Book Description
Why do so many Americans-working harder and longer and with less security than ever before-question the price of success demanded by today's hot-wired economy? Can you work and still have a life? Paula Rayman says, is yes. In this timely book, she offers a powerful blueprint for transforming the world of work, family, and community that is the downside of our relentlessly competitive culture. In this much-needed wake-up call to corporate America, Rayman shows why companies must go beyond the bottom line to survive and thrive. Drawing on her experience as a leading advocate for a more responsive workplace, she demonstrates how companies can organize for profit, productivity, and the desire of workers for a more rewarding quality of life. In a win-win agenda for changing outmoded organizations, she demonstrates convincingly that all successful transformations create workplaces that respect the need for dignity: security, self-respect, and the time and freedom to care for family and community.
Customer Reviews:
Paula Rayman is an idiot.......2007-01-06
Paula is a name-dropping, pretentious, self-serving author who pretends to be an economist but is really neither a capable quantitative nor a particularly insightful ethnographic scholar.
Ellen Ostrow,.......2002-11-25
I wish this book was required reading for every attorney I coach - and the managing partners of every law firm. Paula Rayman presents an compelling argument for law firms to examine
the consequences of their bottom line approach to doing business.
The billable hours culture, which places greatest value on overwork and heroic individualism, hurts families, diminishes the care of children and elders, reduces the possibilities for the success of women attorneys, limits the dignity of lawyers, makes lawyers abandon their civic responsibilities - and ultimately erodes the fabric of our society.
Rayman provides a sophisticated social, economic and moral analysis of the problem and offers both conceptual solutions and specific examples of their success. Rayman offers wise
counsel to the counselors.

Book Description
This book brings to the management of nonprofit organizations and public sector organizations the kind of concepts that have long been applied to commercial firms. Management thinking has long been concentrated on the problems of managing commercial organizations. Authors Sandler and Hudson set out to study the best managed nonprofit and government organizations and to determine what they did to achieve their success. The authors found that there is a close similarity between the management thinking of these organizations and that of profit-making firms. Each type of firm defined who their customers were and how to best serve them. They looked for ways of selling their particular product. They formed partnerships with other organizations in pursuit of their ultimate goals. They encouraged innovation among their workers. They diffused power down through the organizations to the lowest level possible. They created an atmosphere that made their workers feel valued. And they had extensive systems for communicating within and outside the organizations. The book develops these concepts in separate chapters and describes the organizations the authors study as examples. Sandler and Hudson are experienced writers who have produced a straightforward, non-technical work that analyzes the special problems and concerns that these organizations share and offers a set of effective organizing principles to improve their management.

The title of the book has been lifted right out of Plumtree's Book in Canada "Beyond the Bottom Line" concerning management practice in the Canadian Public Service - shame on you. All-be-it the book here isn't bad.

Book Description
Summary
Do We Really Want Constant Change explores the human and organizational consequences of our infatuation with change and recommends ways to balance the opposing, but equally valuable, forces of change and stability. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Description
Change has become an end in itself, not a means to an end.
Obviously there is a need for change. Organizations need to adapt to new circumstances and to prepare for anticipated future conditions.
But, argue the authors of this provocative new Beyond the Bottom Line booklet, change and flexibility have become "god terms"-terms that are accepted unquestioningly as good. All you have to do is invoke them and you can gain the ready assent of others.
This happens every time a new change strategy comes along-TQM, reengineering, business process outsourcing, etc. Often the old strategy is dropped-whether or not it's shown results-and the new one is embraced, simply because it's the latest, presumably best, way to maintain the sine qua non of modern management: constant change.
The rush to change has become so fast, so heated, and so unthinking in many cases that we rarely have time to reflect on exactly what it is we're trying to accomplish. And organizations often overlook the fact that fact that constant change comes at a price-not just in money spent on consultants and seminars and training materials, but also in time, energy, and employee morale. A price that often outweighs the theoretical benefits.

Book Description
Training is about improving overall organizational performance, and no individual is more accountable for a company's performance than its CEO. It follows, then, that Workplace Learning and Performance professionals (a.k.a. trainers) must learn what chief executives hope to achieve through their company's training efforts, and that they must satisfy the expectations of those executives and other key stakeholders.
What CEOs Expect From Corporate Training is based on extensive interviews with CEOs across a myriad of industries, and reflects their ideas about how effective training can help achieve corporate objectives. To help readers apply these crucial insights to their own efforts, the authors have created a conceptual map of behaviors and relationships, plus a selection of practical worksheets, checklists, and other tools.
Unlike previous work based on what trainers believe they should be doing, What CEOs Expect From Corporate Training directly identifies the training imperatives defined by CEOs and the results they demand.

