Ultimate Rewards: What Really Motivates People to Achieve (Harvard Business Review Book Series)

ASIN: 0875848087 |
Book Description
In the knowledge economy, harnessing the power of people to do their best work is more critical than ever. This stellar collection--edited by GE chief learning officer Steve Kerr--brings together the best articles and interviews from the Harvard Business Review on individual and organizational motivation. From San Francisco 49ers head coach Bill Walsh on the arc of utilization that creates a plan for moving people through the organization to GE Chairman Jack Welch on the company's famous Work-Out program that transforms attitudes and energizes employees, this book includes many helpful examples of ultimate or true rewards. These articles--as well as pieces by Peter Drucker, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Ronald Heifetz, and others--examine the sources of motivation and offer numerous strategies for compensating employees and driving organizational excellence: power, accountability, responsibility, organizational culture, coaching, team work, incentives, goal setting, and employee ownership.
Ultimate Rewards tackles many of the hard issues and controversial questions about how to reward, what to reward, and who should reward, including:
Determining whether employees really value intrinsic benefits like self-actualization and job enrichment more than extrinsic ones like pay Using promotions to recognize performance in a downsized, de-layered business environment when specific jobs at the next level may not be readily available Instituting reversible compensation, including bonuses, incentive pay, and compensation at risk Making financial as well as nonfinancial bonuses visible. Designing efficient rewards that motivate future performance as well as thank people for past performance Measuring and rewarding results to minimize dysfunctional behavior Creating opportunities for peers, customers, and subordinates to participate in the review process
Framed by Kerr's provocative introduction, Ultimate Rewards highlights successes and failures as well as the conflicting opinions on what works and what doesn't, as it addresses the perennial challenge of ensuring top-quality performance and winning results.

Problems in Trial Advocacy
Anthony J. Bocchino , and Donald H. Beskind Manufacturer: National Institute for Trial Advocacy ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1556818319 |
Book Description
To develop trial skills, students must practice techniques and strategies under the watchful eyes of experienced faculty. NITA's learning-by-doing programs are based on this premise, as is our well-known trial advocacy textbook Problems in Trial Advocacy. The new, revised 2003 Edition of Problems in Trial Advocacy is now available. For the first time, the problems in this textbook are date specific. They simulate actual courtroom situations and are designed to develop the basic skills necessary for all trial lawyers. The situations are realistic and in many cases are based, in whole or in part, on actual trials. They involve a variety of both civil and criminal cases. Also for the first time in this edition, the exhibits are included on a CD.
The new edition of Problems in Trial Advocacy is also designed so that fact patterns used for direct and cross-examination problems contain two witness examinations per fact pattern, which are also used for other exercises in the course, such as exhibits or impeachment, among others. As a result, students spend less time learning fact patterns and more time developing their skills as trial lawyers.
Using the text, students learn to appreciate that a trial is not merely a collection of independent steps. Rather it is the process of developingthrough opening statements, direct and cross-examination of lay and expert witnesses, introduction of exhibits, impeachment and rehabilitation, and closing argumentsa well-conceived, planned, and delivered case theory. An effective case theory will be one that supports a judgment in your favor as a matter of law, answers the question of what really happened and why for the fact finder, and persuades the fact finder that your client should prevail as a matter of fairness and justice.
Use Problems in Trial Advocacy alone or with your choice of civil or criminal case files from NITA's extensive library. It also can be combined with Steven Lubet's Modern Trial Advocacy: Analysis and Practice for a complete advocacy course.

Meteorites, Ice, and Antarctica: A Personal Account (Studies in Polar Research)
William A. Cassidy Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521258723 |
Book Description
Bill Cassidy led meteorite recovery expeditions in the Antarctic for fifteen years and his searches have resulted in the collection of thousands of meteorite specimens from the ice. This personal account of his field experiences on the U.S. Antarctic Search for Meteorites Project reveals the influence the work has had on our understanding of the moon, Mars and the asteroid belt. Cassidy describes the hardships and dangers of fieldwork in a hostile environment, as well as the appreciation he developed for its beauty. William Cassidy is Emeritus Professor of Geology and Planetary Science at the University of Pittsburgh. He initiated the U.S. Antarctic Search for Meteorites (ANSMET) nroject and led meteorite recovery expeditions in Antarctica in1976. His name is found attached to a mineral (cassidyite), on the map of Antarctica (Cassidy Glacier), and in the Catalog of Asteroids (3382 Cassidy). Profiled in "American Men of Science," and "Who's Who in America," he is also a recipient of The Antarctic Service Medal from the United States and has published widely in Science, Meteoritics and Planetary Science, and The Journal of Geophysical Research.Customer Reviews:
Solar System Leftovers in the Freezer.......2004-12-22
A Masterpiece of Communication!.......2004-06-15
Talk about translating meteorite science into terms of human experience! Under, "THE SOCIOLOGY OF CHONDRITES [A broad class of meteorites]", we gain easy access when Cassidy smilingly speaks of "mixed neighborhoods" and the "melting pot" effect. But a few words do no justice to Cassidy's wonderful analogy. One must read it and smile while learning.
Cassidy neither talks down to his audience nor resorts to jargon just to sound 'scientific'. As a reviewer having read almost every meteorite book published in the English language (with help of the NASA-Goddard library), this one emerges as my favorite because of the clarity of presentation and even its 'salt' of good humor.
The entire book is permeated with an air of open honesty and objectivity. When anyone, including the author, has an unproven idea about, e.g., the origin of certain meteorite parent bodies, it clearly is labeled as such. Readers are encouraged in the valuable lesson of thinking for themselves, and with such evoked pondering, Cassidy applies one of the best learning tools.
So it is that this book is enthusiastically recommended, whether you be an intelligent novice just wanting to learn about meteorites and the origin of our solar system, a wayward wanderer who has glimpsed the majesty of a 'falling star' and wondered how it might be to relieve loose bowels in the Antarctic wind, or whether you are one of Cassidy's fellow scientists desiring to share the adventures of a colleague.
This book is learning at its most pleasurable, an adventure into life as a scientist at the terrestrial climatic extreme, a view into the politics of financing scientific adventures, and, furthermore, just one doggoned wonderful reading experience!
