Book Description

Long accepted as a cost of doing business, occupational fraud has recently proven to be much more dangerous to a company than previously thought. Enron, Global Crossing, and other high-profile cases have shown that the risks can be enormous. Fraud Exposed shows how traditional methods of dealing with occupational fraud are inadequate and how an organization's mindset must change if it is to be more effective in dealing with this problem. In-depth insights and practical advice show readers how to apply criminal and law enforcement response models to workplace fraud prevention and detection; analyze financial controls to prevent occupational fraud; as well as examine and improve current defenses to occupational fraud. Written by an expert in this field, Fraud Exposed provides organizations with a realistic approach to uncovering fraud and eliminating it before any damage is done.

Nothing new here. It has all been said before; and better. I wish there was a chapter (or two) on government employees who attend graduate school on govt time (without any permission) and then have their academic papers typed by their secretaries (at govt expense). That would fit in well with the book's title.------

Book Description

Through five editions since its first release in 1959, What Every Supervisor Should Know has effectively responded to the changing needs of supervisors, and it remains the standard in the field of supervision. Now in a new edition, this classic guide to handling the day-to-day problems that supervisors face is: more current than ever-two new chapters cover the environment and innovation, this latest edition also treats such timely issues as computer surveillance and job competency guidelines; more personalized than ever-the new Personal Development Portfolio offers convenient checklists and sound guidelines on planning careers, managing time and coping with stress; leaner, meaner, and easier to use-the format is modular, and each chapter features three or more case studies, chapter-end reviews, and lots of easily referenced lists, tables, and charts. It's the best reference available for supervisors just starting out as well as for seasoned managers who need to freshen up on the basics or update their skills.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough and Comprehensive.......2007-08-20

The most surprising part of this text and workbook was not only its thoroughness, but the author who was kind enough to send me these books, free, when I was desperate to get training materials for a supervisory training course.

These books have twenty-one trigger cases, which is Mr. Bittel's name for case studies. They cover a vast array of topics which can be incorporated in a training program, but probably not as a stand-alone training program. It is set-up more for the undergraduate who plans to take a semester-long course in supervisory skills. But, just when you assume that managers and supervisors "should know" several topics in this book, you get the unfortunate surprise of your life, and learn that there are things here you can still use.

This is a great sourcebook rather than a stand-alone training program. I recommend it on that basis.

Thank you again for your kindness, Mr. Bittel.

4 out of 5 stars A textbook for Supervisor Training.......2005-08-02

Bittel's "What every supervisor should know" was probably written as a textbook, and I think it can be used as part of a supervisory training program. The book is a collection of topics derived from fundamentals of management, organizational behavior and human resources management textbooks routinely used in business classes. It is nice that all this information is presented and interpreted with supervisors in mind. I don't think the book is for the casual reader, but as part of a course incorporating discussions with a facilitator, it should do the job. It is not the most user friendly book I have seen, with little use of color or pictures. However, it has short cases at the end of the book which could be useful as part of classroom discussions.

4 out of 5 stars Just my opinion.......2000-10-01

Started using this book in a Supervision class I took at Purdue Unversity in 1987, and used it as a reference til I bought the 1990 printing in 1995 on sale at a local bookstore. I will be using the latest printing as a textbook to train foreman in my job. Very good information for a new front-line supervisor or as a reference for old pro.

Dry and difficult to read straight through. Set up more like a textbook, which wasn't really what I was looking for.

Book Description

Author Chet H. Elder provides school administrators with a simple method, called Exit Counseling, to rid their schools of mediocre, marginal, and incompetent teachers. He teaches principals how to build a case and document it so tightly that virtually any union challenge will fail. His theory is simple straightforward, clear, and concise.

3 out of 5 stars Simplistic, But Interesting.......2006-07-12

This book, written by a retired member of the Maryland State Teacher's Association who negotiated for teachers for most of his career, is an interesting take on how to get rid of substandard teachers. Well, at least that's what it purports to be. After reading this, I am not sure of exactly what Elder's true goal was: although filled with `case studies' of allegedly `bad' teachers (and some of them ARE truly shocking and truly bad), Elder doesn't seem - at least to my reading of the book - to have a good opinion of teaching or education generally. In the first chapter, Elder promises his administrative reader: "You are about to experience a paradigm shift at speeds greater than the race cars at the Indianapolis 500. The pages you are about to read will change your belief system forever." (1) He then states that throughout the book, his readers will learn the KISS system (Keep It Simple, Stupid) (3). To give him credit, Elder does state many of the obvious problems in education (specifically K-12, and most examples are from Maryland): administrations not reading or understanding academic contracts, administrators afraid of lawsuits and so do nothing, administrators not documenting incidents that could lead to the dismissal of a genuinely bad teacher. However, his book is also a little too simplistic; for example, he states that the only `real' weapon academic unions have is "fear": "Fear is the union's secret weapon" (74). In my experience (and Elder does mention items like this), unions usually know the contract better than administrators, and their `weaponry' is usually based on that. It seems that Elder, when working with academic unions, did indeed have some bad teachers who committed all kinds of reprehensible acts, such as improper relationships with students, lack of knowledge in subject areas, and disregard for campus rules and regulations. However, he seems to have the simple idea that most administrators are the good guys, and most teachers are looking for ways to stay in a job they are not suited for. I do not remember any `bad' administrators mentioned in this book; just, perhaps, misguided ones who didn't have his KISS system. There is also the idea that the `bad' teachers will even thank those who dismiss them; I find this hearkening back to the idea of `those who can't, teach', as if teaching is always a fallback, and so those not to good at something will choose it and see if it `works out' until something better comes along. Finally, some of the case studies are vague; for example, "Kathy": it is mentioned that several administrators found her "incompetent" over her 25 years of teaching, yet there were no negative evaluations in her file. Therefore, "Kathy believed for twenty-five years that she was a good teacher" (5). Why, or in what way, Kathy was incompetent is never mentioned; however, later in the book, Elder states that she was a `minority', and that could "shed some light on the absence of any negative evaluation documents in her file" (91). I may be reading too much into this, but I will state I detected a little implicit racism here: so, because Kathy was a member of some minority group (does Elder mean women in education, or a racial minority?), no one over 25 years dared write a bad evaluation. Personally, I find this hard to believe. I did enjoy the checklists on what exactly constitutes `incompetency' and `negligence'. I am also glad I read this book so I can better understand the administrators I work with.

