Customer Reviews:
Absolutely THE best book on Y2K investing!.......1999-08-17
This book was a refreshing change from some other books that have been published on the subject of Y2K investing. Specifically, it is an extraordinarily well-researched book. It provides indepth details of possible y2k strategies and names specific stocks. Truly an outstanding effort!
It is the reasonable person's guide to investing for Y2K........1999-06-04
As an ex Chief Information Officer for a fortune 500 company, I've spent many years communicating to government and industry alike, what impact we could reasonably expect from the Year 2000 Computer Date Change Problem. This is the best book I have read to date, which provides reasonable and definitive answers to one the questions I am most frequently asked regarding Y2K, "What should I do about my investments?"
Today, as a consultant and author of THE REASONABLE PERSON'S GUIDE TO Y2K, I spend my time communicating about what moderate, down-to-earth, level-headed governments and individuals can do to prepare. In that regard, I consider L. Jay Kuo's and Edward Dua's book the reasonably person's guide to investing for the Year 2000 transition. I highly recommend this book for those who believe Y2K will not be a disaster, nor will it be "business-as-usual", and that reasonable preparedness for something "in between" is warranted.
If you believe Dr. Ed Yardeni, Chief Global Economist and Global Investment Strategist for Duetsche Bank Securities, when he predicts a 70% probability that Y2K will create a global recession which could last 12 to 24 months, then this book is must reading.
What I particularly liked about this book, is that the information is usable and it is not the "don't worry, be happy" message most brokerage houses are espousing. Not only do the authors provide powerful insight into how and why you should defensively posture current investments against a Y2K induced recession, they also venture forth suggestions on how to profit from it as well. Something I have been trying to get my broker to tell me for months. Come to think of it, I highly recommend this book for stockbrokers and fund managers too.
An investment guide not only helpful but hugely interesting!.......1999-04-12
Not being someone who typically reads a lot of investment guides, I was very happily astonished at how easily this book reads. L. Jay Kuo is an excellent writer, describing the background of the Y2K problem without getting too technical and obscure, and depicts the issue with extreme clarity and (dare I suggest it?) engaging wit. People from all backgrounds, from the investment-astute to the "digerati" (as Mr. Kuo puts it), to the neophytes, hesitant about investing in general but looking for some simple but straightforward insightful commentary and/or advice, will be able to get a lot out of this book. Oddly enough, it's even entertaining (!) -- Mr. Kuo is clever with his subheadings and his turn of phrase. While it is definitely not written to be "over people's heads" (as many investment guides seem to be), Mr. Kuo still manages to deliver deceptively clear prose with many witty allusions and insights, such that the book does not fall into the "pedantic trap" (as many investment guides ALSO seem to do). He explains the areas most likely to be adversely (and positively) affected by the upcoming confusion surrounding Y2K, presents really quite sound reasons for these views, and then suggests some viable approaches and at-least short term solutions so as to best protect oneself (and one's portfolio) from the inevitable chaos Y2K will present to the financial markets. Even if you never read another investment guide in your life, I recommend this one. Highly.
Wow........1999-04-01
I read an advance copy of this book. A very timely look at a problem (opportunity) that will soon be upon us. Dua hits the nail on the head when he says, "With Y2K there will be winners and losers in the investing world. Try to be one of them." Excellently written. Highly recommended for the casual or professional investor.

A Balanced review of the problem.......1998-12-20
Donald S. McAlvany has presented a fairly balanced review of the Y2K problem. Without stepping away from discussing the serious threat of the problem he also continues to help the reader understand that there will be life after the crisis. Unfortunately there have been, as of late, a number of authors that routinely refer to the crisis on the level of Armageddon. At least Mr. McAlvany has the precense of mind in his publication to realize that the computer problem is solvable (not necessarily before the year 2000 date) and will eventually allow society to return to some normalcy. Once again I commend him for bringing a sense of balance to the problem without saying that nothing is wrong.

