    Book Description

    Auditing counts!

With recent incidents at WorldCom, Enron, Xerox, Tyco, and other companies, auditing has never been so important. Auditing is perhaps our single best defense in ensuring the integrity of our financial reporting system.

That's why this new Eighth Edition of Boynton and Johnson's Modern Auditing focuses on decision making and the critical role auditors play in providing assurance about the integrity of the financial reporting system. Known for its clear writing and accessibility, this text provides comprehensive and integrated coverage of current developments in the environment, standards, and methodology of auditing.

    Features
    * Real-world examples relate issues discussed in the chapter to ethics, audit decision making, and the integrity of the financial reporting system.
    * Focus on Audit Decisions sections highlight key factors that influence an auditor's decisions.
    * Includes discussion of the role of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Auditing Standards, and a chapter feature highlights PCAOB standards that differ from Generally Accepted Auditing Standards for private companies.
    * Expanded case material related to the integrated audit case (Mt. Hood Furniture) provides a variety of databases that allow students to utilize generalized audit software (IDEA) to accomplish various audit tasks. Multiple databases allow the case to be reused with different data from term to term.
    * A flowchart style chapter preview begins each chapter.
    * Chapter summaries reinforce important audit decisions included in the chapter.
    * End-of-chapter material organized by audit decisions provides a clear link between audit decisions discussed in each chapter and the problem material.

    3 out of 5 stars Extensive .......2006-05-07

This book is extensive but confusing. I had to flip back to different chapters to make sure I didn't miss anything.

1 out of 5 stars Vague, wordy, confusing, and in need of examples.......2005-11-10

I found that if you want to learn the language of auditing, have another reference handy. Often, the discourse goes on and on and on and could really be distilled down into a sentence or two that had a firm and grounded presentation. There were very few examples so it was difficult at best to try to understand the often high-level conceptual frameworks that were constantly being presented. I also noted quite a few editing errors that probably arose from cut-and-pastes that were not carefully reviewed. Also, figures and diagrams were reused and were not carefully reviewed either as information was present that didn't apply to the new scenario.

    1 out of 5 stars Very Confusing.......2005-07-13

I believe you can find a better auditing textbook in the market. I took an auditing class with one of the authur in Portland and, as a result, was required to buy the textbook. But, I ended up using another auditing textbook in order to get an "A" from this class. The format and writing style are very difficult to follow and understand.

    4 out of 5 stars It's OK........1999-05-13

I'm a college student. I am studying auditing to take an AICPA exam. well, auditing is hard for me to study. I think, in order to understand a structure of auditing, reading a book is important. 'Modern Auditing' is helpful to me. A consistent arrangement of context, detailed indexes, lots of figures.... I'd like to recommend 'Modern Auditing'.

    5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2006-05-12

This is a fantastic resource for accountants entering into not-for-profit organizations for the first time or to review further for accountants wanting more clarity in their current management positions. This book covers everything and has excellent sections on accounting and reporting guidelines for the many entity types of not-for-profit organizations. Also has a chapter covering entities on public not-for-profit (GASB). This book truly is worth keeping in the office as a valuable resource.

4 out of 5 stars midnight accounting help.......1999-12-07

Sometimes you may be serving on the board of a nonprofit group and discover that your funder requires GAAP. Well what is that. This book will help you understand the nonprofit world of accounting. This work has been a resource that I have turned to at midnight myself aand have recommended many times. At times it is a little technical. But it helps to use some "accounting" language in the next board or committee meeting that you will be discussing budgets or finalcial presentatons.

Also, I have used this as a guideline when I consulted a small group that needed help with internal controls.

4 out of 5 stars This book is very valuable for Not-For-Profit Organizations.......1999-10-18

I felt this book was basically well written. It at times is a little too technical, but basically is easy to follow. I do find it an invaluable tool for reference information in the not-for-profit industry.

4 out of 5 stars It is helpful to me........1999-05-25

It was lucky to find this book. I'm a college student. I am preparing to take a AICPA exam. The library of my college doesn't have enough books about Not-for-Profit Organization accounting. This book gives me friendly and detailed explanations. well, a shortness of this book is a tedious text, such as one color text, no graphic figures. I just worried about objective judgements, because I didn't study other Not-fot-Profit books. Anyway, this book makes me come to Not-for-Profit accounting more closely. I'd like to recommend this book.

Business writer and former accountant Michael C. Thomsett offers individual investors step-by-step advice on how to read each of the indicators found in the financial press, and how to use those indicators decisively. He says that by establishing goals tied to specific indicators, investors can better determine when to buy, sell, hold, or stay away from the market.

Just the Financial Facts features a series of proven visual tools (worksheets and forms, graphs and charts, checklists, examples, key points and sidebars) to make the material easy to understand and - just as importantly - easy to apply, even for those without formal financial training.

