5 out of 5 stars Best of Maxwell.......2007-05-09

I am reviewing Maxwell's book because he does write insightfully and has given to me useful answers when dealing with organizational or leadership challenges. In this 3-books-in-1 volume, there is repetition of the most-important points of his tenure as a leadership trainer. Favorite quotes: "-In most cases, those who want power probably shouldn't have it, those who enjoy it probably do so for the wrong reasons, and those who want most to hold on to it don't understand that it's only temporary. " And, "Being an influencer means....
modeling integrity with everyone you come into contact with.
nurturing the people in you life to make them feel valued.
showing faith in other so that they believe in themselves.
listening to them so that you can build your relationship with them.
understanding them so that you can help them achieve their dreams.
enlarging them in order to increase their potential.
navigating them through life's difficulties until they can do it themselves.
connecting with them so that you can move them to a higher level.
empowering them to become the person they were created to be.
reproducing other leaders so that your influence continues to grow through others." pg 209.

        5 out of 5 stars No successor/no success.......2007-05-09

I like the premise of this book: take care of your network and they will return the favor.
"The determination of a positive or negative outcome in my leadership depends upon my ability as a leader to develop those closest to me. It also depends upon my ability to recognize the value that others can give my organization and me. My goal is not to draw a following that results in a crowd. My goal is to develop leaders who become a movement....Leaders create and inspire new leaders."
He even quotes Druker--"There is no success without a successor" -- Peter Drucker

3 out of 5 stars Good but not Great.......2007-04-10

I have to admit that I didn't care for this as much as most of John Maxwell's other books. The information is great and there are a lot of points that can be pulled from this, but it just felt like the book was a bunch of lists within lists. It was actually difficult to digest.

This is one of those books that you can really only read a few pages at a time instead of trying to take in a bunch in one sitting. But even doing this, you'll find that each list is often accompanied by sub-lists and even sub-lists of sub-lists. Again, all the information is great, but you get lost a bit on what list you're reading.

With that said, Developing is still a must-read for any business leader, manager or supervisor. Maxwell provides the framework for not only finding but creating great leaders within your organization. He takes you through the process step by step (and step within step) of why and how to turn your employees into a strong leadership team.

        4 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-02-10

This book is a great book with tons of information and set out with a great spiritual strength. Reading level is medium difficulty but worth the personal stretch.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2006-03-11

I am addicted to John Maxwell's books on leadership! This one is excellent! It challenges you to become a strong leader in order to develop leaders. Maxwell always presents information in a way that is challenging and he gives practical ways to put new skills into action. If you are leading a corporation or a small group I think you would benefit from this book.

This is one of the best books I have ever read in term of the leadership development.

                      Book Description

This new edition is an unrivalled source of information and images covering the whole of modern astronomy. Its 130 articles written by experts form an absorbing panorama of information arranged by topic. Almost every page of the Atlas is richly illustrated with colour photographs, maps, and detailed diagrams. This reference book commences with a survey of the Sun and the solar system, followed by the stars and the Galaxy, and concludes with the extragalactic universe and cosmology. For this edition there are entirely new sections on the planets Venus, Neptune and Pluto, solar system debris, black holes and collapsed stars, active galaxies, galaxy clusters and cosmology. Many photographs have been replaced by improved images from modern telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope. An elaborate 24-page glossary and index has been added to increase the ease with which this sumptuous and lavish encyclopedia can be used for quick reference. There are substantial changes throughout the section on the Solar System. The material on Venus is re-written, to take account of the spectacular Magellan mission. The Mars chapter now includes the Phobos results. In the outer solar system new results on the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn are included, as well as new photographs from the Hubble Space Telescope. There is also a new chapter on planetary climate change. The section on stars and the Galaxy now includes chapters on astrometry and protoplanetary systems, as well as many modifications to the existing texts on evolved stars.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent detailed information book on astonomy.......2003-01-20

Well, it's a little out of date now , but this is still an excellent book for information on astrononmy up to the time period and the historical beginns of thscience. There's lots of great pictures and iullstrations. It's very comprehensive. However, it's a little hard to sit down with and read at times because of it's very large size.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but no atlas........2002-07-06