Book Description
This book explains year the 2000 problem in non-technical terms from a woman's perspective with an emphasis on preparing your home for a possible disruption in everyday life. It not only explains the Y2K problem, but it also explains in detail why you should be prepared for any emergency, natural or man-made (Y2K). It provides answers to common questions in a "Dear Abby" like style with a focus on the special needs and concerns of women.
Customer Reviews:
very good.......1999-11-18
I bought this book about a month ago and followed everything the book said.It will take awhile but I believe I will be prepared for Y2K.I took all of my husbands money to buy a power generator.I have been burying food in the backyard.I bought 30 sf freezer and have filled it with Bird Pies.I plan on going out and buying 6 months supply of drinking water next week.I know we are facing armaggedon but with the help of this great book,I think we will be one of the few survivors.
Practical, down-to-earth, easy to read. Great book! :-).......1999-08-03
Whether or not the Y2K Millenium Bug turns out to be a frightening fact or fabulous fizzle, emergency preparedness is a topic that everyone should investigate -- especially families with children at home. You never know when sudden financial down turns could make food purchasing difficult, or a severe winter storm could keep your family confined to home for an extended period of time, or even an earthquake could cause the need for emergency essentials on hand. While I'm not sure what I personally feel about the outcome of the Y2K computer problem, I do see the common sense idea of family preparedness to be a good approach for anyone to seriously consider. Having a well-stocked rotating pantry that's replenished from items purchased in bulk and on sale is also a great way to save money on your family's regular expenses (Y2K or not!). I appreciated the author's detailed list of suggestions for items to store ahead (whether you're planning a storage system to last for one week, six months, or a full year+).
My husband even said it was good!.......1999-05-29
Thank you, thank you for a "woman's perspective on Y2K. It was such an encouragement to learn that there are lots of other women who are frustrated by their husband's cavalier attitude at what could be a significant problem. Fortunately, my husband has started reading it and says that "maybe she has a point . . ." He really is taking it serious now since "60 Minutes" said it could be bad. The recent segment they ran solidified what Karen and other Y2K writers have been saying about this impending crisis.
Thank you for a well-written and helpful resource.
Great information for preparing your home.......1999-04-19
Karen Anderson is probably the best-informed source for preparing for possible Y2K disruptions at home. While some are now saying that Y2K will be no big deal, the fact is, no one really knows what will happen. Many Y2K-knowledgeable people are saying we all need to be prepared in case normal life, with electricity and water on demand, etc., is disrupted for a time. Even Y2K expert Peter de Jager, who now says "we have broken the back of Y2K," still recommends preparing for one month of disruptions, just in case. Anderson's book will tell you everything you need to know about getting ready at home. She even recommends gathering a little extra, to share with those who may be unable to prepare ahead of time, in the spirit of community preparedness. I recommend this book highly.
simple and easy to understand.......1999-03-28
Karen Anderson does an excellent job of explaining Y2K in simple terms. It is easy to understand. And so practical!

Y2K Survival Guide: Protect Your Family From The Coming Crisis
J. C. Cunningham
Manufacturer: Inland Printing
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 0967016606 |
Book Description
The Y2K Survival Guide: Protect Your Family From the Coming Crisis, takes the reader on a broad overview of survival preparation topics; food, water, shelter, medical, communications, light & power, protection, the attitudes necessary for successful Y2K preparations and survival and more. The book lays out a variety of preparation options and allows the reader to tailor a preparation plan which reflects their needs and resources.
Customer Reviews:
If you buy only one book on the Y2K crisis, make it this one.......2003-03-30
Having spent the better part of the last three years holed up in an underground bunker, I can say with some authority that J.C. Cunningham's Y2K preparedness guide is an indispensible tool for surviving "The Coming Crisis." The tips on stockpiling nuts, berries and ammunition were invaluable, as was the suggestion to cease all contact with bears and other woodland creatures. And I shudder to think what would've happened had I not stopped bathing in the days leading up to the Y2K catastrophe - every time you take a bath you lose thousands of precious cells! (p. 17)
Cunningham has performed a valuable service here, and if I thought it was safe to leave my property for even a minute, I'd try to thank him or her personally. I sleep soundly at night (using my long beard as a blanket, p. 87), content in the knowledge that I've done all I can to protect my family and me from Y2K: The Coming Crisis.
