    Book Description

Ideal for a survey course, this text is written to meet the needs of non-accountants who need to gain a basic understanding of how to use accounting information and make financial decisions. The reader is introduced to basic concepts such as: what accounting information is, what it means, and how it is used. Students are exposed to financial statements and learn what they do and do not communicate. This text covers financial and managerial accounting concepts. A complete annual report is included in an appendix.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Seems intentionally confusing.......2007-03-25

I'm just starting a class that requires this book. I don't have a financial background. The book is confusing. It seems like the chapters outline basic principles. However, when it comes to doing the homework problems, the text asks things that were poorly covered and/or obscure.

I wish I didn't have to take this class and could get my money back.

    1 out of 5 stars Trish.......2006-02-27

I gave this book one star because there are no negative numbers available. The other reviews here are all true! This is a horrible textbook that jumps from subject to subject quickly, gives simplistic examples in the chapter and then throws complex homework problems with new components not explained in the chapter--oh and don't let me forget to mention that the terminology changes from chapter to homework as well! A friend with two masters (business and engineering) became so frustrated trying to help with a problem that he threw his hands up. The terminology kept throwing him off.

If you are supposed to buy this text I suggest you either show these to college administration ahead of time, or take another class. This is so bad I won't even sell mine back. I'm throwing it in my grill to burn.

1 out of 5 stars This text is terrible.......2005-11-16

This book lacks effective structure, or comprehensible structure at least, and the writing is both tedious and meandering. Many of the examples are minimally useful and some are only vaguely associated to the concepts they are meant to support. Useless! This book wasted the time I had taken from my family to study accounting. Why would anyone select this text for a graduate level class???

1 out of 5 stars What a waste of money.......2005-10-17

This textbook is fullllllll of inaccuracies. Additionally, the author gets some sort of sick thrill from giving really simple, insufficient examples in the chapters, and then giving over-the-top difficult questions in the homework. This author also loves to ramble and make this already tedious subject just as incomprehensible as he can possibly make it. My husband is a CFO and could NOT believe how horrible this book is. It's that bad. Students should demand that a different textbook be required.

1 out of 5 stars Very confusing text.......2005-02-09

I found this textbook to be very confusing. It doesn't spend enough time elaborating on each topic before it moves on to the next.

            Book Description

Are you about to invest $20,000+ on a franchise? Which business has the best prospects and which are "dogs"? This report ranks some of the most popular ones and tells you. Franchising is fraught with danger--the escalating number of lawsuits/disputes over earnings claims, contracts, inadequate support and disclosure, and territory encroachment. This timely report examines these and other complex issues that characterize franchising, offering market data and statistical information about franchise buyers, failure rates, and marketplace trends. Industry-by-industry analyses detail market size, growth rates, demand/outlook to the year 2000, number of outlets, royalties, fees--covering 12 sectors: child day care centers, travel agencies, residential realtors, temp help agencies, child learning centers, postal/packaging business services, commercial cleaning, tax preparation, auto repair/service centers, and weight loss programs.

                Description:
Findings from an empirical study suggest that the administrative productivity of U.S. franchisors is determined by the provision of support activities to franchisees, the need to monitor franchisees, the use of sub-franchising agreements and the size of the network.

1 out of 5 stars The Constitution in Exile.......2007-10-05

Could not finish the book. I think it was not only biased with too much of his personal feelings, but written in a way that was very uninteresting for the reader. Got the book based on his appearances on the Oreilly Factor but was very disappointed. If you are a moderate conservative like most Americans you probably will not like this nor his interpretation of the constitution.

5 out of 5 stars Great for everyone who cares.......2007-08-27

If you do care about the constitution then read this book. People on the left and right are always accusing each other of manipulating it, well that just goes to show that perhaps both are a little guilty, and this book finally drives home some serious things. The best part is that it is factual and therefore informative and edcuations to all the emo-cons who are running around repeating the same dogma to everyone about what they think is the truth, which of course they get from CNN headlines and the NY Times not that I am naming names of news sources that suffer from extreme manipulation or anything.

                          5 out of 5 stars Important Book.......2007-06-22

A great read explaining how the government has repeatedly gone beyond the law. The last section on the "Patriot" Act should be required reading for all Americans. Wake up before it is too late.

5 out of 5 stars Grim reading ...........2007-05-07

The writing stays well inside the boundaries of "well-read layman's vocabaulary" and rarely descends into cant. I could wish for a more scholarly presentation, but the book does a good job with its intended purpose and for its intended audience. If you've ever said,"There ought to be a law ..." this book will give you a lot to think about.

5 out of 5 stars A Well Done Nonfiction Thriller.......2007-03-07

Judge Napolitano has done a great job of researching, and clearly explaining, the major provisions of our Constitution that have been twisted or simply disregarded, and the specific actions by the Supreme Court, Congress, and past presidents that have brought this about. After devoting most of the book to this analysis, he suggests several relatively simple "fixes" to the language of the Constitution that would close the loopholes that initially enabled our great departure from the intent of the Founding Fathers, and boldly advocates a Constitutional Convention to bring these changes about.

All this is great in itself, but the icing on the cake (and what makes this a true scary thriller) is his incisive explanation of the Patriot Act and its true implications. This required considerable legal scholarship: many of the Act's provisions are effected through references and editorial changes to other laws. The only drawback is that this analysis is valid as of the publication date, and the Patriot Act has since been amended-- I'd like to see an updated analysis by the Judge!

All in all, considering the complexity and subtlety of the legal issues involved, this book is straightforward and easy to read. I strongly recommend it to anyone who sees, or would like to see, the US as the world's bastion of freedom.

I am a high school debater assigned with the task of explaining the complexities of federalism in the United States. I found this book offered unique insite to reafirm the place of state actions instead of Federal actions. Greve does a wonderful job of both explaining his thesis and making it interesting and relevant. To any debater, I would tell you that this book is key to any Federalism or States CP arguement. Enjoy the book.