Let me point out first up, this book is very large. Both in its size and the wealth of information therein. You need to be sitting at a desk or table to be able to comfortably read this book. That aside, the amount of information it contains is vast. Although a novice can pick up this book and benefit from a read, many will probably find the text too technical. This is a book I return to often and always learn something new. It contains hundreds of photographs and graphs to compliment the text. Don't be mislead into thinking this is an atlas, as it is not. It really is a comprehensive illustrated encyclopedia of astronomy. If your after an atlas head to "The Cambridge Atlas of the Stars by Wil Tirion" or "Sky Atlas 2000.0: Deluxe by Wil Tirion, Roger W. Sinnott" for the two best available. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific astronomy reference!.......2000-06-06

I bought this book after borrowing a copy from my Astrophysics prof for 6 months or so. The text is very useful, but this book really stands out because of the diagrams. Many physics texts describe astrophysical phenomena, but this book has beautiful pictures of those selfsame events. I used colour copies for my presentations, and they really got the point across. I have never found a better, more comprehensive book about astronomy. The physics are at about the mid-undergraduate level.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in Astronomy.......1998-11-30

This is astronomy in a very big nutshell. This tome starts off with a very brief history of astronomy then it explores the universe from the inside out.

Early chapters deal with the sun, planets and the interstellar medium. Terrestrial planet descriptions include gorgeous topographies, volcanic and techtonic activity and internal structures. Chapters on gas giants include rings, clouds and magnetospheres. All satellites receive the same attention to detail as the planets. This book is thorough!

A salient point is this atlas is its treatment of the HR diagram--the Rosetta stone of astronomy. If you know the HR diagram you know a big chunk of astronomy. This book teaches you all about it in page after page of beautiful prints and pictures.

Later chapters deal with stellar evolution, galactic structure, quasars and finally cosmology. From nebulae to black holes to the debate on extra-terrestrial life this book covers it all!

The best thing about this atlas is that anyone can pick it up and read it. True, it's more than just a bunch of pretty pictures. It's technical but not TOO technical. It's meant for serious astronomers as well as someone just plain interested in space stuff.

Visually stunning as well as topically complete this is quite simply the best book on astronomy I have ever seen. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars no atlas, but scientific articles, for amateurs ?.......1997-11-10

Beuatiful pictures, but rather scientific/technical book, per item articles. An amateur who has read Hawkins, Griffin, Davies etc (like me) can understand about 50 % of the written part. No atlas !

                      Book Description

Developed by one of the foremost designers of astonomical maps, The Cambridge Star Atlas offers an unusual degree of breadth and detail for amateur and experienced astronomers. Northern and southern latitudes are included in a series of monthly sky charts and an atlas of the whole sky. Each of the 20 overlapping full color charts shows stars down to magnitude 6.5, together with about 900 nonstellar objects, such as clusters and galaxies, which can be seen with binoculars or a small telescope. This new edition features 52 color maps, improved versions of all the charts, and a thorough revision of the text and star data based on the latest information. In addition, there is a comprehensive double page map of the Moon's surface, which shows craters and other named features. Clear, authoritative, and easy-to-use, The Cambridge Star Atlas is an ideal reference for sky watchers everywhere, throughout the year. Wil Tirion began his first star atlas as a hobby, mapping the whole sky on five maps. It was published in the Encyclopedia of Astronomy and soon after was released as a separate set of maps by the British Astronomical Association. In 1983, Tirion began working as a full-time uranographer, or sky cartographer. Since then, he has contributed to many books and magazines on astronomy. He lives in the Netherlands.

                      5 out of 5 stars Observer's companion.......2007-09-27

This star atlas is both aesthetically pleasing and useful. The large pages made it possible to read the charts without having to resort to a magnifying glass. Coupled with a red flashight of some sort (e.g. Gerber ReconGerber 22-80016 Recon Light, White / Red / Blue / Green LED - Black Body it's a nice companion for observing.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for its intended purpose.......2007-01-13

In spite of a few minor flaws (see other reviews), this is probably the best, inexpensive, high-level atlas available. It is the first atlas I reach for when I need to explain something quickly to someone with little knowledge of the sky. The level of detail makes it good for outdoor use (with an appropriate red light, of course) with binoculars. Good software is increasingly making tools like this obsolete, but somehow hard-copy atlases always seem to have a place, and they're handy to grab off the shelf and just casually study too.

                      2 out of 5 stars Not recommended........2006-09-03

I have this book and I am very disappointed in it.

Yes, the charts are very well done. However, the book's layout and organization (or lack thereof) make the charts next to useless. They do next to nothing for the beginner who needs first to learn the sky. For the more serious observer, these charts are hopeless.

