        Book Description

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is one avenue for offering assistance to developing countries in their efforts to grow. Small countries typically have limited resources to direct toward investment attraction programs, so the ability to segment the market (of Multinational Corporations looking to invest) is a crucial skill. This book develops and employs an investment preference analysis model to give evidence that homogenous groups of investors can be identified. Once these groups are identified, their needs - specific preference requirements for laws, regulations, incentives, and general conditions - can be more efficiently addressed.

        Book Description

The Hill and Wang Critical Issues Series: concise, affordable works on pivotal topics in American history, society, and politics.

Stephanson explores the origins of Manifest Destiny--the American idea of providential and historical chosenness--and shows how and why it has been invoked over the past three hundred years. He traces the roots of Manifest Destiny from the British settlement of North America and the rise of Puritanism through Woodrow Wilson's efforts to "make the world safe for democracy" and Ronald Reagan's struggle against the "evil empire" of the Soviet Union. The result is a remarkable and necessary book about how faith in divinely ordained expansionism has marked the course of American history.

        5 out of 5 stars Solid Read.......2007-05-07

Stephanson was a professor of mine at Columbia University. His book is a concise tracing of the notion of Manifest Destiny from the inception of the British colonies in North America through the Cold War. He is a fabulous and engaging writer. In a post-9/11 world, Stephanson's book rings a crucial chord that has long been a part of the foundations of the United States, but oft remains to be neglected and forgotten.

4 out of 5 stars Cutting through the latice........2000-07-14

Manifest destiny is an all too often ignored subject in American history, if for any other reason than it rather vividly illustraits the paradoxes of American history.

Where this book's major aim is not expressedly moralizing (although this is not avoided), but rather an attempt to paint a history of the development of the concept and show how it has been carried through to the very near past, it does so in a way which is compact and concise. In short, only those very well versed in American political and philosophical thought will be able to understand the signifigance of even 50% of the subjects discussed. The total volume of information in this rather slim book is difficult to rate in terms of relavance without a deep understanding of even the most minute areas of the United State's past.

Does this mean the book is unreadable to a beginner to American history? Not at all. However without any guide regarding the signifigance of each passage and quote only the initiated will be able to determin whether the author is making an important statement, or simply adding on extra for effect.

The small size and extreemly condensed subject matter will be just the thing for neonates of American history looking to become well versed in the subject. The amount of sources and concepts drawn upon are many and fairly diverse.

Aside from the above strengths/weaknesses, there is one unfortunate oversight which is all too common in writing or discussion of the subject. That is, a broader grasp of the European origins of the fledgling "divine doctrine". The view of America as the "great experiment of man, provided by God for the faithful" is well known, but no attention was spent looking in to the already present philosophy of the "White Man's Burden", which had already blazed across South and East Asia for over a centry preceeding the full scale colonization of the New World. More attention to these origins would have been appreciated.

All in all, this will be an excelent book to start on unraveling the concept of manifest destiny as well as the overall framework of American history, if for any other reason than it will provide practice in determining the relavance and import of sources. For those sources which are almost beyond question, even to the average reader, this will serve more as an elementary introduction to an all-too-often ignored segment of the history of the United States.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but not a good bedtime story.......2000-01-18

The interesting point of the book is demonstrating how religious righteousness has manifested itself into the very core of American politics and self identity since its inception. An eye opener to see how racist our country has always been. However, the author's arrogance and pomposity makes for dense difficult reading and tends to distract from the message.

            Book Description

The Transformation of Democracy? examines whether globalization is transforming the conditions under which liberal democratic politics operate and, given this, what the prospects are for a more democratic world order. The book is divided into two parts: Part I: 'Global Transformations', asks whether globalization is transforming the conditions of liberal democratic governance.Part II: 'Democratizing World Order', critically evaluates the prospects for democratizing global forces through an examination of the reform of global governance: the democratic potential of the EU; international initiatives to develop greater democratic accountability of multinational corporate capital; and universal human rights. The final chapter reflects upon the meaning of democracy in the context of contemporary patterns of globalization and regionalization. The contributors to the volume include Robert Cox, Donna Dickenson, Tony Evans, Mark Imber, David Goldblatt, Anthony McGrew, James Goodman, Grahame Thompson, and Martin Shaw.

              Book Description

Sovereign Rights and Territorial Space in Sino-Japanese Relations is an investigation of the highly topical issues involved in the Diaoyu/Senkaku confrontation. It begins by addressing the issue of the historical development of the dispute: To whom do the islands belong? When did China and Japan become involved? Does historical evidence prove who has sovereignty over the islands? How has irredentism (the claim to territory based on one or another historical right) become a major state policy in both countries? Other issues center on Chinese views of sovereignty and methods of delimiting territorial boundaries during the Ming and Qing periods, the Chinese concept of hegemony, and the history behind the deep mistrust that permeates Sino-Japanese relations. Finally, the author discloses the interwoven relationship between geography and history in East Asia.