                        Book Description

Observing variable stars is one of the major contributions amateur astronomers make to science. There are 36,000 variable stars listed in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars, so it is clearly impossible for the limited number of professional observatories to target even the majority of them. That's where amateur astronomers come in - thousands of them turning their telescopes to the sky every night. Variable star observing is the most popular of "real science" activities for amateurs, and Gerry Good's book provides everything needed. The first part of the book provides a highly detailed account of the various classes of variable star, with examples, illustrations and physical descriptions. The second section covers practical aspects of observing, everything from preparation and planning, through observing techniques, to data management and reduction.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all amateur astronomers.......2003-05-20

This is a great book for all amateur astonomers but variable star observers will be most pleased. The book covers a great amount of information such as how to observe variable stars, record observational data and report observations regarding variable stars. Also, there is a great amount of information regarding the many types of variable stars such as pulsating Mira type stars, cataclysmic variables, eclipsing binaries as well as many of the less known type variable stars such as SX Phe stars, BY Dra stars, Be stars and many, many more. The book does a very good job of covering so much information, much better than any other book available to the amateur at this time.
I would recommend this book to any amateur astronomer but I would strongly encourage any variable star observer to add this book to their library as soon as they possible could do so. This is a great book for the beginning variable star observer; you'll have more information than you can use for years.

Gerald North's complete practical guide and resource package instructs amateur astronomers in observing and monitoring variable stars and other objects of variable brightness. Descriptions of the objects are accompanied by explanations of the background astrophysics, providing readers with real insight into what they are observing at the telescope. The main instrumental requirements for observing and estimating the brightness of objects by visual means and by CCD photometry are detailed, and there is advice on the selection of equipment. The book contains a CD-ROM packed with resources, including hundreds of light-curves and over 600 printable finder charts. Containing extensive practical advice, this comprehensive guide is an invaluable resource for amateur astronomers of all levels, from novices to more advanced observers. Gerald North is a lifelong amateur astronomer. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer on Variable Stars.......2006-03-25

I first heard about this book from a good review article in Sky and Telescope magazine and thoroughly enjoyed it. Overall, this book succeeds as a primer on Variable Star observing. And, for variable star observers, this is definitely a must-have book.

Although the beginning of the book provides in-depth information on how to do variable star observing, the real strength of this book comes later when the authors explain what is going on inside the stars which cause the observed variability. Again, the authors are very thorough in providing explanations for all of the different types of variable stars. The book also comes with an easy to use CD containing star charts and variable light curves which supplement the book very well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Scientific Background Information.......2005-10-22

As an avid variable star observer myself, I found this book to be of great value. The first half of the book describes the process of observation in some detail. This detail includes a good deal of information about how the process should be done using CCD technology which I found quite interesting in it's own right as I am a visual observer and have not done any CCD observations yet. I do note the one weakness in the book is that the author brushes off the use of photometers in recording this data even though the AAVSO (the world's leading organization in variable star research) has a very lively group of photometric enthusiasts.

The real strength of the book in my opinion is in the second half. North goes into good detail discussing the science behind each of the various types of variables and why we believe they act as they do. This is information that I have found difficult to come by. It is especially useful, as it is quite readable and easy to reference.

All in all I recommend this book highly to anyone doing variable star observing, and I also recommend it in general to any amateur astronomer or arm chair scientist as a good source of information about a branch of science where it is the amateur who contributes the overwhelming amount of data to the field of study.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Place for Amateurs to Consentrate.......2005-02-04

When I saw the title of this book I wondered why something like this would have any appeal to the amateur. The author immediately made this clear, these things have gotten boring to the professional so it is an area where the amateur can still do significant work.

After this, Mr. North spends the rest of the book on equipment, observing, and reporting your results. It's interesting that for this kind of work you don't need the biggest possible scope, in fact he says that you may have to stop down a larger scope to keep from overloading the image.

This book clearly lays out an observation program that just might appeal to a wide range of amateur observers. Within its area, it speaks with authority.

                        Book Description

Variable star astronomy is one field that still allows amateur astronomers to make significant contributions to the advancement of science. Everyone can play a part in variable star observations, using a small telescope, binoculars, or even the naked eye. Written by an award-winning astronomer, Observing Variable Stars provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of variable star observation for the amateur. The book begins with advice on binoculars and telescopes, and on how and when to observe stars effectively. Levy then explains the ways in which to interpret variation in light output in terms of the life of a star, from birth to sometimes violent death. All the major variables are described and classified, as well as other variable objects such as active galaxies, asteroids, comets, and the sun. The book also illustrates how astrophysicists interpret variations in light output in terms of the evolution of stars. Observing Variable Stars contains a seasonal guide to the night sky usable in all latitudes. Throughout, practical observations serve to complement the text, making this an enjoyable, readable introduction to an exciting area of astronomy.
