsense. Eclipses happen all over the world at reasonably frequent intervals, and over the next few years they will be visible from many exciting locations. (Harare, 2001, anyone?) Philip Harrington's handsomely illustrated technical manual (none of your poorly reproduced NASA Web-site maps here) is both a resource for experienced eclipse chasers and an excellent introduction for those bitten by the eclipse bug. As one observer says, "No matter how much totality you've seen, it's never enough. Nicotine, alcohol, gambling, any conventional addiction you can think of; umbral dependence is worse." --Simon Ings, Amazon.co.uk

              Book Description

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fine book about solar and lunar eclipses.......2006-07-09

Yes, this book is a little bit dated, given that it gives plenty of advice about how to observe the solar eclipses from 1998 to 2017, and we're nearly halfway through that time period already.

The book tells us about the main things one sees during an eclipse. Until the Sun is nearly covered by the Moon, there are few changes. But once the Sun is almost covered, things do change a little, in a spooky manner. There is still plenty of light; it isn't at all dark yet. It may be a little cooler, of course. But everything looks a little strange, because the Sun has been reduced to almost a point source. Harrington does not emphasize this, but shadows get much, much sharper. It's weird.

Meanwhile, Harrington does spend some time telling about the shadow bands (on the landscape) that one may observe shortly before totality. These are not easy to see, and they are nearly impossible to photograph.

And then, you may get to see the Moon's shadow rushing toward you at 1000 miles per hour. Once it reaches you, that's the start of totality. As you get close to totality, the only sunlight is that which sneaks through some of the Moon's valleys: it is called "Bailey's beads." The final few seconds before totality, there is only one bead left, and that is called "the Diamond Ring."

By now, the horizon looks like a 360-degree sunset. And at last, yes, there is totality (and darkness...it is like being outdoors in the middle of the night when the Moon is full), with the Sun and Moon combining to look like a hole in the sky. You get to see the Corona, and if you are lucky, maybe some solar prominences. And it is strange: most humans know from experience that it is Wrong for the Sun to be blocked in the middle of the day. Meanwhile, you get a rather unusual view of the sky. Many observers will try to get a rare naked-eye view of Mercury. Or there may even be a comet near the Sun that one can see.

Harrington discusses eclipse photography. My advice is to leave that for the experts: if you try to do photographs, you may pretty much miss the eclipse. In addition, you may find it difficult to operate your camera in the dark! Maybe the best idea is to bring a movie camera to record the reactions of those who are with you.

As this book explains, it requires some planning to get to see a solar eclipse at all. Eclipses rarely come to you; you almost always need to travel to get to see them. Harrington does discuss the main problem: it may be cloudy, and if clouds obscure the Sun, you will miss the eclipse! That means you need both good planning and some luck.

Eclipses are unique experiences. I recommend this book about them.

              5 out of 5 stars Highly recommendable.......2000-03-21

I've been lucky to watch 3 total solar eclipses in my life, and still want more! This book was written by an eclipse-addict to help other eclipse-addicts, like me. I feel very grateful to Mr. Harrington for sharing all his experience and regarded knowledge to make the eclipse experience more fun. I'm now planning to watch the 2001 eclipse in Africa based on this book's advises.

The book includes charts, tables, photographic tips, and much more useful information. The only drawback I see is that it has no color pictures.

5 out of 5 stars The Aug '99 eclipse is around the corner,THIS BOOK IS A MUST.......1999-05-12

I have been planning my trip to view the August 1999 total solar eclipse for a few years now. It's almost here!! Thanks to this book, the best about eclipses by far, I am ready! Chapters detail traveling to other countries, what to bring, how to photograph eclipses, and even information about *every* eclipse between now and 2017. It even gives details about expected climatological conditions!

This book is more than solar eclipses, however. It also gives me new appreciation for lunar eclipses as well. There is a beauty coming up in January 2000 that will be visible right from my backyard. I'm now ready for that one, too!!

5 out of 5 stars Complete guide to nature's most spectacular show.......1998-07-29

Total solar eclipses are mother nature's rarest and best trick: for a few precious moments, a blackness replaces the sun.

This book answers the what-where-why, as well as capturing the awe of total solar eclipses, and also covers the related phenomenon of lunar and partial solar eclipses.

The book has the technical integrity to not "talk down" to the audience while still being interesting to the non-scientist.

              5 out of 5 stars Well written, fascinating - I'm hooked.......1998-05-23

I picked this book up in the library but it's one I will own. In one chapter all my questions about how eclipses work were answered and much more. Harrington has helped me discover the wonder and uniqueness of each upcoming eclipse, even if I won't always be on the right continent to observe them myself. An excellent guide book for everyone from the simply curious to the avid eclipse chaser.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference source -- highly recommended.......2002-04-25

I own this book as well as its companion canon on lunar eclipses. I find them both to be convenient and valuable references whenever I need to find information about past or present eclipses (which I do a lot more often than you might imagine).

What I find most useful are the maps of individual eclipses over a 50-year span and the maps of all total and annular eclipses worldwide over the much longer period of 1901-2100.

                5 out of 5 stars It's not called a Canon for nothing........1999-11-27

This is the definitive book to take to eclipses. Espenak is the eclipse expert for NASA and has all the math and software to generate the tables which make up this canon.

Everything else one hears or reads about where and when the eclipse will be, is just third through twelfth hand recounting and mis-recounting of the information in this book. It is not fun reading - it is a book of tables of numbers.

But careful reading and interpolation with an accurate map (or a GPS) and an accurate watch will get you the exact local time of second and third contacts and the actual location of centerline.

That doesn't seem like such a big deal until one is actually on the ground the day before the eclipse. One had been unconsciously expecting that somebody locally would have all the information, and then you find out that they had been assuming that you, the rich, educated foreigner, would know.

The actual real information is to be found only in this book. Don't leave home for an eclipse without it.

                Book Description

Everything You Need To Know About Sky Watching and The Solar System, In One Package.

Starry Night has been created to give amateur sky watchers an easy and logical survey of what there is to see in the heavens and how to find it. The book explains what's out there, from the planets and other objects in our Solar System, to the constellations that fill the night skies, to far-distant objects such as quasars and galaxy clusters. It explains in simple text how the objects move through and about the sky, and how the movements of the Earth help create this perception. Starry Night lists key information about all of the constellations in the northern and southern skies visible in winter and in summer. Many easy-to-apply instructions are placed throughout the book for easy reference, such as figuring astronomical distances, how to view a solar eclipse, how to determine where the planets are in any given month, when and where to observe meteor showers, and how stars are named.

But the book is only half of the package. Its companion, the Starry Night disk, graphically displays all of the night sky objects an observer might want to view, from our Moon to the far reaches of our galaxy, and way beyond. The disk gives you information about how to properly use, align and focus your telescope, and shows what you should be able to view. You can tour the Solar System, the Milky Way Galaxy, and the distant universe without ever leaving your living room. Or, you can use this information to align and focus your backyard telescope to find precisely the object or phenomenon you wish to view. Want to see the rings of Saturn, the Orion constellation or the Horsehead Nebula? Read about it, find it on the disk, and view it in your own backyard.
