Customer Reviews:
A must for any manager..........2007-08-09
This is a great book. I've learned alot as a first time manager. I've also loaned it out to a friend who was working on a "culture in the workplace" project. She loved it too. Whether you are new to management or have been in the seat for a while, you should read it.
Hope you enjoy it!
Bec oming a Successful Manager.......2007-04-03
The book was helpful and gave me some good ideas for managing and also for what managers expect from me.
Very Touchy-Feely, Love Thy Neighbor.......2004-11-18
I am a new manager in a very large company. I purchased this book and another to help me learn how to deal with people, especially the ones with whom I used to work that now work for me. The book reads like a self-help book for a 10 year old with review questions at the end of each chapter. Also, it is very touchy-feely. The author wants you to treat your subordinates like your very best friends. I found some good pointers from the book, though not very many.
Great Book for New Managers!.......2002-04-20
What a great book for new managers! So many people suddenly placed in a management position feel shot out of a cannon. They are completely unprepared for the new responsibilities that face them, the new dynamics they'll encounter in the workplace, and the stresses that can so easily result. Grossman and Parkinson give wonderful, useful advice that is wise and practical at the same time. I recommend this book highly!
Tom Morris
Practical, Informative and Insightful.......2002-03-08
This is a must-have book for all new managers, those who hope to be managers one day, and even managers who have been managing for years. The information provided in this short and easy-read book is even applicable to relationships outside of work - your spouse, children and friends.
The authors take you through a series of topics that make you appreciate why 'great' managers are great. These topics can be viewed as good ole common sense, but unfortunately one realizes how often we don't demonstrate common sense. The book is full of questions - situations that all managers encounter, along with several effective ways of handling each situation so that every wins - your company, your employess and you, the manager - good practical techniques that everyone can put to use.
This is not the kind of book to rest on your libary shelf. Read it and pass it on.

tediously dull writing and uninteresting layout.......2007-03-09
A required textbook for my kid's college class. I have an MBA and am usually interested in anything having to do with business. I thumbed through this very expensive book and gratefully closed it after slogging through a few numbing pages. If you're a business teacher thinking about using it for a class, do the world a favor, put your copy out of its misery and send it to goodwills.

Just the Right Information.......2001-02-24
I am interviewing next week for my first management position after being a High School teacher for 11 years. I enjoyed the book and found a lot of valuable material. I was also able to see many of the priciples and suggestions in the book modeled by the better administrators at my school.
There is a lot of business-oriented material in the book that won't necessarily apply to my new (prospective) position as an outdoor-science school Program Director. Still it may be valuable some day and the examples served to clarify the material presented.
The book was a fast read and I made checkmarks in the margin so that I can review the material. I read it mainly to help me come up with ways I would handle situations that may be posed to me as part of my interview, and I think that it served this purpose well.

Book Description
The core of this practical book comprises ten "laws" of leadership that will provoke you to look at some old problems in new ways, check your assumptions, and learn more about yourself. After discussing each law, the author poses questions to help you reflect on the key ideas and apply what you have learned to your own work situations. You will develop new insights that will help you to not only cope with but also actually enjoy the challenges of leadership
Customer Reviews:
Couldn't be better..........2005-06-27
One of the best management helps I've ever read. Practical and light-hearted, dealing with the real issues of management, prioritized and yet written in an easily accessible format, "Leading Others Managing Yourself" couldn't be better. I regularly recommend it to anyone who has anything to do with the craft of dealing with that most difficult aspect of any profession: people!
A lot of insight in a brief, well structured book.......2005-02-08
McGinn has done a great job of doing something that good strategists do: seeing close things at a distance and distant things closely. Using a concise, understandable framework he reviews ten basic laws of leadership. He provides excellent overviews and these are shaped in ways which lead directly to useful action. This is not book of theory unachored by reality nor is it a tedious series of practical tips which fail to hang together.
The book is a deceptively quick read because it not only provides immediate ideas for action it also gets below the surface. Some examples: "There Is No Right Way: The First Law of Management" "If Everyone Is Doing It, Either It Is the Wrong thing, Or It Is Too Late: The Second Law of Strategy" A number of chapters have useful summary tables such as "Figure 2. Knowing Versus Doing" which helps the reader to understand that doing what is right means that the leader needs to consider those things that are easy to do and hard to do and then to look and how they intersect with knowing what is right as a function of the things that are easy to know and hard to know.
This book can be useful for first line supervisors preparing for greater responsibility, middle managers working to deal with day to day challenges and senior managers wanting a broader, more conceptual framework to use when evaluating their work and its impact in the context of the overall organization. It should be on a leader's bookshelf for repeated use and sharing with others in the organization. It is a gem.
A Box of 64.......2005-01-19
Remember your first box of 64 crayons? It opened up great new possibilities. Sure, your box of 8 had carried you a long way --but 64 . . . ah! . . . the possibilities.
Most business books are a 'box of 8'. Peter McGinn's Leading Others, Managing Yourself is a 'box of 64'. Yes,it includes some tried-and-true colors (navy blue/Doing the Right Thing and forest green/If You Can't Measure It, You Can't Improve It) but it also has many unexpected and brilliant lessons (periwinkle/If Everyone Is Doing It, Either It Is the Wrong Thing or It Is Too Late; magenta/The Platnum Rule; even purple pizzazz/Seven 2X2 Think Tables.
And, the book is laid out like a box of crayons -- with shades of the same color, or in this case, elements of the same basic law/principle, grouped together. That makes the book easy to read and easy to use.
I give the book FIVE STARS -- gold stars that is.

