I used this in my accounting classes at Cedarville University. It's pretty useful to see how all the basics come together in an accounting package like this. It's got a ton of good examples and isn't hard to use at all.

Book Description

How Do You Ensure that Employees Are Doing the Right Things?

Many of us ask, "What does it take to do a job well?" and stop there. But there's more to it than that.

What skills and knowledge are necessary for effectiveness in a certain job? Does the employee have the appropriate skills and knowledge, or is some kind of training necessary? Are these job expectations aligned with the culture and strategy of the organization as a whole?

These questions are essential to performance improvement efforts. And competency modeling is designed to help you find answers to questions such as these.

A competency model is . . . a descriptive tool that identifies the skills, knowledge, personal characteristics, and behaviors needed to effectively perform a role in the organization and help the business meet its strategic objectives.

From the authors of the best-selling book The Art and Science of 360? Feedback comes this guide to the design and implementation of competency models.

"The authors have taken competency modeling out of the domain of academics and social scientists by creating a practical 'how-to' work that clearly and simply explains the steps in developing and using competency models. I recommAnd this book to anyone whose job includes the pinpointing and sharpening of relevant competencies, for themselves or for others."
--Scott B. Parry, chairman, Training House

"Lucia and Lepsinger have demystified competency models and put in the hands of the reader a blueprint for developing meaningful recruiting, performance measurement, and succession planning systems. They succeed with a straightforward, pragmatic style, using actual examples that make the book an easy read."
--Frank Ashen, senior vice president, New York Stock Exchange

5 out of 5 stars A very good place to start.......2007-03-24

If you are new to this topic, you will get a good grounding of why and how you should go about developing a competency framework for your organisation. This book is thorough, to the point and easy to follow.

4 out of 5 stars A good coverage of the field of competency models.......2001-06-26

Competency Models have become a must for an up-to-date HRM system - I have been helping companies to build this kind of models since 1996. These models make great tools for selection, training and development, appraisal and succession planning. Unfortunately, until I came accross this book, I found that most of the reference works to this field are quite unaccessible, not the kind I would put into the hands of a newcomer. This is a practical book, showing why competency models are important and helping the reader to go through the complete process of setting up such a system, including a chapter on how to sell the idea to others in the organisation - I wish some of the people I work with would have read this book before, that would have smoothened the problems that are caused if these steps aren't followed well. The book also shows how to transform your competence model into a 360° feedback questionnaire. It was the first time I came accross a book explaining how to do that! The only area that I found a bit weak is the compentency-interview (both for building the model, als doing behavior-based interviews for recruiting), but maybe that's a bias coming from my own expertise in that domain (my book "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence" includes a full chapter on how to ask the right questions).

Conclusion - whether you know about Competency Models or not - add this book to your library! And if you are a consultant in the field of competency models, this is a book you might recommend to your customers.

Patrick E. Merlevede -- co-author of "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence"

4 out of 5 stars Very readable overview.......2000-04-25

This is a perfect choice for the novice reader who is trying to get a basic understanding of the whys and wherefores of compentency models. It's very readable book and not nearly as dry as I might have expected. In particular, the authors' copious use of real-world examples, cases and models is extremely helpful. I even got some great ideas for project management that I'll be able to apply broadly in my work, regardless of whether or not my organization undertakes a competency modeling project.

My only criticism is that the book focuses exclusively on CMs in a HRM context; there is no real discussion of industry-scale models, which was my main reason for reading the book. Nevertheless, a very good resource for a beginner.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone!.......1999-10-26

Well written. Reader-friendly without sacrificing depth of content. I am not an HR specialist, but I still find this book to be very useful. Provides me with knowledge on competency and how to build a competency model for my own company.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" reading guide !!!.......1999-09-18

"Competency models that identify the skills, knowledge, and characteristics needed to perform a job have been in use for more than three decades. In the last five years, interest in them and their potential to help staffing and development efforts has increased dramatically among our client group. We believe this interest will continue to grow over the next few years due to three key, related trends-intensified competition, aggressive cost management and downsizing, and the proliferation of 360-degree feedback system (A. D. Lucia & R. Lepsinger / Preface xiii)."

