Useless for all but beginners.......2004-07-06

Another mediocre, general-fare, trading 101 (in fact a chapter IS named Technical Analysis 101) book that is pretty much worthless drivel except for all but the most beginning traders. WHY OH WHY can't someone write a book that takes traders, step-by-step through actual, real time trades, comprehensively and methodically via a chrnological type format?? Not this one, for sure. The author is simply filling reams of paper with such general ideas as 'don't trade with your emotions,' 'you can't trade if you're upset,' 'psychology can't be underestimated' 'trade with the trend,' ad nauseum. It is clear, Mr. Borsellino is simply trying to improve HIS bottom line with this book. Don't waste your money. One of the more generous and concise books that has lots in it for all levels of traders is Marcel Linc's book. Also, steer clear of Toni Turner's pablum.

Introduction to trading.......2003-11-03

This is exactly as described a how-to book for daytraders. There is a perfunctory rehash of the basics of technical analysis and execution systems. The material here is helpful as a stepping stone if the reader has never been exposed to the material but there is nothing groundbreaking presented. That alone is of interest to me. Here is a trader that has been successful on the floor with little more that a few support and resistance numbers in his head. It is clear from his book that you will make bigger profits if you understand the market, even if you invest little time reading the latest book from newest technical analyst.

There are sections about how to prepare for the trading day, the dynamics during the trading day and how to use time effectively after trading is done. Again, the material presented is basic in nature. Perhaps when a book is written with such a large scope, it would be impossible to add much depth to the various topics. Borsellino is a legend of trading. But I would recommend Schwartz's Pit Bull over this effort.

Beginners Only.......2003-06-22

One of the trading legends of this generation , I'd imagine it might have been painful for Lewis to "talk down" and write the book in this total trading newbie tone. Experienced traders will find little information here of any use. Just very basic TA, bit of overworked trading principles and the customary psychology chapter. I did find one page discussing fair value and premiums to be interesting and there are a few pages going over the economic indicators at the end of the book that might be worth taking notes on. Overall, a decent pick up for a total beginner though useless for any seasoned trader.

Lewis Borsellino has earned a reputation as one of the greatest for his 20 years of pit trading at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. This book offers the essential ingredients that have given the author what it takes to become one of the best. Through Lewis' real-world experiences, the virtues of mental preparation, technical analysis, devising a trading plan, execution and discipline, should hit home with clarity.

The first chapter of the book is dedicated to mental preparation, and the importance of fully understanding the basic truths about trading. Lewis has seen people from all types of professions think they can take what they have learned in their fields and apply it to trading. This is not the case. When Lewis shares his experiences, it is clear that the market requires a certain "frame of mind" that is like nothing else.

At one point in Lewis' career, he had gained $4.5 million in profits, but saw it evaporate to only $100,000. From this loss, he learned that certain errors in his thinking were the culprits. For example, trading in big size may be good for the ego, but it can get you into situations that a poor market won't accommodate for. As Lewis said:

"I couldn't fling around hundreds of contracts to satisfy my ego or because people in the pit expected that of me. I had to trade what suited both my own plan and the market conditions. After that my trading was noticeably on track."

With a proper mindset in place, a good trader needs a good plan to execute. Essential to Lewis' plan is technical analysis. According to Mr. Borsellino, technical analysis, as far as drawing up the images, is the easy part; interpreting them is where the real expertise comes in. With this book as your guide, insight into what Lewis looks for in a chart will be made clear. The goal here is to identify the trend at an early stage and stay with the trend until it has ceased. Just learning the patterns will only get you so far, it takes the advice of a real pro to gain a superior edge in the markets.

The most important aspect of trading for Lewis is discipline. This means adhering to a plan, focusing on the trade, not the money, and goal setting. Without discipline, the best strategies in the world will fall apart. Knowing when, and when not to trade, as well as not letting matters outside of trading interfere with your decisions, are the results of practicing good discipline. This challenge is something even Lewis deals with now in his career. Through sharing personal experiences, the author gives tips and advice on how to incorporate good discipline, and to avoid common pitfalls that will wreak havoc on your account. Again, just being familiar with the importance of discipline is one thing, but having Lewis as your guide is a real treat.

I will admit that I am a trading book junky and find something to learn from just about everything I pick up. But this one comes from the perspective of one of the world's greatest, and with co-author Patricia Crisafulli, this well-written read will help solidify what's really important when it comes to obtaining success. Hey, if you are like me and have a full-time job while you trade, then I think that you will find this book valuable. This is real world stuff from a real trader. I mean, if failure is the best teacher then this guy can has learned alot. In the book, Borsellino talks about how he worked over $4 million down to $100K and what he learned from it. That's the best part about this book, lessons like that broken down into a simple set of rules to trade by. Another plus, Borsellino gives you his support and resistance levels every day on the S&Ps free on TradingMarkets.com!

Another book with old strategies, however...........2005-02-06

There are some good ideas that you can rescue from this book. Therefore I think you should buy it since you can make much more money and certainly recoup your small investment if you employ 2 o 3 good tips.

Any way, from my point of view a trader must always read as much as he can. There is simply no other way to prepare one self for this difficult yet incredibly rewarding activity, but to learn and put into practice as much ideas as you can, at least by paper trading first.

The are a lot of books on the subject, however many of them where written 2 o 4 years ago and that kind of makes them obsolete in this constantly changing field.

The internet offers great places where you can learn more specialized trading techniques. One of those places that I have found to be worthy is ProfitableStockmarket dotcom.

They focus mainly on momentum trading and employ a rather simple yet effective strategy. I think that for a trader to survive and be profitable, its neccessary to keep their trading as simple as possible. To much confussion and technical indicators will most of the time make you slow in your decisions and froze you up when a good opportunity is right in front of you.