Book Description
This book offers a model for understanding autonomy in the context of the practical uses of this concept for applied ethics and political philosophy, and in particular for our understanding of moral responsibility. The first half of the book develops a concept of autonomy understood in terms of the Aristotelian notion of `helmsmanship', and argues that autonomy must be understood in these terms if it is to serve a useful role for practical issues in applied ethics. The second half of the book delves into our understanding of autonomy and its relationship to various forms of authority, especially law. Along the way, it explores the threat which a variety of forms of obligation might and might not pose to autonomy, and offers a model for understanding the limits which must be placed on authority if it is to remain consistent with autonomy.

Book Description
How did life originate in the universe? How did it all start after the creation of matter and the formation of elements in the stars? What are the pathways from the first organic molecules in space to the evolution of complex life forms on Earth and perhaps elsewhere? And how will it all end? The Universe itself sets the stage for the very interdisciplinary field of astrobiology that attempts to answer such questions, the central one being: What is the (cosmic) recipe for life? Currently there are only very few known elements in this vast mosaic. This book bridges a gap in the literature by bringing together leading specialists from different backgrounds who lecture on their fields, with close relevance to astrobiology, providing tutorial accounts that lead all the way to the forefront of research. The book will thus be useful for students, lecturers and reseachers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Topics in astrobiology.......2004-11-24
This is a set of papers primarily of interest to astrobiologists. One might want to use it as part of an astrobiology course for graduate students.
The articles are fascinating. We start with a section on organic material in space. We learn about extrasolar planets, including "hot jupiters." We read a discussion of habitable zones for these extrasolar planets. And we look at a scenario of life being transferred from Mars to Earth.
Next is a section on water: how essential it is for life, and what it would mean to have life without water. We look at the geomorphological record of water-related erosion on Mars, and we see a discussion of tides on Europa. And we look at life in cold water, hot water, and salty water.
Third is a section on radiation and life. That includes magnetic shielding from cosmic rays, ultraviolet radiation, and effects of cosmic rays. The fourth section is about gravity: gravitational effects at the cellular level, and effects of gravity on plants and animals. And the fifth section is about complexity and life: scaling phenomena, molecular self-assembly, and what it would be like to look for fossils in an extraterrestrial environment. The book concludes with a paper about forthcoming space missions relevant to astrobiology.
This book has plenty of useful material for astrobiologists!