This book wasn't what I expected... It was great if you're new to the stock market and you'd like to learn what kinds of financial information are available and what it all means. However, it didn't talk enough about which information was useful and why. If you're familiar with financial information and you know how to read it...I'll save you the cost of this book: 'Ignore the general market information (DJIA, S&P Index, etc.) and pay attention only to information that is specific to the stocks that are of interest to you.'

I used this collection for two sections of courses in composition and it was the most popular text of the quarter in both classes. The articles Koopmans has collected are engaging and interesting, as well as being entertaining.

I would highly recommend this book for teachers of high school and college.

                        Book Description

Every day we watch, read, and hear stories about crime and justice. This path-breaking book reveals how policymakers, criminal justice professionals, pressure groups, and the police in the United Kingdom compete in self-promoting struggles to shape their own images and policy agenda. The first
new study in almost two decades of how specialist crime journalists work, this book brings to a wider public an influential new approach to the sociological study of journalism. Series of case studies, the authors pose a number of important questions. Does coverage of crime statistics promote fear
of crime, or is the debate about the figures really about something else? By focusing on fear of crime have we therefore underplayed public fear of authority? Does the coverage of sexual crime encourage voyeurism? And finally, is television's growing obsession with showing us stories of real crime
more about entertaining the audience than about helping the police with their enquiries?

5 out of 5 stars Mass Media bias exposed!.......1999-09-19

In "Representing O.J.; editor Gregg Barak makes use of meta-analysis to present a broad spectrum of views and commentary pertaining to the controversial "not guilty" verdict in the O.J. Simpson trial. Supported by contributed accounts, the editor paints a very disturbing picture of the African-American people's plight under the country's justice system. Also of particular interest is the role that the mass communications media is described as playing in the orchestration of periodic themes of violence that tend to depict members of racial minorities as having a monopoly on crime. Frenzied coverage of O.J. Simpson himself, Mike Tyson, Clarence Thomas and the dismissed Afro-American male juror whose crime was to look at a non-black female juror is presented as indicative of suck bias, and that's not all.

According to Barak and Co; themes such as the foregoing also have the effect of perpetuating the hegemonic order. As one contributor puts it, it is by means of legal fictions that the ruling class often criminalizes, manipulates, and otherwise controls political opponents and "uppity niggers" sic. He adds that occasional disorder actually serves to provide the ruling class with an excuse to tighten its grip on society by enacting harsher penal laws for society's so-called protection.

With regard to the "not guilty" verdict, the prevailing view seems to be that, that was a mere fluke since the factors that combined to influence it are non-existent in the majority of cases where Blacks fall foul of the law. Not everybody can afford the high legal fees that went into the Simpson defence and therefore they end up having to plea-bargain. The system was never meat to work for the African-American and therefore it would be naïve for anyone of them to believe that now it does. The book is surely an eye opener to anyone interested in the legal system and its impact on certain sectors of American society.

5 out of 5 stars An important and timely book........2001-03-17

Like most Americans, you and I have already devoted countless hours absorbing the latest reports about high-profile legal cases. A short list reminds us of the time we have spent: O. J., JonBenet, Rodney King, Lorena Bobitt, Monica Lewinsky, and the British nanny Louise Woodward. In the 1990s, these and other judicial soap operas have become a mainstay of mainstream television, newspapers, and magazines. These "dramas" are the lifeblood of the newer cable and Internet "news" media. These cases have so worked their way into our collective consciousness that the mere mention of one can easily evoke (and provoke!) a long and far-ranging discussion.

In their new book TABLOID JUSTICE: CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AN AGE OF MEDIA FRENZY, Richard Fox and Robert Van Sickel have dissected how the increasingly entertainment-oriented news media have covered such high-profile legal cases. The authors show how growing familiarity with celebrity criminal cases has distorted our understanding of the U. S. legal system and undercut our confidence in law enforcement, attorneys, judges, and the jury system.

TABLOID JUSTICE offers a concise introduction to this important subject. It is richly documented without being pedantic. It is a wonderful text for college-level courses in Law and Society or Mass Communications. Students will find its argument compelling. Faculty will appreciate its value as a catalyst for class discussions about the impact of the media on our legal system.

Soon a new "trial of the century" will come our way. Fox and Van Sickel want all of us to be better prepared when it does.

                          Book Description

In this wide-ranging study, Sucheta Mazumdar offers a new answer to the fundamental question of why China, universally acknowledged as one of the most developed economies in the world through the mid-eighteenth century, paused in this development process in the nineteenth. Focusing on cane-sugar production, domestic and international trade, technology, and the history of consumption for over a thousand years as a means of framing the larger questions, the author shows that the economy of late imperial China was not stagnant, nor was the state suppressing trade; indeed, China was integrated into the world market well before the Opium War. But clearly the trajectory of development did not transform the social organization of production or set in motion sustained economic growth.
