Customer Reviews:
Effective refresher ... Efficient reference.......2007-01-07
I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!
Great for more advanced courses...........2006-12-12
I bought this book as a study aid for my Elementary Statistics class. Although the book does give you many examples to help solve, it gets a little too complicated for a beginning statistics class. It became hard to sort through the things I needed to gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of statistics. If you are needing this book for your job or a more advanced statistics course, I would recommend it, but it's one for the beginner to leave alone.
Comprehensive Guide to Statistics.......2006-06-13
This excellent book provides a comprehensive look at statistical methods. It's a great reference guide with 19 chapters, each of which build nicely on one another.
Chapters 1 through 11 lay the foundation of statistical study and the reader should benefit greatly from this framework.
Specifically, Chapters 1 through 3 cover Variables and Graphs, Frequency Distributions and Mean-Median-Mode concepts. Chapters 4 through 6 move on to cover Standard Deviation, Skewness and Elementary Probability Theory. Chapter 7 then discusses Binomial, Normal and Poisson Distributions.
Chapters 8, 9, 10 and 11 delve into Sampling, Statistical Estimation, Statistical Decision and Small Sampling Theory.
The remaining chapters offer practical insights into such topics as Chi-Square test, Correlation Theory, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Time Series Analysis and Statistical Process Control. Much of this appears in the CFA curriculum and therefore is a worthy supplemental study.
True to its format, this Schaum's book helps readers via its question and answer format in each of its chapters. Going through these problems teaches and reinforces concepts taught in the first pages of each chapter in the book.
Great job authors! I'm hoping others will benefit from this book too.
Schaum's Outline of Statistics.......2006-03-03
This is a handy desk guide to statistics for someone who needs a statistical referemce as part of their job but is not a statistician, ie, performance management, data preparation or other information analysis. I compared this book to many others and found it the most comprehensive.
A Failed Attempt .......2005-01-12
This book is sloppily edited, with numerous typos in the equations. Page 91 has two symbolic errors plus a text error.
Overbar omitted twice on page 19 giving a nonsensical formula Z = (X - X)/s
Average customer rating:
- Excellent book
- Not as sleepy as the average Statistics Book...
- Easy to understand. Lots of exercises.
- Great book to understand Statistics!
- "Very poor in language."

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-09-23
very good book----I never read statistics before. Now I am securing A grade in weekly assignment refering this book
Not as sleepy as the average Statistics Book..........2007-05-14
But still as boring as watching grass grow! Honestly, the methodology of statistics/economics/finance/accounting, etc: is a major "yawn" for many. I personally excel at "applied economics", in other words, "How does this affect me/you/us?"
My professor used this book as a supplement to his "Statistics II" class, and it was "above average" in that regard, as was he.
Just remember, if you need this type of book to understand the methodology of "bean-counting", then this is better than any other I've seen in it's type. IT IS A VERY HARD SUBJECT, SO YOU MUST BREAK YOUR BACK AND CONCENTRATE- THIS BOOK WILL HELP YOU TO DO THAT. THERE IS NO MAGIC-BULLET BOOK, that I know of, FOR STATISTICS II!!! STUDY HARD!!!
Easy to understand. Lots of exercises. .......2006-07-13
As a teacher I have found this book very practical for my students. It has plenty of resolved exercises, 100% of them focused on Business and Economics. Also this book introduces Statistics in a more "informal" way that makes it easier for a non-mathematician student to understand. It lacks strong statistic theory so if you are looking for a more profound book this is not what you would like to choose. But in terms of exercises is the best.
Great book to understand Statistics!.......2004-07-26
Another fine book by Schaum's outline. For anyone who has lost touch with the world of statistics, this book is a must read. It has clear definitions, examples and complicated explanations if you wish to dig deeper. I recommend this book to all college students, undergraduate and even MBA students. For financial analysis, marketing, and social research, this book is wonderful.
"Very poor in language.".......2004-07-12
"This is a poorly presented text in terms of language."

Introduction to Modern Astrophysics, An (2nd Edition).......2007-06-03
Best Astrophysics for Undergraduate Course ! All Chapters fully explained with a lot of drills and updated with latest development on the field. Jose Quintero
The long awaited new edition of BOB (Big Orange Book).......2006-12-09
The number of books suitable for undergraduate courses in Astrophysics is not great. But of them all, this, called BOB (Big Orange Book) is the best.
This new second edition, badly needed since the first edition is now ten years old. In these ten years, there seems to have been just about as much discovered as in the centuries before. To list just a few: extrasolar planets, objects bigger than Pluto but further out (but the book was finished before the IAU decided to downgrade Pluto from being a planet), Spirit and Opportunity have been roving on Mars, discoveries like the universe is not slowing down but, rather, is actually accelerating, Dark energy wasn't even imagined at that time (and isn't easy to imagine now).
The book is aimed at the advanced undergraduate level after the student has had several previous physics classes and mathematics through differential equasions.
The one problem most often reported about BOB is its size, 1400 pages. This allows for a series of different courses to be taught using the same book by selecting appropriate chapters. Alternatively a full year course can be taught to cover most of the book.