In this invaluable study authors

* define what a competency model is, describe its components, and discuss some of their broad, general applications.

* examine how competency models can be applied within selection, training and development, appraisal, and succession planning systems to support an organization's business objectives.

* discuss establishing the performance criteria with which your organization measures success to better focus your data collection and analysis.

* describe specific action steps to follow during the development of the competency model from scratch.

* discuss various methods of data collection and how they can be used to increase the likelihood of identifying the knowledge, skills, and characteristics required to succeed in the job.

* describe the process of creating competency-based selection, training and development, appraisal, and succession planning systems.

* discuss the methods for converting the model into the necessary formats or tools to integrate the competencies into each step of human resource management.

This study is a "must" reading guide for HR professionals and line managers. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The best book we have found.......2005-12-16

This is a great book for studying (and teaching) about the solar system and the stars. My 9 year old read this every night until the day we had to return it to the library. I bought it right away after that. Amazing photographs - very attention getting. Great for all ages.

    5 out of 5 stars bookcritic.......2003-06-16

This book is beautifully illustrated and presented. Intended for my 4-yr-old, even my 2-yr-old now knows the names of most of the planets and understands their orientation. I would recommend this book to any and every parent.

    4 out of 5 stars universal appeal.......2000-06-09

This is a great buy for the pre-teen with a brimming curiosity. Comphrehensive and straightforward it made me want to do some traveling of my own! I especially liked how the information is presented in an easy to read-easy to grasp style for kids, yet doesn't condescend. I plan on giving this to my nephew in the hopes that some of his neverending questions about the universe will be answered!

This unique atlas is the first to present maps of the structure that exists in the distribution in space of the nearby galaxies. The atlas has three groups of maps. The first group illustrates the distribution of 2,367 known galaxies on the plane of the sky. The second group is a representation of the three-dimensional characteristics of the same group of galaxies. The third suite of maps situates the nearby galaxies within the structure on a much larger cosmic scale.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2005-12-15

My parents had this book on our shelf since before I was born, and when I was old enough to pick it up and read it, I fell in love. Even if some of the text was beyond my comprehension, the illustrations were more than enough to capture my imagination and drive my interest in astronomy. As I got older and could understand more of my reading, the book became that much more important and influential for me. I used it as a resource for several reports through out elementary and middle school.

Sure, by this time, some of the information contained in the book is outdated and many new discoveries have been made, but the information that is there is a great resource for people of any age. I only remembered the book just now as I study for my Black Holes and Cosmic Evolution final, and how much I'd like to take a glance at it for some outside information!

5 out of 5 stars My Childhood Memories.......2005-02-08

This book was my favorite growing up. I would take it everywhere: to grandma's house; on doctor's visits. I had at the age of three! I still have parts of it. (I had to tear it apart when my cousins needed me to fax pages from it for their homework projects.)This book gives you a look at how we as Americans have advance upto the 1980's. The pictures are amazing and there is mythological information for each plantet and the sun (Apollo). It even gives scientic information like physics and math. There's a section on men and women scientist who's contributions make our world a better place.

      5 out of 5 stars Jarringly beautiful.......2004-09-13

Besides my own copy, I have never seen another one of these books. It's a shame really, because this book combines information and illustration in the way only National Geographic can. The nine planets of our solar system make up the majority of text material here, which goes a long way in preserving the shelf life of this book.

Our Universe begins with a brief history of astronomy entitled from 'Sun Gods to Gamma Rays' and is written in a manner accessible for all ages. Gallant then proceeds to examine our solar system piece by piece, beginning with the sun and then the orbiting planets. Each planet is given its own chapter, complete with graphs of orbital patterns, atmospheric qualities and actual photographs if available. Stunning artwork is peppered throughout, and in my opinion makes this book a treasure.

Finally, Our Universe includes chapters on comets, asteroids and meteors, and the various galaxies outside our own Milky Way. It's a book that everyone can enjoy. Adults might learn something new, and the artwork will garner interest in kids to learn more about our universe.

