From the supplier: First, we modify the Barro-Gordon model so that a credibility-stabilization tradeoff will remain, even when a performance contract of the type envisaged by Walsh (1995) is imposed on the central bank governor. We do this by modeling a real interest rate bias along with the inflation bias. Then, we discuss how various inflation penalities might actually be imposed on a central bank, and ask whether "inflation targeting" (supported by one or another of the penalties) is likely to bring a better resolution to the credibility-stabilization tradeoff than the ERM. From the supplier: Papers from a conference sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland are presented, along with a panel discussion. The purpose of the conference was to encourage research and discussion on policies to achieve price stability. The papers are divided into three groups: papers based on the assumptions that money is a key source of the fluctuations in business cycles and that recessions have been caused by attempts to end inflation, papers studying the elements of monetary policy in equilibrium models, and papers on the sustainability of budget policies.

          Book Description

Base your leadership development programs on proven-to-work techniques. In Building Leaders, authors Conger and Benjamin examine the very best practices of American and foreign companies to present a comprehensive plan for developing leadership talent at every organizational level. Here, readers will find an in-depth presentation of the specific skill sets that individual managers need in order to lead. They'll also discover which organizational values promote leadership, examine successful strategic interventions, and see what a successful leadership plan looks like. Equally illuminating is the section on plans that are destined to fail, along with the section on the future of leadership that shows readers how to design development programs that are most likely to last.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well-done book on leadership training.......2000-01-21

Highly enjoyed this book from Jossey-Bass because it clearly lays out the relevant issues involved in leadership development and training. It's concise and gives plenty of case examples. This would be an excellent purchase.

Also recommend a superb book our company uses for leader training - because it teaches managers very easily: "The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills."

5 out of 5 stars An important addition to the field of leadership research!.......1999-07-26

Stretching beyond the confines of books devoted solely to leadership theory, "Building Leaders" combines a conceptual understanding of corporate leadership development with the nuts and bolts of it all. Through impressive case studies of significant companies, Conger and Benjamin provide a blueprint for the design and execution of leadership development programs. If you are at all interested in understanding what will, in the future, distinguish those companies that survive from those that do not, you must read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very Relevant, Very Fun.......1999-06-19

Unlike a like of so-called leadership books, this one seems like it was actually written in the 1990s. No out-of-date references to "successes" like Wang computers or Saturn autos. Lot of Gen-X stuff. An easy read.

            Book Description

Here is a one-volume guide to just about everything computer-related for amateur astronomers! Today’s amateur astronomy is inextricably linked to personal computers. Computer-controlled "go-to" telescopes are inexpensive. CCD and webcam imaging make intensive use of the technology for capturing and processing images. Planetarium software provides information and an easy interface for telescopes. The Internet offers links to other astronomers, information, and software. The list goes on and on. Find out here how to choose the best planetarium program: are commercial versions really better than freeware? Learn how to optimise a go-to telescope, or connect it to a lap-top. Discover how to choose the best webcam and use it with your telescope. Create a mosaic of the Moon, or high-resolution images of the planets... Astronomy with a Home Computer is designed for every amateur astronomer who owns a home computer, whether it is running Microsoft Windows, Mac O/S or Linux. It doesn’t matter what kind of telescope you own either - a small refractor is just as useful as a big "go-to" SCT for most of the projects in this book.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Book .......2005-11-07

Author Neale Monks sees real potential in computer controlled telescopes. He wants his readers to put their home computers to use for astronomy and get involved in the online astronomy scene.

Monks also does an extensive survey and review of the software that is available for home astronomy use. A 3 page table compares 20 different software packages. Monks also concludes that there is not any single best operating system for home comp/astronomy.

Monks also has a lengthy discussion of what to look for in buying and using a comp-ready telescope.

This is a very good book.

2 out of 5 stars An hour on the web is time better spent..........2005-05-13

Unfortunately as with many of Sir Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy series, ones money is much better spent elsewhere. If you can find this book for under $10.00 then it might not be a bad addition to a library but it is overpriced and out of date within months of being published. If your reading this review you obviously are online, so save the money and spend your time surfing the web. Try the Cloudy Nights review sites or even the Astronomy and Sky and Telescope sites for more pertinent information.

            Book Description

The first edition of this very successful book was a winner of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific's "Astronomy Book of the Year" award in 1986. The popularity of the book's programs is based on the ease with which the amateur astronomer can perform calculations on a personal computer. The routines are not specific to any make of computer and are user-oriented in that they utilize a simple version of the BASIC programming language and require only a broad understanding of any particular problem. Seven new subroutines in this new edition can be linked in any combination with the existing twenty-six. Since the programs themselves take care of details, they can be used, for example, to calculate the time of rising of any of the planets in any part of the world at any time in the future or past, or they may be used to find the circumference of the next solar eclipse visible from a particular place. In fact, almost every problem likely to be encountered by the amateur astronomer can be solved by a suitable combination of the routines given in this book. Peter Duffett-Smith is the author of another popular astronomy book: Astronomy with Your Calculator (3rd Edition), also published by Cambridge University Press.

