Little did I know that AFTER I thought I'd never see the "light of day" concerning my finances, that this book would come into my life. It's informative, funny, well written, and just a great book for everyone. I've given it out to a couple of friends and then I thought, "Hey, GO BUY YOUR OWN!" Lee Silber is an author that makes it easy for someone, like me, that doesn't read a great deal, to flash those pages quicker than the remote on my TV. Thanks Lee! Book Description
A chief executive and a business strategist, both of a training corporation which is touted in this volume's pages, advocate a training philosophy which, they argue, more accurately identifies training costs and focuses on tangible business results. An appendix includes a questionnaire and a process map.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Book.......2007-02-08
This is a great book for showing the way to trainers so that they avoid the tendency to always do things the way they have always been done in an environment of changing business models. "Running Training Like a Business" is a welcome book in that it simply and methodically explains how the training function can be run effectively as a profit centre of an organisation.
The authors recognize the intertwined realities of a new workforce psyche, the technology-driven acceleration of information flow and the intense competition for knowledge resources. Adelsberg and Trolley offers a host of innovative down-to-earth techniques that can be applied almost immediately with little or no cost. Adelsberg and Trolley's book is a recipe for change which trainers are advised to adopt.
The book is recommended reading for managers who are interested in adopting the growing trend of running training as a business.
Balanced, Practical, and Applicable.......2007-01-04
As a training practitioner with 10 years of experience, I found this book to be a breath of fresh air. It provided many practical tools and applications for integrating training into a company's business strategy without losing sight of the fact that workplace education is inherently valuable to all employees.
Limited in scope..........2006-03-21
Management prescriptions for primarily U.S. based companies. Surprised not to encounter intercultural training, expatriate training and/or implications for Multinational Corporations.
A Welcome Guidebook.......2005-01-23
Training has been viewed as an expense in most organizations, a poor step-child to human resources, at best. It's a cost center in the minds of most executives, a necessary (or is it really?) evil.
With the move toward lean organizations, practically every department is expected to be a profit center instead of a cost burden. "If you can't make a positive difference on our bottom line, we'll out-source you" is the attitude of many executives today. So Running Training Like a Business is a book for the times. Like it or not, if you're in the training field, you'd better be reading this book.
Credibility. Trainers, like many professionals, are wary of all the garbage that poses as valid information. They need to cut through the noise to get the real meat, and they don't have a lot of time to wade through extraneous space-filling material that doesn't contribute to what they need to know. The authors understand. They're senior executives at The Forum Corporation, one of the premier global consulting firms on training and training management.
The authors get right into content. No wasted time here. The writing is concise, supported by graphics where needed. Bullet points at the end of each chapter reinforce what needs to be done to achieve solid accomplishment of objectives. It's a good business approach.
The book is organized into three parts: The Business Case for Transformation, Making the Transformation, and The End of the Beginning. The design is a familiar model to professionals engaged in behavioral change, making the content easier to absorb and apply. Organization change is what this book is all about, and the questionnaires in the back of the book will help the reader assess what needs to be done, progress made, and challenges yet to be overcome.
This book may be a bit difficult, in places, for some trainers. That's understandable; many trainers have not had sufficient exposure to the business side of business. There's plenty of training language to build comfort and a sense of familiarity, enabling readers to find a number of jumping-off points to stay with the theme.
As the author of "Lean & Meaningful," I can say that what van Adelsberg and Trolley have presented is very congruent with what we see in today's corporate culture. The role of training will grow in importance, but it must also grow in producing and measuring bottom-line results.
A Solid Effort!.......2001-04-24
David van Adelsberg and Edward A. Trolley are experts in developing innovative workplace learning solutions, in other words, training. Their book presents their program, "Running Training Like a Business." This book is enormously detailed, if jargon-heavy and somewhat bureaucratic in its language. It is filled with flow charts, graphs, and other visuals that will appeal to anyone who wants thorough strategies that can improve training programs. We [...] recommend this book to executives who design, oversee, coordinate, or purchase employee training and education programs. One caveat: the reader does get some sense that, with this volume, the authors are also marketing their program to potential clients.

The First Men on the Moon: The Story of Apollo 11 (Springer Praxis Books / Space Exploration)
ASIN: 1573561967 |
Book Description
Since the historic launch of Sputnik by the Soviet Union in 1957, the world has been enthralled first by the race to the Moon and later by the exploration of space. Lost in the international competition, however, are the hundreds of other missions (commercial, military, and scientific explorations) that have taken place over the past four decades. This encyclopedia gives readers--for the first time--a complete picture of every space mission of every country that has taken place from Sputnik through 1999. In addition to providing a chronology of launches worldwide (over 1,000 in all), this encyclopedia includes hard-to-find information on the scientific objectives and results of these missions.