              Book Description

All of the national claims to South China Sea area islands and ocean space have weaknesses. The dangerous and unstable state created by the unilateral actions of claimants and by the continuing opportunities for outside powers' involvement demand an appropriate measure. This book offers several possible regional interim solutions. The authors propose a regional multinational solution for part of the area because other alternatives appear impractical. Division or allocation of the features and ocean space among the competing claimants seems unfeasible because of sharp disagreements over the boundaries in dispute and over the appropriate equitable division. Serial bilateral negotiations might resolve some conflicting claims but would leave or create others; they also present problems of cost and efficiency. An institutionalized dialogue would add structure and stability to the discussions, and confidence-building measures (CBMs) could help move the situation forward, but neither would suffice as a solution. The creation of a regional multilateral resource management body could reduce the rife regional tension, however. Many international and regional precedents provide valuable lessons for regime-building in the South China Sea. The illustrations presented stimulate constructive discussion of a comprehensive multilateral interim solution to these difficult and dangerous conflicts. This book will interest and assist decision-makers, negotiators, and academics desirous of a peaceful solution to these disputes.

                  Book Description

Reluctant Pioneers describes the migration of Chinese to Manchuria, their settlement there, and the incorporation of Manchuria into an expanding China, from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. The expansion of Chinese state and society from the agrarian and urban core of China proper to the territories north and west of the Great Wall doubled the size of the empire, forming the “China” now so prominent on the map of Asia. The movement and settlement of people, clearing and cultivation of land, invasions of soldiers, circulation of merchants, and establishment of government offices extended the boundaries of China at the same time that the American expansion westward and the Russian expansion eastward created the other great landed empires that dominated the twentieth century and persist today.

The chief purpose of this book is to describe the Chinese experience and what it tells us about the expansion of states and societies, drawing comparisons with Russia and America, and reflecting on the nature of what scholars since Frederick Jackson Turner have called “frontiers” and what Turner’s critics now call “borderlands” or “middle ground.” In addition, the book touches on several other issues central to our understanding of modern China, such as the development of the Chinese economy and the nature of Chinese migration.

                  Book Description

This book provides the first comprehensive examination of modern political partition and military conflict. Once touted as the most efficient geopolitical means for resolving ideological and ethnic strife, partition has too often served to deepen enmity and provoke further violence. Robert K. Schaeffer argues that partition and its accompanying conflicts have their roots not in ancient hatreds but in the political realities of the twentieth century. Schaeffer also examines the spread of terrorism and guerrilla warfare in the divided states, as well as the destructive legacy of partition on democracy, citizenship, and sovereignty.

                  Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An interesting historical overview.......2001-04-13

What is presented here is a detailed accounting of the evolution of the policy of partition as a means of conflict resolution. Schaeffer traces the concept from its philosophical forebears into the present, and treats prominent empirical examples of partition (all failed, failing, or dubiously sustainable).

An interesting account it certainly is, but analysis of the cases is lacking: the reader is presented with histories, and nothing but. Some ideas as to why partition is inclined to fail are mentioned, but are never tied coherently together in the form of a unitary theory. In all, a useful history, bringing together excellent historical analyses, but no meaningful theories are propagated herein.

                      Book Description

In the Hellenistic period certain Greek temples and cities came to be declared "sacred and inviolable." Asylia was the practice of declaring religious places precincts of asylum, meaning they were immune to violence and civil authority. The evidence for this phenomenon--mainly inscriptions and coins--is scattered in the published record. The material has never been collected and presented in one publication until now.
Kent J. Rigsby lays out these documents and discusses their historical implications in a substantial introduction. He argues that while a hopeful intention of military neutrality lay behind the institution of asylum, the declarations did not in fact change military behavior. Instead, "declared inviolability" became a civic and religious honor for which cities across the Greek world competed during the third to first centuries B.C.

                        Book Description

In the 1930s and 1940s the US Department of Agriculture undertook detailed studies of six US rural communities representing various patterns of social and economic change that were affecting rural America. These studies became classics in the literature on rural communities, and for the past half-century have helped to develop major theoretical perspectives in community sociology. Fifty years later the same study areas were revisited by a team of rural sociologists, with the goal of assessing what changes have occurred and what community characteristics have persisted. This book provides a fascinating historical and contemporary perspective on patterns and processes of social and economic restructuring in these communities. It offers important insights into social changes affecting American rural communities over the last half of the 20th century.