Astronomers were among the first scientists to whole-heartedly embrace the computer and the Internet. Not surprisingly, the quantity of astronomy software and Web sites out there can now only be called "astronomical." Astronomer Jeff Foust and writer Ron Lafon have teamed up to sort through the chaff and give you the wheat. The Astronomer's Computer Companion isn't just a book, it's time: the time you could have wasted looking for software, images, animations, and data. With this book you can cut straight to the chase, and use your time to work--or play.
The CD-ROM includes a complete e-copy of the book with clickable links, so you can read and surf simultaneously. The collections on the CD are superb, with 132 shareware programs for the PC, 29 for the MAC, 148 images, and 38 animations. The authors' Web site will have updates for the links, so the book won't be outdated as quickly as most Web guides. The book's text is clear and basic enough for high-school students, but it is not simple-minded: even professional astronomers can benefit from the authors' thorough research to track down databases, references, and those all-important screen savers. --Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
The Astronomer's Computer Companion, written by a professional and an avid amateur astronomer, is a complete introduction to contemporary astronomy and a guide to the best software, web sites, and other computer resources for astronomers. Whether you have only a passing interest in astronomy or you spend every evening on a mountain top, you'll find something exciting in The Astronomer's Computer Companion.
You'll learn:
- What software to use to track the movement of planets, asteroids, satellites, and other celestial bodies-even how to keep a log of your sightings, generate star charts, calculate exposures for astronomical photographs, and more
- How to use the Internet to access high-powered remote telescopes for personal research projects
- Where on the Internet to find up-to-the-minute astronomy news or view the latest images
- How to use the Internet to share discoveries with astronomers around the world through newsgroups and chat rooms
- Where on the Internet to find answers to your astronomy questions quickly
About the CD-ROM:
The Astronomer's Computer Companion CD-ROM includes hundreds of megabytes of software (over 100 freeware, shareware, and demo programs)-saving you hours and hours of downloading time and bringing everything together in one place. In addition, the authors include dozens of fascinating astronomical images and animations, as well as a searchable electronic version of the book (in Adobe's PDF format) that you can read as you click the hyperlinks to browse the Web sites referenced throughout the book.
Customer Reviews:
I wanted to like this book.......2005-12-12
I wanted to like this book but in the end I have to wonder what the purpose of buying a book whose contents can be found in 10 minutes searching the internet. This book was perhaps of some value 5 years ago. I expected that this book would be more than a description of websites and programs and contain some 'how-to' information. Pages 293 through 482 were used to describe what was on the cd.
There are better astronomy books out there and the software and website descriptions properly belong on the internet.
Excellent resource guide for Astronomers.......2004-11-07
I expected a large portion of the book to be on scope control and image acquisition. In reality only the last chapter is on that topic and the majority of the book is on astronomy through the web and through custom software. As such this is an excellent field guide to desktop astronomy.
Organized like a trip through the solar system and into the universe the book contains multitudes of links and references to points around the web and custom software. The illustrations are primarily screenshots of the software.
Given the content on the book I think more attention could have been paid to organization. The embedding of hundreds of URLs makes the text hard to read. However, that doesn't negate the fact that there a lot of research has gone into making this a comprehensive guide to what is available for computer astronomy.
Well worth the look for the look for the amateur astronomer or particularly for teachers looking to find online resources for their courses.
The Computer Companion is Aging Well..........2001-08-03
To be honest, I really didn't WANT to write a good review of this book. In my experience a book that does anything to overview the WWW does itself and its readers a disservice since reality will make it quickly out of date.
Surprisingly, the "Astronomer's Computer Companion," written in late 1999, is actually aging well. A good majority of the web sites it references still do exist and are helpful. Jeff & Ron's writing style is easy to understand and also easy on the mind without crossing the line into outright fluff.
This book is most useful for the armchair astronomer who has good access to a computer and the internet and who doesn't want to waste a lot of time aimlessly going through search engines. Jeff & Ron have done the work for you and again, surprisingly, the work still stands up well even in the face of a very quickly changing field.
They did a very credible job with a rather difficult environment to work with.
a must for any student of astronomy.......1999-12-05
For anybody with an interest in astronomy, and owns a pc or mac, this book is a must have. At first, I thought it would be rather "dry" reading. But, I soon found it to be written in very easly understood language that even a laymen like myself could understand and enjoy. It has a wealth of info. on web addresses on almost any aspect of astronomy; I was amazed at how many there are! And, it has lots of pictures of stars and galaxies, which I personally like.
It's About Time!.......1999-11-23
It's about time this book was published. There are so many really neat things an amateur astronomer can do with his computer. This book finally explains what and how a desktop computer is an astronomer's best friend. The included CD has some great programs and the book is a wealth of URLs and WEB addresses for all sorts of things astronomical. If you're into astronomy and have a destktop (Windows or Apple) get this book!

ITS JUST FINE.......2007-05-08
I PURCHASED THIS BOOK FOR A CLASS I WAS TAKING. NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT IT..
Great Program, if you buy new!.......2006-06-30
Astronomy Online (the book) in conjunction with the website (access comes with the book) is a fantastic tool for anyone who wants to learn astronomy. The program goes through 30 interactive modules to teach you all you need to know about what you are looking at when you look up, our solar system, black holes, neutron stars, galaxies, the search of life, and the list goes on. It also has modules on the use of light in astronomy, optics, how to buy a telescope, and more! I recommend this book for anyone with an interest in astronomy.
The previous reviewer is correct though, a used copy won't give you access to the internet material that is the heart and soul of the program, so don't be cheap!
DO NOT buy this book used.......2005-01-11
The only thing you buy this book for is the passcode for the online section of the "Universe" textbook. A used code that has already been activated will be worthless to you. This book just has an overview of each chapter, it contains no useful information other than the passcode. Its just another way publishers are riping us off. I wasted eight bucks buying a used copy.
