Stories from so many different kinds of companies make it a sure bet that this will be something you can use within your environment. Retention is a common problem but even more making sure the people that stay are motivated and involved is an ongoing challenge - especially in this economy. Her ideas and stories with make a difference in your workplace and in your life!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Proven Ideas for Managers and Supervisors.......2002-08-02

If you want to retain employees, motivate them and care for them. OK, no-brainer. Arguing with that kind of a statement is like being against Motherhood and Apple Pie. So, there has to be something more to this book. And there is . . . after just a little bit of digging.

The book begins with a chapter on the research of what motivates employees. Not much new here. In chapter 2, the author reports the results of her original research into what motivates front-line workers. She surveyed 1200 employees. There is some thought-provoking information here, but nothing dramatic if you've spent much time in this kind of human resources research. For those who have not been exposed to this kind of data, this will be interesting material.

The real meat of this book is the author's C.A.R.E. model for motivating and retaining employees. The acronym represents Creative Communication, Atmosphere and Appreciation for All, Respect and Reason for Being, and Empathy and Enthusiasm. The model is explained, completing Part 1 of the book.

Part 2 consist of Ideas and Stories from Managers, Employees, and Organizations Who Care. Some interesting case studies here. Chapter 6 includes a six page list of ideas from employees. Great checklist of reward opportunities. Chapter 7 presents a brief survey used by one company to gain input from employees about what kind of rewards they prefer.

In Part 3, the book begins to bubble with value. In over 200 pages, Glanz delivers dozens of ideas, explaining each idea and giving real-life examples of how the ideas are actually implemented in a wide range of employer organizations. Chapter after chapter--full of ideas organized in an easy-to-follow format according to the author's C.A.R.E. formula. This section of the book is the real power which earns this book a good rating. The quality of the content and presentation in this section overcomes the weaker beginning.

Four appendices add value, providing self-evaluations for managers (useful for trainers), a sample employee survey, a culture test, and a bibliography. A worthwhile book for managers and supervisors.

        Book Description

John Marsden's Will is the story of an extraordinary legal case. John Marsden himself was a mentally retarded Lancashire gentleman, looked after by his aunt. A servant, George Wright, became the aunt's lover and steward of Marsden's estate, continuing in office even after the aunt's death. When the unmarried Marsden finally died, his will effectively left Hornby Castle to the steward. The will was then contested by the heir at law, Admiral Sandford Tatham, basing his claim on the incapacity of his cousin to understand and therefore endorse a complex will. Because John Marsden's mental state was at the heart of the case, depositions were taken by sides from all who had known him. This evidence allow us not only to follow the case but also to see the personalities and emotions of the men and women involved. In particular, it enables us to see Marsden himself in remarkable detail, from his fruitless attempts to learn his tables to his death from a stroke while in an earth closet. It is very rare for a handicapped person's life in any period before the twentieth century to be traceable in this way.Tatham faced the problem that English courts were loath to overturn a will. The admiral suffered numerous set-backs in his attempt to oust Wright, as the action was fought out in a variety of courts followed by appeals, delay, manoeuvre and intrigue. The prolonged struggle and its outcome was followed by an enthralled public throughout the country.

          Book Description

This text introduces the theoretical framework for describing the quark-gluon plasma, an important new state of matter. The first part of the book is a self-contained introduction to relativistic thermal field theory. Topics include the path integral approach, the real and imaginary time formalisms, fermion fields and gauge fields at finite temperature. The author illustrates useful techniques such as the evaluation of frequency sums and the use of cutting rules. The second part of the book is devoted to recent developments, and gives a detailed account of collective excitations (bosonic and fermionic), showing how they give rise to energy scales that imply a reorganization of perturbation theory. The author also explains the relation with kinetic theory. He works out in detail applications to processes that occur in heavy ion collisions and in astrophysics. Each chapter ends with exercises and a guide to the literature. Graduate students and researchers in nuclear, particle, and astrophysics will benefit from this book.

Before matter as we know it emerged, the universe was filled with the primordial state of hadronic matter called quark-gluon plasma. This hot soup of quarks and gluons is effectively an inescapable consequence of our current knowledge about the fundamental hadronic interactions: quantum chromodynamics. This book covers the ongoing search to verify the prediction experimentally and discusses the physical properties of this novel form of matter. It begins with an overview of the subject, followed by discussion of experimental methods and results. The second half of the book covers hadronic matter in confined and deconfined form, and strangeness as a signature of the quark-gluon phase. Covering the basics as well as more advanced material, it is ideal as an introduction for graduate students, as well as providing a valuable reference for researchers already working in this and related fields.

                Book Description

This book introduces quark gluon-plasma (QGP) as a primordial matter composed of quarks and gluons, created at the time of the "Big Bang". After a pedagogical introduction to gauge theories, various aspects of quantum chromodynamic phase transitions are illustrated in a self-contained manner. The cosmological approach and renormalization group are covered, as well as the cosmological and astrophysical implications of QGP, on the basis of Einstein's equations. Recent developments towards the formation of QGP in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions are also presented in detail.

