Understanding British Accounting.......2005-08-17

This book is on how to understand financial accounting sheets. It is British, so some of the terms being used are a bit unusual to Americans. As a for instance, all of the numbers are in pounds, not dollars. It is intended for the business manager without an accounting background. It could also be used as the basis for a business studies course.

This is the eighth edition of this book and the updated changes take into account changes in the (British) accounting rules.

If it is part of your job or interest to evaluate British companies for investment or other purposes, this book would be an ideal way to start learning the differrences in accounting practices.

I am using this book as reading material for an MBA. I felt it could explore the deaper meaning of ratio analysis and its relevance within more industries. The size looks unitidy in my bookcase. But the soft cover certainly brought the price down and it hs proved invaluable as I have very little in the way of accounting knowledge.

Viewpoint of a novice.......2007-01-10

I bought this book because I was to lead a group in developing an RFP but had no experience with RFP's. I don't know how this book will meet the needs of anyone with a lot of experience but I am extremely impressed by its readability, organization, and applicability. I'm still working on the project but have gotten good feedback on what I've developed, which I could not have done without the guidance and information in the book. It is logically sequenced and appears to cover all bases, though someone with a lot more experience would be better able to assess this. Impressed? Very.

The book is an easy read and provides me with the needed understanding of developing an RFP and template.

Resource and guidelines with a coherent approach.......2004-03-01

There are literally hundreds of good books on proposal writing, but only a tiny handful on writing RFPs. From among the handful this book stands out for a number of reasons:

(1) It clearly described the RFP process from start to finish - and RFP development is a process with a defined life cycle.

(2) The author goes well beyond the immediate objective of writing an RFP and managing the process by including thought-provoking material on post-award vendor management. This material sometimes escapes the RFP development team who is more focused on getting to the award milestone without thinking about the post-award ramifications.

(3) It's not boring - the writing is lively, and the material is presented at a fast pace. The pace, however, does not leave gaps. Every facet of the RFP process is covered in sufficient detail.

In addition to the above, the approach set forth in this book is consistent with best practices in RFP development. I especially like the copious checklists, the RFP roadmap, and the way illustrations are skillfully used to reinforce concepts and advice.

Note that the focus of this book is information technology and software acquisition. Some of the material is unique to those domains; however, the basic principles and RFP process can be used for virtually any type of RFP, from office services to purchasing furniture.

Overall, this is the one book I recommend for RFP development. If you are an IT professional, regardless of role, the chances are you will be involved in this process at some point in your career, making this book a valuable addition to your library. If you have recently been assigned to an RFP team you should get this book as soon as possible, and use it as your compass and blueprint if your organization does not already have a formal RFP process in place.

I was in charge to define the RFP for a big imaging system project and this book gave me the tools to plan, supervise and create the RFP that point out the requirements, so the providers can easily develop the correct solution in their proposal.

This book is ahead. Has very good explanation (easy to read and understand), well structured and the examples are good to have a clear idea of the content that should have all the topic of the RFP. It gave me the tools to map the plan, the definition of the requirements and the development of the RFP document.

Expensive book with limited value.......1999-02-25

The book is published in a binder form and costs $95,- For this money the readers would be entitled to a detailed and practical guide, usable in their work and a source to refer to. Unfortunately the book is quite superficial, too verbose and not even clearly presented. Its major defect is that in fact it says very little about contract administration itself, that is the work the contract administrator does after the contract is signed and until it is completed. There is very little on how to deal with the other contractual party, what problems occur and how to handle them. There are some parts which are clearly irritating, for instance : Part 10. Title: What is a claim? The author says : "Some think this, other think that. In fact there are many types of claims", and does not answer the question he himself asks in the title.

Hi! I am also one of Andrew Fraknoi's former students and we used this book in our class. It's awesome! It is very well written and he makes it very easy to understand everything about the planets and the Universe. He is also an awesome teacher so if you have the opportunity to take one of his ASTRO classes at Foothill College-you should take it!

Great Astronomy Introductory Book!.......2000-10-07

If you have any interest in Astronomy, this is a must have book for an introduction to the subject. It is a non-mathematical introduction to the subject and is extremely well written. The book was intended for a non-major science subject in college, but even if you are not attending a class on the subject, this is still a great book to learn from.

I personally don't have the hard cover edition but I have the paper back edition. I plan to purchase the hard cover edition when I have the money for it. I can expand a little on the subject matter of the paperback edition, which I'm sure is simply a stripped down version of the hard cover book. It covers the history of astronomy to the latest theories in the field. Such topics as gravity, planets, the Sun, stars, thermo-nuclear fusion, black holes and quasars are explained in a easy to digest manner. I found the topic of how thermo-nuclear fusion especially facinating as I always wondered how stars (like our sun) generated it's energy, I knew it was fusion but did not understand how it functioned, all was made clear to me.

There are also plenty of visual aides and pictures in book. A large majority of images are directly from Hubble Space Telescope that will leave you breathless at the beauty and vastness of space. The book also directs you to websites that will expand on the material covered in the book. Great stuff!

Fraknoi, Morrison and Wolff have done a tremendous job in writing this book. Kudos to the authors for taking to the time to do it right.

A very good non-mathematical introduction to Astronomy.......2000-03-14

This book is great if you want to get a feel for all the different astronomical objects, what they are and how it all fits together. I like the way the authors start with the Earth and then move on to the other planets, the stars, galaxies, clusters and eventually to Relativity and the Big Bang, without digging too much into the details. It's a thought-provoking book and I recommend it to anyone who is eager to get into the field.

I'm one of Andrew Fraknoi's student at Foothill and this book is as excellent as his lectures there. It's simply, however, in-depth written book with several new fantastic pictures. It should be a part of every home library

Simple, yet fairly in-depth, and has lots of good pictures to help illustrate the concepts. Easy enough reading for the budding astronomer to use, but also provides detailed information useful for more complicated research. Everthing from focal length to electron emission!

Finny's Voyage Through the Universe "the big bang" is an amazing book that captures the attention of children. This book draws children into an amazing educational journey in which they travel through the universe and learn the events surrounding the " big bang".
