Good book to point out importance of relationship in Japan.......2000-08-17
This book contains about 23 short stories about Americans and Japanese dealing with each other. However most of the stories deal with American students going to work in scientific labs in Japan. The author was responsible for sending interns from an American University to Japan so she uses a lot of these experiences for her book. This limits the usefulness of the book for other involvement. The author tries to tie the stories together with 4 stages of progress in the relationship but I found it hard to make the connection. The book is very readable. I finished it within 24 hours of receiving it. The stories are each little dramas and I was captivated to find out how each person would do. In sum, a good starter but I think there is much more to the subject.
Lived it and learned it..........2000-06-25
Gercik's book is full of interesting cases demonstrating the differences and difficulties most Americans face when confronting the Japanese. Whether personal or business, these two worlds are diametric - neither truly understands the other. The analyses after each chapter provide insight for a successful Japanese-American relationship. Having myself been an intern in Japan, I can safely say that her words of wisdom are worth reading.

An Exhaustive Collection of Public Personnel Issues.......1998-01-15
I recently read this book for a Ph.D. course, I found it to be quite exhaustive in coverage. From the beginnings of the public sector and the issues of spoils and patronage to the current issues of pay for performance, sexual harrassment and current public work trends, this book covers a great deal of subjects. Perhaps the most notable is the writers' ability to combine historical personnel issues with relative theories to argue current problems and situations. The second full reading really helped to clarify the book's thoughtful issues.

Although George Pataki campaigned for change, most of the human infrastructure he inherited is unlikely to change. The psychological consequences to the people of New York State's government will continue to develop even under new leadership. Frustrations caused by downsizing, reduced budgets, institutional constraints, and stalled careers have led to a variety of very human responses: self-denigrating humor, clinical depression, career compromises, organizational sabotage-and several forms of creativity. This book treats the New York State bureaucracy as a living laboratory, documenting the ways in which people at work for New York State respond to the unavoidable frustrations of government service. An unusual textbook.......2004-11-21
I admit it. I like comprehensive textbooks that cover a subject convincingly. If I had to teach a class in Planetary Science, I'd probably pick the book by de Pater and Lissauer. That's a really good comprehensive text. But this one is good too. And I certainly would enjoy teaching planetary science from either book.
What this book does is cover descriptive planetary science in twelve chapters, covering about 190 pages. These chapters require very little prior knowledge of mathematics, physics, or astronomy.
After that come 42 chapters on very specific topics. These take another 280 pages or so, and they require a little more knowledge of mathematics, physics and astronomy. They also teach some fundamentals of physics and astronomy that prospective planetary scientists need to know. Look at the table of contents to see the topics in this section.
The benefits of this approach are twofold. First, the book can be used to teach a course at a rather elementary level, using mostly the first part of the text. Second, the book avoids the trap of glossing over a large number of topics without explaining any of them really well: the 42 well-chosen topics are presented wonderfully.
The negative side of all this is that some topics are omitted. I'd never think of writing a book like this one. But I'm sure glad Cole and Woolfson did!