                  Book Description

The purpose of this volume is to trace the development of the
theoretical understanding of quark-gluon plasma, both in terms of the
equation of state and thermal correlation functions and in terms of
its manifestation in high energy nuclear collisions. Who among us has
not wondered how tall a mountain is on a neutron star, what happens
when matter is heated and compressed to higher and higher densities,
what happens when an object falls into a black hole, or what happened
eons ago in the early universe? The study of quark-gluon plasma is
related in one way or another to these and other thought provoking
questions. Oftentimes the most eloquent exposition is given in the
original papers. To this end a selection is made of what are the
most important pioneering papers in this field. The early 1950s was
an era when high energy multiparticle production in cosmic ray
interactions attracted the attention of some of the brightest minds
in physics, and so it should be no surprise that the first reprinted
papers deal with the introduction of statistical models of particle
production. The quark model arose in the 1960s, while QCD as such
was recognized as the theory of the strong interactions in the
1970's. The behavior of matter at high temperatures and supranuclear
densities became of wide interest in the nuclear and particle physics
communities starting in the 1970s, which is when the concept of
quark-gluon plasma became established. The history of the field has
been traced up to the early 1990s. There are three reasons for
stopping at that point in time. First, most of the key theoretical
concepts and formalisms arose before 1993, although many of them
continue to be developed today and hopefully well into the future.
Second, papers written after 1992 are much more readily available
than those writen before due to the advent of the World Wide Web and
its electronic preprint databases and journals. Finally, in making
this collection of reprints available as hardcopy one is limited in
the number of pages, and some papers in the present selection should
have been deleted in order to make room for post-1993 papers. For the
same reason the subject focus must of necessity be limited, which
means that in this reprint collection two wide subject areas are not
addressed: the behavior of nuclear matter under extreme conditions
is not reported, nor is quark matter in neutron stars. The broad
categories into which the material has been placed, reflect the
diverse studies of quark-gluon plasma and its manifestation. They
are: phase-space models of particle production, perturbative QCD
plasma, lattice gauge theory, fluid dynamics and flow, strangeness,
heavy flavor (charm), electromagnetic signals, parton cascade and
minijets, parton energy loss and jet quenching, Hanbury Brown--Twiss
(HBT) interferometry, disoriented chiral condensates, phase
transition dynamics and cosmology, and color superconductivity. Each
chapter is prefaced by an introduction, which contains a list of
significant papers which is more complete than the reprinted papers,
though by no means exhaustive. It also contains citations to most
relevant papers published up to the date of completion of this volume
(fall 2002). It is hoped that the short reviews will help bring the
reader up to date on the latest developments. The selection of
papers cited in each chapter, and in particular the ones selected for
reprinting, is solely the responsibility of the Editors. It is based
on their best judgement and experience in this field dating back to
the mid-1970s. In order to be reprinted a paper must have been
pioneering in the sense of originality and impact on the field.
Generally they have been cited over a hundred times by other papers
published in refereed journals. The final selection was reviewed and
discussed among the Editors repeatedly. Just because a paper is not
included does not mean they do not know of it or do not have a high
regard for it. All of the papers cited or reprinted are original
research contributions. There are three other types of publications
listed. The first is a compilation of books. The second is a list
of reviews, many of which contain a significant amount of original
material. The third is a list of the proceedings of the series of
Quark Matter meetings, the primary series of international
conferences in this field that is attended by both theorists and
                  experimentalists.

                        Book Description

This set of lectures deals with the transition from nuclear matter to quark matter. The reader will learn not only about the theory of quark-gluon plasmas but also how they are obtained in the laboratory through heavy-ion collisions or where they can be found in astrophysical objects such as compact stars. The book fills a gap between well-known textbook material and the research literature and is thus perfectly suited for postgraduate students who wish to enter this field, for lecturers looking for advanced material for their courses and for scientists in search of a modern source of reference on these topics.

                          Book Description

Nuclear and particle physicists are searching for evidence of a new state of elementary matter with the constituents of nucleons and quarks, roaming freely in a deconfined state known as the quark-gluon plasma. To create the required conditions for this new phase to occur in the laboratory, relativistic heavy ion experimental facilities have been developed where heavy nuclei can collide at highly relativistic energies. Such collisions have the potential to provide, albeit for a very short time duration, the high energy density and temperature within an extended elementary volume, allowing the formation of this new phase. This text, co-authored by many experts, provides an elementary introduction and also surveys current experimental accomplishments. Many students participated in the write up of the lectures which are thus at an accessible level. An introduction to the research program in Latin America is offered in the spirit of the Pan-American Advanced Study Institute.