2 out of 5 stars I can't believe this book is still available.......2006-03-27

I own the original 1985 printing. I bought it for use on my AppleII+ probably back in 1985.
All the code is written for very basic BASIC. Yes, it is all suppose to be written as ONE program. The code routines all use GOSUB's. None of it is written for todays BASIC, or even older Basics like QuickBasic. Trying to translate or port the routines to todays languages is nearly impossible. First, it only supports Integer numbers, no floating point, so there is high inaccuracies in the calculations.
You would spend more time trying to translate this code then you would going it from scratch.

This book is too outdated to be of any use on todays computer languages. It was great in its day - it's useless now.

4 out of 5 stars excelent but Sadly out of Time ........1999-12-27

Although the book covers a great range of astronomical programs, its psudo-code doesn't make for easy translation into other landuages like C++ or Pascal. He goes through the program one by one, but one can't help but feel it was ment to writen as one big program. Not for the novice astronomer or programmer.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent but missing something..........1999-08-10

As the book "astronomy with a calculator" this book lacks the concept of tracking outside our solar system (other stars and galaxies). The fact that BASIC is used is almost bad, a better language to display science in is Pascal or now Delphi.

            Book Description

Astronomy on the Personal Computer provides the reader with a thorough introduction to the computation of celestial mechanics, which is of particular significance to astronomical observation. Covering everything from astronomical and computational theory to the construction of rapid and accurate applications programs, this book supplies the necessary knowledge and software solutions for determining and predicting the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, minor planets and comets, solar eclipses, stellar occultations by the Moon, phases of the Moon and much more. This completely revised edition makes use of the widely implemented programming language C++, and individual applications may be efficiently realized through the use of a powerful module library. The accompanying CD-ROM contains, in addition to the complete, fully documented and commented source codes, the executable programs for use with the Windows 98/2000/XP and LINUX operating systems.

5 out of 5 stars Good C++ book for astromical calc.......2003-09-21

This book does not use c-like/c++ but true c++. It begins with Vec3D class hiding private menbers. I learn many things of objective astronomical calc from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional value for money.......2002-01-12

What I appreciate about this book is that details of many aspects of astronomical computations are clearly explained together with extensively documented full C++ source code and references for further information. As a bonus, extensive star catalogues are supplied, for use with, for example, astrometry.

C++ is *not* my language of choice, but the authors seem to have done a masterful job of using C++ features well, while avoiding obfuscation. Initially at least, I am translating things as I go into Mathematica, as a check that I am understanding what I am reading.

All in all, for getting under the hood, I think Montenbruck and Pfleger provide exceptional value for money.

            5 out of 5 stars Good book.......1999-09-13

                  Book Description

At first glance, the challenge of astrophotography may appear daunting. But not only are spectacular results possible, they are easy to learn with the step-by-step instructions provided in Stephan Seip's Digital Astrophotography: A Guide to Capturing the Cosmos. Today, amateurs can produce images that only twenty years ago a large professional observatory would have been proud of; and this book shows you how.

                  Learn how to:

                • Set up your camera for optimum results
                • Focus your camera for razor-sharp images
                • Take beautiful night shots with a simple compact digital camera, a tripod, and a telescope
                • Use a DSLR camera to shoot the Sun, Moon, stars, star clusters, and nebulae through your telescope
                • Get brilliant images of planets with a Webcam
                • Capture remote galaxies with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera just like a pro

Also included are lessons on the processing that is done in the "studio" after your shoot, including how to:

                • Shoot RAW format images and improve them with calibration frames
                • Take short exposures of faint deep-sky objects and combine them into a longer exposure
                • Perform brightness, contrast, and color correction
                • Make corrections to correct for vignetting and uneven field illumination
                • Process your images for stunning results

Equipment requirements for astrophotography range from nothing but a simple camera and tripod to a multi-thousand dollar computer controlled telescope equipped with a CCD auto-guider and separate guide-scope. Researching the best equipment for your needs is a task in itself. Seip helps you to sort out which cameras are best for the various celestial objects, what to look for when buying a camera, and what accessories you really need.

The rewards of this fascinating hobby, as the author says, "Grants you unforgettable hours under the night sky; it allows you to produce aesthetically rewarding and lasting results. Astrophotography is a love-match between physics, photography, art, and digital image processing. It is exciting!"