Book Description
It Takes Two presents a fresh perspective on the relationship between manager and managed, telling not how to manage your boss but how to manage yourself in the relationship with your boss.
The author's unique perspective on self-awareness and personal development can be applied to a wide variety of organizations. Based on extensive quantitative and qualitative research--including a base of more than seven hundred managers and interviews and self-analysis data with dozens of managers--this book maps the patterns of people's responses to authority relations and provides guidance on how to change yourself and the relationship to be more effective, satisfying, and productive. Drawing on examples from both business and politics--including such notable political figures as Oliver North and Ronald Reagan--Gene Boccialetti describes the three orientations of management relationships--accommodating, autonomous, adversarial--and shows how to identify one's own style and determine how well and under what circumstances it does and doesn't work.

Book Description
In the mainstream American imagination, the 1950s were an era of conformity when women strove to be perfect middle-class suburban housewives a la June Cleaver. But in reality, the 1950s were the decade of The Kinsey Report and The Bell Jar, of Cold War Communists and civil rights activism, and change for women.
In this engaging collection, cultural commentators explore the 1950s from the center to the margins-from Norman Mailer to Peyton Place, from suburban porn to Patricia Highsmith, and from Soviet women to lesbians in post-Nazi Berlin. Fascinating reviews and interviews include Alicia Ostriker on Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, Diane Wood Middlebrook on Willem De Kooning, and Ivy Meeropol on her documentary about her grandparents Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.

Gender Justice, Development, and Rights
ASIN: 0801883741 |
Book Description
This interdisciplinary collection from the Human Rights Quarterly brings together in a single volume nineteen of the most compelling articles written on women's human rights issues. For the past twenty-five years, Human Rights Quarterly has been a leading publisher of important work in human rights research, exploring the fundamental nature of human rights as defined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. By providing decision makers with insight into complex human rights issues, the journal helps to define national and international human rights policy.
This special issue focuses specifically on the challenges that women face and the efforts by individuals and organizations alike to ensure the protection of women under international law. The articles are organized into five sections that discuss the history and evolution of women's human rights, religion, violence, economic rights, and reproductive rights. The essays address such topics as the rights of Middle Eastern women, rape camps in the former Yugoslavia, and abortion law in Ireland.

Book Description
This special issue explores the devastated terrain where the peculiar form of East Asian colonial modernity and militarism intersects with gender and sexuality. The contributors suggest that in building the modern nation-state, through the inversion of public and domestic space, Japan created a state-administered system of licensed prostitution within itself and its colonies. The “Comfort Women” system that drafted over 200,000 Asian women into sexual slavery for the Japanese military during the Pacific War, is a testimony of the racial and gender contradictions of the Japanese Empire. While the essays in the issue attempt to untangle this grotesque history—repressed and misrepresented in the name of nationalism in both Japan and its former colonies—they also question the nationalistic inclination of the movement that aims to reaudit this history.
Extending its interrogation to the Cold War power dynamics and contingent economic development that have contributed to the silencing of the colonial past in East Asia, these essays also examine “the Tokyo Trials” and the discourses of postwar compensation and apology. They not only reveal the capitalistic incentives behind the nominalism of compensation but also unmask the Janus face of humanism, which claims to be universal while excluding Asian women from the category of humanity.
This exceptional collection includes artwork by two Korean comfort women, Tok-kyong Kang and Sun-dok Kim, as well as pieces by Japanese artists and Korean American artists. Other features include a narrative composed of several interviews with comfort women and a conversation between the Nobel laureate Kenzaburo Oe of Japan and South Korean dissident poet Chi-ha Kim.

A must-have.......2002-02-19
This beautifully presented large hardback is actually a series of essays covering the story of the search for Longitude from the 16th century to the 19th. The essays deal with a range of subjects from the mathematical to the absurd, from astronomy to cartography and has 4 excellent appendices. The book is well laid out with both black&white and color photography in a manner that means you don't need to be a student of the sea of chronology to understand it. A good book to have on the shelf.
review.......2002-01-18
Excellent book focused on the Longitude act's of the 1700's. The primary emphasis is on the two technologies Lunar-distance and chonometer for determining longitude with a precision under 1 degree. The relative percentages are: 50% chonometer, 30% lunar distance, 10% Jupiter's moons, 10% general history pre-1600's. I gave it four stars instead of 5 because I thought the book was going to be a balanced discussion ( i.e. equal time)encompassing all methods of determining longitude irrespective of a 1 degree precision. All that said, I would still recommend the book to anyone interested in the topic.
Most comprehensive coverage.......2000-07-26
This review is top notch and comprehensive. It's the book of choice to cover the background and the technology. I'm not a watch or clock fanatic, but I slam dunked this whole book in just a couple days; a 15 hour Qantas flight kept me captive. I wish there was more discussion on the nature of astronomy and how the clocks were calibrated. I want to read up on octants, sextants and basic navigation now. This book deserves five stars. The A&E four hour documentary, "Longitude", this month also deserves high marks. If someone knows of a good read on navigating with astronomy that's more layman oriented, please email me (thanks).

This book considers the problem of longitude from a number of viewpoints. While Dava Sobel's book concentrated on the Harrison/Maskelyne controversy, this volume uses historical, mathematical and geographic viewpoints. What is impressive is the genius, dedication and tenacity of the Renaissance scientists. They may not have had GPS but they knew what they were doing.