It is in the top seven books about Y2K in my opinion........1999-06-10
This is MinnesotaSmith, author of a Y2K website. I am proud to know J.C. Cunningham as a friend. His book is one of only seven (out of the hundreds currently available) books related to Y2K that I have classified as "must-buys" on my website. It covers practically every topic you will have to consider for getting your family to the other side of Y2K, and gives you numerous leads to follow to go further. There are many resources listed both to obtain goods and additional information. If you think there is any chance Y2K could be much of anything at all, you should obtain this book.END
Put this book in your reference library and refer to it........1999-06-04
Having read this book, amongst others, I have found that you could replace the "Y2K" in the title for any natural or man-made disaster and still have all the basic information you and your family need to survive. As a former SERE (Survival, Escape, Resistance, Evade) graduate and instructor in the U.S. Armed Forces, I feel that this is one of the best, if not THE best book, of the "Y2K" books around. It covers a myriad of topics so that you are not limited to a narrow range of information for a specific scenario. If you believe that TEOTWAWKI is upon us then this for you. If you just believe that Y2K is a minor `blip' in the history of mankind it will help you prepare for almost any emergency or disaster, such as, power outages, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc.
This is one of many `Survival' books that I have in MY library and I feel that, page for page, it holds it's own with those books written by wider publicized writers.
Get it, Read it, Put on your shelf, Refer to it, Recommend it!
After reviewing 7 of this type, I think it's the best........1999-06-03
It says in the front that it was originally the "Changing Earth Survival Guide" - and it works excellently for that as well.
This book is an excellent start point for almost everything you need to know. What is surprising is that he treats this delicate subject with an astute insight to the psychological needs (and shortcomings) of people as well.
He gives sources for where to find everything you need and advice on how to do it the most economically. This one's a WINNER! I'd have paid twice as much once I got it.
A thorough treatment of Y2K preparation - Highly recommended.......1999-04-19
I've been reading practically anything I can get my hands on about Y2K preparation. Until I ran into "Y2K Survival Guide," I had nothing that truly told me exactly what to do. I particularly like the fact that the Guide helped me evaluate my own attitudes about preparation, and based on my position, to decide what steps my family should take. And then it describes how to achieve those measures of preparedness. Mr. Cunningham has obviously devoted countless hours compiling information for his readers' use. And we are now the richer for it, with the publication of this terrific book. If Y2K turns out to be more than a "bump in the road," you'll be glad you read this book.

The Year 2000 (Y2K) computer crisis could well be the shock or a component of a combination of shock waves economic, political, and technological that causes a crisis in the economic system of the world.
This book covers the following topics: (1) What is the Year 2000 computer issue. (2) What caused the Year 2000 issue? (3) Myths and Rumors about the Year 2000 computer crisis. (4) The nature of survival being a state of mind, and (5) How one can prepare.
Customer Reviews:
Good, easily readable for non-technical public concerned Y2K.......1999-03-25
A good overview of how we got where we are with the Y-2K problem and how to prepare for its consequence. This book is written in language that most can understand even if they do not have an excellent computer background. This book is for the individual who is trying to decide whether to become an alarmist about the Y2k problem or just ignore it. (Maybe there is a third alternative). I liked the way the book compared this problem to other types of "disaster prepardness" which allows some simplification and generalizing which is good for the non-technical reader. Although some may not like the "personal" aspects of the book I found it made the book more real and more individualized.
