Book Description

Miller GAAP Guide analyzes authoritative GAAP literature contained in Level A of the GAAP hierarchy, established by Statement on Auditing Standards No. 69. Pronouncements in this level include FASB Statements and Interpretations, as well as APB Opinions and Accounting Research Bulletins. The book organizes accounting pronouncements alphabetically by topic under two general areas: generally accepted accounting principles and specialized industry accounting principles. Pronouncements covering the same subject are compiled and incorporated in a single chapter so that the authoritative information is immediately accessible.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book to Have on Your Desk.......2003-07-09

This book is the most useful quick reference to GAAP. You are able to find answers to any accounting questions very quickily without having to pay thousands to talk to an accountant.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2003-04-01

Jan R. Williams has made a career out of these nondescript updates and rewrites. Unfortunately, this book has serious problems and factual errors. Save your money!

1 out of 5 stars Mr. Internet says do not purchase!!!!.......2007-02-13

I have worked on several projects developing E-commerce sites. I am currently in a project management MBA program and purchased this book as alearning tool. The author knows nothing about the Internet. You will not learn anything from this book. If you must spend the money buy a pack of gum for $23.00 and you will get more for your money!!!

5 out of 5 stars This guide is the PMBOK improved and logical next step!!.......2004-05-22

This guide provides the detail and 'meat' that is terribly missed in the PMBOK. The PMBOK provides a foundation where as this guide will help you get to the 'what', 'when' and 'how' to apply a project management methodology. If you are running a project that involves software development, network infrastructure or any other techical project type, this guide will literally run you through the set up of your project, provide excellent tools for tracking and monitoring the project and reporting to senior management, and last but not least, step by step work instructions. I need to point out that this guide is valuable for ALL projects, regardless of the industry you are in - simply because it contains the detail that is so lacking in the PMBOK. I have used a number of the tools and applied-adapted some of the excellent work instructions in one of my projects. It was a tremendous help.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and informative.......2004-05-07

At last a Project Management book that focuses on Internet related projects! This book has all the practical knowledge I needed. It covers the entire life cycle of the project from initiation to close out. The book is well organized and has some great examples which are easy to use and very informative. Highly recommend it to anyone who is managing the entire project or if you need to understand the overall process flow of any good project plan.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A comprehensive approach to project management........2006-05-11

In the Project Manager's Desk Reference, Lewis presents a comprehensive approach to project management. He then goes through his model step by step from developing a concept to final project review and close out. The templates and additional models he uses along the way are extremely helpful. He addresses problem solving, risk management, and how to know when to pull the plug on a project. In the back of the book, there is a thorough checklist for project managers and a list of resources.

This book will be very helpful for anyone who needs to manage a project, expert and novice alike. The concepts and language are easy enough to understand for a novice, but so thorough that it will be useful to experts, too. The content tends to be more focused on projects dealing with research and design, product development, or something that is intended to be marketed and sold, rather than event planning. So event planner will probably want to look for another resource.

There is a wide range in regards to the suitability of graphics, textboxes, and tables. While some were extremely helpful and necessary, others were almost inappropriate, at best, or even distracting. The amateur nature of some of these graphics and textboxes only discredited the good context; but this book is an excellent book despite some of these things, but it would be even better without them. I would have also liked to see an appendix of the templates Lewis introduces throughout the book.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable reference material.......2003-10-04

Simple examples and clarity of expression help the reader to master even the most complex project management concepts. Be able to distinguish new and old earned value terminology as this edition uses the old language (e.g., BCWS, BCWP, ACWP vs PV, EV and AC). Otherwise excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Ideal for those that want to be introduced to Project Manag........2002-09-07

Project Manager's Desk Reference is a complete, well-written guide about Project Management intended to college students and to any person not familiar with this subject.

The topics covered by this book include Project Planning, Scheduling (PERT), Controlling (Earned Value Analysis), Reporting/Evaluating and Risk Analysis. The book also discusses other subjects that certainly will be faced by the Project Manager, like how to Improve the Communication Skills, how to Solve Problems and Making Decisions.

This book is not intended to experienced managers that need more tools to conduct their projects. These people should look for specific books about the aspect of Project Management that they need to deep into, like Risk Management.

        5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2002-06-19

This is direct and to the point. Lewis' writing style is solid and very readable. He does not have a pretentious know it all attitude like so many authors have today. Not only is this an excellent desk reference, but it also can guide you through the essential concepts needed for effective PM duties.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly Written and Easy to Understand.......2002-01-31

This book was a Required Book for a Project Management college course that I took. The book gives a good overview of the basic Project Management techniques that everyone uses, however, it does not get into real detail about some topics. It is good for the beginning Project Manager, or a student, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone studying for their PMP exam. The PMI PMBOK is a better reference for studying for the exam in my opinion

          1 out of 5 stars Obsolete.......2001-04-09

I am new to the 'home office' concept of working. A critical success factor in this setup, where face-to-face human interaction is minimal, is to have powerful telephone skills.

