Not a good book from a student point of view, but serves the purpose.......2005-10-13
I bought this book because it is required for my Financial Accounting course. The book serves its purpose, which is to introduce the world of financial accounting to student like me who has no business background. However, the author has injected a lot of personal opinions into the text, which some are really biased. For example, the author emphasize on the mis-trust between management and investor. There is, to some extent especially after the scandals of Enron and WorldCom, but author has exaggerated it. Also, my professor, a former CFO, pointed out some formulas and pratices on the book have no value in the real world. The plus side is that the text in the book is not hard to understand.

Not even an answer key to the exercises.......2003-03-08
The book is easy to understand, but there should be a solutions manual, or at least an answer key to the exercises. It has been very difficult for me to "learn the mechanics" and "apply the concepts" at the end of each chapter. The pace of the course allows the teacher to solve only 2 or 3 exercises in class, and the book certainly does not make selfstudy easy. Needless to say, that you can't learn financial accounting just by reading. To makes things even worse, a study guide, which does not refer to the same exercises in the book, is out of print.

'Accounting in a Business Context' is an attractively presented text for non-accountants which draws on interesting examples from business life to illustrate various points. However, from the beginner's point of view, it lacks the simple summaries and overviews that could make it a useful reference work and its index is sadly lacking fundamental concepts such as Turnover, Output, Capital, Standard Costs, Shadow Prices, etc. (Interestingly, it does include Tottenham Hotspur - one of the authors' favourite teams I understand!)

This solutions manual is a teaching supplement of Financial Accounting in an Economic Context, 3rd Edition, by Jamie Pratt. Each text chapter (except Chapter 1) concludes with discussion questions, exercises, problems, and cases. This manual contains complete solutions to the exercises and problems and suggested answers to the cases. It was written to be used by students. That is, the solutions are self-explanatory, and answers to essay-type questions are geared toward a student's level of accounting knowledge. Further, care was taken to provide supporting calculations and/or explanations in those cases where the answer may not be obvious. Because Chapter 1 does not include exercises, problem, or cases, this manual begins with Chapter 2. EXERCISES: The exercises usually illustrate a specific concept in a relatively simple manner. The exercises provide an initial test of a student's understanding of an accounting concept or issue. PROBLEMS: The problems generally are more complex than the exercises. They are designed to introduce some of the complexities accountants face and, in some cases, to integrate several accounting concepts into a single problem. CASES: The cases are designed to provide real life examples of accounting issues, and often require students to exercise judgment in formulating an answer. The cases can be used as the basis for class descussion. OTHER RESOURCES: Suggested answers to the discussion questions are located in the Instructor's Manual to Accompany Financial Accounting. That manual also includes time and difficulty charts for the exercises, problems, and cases. Remember that the time estimates are averages and that on any given problem, a student may take longer than the indicated time because of mechanical error, misinterpretation of the information, or lack of understanding of the topic. Good book I bought to catch up on some of the questions you always get, when you have oral exams, and want to explain something difficult in a simple way - this book does the trick.
But, lookout for the errors - not all of the information is totally correct - when you simplify things, often the knowledge gets so compressed, that errors are bound to occur.

All pilots must have such a book like this one. Although it's main purpose is to help in Job's interviews it's also a very good tool to review many topics we don't use to view since our private and comercial pilot's classes. I just would like to see more illustrations and it needs a few corrections too.

Marvellous edition with tons of technical questions nicely ordered by topic. A must have for every (commercial or private) pilot even for people not looking to go on interview straight-away, but just want to brush up their knowledge.
3 remarks:
- I have to agree with the previous reviews on the fact that there are plenty of errors, the least the author/publisher could do, is build a list with errata.
- some more illustrations would have been nice - but it is no reason for not buying this book
- pitty there's no CD with a quiz of the covered questions, but then again: it's a book (not software).