Highly recommended.......2007-05-02
I wanted this book for a long time and got it only when the price was reduced when they released the new version.
I highly recommend it for any serious astronomer either as a reference or for an advanced undergraduate student.
Too difficult for the average reader.......2005-08-28
This book is a bit too professional for anyone who is just starting an astrophysics course.......the provided questions really screw up ur brain.....but if ur sure u have a good solid pure math and advanced physics background then go ahead and buy it otherwise check out other books.....
An introduction to modern astrophysics.......2004-10-25
The problems are very challanging, with out an instructor and a good foundation in pure math its nearly impossible for a self learner to solve the end-chapter questions from this book. Im currenlty stuck in many of these problems. If any one happens to have a complete solutions manual, I would give $250.00 for it.
atoms_101@msn.com
Very difficult to teach from.......2003-03-03
After surveying available undergraduate texts in astrophysics and consulting colleagues, I settled on this as the best available despite qualms about its size and cost. My students are finding its size and sheer length overwhelming; we are forced to leave out so much material that they are questioning whether it's worth it. The system of units used (cgs) is becoming (if it is not already) obsolete in most areas of astrophysics. In every chapter there are references to material yet to be covered, requiring one to flip back and forth, often over hundreds of pages. Finally, with a 1996 publication date, much of the material is becoming dated (I know, a new edition will be even more expensive).
All that said, there are remarkably few errors in the text, figures, and problems for a work of this size. The instructor's solution manual is clear, comprehensive, and generally correct.
Excellent and encyclopedic.......2000-01-26
There are very few comprehensive astrophysics text books at the junior/senior level. In trying to find a book which surveys most of the field I found only three possibilities. Two were good (Astrophysical Concepts by Harwitt and Astrophysics by Bowers and Deeming) but this one is EXCELLENT. The level of presentation is mathematically accessible to advanced undergrads in physics, math, comp sci, and engineering while the underlying physics is reviewed before it is applied. The exercises are interesting and complete and include several nice computer based problems in each chapter.
For a one semester survey class the size and scope of this book will induce heart attacks in your students but the organization and clear layout of the text allows the instructor to select a set of topics which (a) cover a wide range of astrophysical ideas and (b) don't depend strongly on the omitted material.
Highly recommended.

A Subset of Introduction to Modern Astrophysics.......2006-12-15
Aimed at the advanced physics or astronomy undergraduate student, this is an offspring of Introduction to Modern Astrophysics, often called BOB (Big Orange Book).
The one problem most often reported about BOB is its size, 1400 pages. Consequently this new, less expensive, smaller book has been produced that is smaller, more compact, and aimed at specific subject areas. In this book numerous subjects have been simply left out. These include: optics, the Solar System, and pulsars. Other areas have been greatly reduced in size: stellar evolution and radiative transfer. What's left is the core material needed for a course in Galactic Astrophysics and Cosmology.
This new second edition, badly needed since the first edition is now ten years old. In these ten years, there seems to have been just about as much discovered as in the centuries before. Discoveries like the universe is not slowing down but, rather, is actually accelerating, Dark energy wasn't even imagined at that time (and isn't easy to imagine now).

Customer Reviews:
Nice Text.......2001-07-02
Modern Stellar Astrophysics was a nice book. It was organized very well and presented the material in an orderly fashion. I thought that it lacked depth though. It gave many concepts, but they lacked mathematical examples to go with those concepts. A good book for people who already understand modern physics, but for those without a deep understanding of modern physics it will leave many open questions. Lastly, the homework questions at the end of the chapters resembled those examples throughtout the chapters themselves very closely and even identically, thus answering them takes absolutely no analytical skills just mere copying.
An Excellent Comprehensive Introduction to the subject.........2000-10-09
This is an excellent introduction to Stellar Astrophysics, covering from the very start the essential concepts needed to undertake the subject, and gradually building up untill a nice introductory level is achieved. The book is well organized: divided into two blocks, starts by setting a solid basis upon which later presents the subject. In the first and introductory part, the essential astronomical concepts are explained, and in the second part the author gets into the actual Astrophysics of Stars. The book is pleasant on several levels; conceptually, coherently and aesthetically, all this while making use of a clear, straightforward matheticall formalism which is simple enough to follow. It is well suited for an introductory course at the undergraduate level, and one of the few books which actually bridges the gap between the high-level available pieces and the general public oriented literature on the subject.

Book Description
These notes are designed as a text book for a course on the Modern Physics Theory for undergraduate students. The purpose is providing a rigorous and self-contained presentation of the simplest theoretical framework using elementary mathematical tools. A number of examples of relevant applications and an appropriate list of exercises and answered questions are also given.
The first part is devoted to Special Relativity concerning in particular space-time relativity and relativistic kinematics.
The second part deals with Schroedinger's formulation of quantum mechanics. The presentation concerns mainly one dimensional problems, in particular tunnel effect, discrete energy levels and band spectra.
The third part concerns the application of Gibbs statistical methods to quantum systems and in particular to Bose and Fermi gasses.