I would encourage beginner's to look at Norton's Atlas (20th edition) which has nice, large swaths of the sky covered in each chart along with a large reference section. Yes, if you get serious, you'll outgrow Norton's charts quickly, but you'll still have its useful reference material which is the bulk of the book.

For the serious observer, there's the Sky Atlas 2000.0, the Millenium, and older Uranometria atlases, all of which have much more detail that the serious observer craves.

As other reviewers have observed, these middle level charts (up to Mag 6) are probably not very uselful for either beginner or serious observer. I would add, "especially in the format presented here".

2 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2006-06-30

On the plus side, the star charts are the most clear and readable of any 6th magnitude atlas. Unfortunately, the atlas contains a couple of flaws which impede its usefulness in the field.

It goes to magnitude 6.5 and shows 9500 stars, which limits its usefulness. Even a lowly 6x30mm finder goes considerably deeper than that.

When you look for an object just off the edge of one of your charts, the edge of the chart tells you nothing about where to go next. You have to fumble back to the index page to find out which chart to go to, which is time consuming and aggravating.

Terrestrial atlases place guides at the edges of their maps: "continues on 14." This is all the more important for astronomical observation, where the user is in the dark with nothing but a red flashlight and possibly holding an eyepiece or filter. To make the atlas practicable for field use, users must write the adjacent chart information on the charts themselves. A row of tabs with the numbers of the charts would make the charts even more usable.

It is sad when designers of star atlases do not take into account the needs of their users.

A better combination 6th magnitude atlas and observer's guide is Levy's Skywatching. But I would recommend skipping 6th magnitude altogether. Get the Sky and Telescope Pocket Star Atlas instead. It is better designed, goes far deeper--to magnitude 7.6 with 31,000 stars, and costs less. Supplement it with an observer's guide like Skywatching or Celestial Sampler.

                      4 out of 5 stars Cool atlas.......2003-03-16

I have a 4 inch apo and if you have scope like me, buy this little gem. Sky maps are just beatiful, having exactly as much info as I need. They are beautifully rendered by a master. Maps overlap generously.

Tables are above every map and they are pleasure to use. Of course there is only 912 deep sky objects, but if you have a light bucket over 10" you need an atlas at least as heavy as your scope:) For me it is more than enough.

There are very interesting all-sky maps of various objects distribution. They give you a good feeling of our position in Galaxy and Universe.

I gave only four stars because in the field it can catch dew and you have to be carefull. The Moon map is not the best and for a reflector, so not good for me.

                      Highly recomended.

                        Book Description

Wil Tirion, the renowned astronomical cartographer, has produced this atlas of the sky with the beginner in mind. Each chart shows all the stars visible to the naked eye over a wide area of sky, together with the brighter nebulae and galaxies. Constellation boundaries and the Milky Way are also shown. Color codes enable the user to distinguish easily the various kinds of objects shown. The charts are complemented by tables of objects, such as different sorts of stars, nebulae, and galaxies, for which one can search. Each table is placed opposite the corresponding chart to facilitate use. The charts are in full color, making them both attractive and simple to use. The result is a self-contained star atlas that will delight and inform newcomers to practical astronomy.

5 out of 5 stars A small big astronomy book.......2006-10-20

Do not let the small size of this star atlas to mislead you (48pp) I bought this Cambridge Pocket Star Atlas with the intention of replacing another star atlas that I lost, and my surprise was big when I discovered that this booklet includes detailed descriptions and easy to understand explanations for such a concepts (to lay people like me) as Declination and Right Ascension, equinoxes, meridian passage, Apparent visual magnitude & Absolute visual magnitude, the Spectral types (O, B, A, F, G, K, M), Synodic Period, etc.

For years I had been observing the night sky by identifying the stars and the constellations only, but since when I read this Cambridge Pocket Star Atlas I can feel that I am, at least, an amateur astronomer. Buy this one, it's highly recommend.

This richly illustrated book contains over 200 photographs, nearly half of which are in full colour. It constitutes the best collection of available photographs of the planets that have been obtained from space over the past two decades. Also included, wherever available, are global maps of the planets and their satellites. Each of the following chapters is devoted to one of the planets, summarizing what has been learned about that planet and explaining in non-technical terms the features that can be seen in the many breathtaking photographs that are presented. The chapters are set out with the text first, followed by the figures, each accompanied by a long caption describing its essential points.
