Bradley-Morris, Inc. (BMI) commends Ms. Enelow and Ms. Kursmark for endeavoring to assist transitioning military. As the largest military to civilian placement firm, we have found that the most successful military job seekers who utilize our free services are the ones who have put some time and energy into preparation, including constructing a good resume, doing some basic research on the companies that they are interviewing with, as well as all-important practice interviews. Being able to discuss their military experience in terms that a civilian hiring authority will understand is key.

    Book Description

This reader features contributions from the best-known names in criminology today, commenting on modern theories of criminology and how the concept of justice is met (or not met) by our criminal justice system. Based on critical theories of criminology, each author presents a compelling vision of illustrations of the theory and shows how the theoretical framework relates to the nature and structure of our criminal justice system.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Alternative in the Study of Criminal Justice!.......2000-04-05

This anthology offers a wide perspective of criminal justice issues by experts in the field. Unlike other criminal justice anthologies, this book offers a wide variety of views about how social justice and criminal justice work, or do not work together. Many of the articles contained in the book focus on criminal justice issues that are new phenomena in American society. Most of the issues presented within the book are a great addition to the long established criminological theories that have been taught to generations of criminology students. This book would make an interesting addition to anyone interested in studying the dynamics of current criminal justice issues.

    Book Description

With a new foreword by Sanford Levison, a new appendix on Terry Shiavo, and updates on the appointment process and detainees in Guantanomo Bay, this engaging and lively text examines the relationship between law and politics and emphasizes the political importance of sound legal reasoning.

Reason in Law examines the intersection of law and politics: legal reasoning. It teaches students how to examine judicial decisions, encouraging them to become “thoughtful judges of judging.” Using cases ripped from the headlines–such as the Alabama federal courthouse “Ten Commandments” case, Ashcroft v. Oregon, and Lawrence v. Texas–authors Carter and Burke teach through illustrative examples and have assembled a gallery of fascinating cases to engage student interest. Ultimately, the text attempts to answer the question: “How can a pluralistic society be ruled legitimately?” If people of differing political allegiances can interpret the same legal text quite differently, how can the rule of law be properly applied?

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Legal Analysis Introduction........2005-10-31

Authors Carter and Burke create a brief but effective legal analysis tool in the form of their text, "Reason in Law."

By examining the relationship between the law and politics, the text asks that students attempt to become "thoughtful judges of judging" while becoming familiar with and trying to answer the ultimate issue, that being: "how can a pluralistic society be ruled legitimately if people of differing political allegiances can interpret the same legal text quite differently, . . . then how can the rule of law be properly applied?"

I have required this text for my Constitutional Law course students, and must caution the potential buyer that an understanding of civics must be possessed before the book can be read and understood in light of it's full spectrum.

Packed with current events, cases and controversies pulled right from the headlines of the newspapers, this text is compatible with any political science or legal curriculum. Illustrative cases and questions complete and summarize each chapter thus creating tools for the student to use so as to grasp the legal concepts, meanings, and interactions of law and the contemporary legal process.

Informative and thought provoking. Four stars.

This book is an interpretation and critique of Habermas's philosophy as contained in his book, Between Facts and Norms. The main argument is that while Habermas does succeed in laying out foundations, conceptual and methodological, for the philosophy of law, the book is flawed by a fundamental contradiction between a democracy ruled by law and capitalism. In what constitutes the only English-language collection of essays ever dedicated to the analysis of Montesquieu's contributions to political science, the contributors review some of the most vexing controversies that have arisen in the interpretation of Montesquieu's thought. By paying careful attention to the historical, political, and philosophical contexts of Montesquieu's ideas, the contributors provide fresh readings of The Spirit of Laws, clarify the goals and ambitions of its author, and point out the pertinence of his thinking to the problems of our world today.

                  Book Description

For twenty years, the author has contested the ‘establishment’ view of quasars as the most distant objects in the universe. In this book, Arp presents the original observations and fundamental data on quasars and galaxies, and explains why he has concluded that: far from being the most distant objects in the universe, quasars are associated in space with relatively nearby galaxies; quasars’ enormous redshifts do not arise from the expansion of the universe, but rather are intrinsic properties of the quasars themselves; many galaxies show redshift anomalies related to quasars’ redshifts; quasars and galaxies have an origin far different from that assumed in the ‘standard’ big-bang model of the universe; many astronomers, despite the accumulation of compelling evidence, defend what Arp believes is a fundamentally incorrect assumption about cosmic objects.

5 out of 5 stars Startling and compelling.......1999-02-01

Halton Arp stirs the pot with this one and makes the reader ask fundamental questions about the current theories of cosmology. This should be assigned reading for any astronomy student, but probably will not be. It cuts to the heart of the issues in current astronomy research and funding. After reading this book, one must conclude that the system has not changed much since the days of Galileo. An very easy to read and throughly enjoyable book. My copy has made the rounds. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This book explains why the universe is not expanding.......1998-10-23

Quasars,Redshifts and Controversies reads like a good detective novel - once you start to read, you can't put it down. Arp, the world's foremost quasar researcher, puts forward a convincing case that their high redshift is not due to the expansion of the universe but is an intrinsic effect and caused by their being ejected from the nucleus of comparatively local galaxies.