Provides depth and detail on Palestine history and issues.......2006-03-06
The first edition of Encyclopedia Of The Palestinians appeared in 2000 and there have been vast changes in the region since, prompting the need for this substantively revised edition, which offers new entries about these recent developments. Articles have all been updated, photos of important leaders and events added, and fifty key documents included. Encyclopedia Of The Palestinians provides depth and detail on Palestine history and issues, making it a recommended pick for general-interest college-level history holdings, as well.
Concise Discussions Without Overt Bias Can Promote Peace.......2002-12-05
There is much more detail that should be included. Four examples:
1 - The first 20 years of the region's decoupling from Turkey is inadequately discussed;
2 - Faisel Husseini, the man T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) chose as his key to launching the WWI revolt) was assisted in escaping the Turks by Lebanese-born Rafiq Habib Gabour, the 20-year-old consul on behalf of Persia to Turkey;
3 - Rafiq Habib Gabour dedicated his life to evicting Britain from Egypt and from Palestine, yet is not mentioned in the book;
4 - Working-class Jews and Arabs of the region worked together to improve their working conditions, wages, and political freedoms. Yet, not one line to this effect is uttered. This is key, for those in power and those with a financial stake in the area may possibly have driven a wedge between the two groups for which the entire world is now paying a stiff price!
The organization also could be much improved. Trying to find information on particular people, such as Faisel, or his brother Abdullah, or their father King Hussein of the Hegaz, is a bit of a meandering trail.
Despite these shortcomings, this book is quite useful and remarkably free of bias that leads any reader into a particular judgement. It is a must for anyone wishing to gain a fair insight to Palestine and Israel.
I highly recommend the book to any individual wishing to gain an insight into the development of the region and the seeds of the current strife. Supporters of Israel will find the book helpful, just as will supporters of the Palestinians. Few other books about the people of the region can boast such a claim.
Excellent Encyclopedia about Palestine & Palestinians.......2000-05-12
This Encyclopedia in one volume brings together a wealth of unbiased information about Palestine & Palestinians. It walks you through a snapshot of Palestine past & current events. I gained valuable information about past & current leadership within the Palestinian community. For example, briefly it gives you a snapshot about Palestinian families & their well known family members (i.e. Husayni, Nashashibi, Abdil Hadi, Khalidi, Nsabih,..etc. families). Beside that the book also gave me a deep insight into the past & present political parties, their leadership, statistical data (population, immigration, water sources, ..etc) before & after the catastrophe, Israeli settlement, ..Etc. Although the book contained very good maps, it lacks pictures of its subjects & events. An Arabic & Hebrew version of this book is a must. Good Job

Customer Reviews:
Superb biographic reference Manned Spaceflight.......2002-12-26
The for now (2002) last in a series of 3 books on both flown and unflown astronauts and cosmonauts. Other updated editions are the "International Space Station" edition and the "International Space Year" edition. All books are A4 format and hardcover. Some pages in the middle with color crew-photos and mission-patches.
The fourth book in the series might include all Chinese cosmonauts which are in training at Starcity since 2002.
Every astronaut/cosmonaut is presented per nationality and per background ( civilian or mililitary astronauts, etc ... ). Furthermore there's a passport-photo of each space-man or woman.
What makes it so interesting is that it provides the CV on all the astronauts/cosmonauts, and therefore anyone who has any desire to become an astronaut/cosmonaut can form an idea which studies are required. A great refernece and a must-have book for space-buffs !
Excellenty biographic reference flown and unflown astronauts.......2002-12-20
Who's who in space is an excellent biographic reference for readers interested in the background of Astronauts, Cosmonauts and Spationautes alike. This book groups all Astro- Cosmonauts by nationality ( US + Russian + international = ESA + CNES + ... ) and then divides them down into Military and Civilian categories. Each book ( there're 3 editions ) is A4 format, hardcover. Later edition(s) might include Chinese cosmonauts which are training at Starcity-Moscow since 2002.
Each Astronaut and Cosmonaut is represented by his or her Official Individual portrait together with a short biography and a listing of the flown missions What makes it so interesting is that it provides the CV on all the astronauts/cosmonauts, and therefore anyone who has any desire to become an astronaut/cosmonaut can form an idea which studies are required.... Great book as it also has sections on Astronaut group selection and Crewphotos and emblems of the most important US and Russian space missions ...
Book is used by some SpaceCollectors to get it signed by those who're listed inside ! A must-have for space-buffs !
