      Book Description

This volume provides high quality academic research on the ongoing, and sometimes heated, public policy debate over the benefits of bank derivatives and trading activities. This debate is centered on the potential adverse systemic effects of these activities. To date, relatively little of what is known of the economic causes and consequences of these activities is the result of scientific scrutiny. Firstly, the volume documents the trends in trading activities and derivatives usage. Secondly, this book discusses the economic motivation for, and economic consequences of banks' derivatives and trading activities. Thirdly, the regulatory options and their potential consequences are evaluated. Recommendations for a reasoned supervisory response, based on the analyses in this book, conclude the volume.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good look into the volitile world of banking Derivatives.......2002-03-14

Barry Schachter does a wonderful job of compiling the pros and cons of the complex derivative market.

This book is complete with real world data on trading activities, the usage of derivatives, and the possible systemic risk associated with these practices.

I enjoyed this books straight forward and easy to understand format which made it simple to evaluate the issues facing our complex banking system.

This book could easily have gotten a five star review from me if it wasn't for my one and only complaint.

My only complaint has to do with the date of publication, not with any of the information (or lack of information) presented in this book.

I am curious how the author would view more recent issues including the possible clasped of several major Japanese banks, Enron, and the current crisis in Argentina.

From the supplier: Sen Phil Gramm, Senate Banking Committee chairman, plans several legislative bills to modernize the financial services sector. At a press conference, he said that he intends to introduce a major securities reform bill as well as a bill concerning derivatives. Speculations are ripe that the Gramm bill will definitely affect matters dealing with corporate accounting while not really affecting the functions of the Financial Accounting Standards Board.

                      Book Description

In this extensive revision of his best-selling text, Irwin Goldstein, a leader in the training field, teams up with Kevin Ford, well-known for his work in "the learning organization," to provide readers with a framework for examining and establishing viable training programs in education, business, and government. Capturing the excitement of training research and systems issues, the author discusses training as it occurs in real organizations. Part I focuses on societal training issues, how organizations conduct assessments to understand their training needs, and significant issues in learning and instruction. Part II focuses on the evaluation process, and Part III reviews training programs and procedures.

                                Book Description

Nanocrystalline materials is the name given to three-dimensional ultrafine, polycrystalline microstructures. These microstructures give rise to chemical and physical size effects which are of increasing scientific and technological interest. This book describes the development of a chemical vapor synthesis method for the production of nanocrystalline ceramic powders. The development of the microstructure during sintering is studied and the influence of the synthesis parameters on the structure and properties of the nanocrystalline ceramics from the atomic to the microstructural level is investigated. The emerging unified view, from powder synthesis and ceramic processing to structural characterization and determination of properties, provides a detailed understanding of nanocrystalline materials and enables a precise control of the quality of the final products.

                                  Book Description

Nanostructured materials have at least one dimension in the nanometer range. They became a very active research area in solid state physics and chemistry in recent years with anticipated applications in various domains, including solar cells, electronics, batteries and sensors.

Nanocrystalline metals and oxides are dense polycrystalline solids with a mean grain size below 100 nm. This book is intended to give an overview on selected properties and applications of nanocrystalline metals and oxides by leading experts in the field. The first three chapters provide a very complete theoretical treatment of thermodynamics and atom/ion transport for nanocrystalline materials. The following chapters are experts' views on the development of experimental characterization techniques for nanocrystalline solids with emphasis on electroceramic materials.

Nanocrystalline Metals and Oxides is intended for a broad range of readers, foremost chemists, physicists and materials scientists. Theoretical physicists and chemists will certainly also profit from this book. The electroceramics and solid state ionics community are particularly addressed, given the main interests of the editors.