I found that the book is obsolete and does not cover modern-age telephone techniques including the following :

          - Effective Conference Calling - Effective Technical Presentations on telephone - Effective 'Bridge Calling' - leaving effective voice mail messages - Telephone Etiquettes - Mobile Phone techniques - Controlled Gossiping - Getting past the secretary to the Boss

Instead, the book digresses into normal sales techniques and telemarketing techniques, contradicting with the book cover : 'guide for manager or business owner'.

The book can better be retitled as 'elementary telephone skills for telemarketers'

          I am disappointed.

                  Book Description

Comprehensive profiles of the 57 most important observatories in the world, including 10 space-based telescopes.

Great Observatories of the World is a comprehensive tour of the 57 leading observatories located in the United States, Europe, Chile, Australia, India, Japan and the vast reaches of space.

The book begins with a brief and engaging history of the telescope and observatories. It covers 36 Earth-based observatories and their history, mission, type of telescope and other observatory equipment, and significant discoveries.

It then features 10 space-based observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-Ray Telescope, which have been mounted on space probes to monitor some of the universe's most mysterious events.

The final section covers 11 observatories of the future, including both Earth-based and space-based telescopes, and how partnerships between nations and private institutions fund ambitious projects of unprecedented size and responsiveness.

The book also provides fascinating information on:

Great Observatories of the World is profusely illustrated with photographs of the observatories as well as dramatic images of the universe they explore.

4 out of 5 stars Great pictures and overall descriptions; lots of numeric errors.......2007-06-10

This book is fun to read, and a lot can be learned from it, but beware of the numeric errors: do not trust dates, sizes, distances. Common errors include: billion sometimes means 10^9 and sometimes 10^12, distances to galaxies are completely wrong (e.g. 10 light years to M82), use of thousand instead of thousandths, and multiple others.

4 out of 5 stars A "coffee table" book for lovers of big telescopes.......2006-01-15

This book is an indulgence for those of us fascinated by big telescopes. It includes short discussions of each of the world's most important observatories, with brief technical interludes on topics like spectroscopy and adaptive optics. But this is not a book to read, it is a book to browse through, look at the pictures, and sample the text. The text certainly has its errors, such as substituting "millions" for "billions" in comparing the cost of space telescopes, and placing the date of the 3m Shane telescope as 1979 (it was competed in 1959 and renamed after Shane in 1977.) But we can overlook errors like this in a book designed for voyeurs. If big telescopes turn you on and you have a few extra dollars available, you'll probably like this book!

                    Book Description

Known to have existed in Classical times and still being made for a mass market, globes represent the oldest continuous technique for picturing the Earth and heavens. Originally aids to philosophy, the Renaissance saw their development as compendia of rapidly expanding geographical and astronomical knowledge, and as instruments of navigation and cosmography. They have been produced as simple spheres and as sophisticated mechanical devices, as toys and as high -status furniture; used as classroom and other demonstrational tools and as a symbol in the art of many periods. Until the onset of modern industrial techniques, their manufacture as plaster, wood or metal spheres was complex and laborious, and the skills required for their graphic construction and publication no less so. The National Maritime Museum at Greenwich has one of the world's largest and finest collections of globes, comprising over 300 items including terrestrial and celestial examples, armillary spheres and planispheres. Many of these themselves derive from earlier holdings, such as the Barberini, Landau, and Gabb collections, which were acquired en bloc for the Museum in its formative years through the activities of its principal benefactor, Sir James Caird (1864-1954). The Greenwich collection has now been fully catalogued by one of the leading authorities on Western globes, Dr Elly Dekker, who undertook the task from 1993 to 1995 as the Museum's first Sackler Fellow in the History of Astronomy and Navigational Sciences. The catalogue includes full entries on all items in the Museum's collection, the overwhelming majority being illustrated. There are also nine introductory essays by Dr Dekker and other NMM specialists, and an integrated section on the Museum's Islamic globes, introduced and catalogued by Dr Silke Ackermann of the British Museum.

                        Book Description

In the late 1950s, crowds massed to see a new spectacular and expensive instrument for British science. The Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope built on the Cheshire plains could be seen for miles around, but was equally visible displayed in documentary film, newspaper reports, and public lectures.
Science and Spectacle relates the construction of the telescope to the politics and culture of postwar Britain. From radar and atomic weapons, to the Festival of Britain and, later, Harold Wilson's rhetoric of scientific revolution, science formed a cultural resource from which postwar careers and a national identity could be built. The Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope was at once a symbol of British science and a much needed prestigious project for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, but it also raised questions regarding the proper role of universities as sites for scientific research.