Book Description
How do you tell people that the world they know is about to change? That the change amounts to a disaster? One thing for sure, you don't present them with a bunch of figures and technical jargon and say, "That's it, folks!"I have used the same story sceanario presented so successfully in, First Aid For The Disaster Stress Trauma Victim, A Guide and Self-help Manual For The Lay Person Treating disaster Stress Trauma Victims. People understand a story and we need to understand the problem. It is a story about a typical family's experience with January 1, 2000, and how they deal with the results. There is also a recounting of an old-timer's experience in the 1930's depression. That time it happened fast and with little warning. It is the closest thing to what is predicted for Y2K.This time we have warning and we had better take heed and prepare for it.I went through the depression, but like everybody else, I have no experience with what may happen with Y2K. That's! the best I can do. Some day the Survivors will measure its accuracy.

Readers also will find that this teaching tool becomes a handy reference manual in the professional setting.
Customer Reviews:
For beginners.......2007-05-12
I purchased this book for a class (legal technology) which turned out to be as remedial as this book. While I believe it could be very useful for someone who is not used to navigating a computer, it really insults the intelligence of those of us who have grown up with technology. This book does have a few useful tips that clarify certain aspects of Concordance and other legal programs, but I find it easier to explore an unfamiliar program on my own without the tedious step-by-step process Roper uses in his lessons.
Informative, but............2006-11-07
I purchaed this book for a Paralegal class. I had two very bad experiences with the book. First, the first copy I received had no Appendix in it, so I had to send it back. It was unfortunate, as I needed the Appendix to do an assignment. Secondly, the software that was provided was expired when I tried to load it into my laptop to do homework. I called the publishing company and they promised to send me a new disk; two weeks later and I still have not received it.
I will keep it as a reference source, but I hope that another book will be written for future students. If you do not need it for a class, PLEASE look for another book.
Great learning tool.......2005-03-24
I bought this book for a legal assistant class and I enjoyed it. I learned a lot. It's hard to learn computers from a book - but not this one. The book comes with software and has tutorials and exercises that accompany the software. My class also liked the fact that there are tons of practical applications for how computers are actually used by practicing paralegals and legal secretaries in the book. Also, when it comes to litigation support - one of the most difficult legal computer applications to master - it was fantastic. It comes with three different litigation support programs, including Summation. Summation is fairly involved to learn and the book, tutorials, exercises and software did a good job of teaching this to me. I am confident now in my ability to do basic litigation support. The chapter on using the Internet to do legal and factual research was also excellent.
I would definately buy this again!.......2005-03-18
This book is essential for anyone working in a law office. Computers are used in nearly every aspect of working in a law firm. The book is huge - nearly 700 pages - and it covers every main type of program used in a law office. It comes with software, and lots of exercises and I thought it was very easy to read and straight forward. It covers hard topics like litigation support and Access databases in a way that I could understand without totally going over my head. The book covers both entry level and advanced topics. For example in the word processing chapter the Word tutorial had 7 lessons that got progressively more difficult, starting with basic word processing and ending with mail merges and creating tables of authorities.
Highly Recommended.......2005-03-14
I think this is a fabulous book. It comes with demonstration versions of 5 legal software programs including three litigation support programs, a time and billing program and a case management program. There were a number of in-depth, hands-on exercises for each program, so I really got to learn about each type of program by using it. Also, although I have used Access, Word, Excel and Powerpoint before, I liked the fact that there were in-depth exercises for learning legal applications for each of these programs. This is a very practical book.
Book Description
This book demonstrates how to use Access, Excel, Word and PowerPoint to become more effective and efficient in law enforcement applications. The examples presented in this book concentrate on crime analysis, community policing and investigative data. The exercises solve real world problems in law enforcement, using fictional data. The book has been designed for a 40 hour seminar or a semester long college course. College or university faculty are encouraged to review the book for use in a crime analysis and community policing applications courses.

Don't Bother.......2005-07-25
I've never bothered to review a book that i didn't like, but I had to keep others from making the same mistake i did.
The fact that this book is so old should have tipped me off. The information is way out of date. Even if it was up to date, it's way too basic even for an unsophisticated searcher like me.
I expected it to be a step by step on how to research and use sites, but it is just lacking.
There are better books on Amazon for doing legal research on theinternet.