5 out of 5 stars Our Universe - It Puts the Best Inside the Mind's Eye.......2004-03-13

Although fundamentally humanist, this book's presentation of the glories of creation is too perfect in color, imagination, tone of wonder and awe, and development-as-you-read to ignore. It was a major influence throughout my childhood on my love for science and what the rules of the universe are and what may lie in the future long after all of us are dead.
From Michael Collins' introduction through the history of man's understanding of creation to the section on the stars beyond the galaxy, "Our Universe" will draw you in and MAKE you love astronomy.

      5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!.......2001-06-04

National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe is THE best solar system book. I never really thought anything of the Universe, and the planets, until I found this book! It is amazing! It answers questions my science teacher couldn't answer. It gives detailed, understandable information, with beautiful pictures! After reading this, I can name some of the planet's moons, and how many a planet has! I feel like I know tons more than I ever did about the solar system, and Our Universe!!

There are many atlases showing features on the surface of the earth, but this book is the only one (in late 1998, at least) to cover the whole universe. Patrick Moore, who has hosted BBC Radio's popular The Sky at Night program for more than 40 years, gives straightforward, though not simplistic, explanations of astronomical objects of every order of magnitude. He includes charts of every mapped body in the solar system (except Earth), as well as maps and guides to every constellation.

Throughout this encyclopedic work, Moore emphasizes information likely to be useful to amateur astronomers. He provides better coverage of comets and variable stars than do most general works, for instance, because these are areas where amateurs can make important observations. Although he includes a number of gorgeously colored pictures from the Hubble space telescope and other top-flight observatories, Moore retains a focus on what you yourself might be able to see. An excellent single-volume reference, Atlas of the Universe is also a good starting point for your own exploration of the heavens. --Mary Ellen Curtin

            Book Description

Put the Universe at your fingertips with this dramatic and comprehensive look at the sky. Richly illustrated with hundreds of recent photographs and images from ground-based telescopes, the Hubble Space Telescope, and interplanetary spacecraft, Atlas of the Universe is a definitive reference to the stars, the planets and their moons, and the universe. In addition to a beautiful and informative portrait of the cosmos, this book provides superb star charts with sound advice on practical observing. The book guides its reader through the universe in seven sections: exploring the universe, the solar system, the Sun, the stars, the universe, star maps, and practical astronomy. In addition to a beautiful and informative portrait of the cosmos, this book provides superb star charts with sound advice on practical observing. This is a highly suitable guide for amateurs with telescopes who want to explore the richness of astronomical knowledge and to learn the beauty of the night sky. Patrick Moore is one of the world's outstanding popularizers of astronomy and can count fifty years of experience presenting astronomy to general readers. His extensive body of work includes Exploring the Night Sky with Binoculars (Cambridge 1989 and 1996) and The Cambridge Guide to Stars and Planets (1997).

            5 out of 5 stars A brief comment.......2006-02-27

The great Sir Patrick Moore has done more to popularize astronomy and to explain the mysteries of the universe to us mortals than probably any other professional astronomer in history. I was weaned on his books as a junior high school student back in the mid 60s, and I continued to be a fan of his books for the next two decades, minoring in astronomy in college partly as a result of his influence (back in the days when no-one bothered to minor in things :-)).

This book is an updated version of his original book from 1970. It includes the Voyager photos of the planets and their moons that benefitted from those probes and with additional text discussing those developments. Revised material on deep space objects like galaxies and quasars is also included, since much as been learned in the past 30 years on those topics, as well as on cosmology in general.

Moore's prose reminds me of the old days of reading his books, as it hasn't changed much in 40 years. It may sound a little old-fashioned stylistically to today's ears but there is no better writer and explainer on the subject of astronomy today just as he was 40 years ago. I'm glad to find Moore is still working, and also, I noted he's been knighted in the intervening years since I last read any of his books. Here's to Moore and his contribution to science writing and to bringing astronomy to the masses.

A useful guide that takes a crack at actually telling you where Star City is, for example, in the form of maps.

It is not just confined to earth, of course, as it looks at all the groovy places you can go in inner, outer and magical space, not to mention other weird and wonderful sites.

              Fun.
