Your Guide to the Sky.......2007-01-09

We enjoy star gazing, and this is a perfect book for learning about what we're looking at. Very well written and very easy for a "novice" to follow without getting too "scientific".

An Excellent book to guide you through the galaxy.......2005-03-05

I loved this book, as did my father who is now 87 years of age. We just want Mr. Shaffer to write an updated book so we can see the constellations in the future years ahead!!

A great place to start.......2002-09-07

If you're new to backyard astronomy and are seeking a guide, here's the ticket. This covers all the bases, from the moon, sun, planets, and constellations to the locations of deep-sky objects, from lunar and solar observations to how to pick and set up the appropriate telescope (good information from a man who has designed award-winning telescopes). Shaffer starts at the beginning with the basic layout of the night sky and continues into greater detail without getting overly technical or confusing the neophyte. Every topic is presented in a friendly and engaging manner, with touches of dry humor, that eases the unfamiliar into the techniques of backyard astronomy without overwhelming them. Along the way he adds details about general scientific concepts as needed (such as explaining photons and spectrums) and includes sky maps, charts, graphs and other things to help guide the reader.An altogether excellent guide.

LOOKING AT THE OUTER LIMITS.......2001-01-12

If you enjoyed the "Star Wars" and "Star-Trek" films, and your visits to your local planetarium, you're in for a treat. This book helps you uncover stars, comets, galaxies, nebulas, planets on your own time. Equipped with the maps, photographs and the space parameters given you in this book, you can step out at night in your own back yard, gaze at the sky and chart your own course. No rocket ships included. You won't need them to apply this excellent handbook to the heavens.

nice, simple, clear beginner's guide.......2000-04-11

This is one of those books from which you can take as much or as little as you want. Shaffer is not intent on making an in-depth astronomer out of everyone (although if that's what you're bound for, this book will be a fine first leg up). His presentation is clear and friendly, good for browsing, for reference, or for reading straight through. Use it however suits you.

The first three chapters cover basics -- longitude and latitude and why they matter; how to read sky maps; paths of the sun, moon, and planets; basic terms; how telescopes work; etc. These might sound like intimidating topics but they're covered in just enough depth and not a bit more (e.g. "A Very Short Primer on Light").

A nice feature is on page two, a section titled "If You're in a BIG Hurry, What to Read First" (i.e. what parts of this book).

After discussion of telescopes, including how to choose one and what to do with it, there are five chapters on sky-watching. First there's the close stuff: artificial satellites, the moon... and then there's the farther away stuff: planets, stars, nebulas, groups of galaxies.

There's a sky map for each month; the maps are easy to read. Beginner that I was, with this book I was able to identify a few stars I'd noticed several nights in a row -- turned out to be one side of Orion. The fact that what I saw in the sky was recognizable on the map here is a big plus.

This is a book that will last you long past the very-beginner stage.

Anyone who regularly buys books will know that the blurb on a book's cover isn't always an accurate guide to what lies within. The information on the inside flaps, for example, is usually written by some PR whizz completely unknown to the author. Publishing houses employ staff to work solely on book covers and some even discourage staff from actually contacting authors. They are experts in packaging a book for sale but oblivious to the wildness of their claims and the factual clangers they drop in their efforts.

See the Stars by Ken Croswell, however, is exactly what its cover, flaps, and publicity material claim it to be, and then some more. It is a "how-to" book aimed at readers over eight which really does get them outside, looking up, and finding the constellations described.

Twelve double-page spreads feature a constellation for each month of the year. On the right page is a "where and when to look" box, a line drawing, and a description of the star pattern; opposite is a large and stunning celestial photo of the constellation in question. Extra information worked into the text means that by the end of the book you've not only learnt twelve constellations in detail but also about stellar temperatures and colours, double stars, the zodiac, the Milky Way, and the planets.

The choice of constellations is no surprise: Croswell has picked the best and brightest star patterns in the sky. All twelve are ideal for readers between latitudes 30 and 50 degrees north. The beauty of the book is that Croswell has restricted himself to just the twelve, giving the reader a feeling of real achievement on seeing these constellations.

A whole year would have been needed to test and review this book thoroughly but two months was the maximum allowed by the Editors. So, with only a Cub Scout Astronomy Badge between them, my 10 and 12 year olds tested it out. They found their way around the book and then the sky with ease. Yet they weren't the first to do this. As Croswell wrote the book, his instructions were field-tested by his non-astronomical editor, then the editor's colleagues, friends, and various offspring. This thorough and rare testing of the text and its subsequent tweaking before publication has really paid off.

Croswell has a friendly, easy style which is already familiar to American readerships. He has introduced children to astronomy through articles and radio scripts written just for them, has authored three books for adults, and is a regular contributor to magazines and newspapers. See the Stars has a "no frills" approach to its subject and provides simple, straightforward help. The book looks a touch old-fashioned next to the UK design-led factual books produced for children in the past ten years. But for a book that really works, choose this one.

A polished and educational observing guide.......2001-11-14

This is one of the best introductory observing guides for amateur astronomers that I have seen. Written for owners of small to medium telescopes, this book contains a diverse selection of objects for virtually every constellation in the sky. Many of the southern constellations are included as well for those of you lucky enough to live under those spectacular skies.

I spent the last month reading through this book during my lunch breaks and used it for a few observing sessions with a 12" scope. I plan to use it for many more! The artwork, photographs, and sketches in this work are a pleasure to view. This is a keeper.

The observing notes about each object are very well written. Some of the science may be slightly off (i.e. distances), since this book was written in the 80's, but this doesn't affect what you see in the eyepiece which is the main focus of Eicher's notes.

The book consists of many four-page chapters. One or two constellations are covered in each chapter. This consists of a page of outstanding photographs, a nice illustration of the constellation depicted as a mythological figure, discussion and observing notes, a map of the region, eyepiece sketches, and a chart with some basic details on all objects covered in the text (i.e. position, size, magnitude, etc.).

The only negative thing I found is that many of the objects that Eicher discusses in the text are outside the boundaries of the included maps! The maps themselves aren't too detailed so a good star atlas is an absolute must if you use this book during an observing session. Many of the objects surveyed are quite dim and require a bit of starhopping, which the included maps are inadequate for.

This book is perfect for research. It has information on all the constellations and in-depth picture of each. It doesn't have a mythological summary of each, but the pictures are fantastic. Each star of the constellation is described.

A good but complicated book!.......2000-03-25

Planetwatch is a very good book with many interesting experiments, from tracing the moon to viewing Jupiter. The experiments range in level from beginner to expert. I like many of the experiments, but even the beginner ones are sometimes very complicated for anyone that has never tried astronomy before. It is still a very good book, though. It shares a lot of information about the solar system and makes you aware of what possible things an amateur astronomer could see. Overall, it is a very good astronomy book for beginners and advanced alike.

Excellent Astronomy Guide/Hand Book.......2000-02-26

This 1999 handbook is so well done, there's no close second. The VERY BEST PART is that next to many of the charts are FULL COLOR pictures of the messier object within that chart. With each chart (I counted 93?) is a detailed description of the constellation and the objects of interest that it contains. Although I don't like the binding, this book is so well done, so colorful, so detailed in what it contains (I counted 144 NGC objects), that I'd add this to your MUST have book list (but not to be your ONLY book). You will not regret the purchase of THIS book. This book is a good reference, yet can be read like a novel. The beginner who reads through this book will no longer be a beginner.