In the end it's all about buying or selling with out hesitation, and doing it over an over again according to your set ups.

What became of Broadway Trading, LLC??.......2004-01-27

They went bankrupt, which is where you would be if you followed West and Friedfertig's methods. The book was a copy of Jack Schwager's Market Wizards series, due to the interviews conducted with "traders". You would be amazed if you saw some of these people and didnt read their words in print. Somehow they would not come off so sharp. Trust me!

Also do you think our authors would be able to spot "managerial talent" over a few aspiring proprietory traders? No they hire guys who have previously filed bankruptcy in their past and pipe up their accomplishments, which are a joke when you realized they bailed on creditors!!

Save yourself a dime and avoid it-if someone gives it to you, and you can't return it, use to start the BBQ grill. I could go on and on about SEC/NASD violation, getting short on a downtick, etc but I wont!

Obsolete.......2003-06-28

This book completely fails to realistically convey the relative risks and profit potential for the average wannabe day trader. Im talking about someone with less than a few thousand to play the market. Unless you have big bucks and Level II quotes forget day trading unless you are very lucky. In the trading parlance, I wish I had a short position on this book at its current price, and could cover my short at the current used price! Save your money.

This book is essentially obsolete just three years after its publication. Stocks are now traded in decimals, and the spreads on heavily traded stocks are now almost nonexistent, sometimes being less than one cent a share. Consequently, you can forget about any of the strategies or information regarding "pocketing the spread", "getting between the spread", etc. With the proliferation of ECN trading, the influence of the market makers in a stock has been markedly reduced. In a stock that trades 80 million shares per day, a market maker with a 100,000 share block is not going to be able to move the stock significantly, and ECN trading can overwhelm his influence. Likewise, information gleaned from the Level II screen, while still useful if one knows what to look for, is no longer the Holy Grail. Also, day trading firms, like the authors' "Broadway Trading" are on the way to extinction, now that some big online brokers offer direct-access trades for less than a quarter of what day trading firms charge, as well as offering free Level II quotes and other information not available to the day trading firms.

This is my first exposure to a Jake Bernstein book and I've read many mixed things about him. Well, after reading most of this book .. I'm glad i now have my own opinions.

This book appears to be written for a total beginner futures trader lemming, just waiting to blow out their account. There is absolutely no substance in this book, nothing to be learned and filled with verbose junk about indicators, patterns and psychology -- typical in most books. Jake provides numerous so called "backtests" of various indicator settings with variable moving averages. Every single system has different settings - which is such an obvious sign of curve fitting. The only thing I saw of some value was the 3 period high and low moving averages to serve as channels of support and resistance .. which a trader may be able to modify into something usable, since Jake's version is taught improperly.

I checked this book out from the library and I still feel I got ripped off .. and it was free.

Bernstein, I tell you, is a genius........2003-04-05

I refute any negative claims about the content of this book. The strategies outlined in the book are viable and very profitable approaches. I know, I have adapted a couple of them to my own use. I am in the minority as a profitable futures day trader because as every trader knows, most traders lose. I also lost money in my first year trading futures. There is a steep learning curve in trading. Here is my message to any newcomers to futures trading. NEVER GIVE UP! This book is a wonderful place to begin your own futures research. For day trading, I have found the very unique support and resistance methods found in the book effective in the S+P 500, Nasdaq 100, and Euro. Get some charts. Apply the methods, oscillators and indicators for yourself. You will see how effective they are. Then begin your own research using Jake's ideas as a springboard. Yes, you can make a living trading futures. There is a whole lot of very expensive bull out there about futures trading. If you do not want to take my word for it, consider this. Larry Williams recommends reading all of Jake Bernstein's work. So do I.

Pretty Vague - ONLY FOR BEGINNERS.......2001-10-22

The book is a VERY basic introduction to developing a trading system and is literally geared for the newbie who knows nothing. With that said, he introduces the fundamental aspects of developing a trading system (such as identifying specific levels of risk, stops, etc...). and the different types of systems (trend following, support resistance, breakout...). He even provides examples of back tested systems that work over the given time frame he has chosen. The problems with the book are that since it is for the beginner it should probably contain the code for easylanguage or metastock so one can become use to programming in an indicator, signal, then building a strategy. He does not even go over the math of most of the indicators. I guess he thinks if it works then the investor should not know anything else. So basically what you have is a book that describes indicators and systems that are already present on most testing software. For example, there is already a parabolic trading system on Tradestation. So why do you need the book? Because you are a beginner, and that is why I gave it 3 stars, for everyone else, I would give it one.

great for the beginner.......2001-01-26

I read this book before I started trading futures. I played around with a few of the concepts and since then (end 1999) have written my own trading system based on some of the theories. I have gone through a steep learning curve but have now started to make money consistently in the futures market.

I would totally recommend the book for down to earth explanations on how to develop a profitable strategy.

A Waste of Money - <1 Star.......2000-12-27

This book looks just like a compilation of the "author's" position trading books but with editing to put in the words "day trading" where "position trading" used to be. There's no other difference. The only potentially useful info to a newbie was about monitoring the first 30 minutes to try to determine the direction of the day. However, everyone has been doing that for years and most websites suggest it, without charging. Who doesn't know what an oscillator divergence is? That's not a system and while a valid indicator for some trading styles, is certainly not unique to day trading. Mr. Bernstein was reportedly run off tv with his infomercials that made claims the government stated he couldn't back up. Put his name in a search engine to see what others say about him. If you want to get your money's worth, read whatever Larry Williams' latest book is. He'll show you his brokerage records, Mr. Bernstein won't. 'Nuff said.
